It aims to address the high rate of school absenteeism due to the lack of adequate sanitary protection. Statistics show that poor girls can miss up to 50 days of school per year due to menstrual challenges.

CARING4GIRLS PROGRAMME

ACHIEVEMENTS 2020

The Programme supported more than 400,000 indigent girls overall in 2020, and reached an additional 27,000 new girls.

The programme was selected and presented at international board level, as a case study of one of the corporate’s most impactful and successful CSI community outreach interventions worldwide, by the SOUTH 32 International Corporate Affairs Community Division.

The annual Dis-Chem Million Comforts Campaign donated more than 10-million sanitary pads in support of the Programme. This was made possible through generous donations from customers, corporate bulk purchase and brand- matched by the various participating sanitary pad brand partners. On the 8th of December 2020, we have launched our own brand of sanitary pads which is locally manufactured. The initiative will contribute to job creation, provide an affordable option for low income girls and increase our number of beneficiaries through corporate partner distributions.

This is an annual expedition to summit Africa’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro, on Nelson Mandela International Day, 18 July, in support of the Caring4Girls sanitary pad programme. The expedition was established by innovative social entrepreneur and humanitarian, Richard Mabaso, and is led by renowned South African adventurer and motivational speaker, Sibusiso Vilane – the first black African to conquer the three Poles challenge: South Pole, North Pole and Mount Everest.

The 2020 Expedition was postponed due to COVID-19. We plan to go ahead with the 2021 Expedition as scheduled, subject to the relaxation of lockdown restrictions.

On the 18th of July 2020, we hosted an inspirational walk at the Cradle of Humankind to celebrate Nelson Mandela International Day. The walk supported employees in the tourism-sector who had experienced loss of income due to the pandemic, with food and sanitation hampers.

One of our international partners, Sarah Güsten-Marr (UK), has recorded a song in commemoration of Madiba, which will be launched on Mandela Day 2021. The song will resonate Mandela’s vision of hope and unity for our world. Proceeds will go towards the Caring4Girls cause.

CEO’s Challenge: Richard Mabaso and Sibusiso Vilane will attempt a new Trek4Mandela record in 2021, by attempting to summit Kilimanjaro in less than 36.5 hours.
