Thank you to Mr John Swindells, Assistant Deputy Principal Campus Ministry, who put together the ceremony and to Mr Neil Bright, Head of Physical Education & Health, for further developing the program which has been running for the past few years, and our Year 9 Care Group Teachers who arrived bright and early to cook the sausage sizzle for breakfast. The atmosphere was fantastic, and we were blessed with beautiful weather, clear blue skies and only a very light breeze. We look forward to continuing the journey through out 2018 with our Camino Camp in November. Mrs Michelle Smith Assistant Deputy Principal Year 9

Year 12 Ball

On Friday, 23rd February, our Graduating Class of 2018 celebrated their College Ball at Joondalup Resort with a “rustic” theme. The students looked amazing in their finery and began the evening in the resort gardens sipping on mocktails by the lake while the sun set.

The festivities moved inside to the superbly decorated Lakeview Ballroom where students shared a 3-course meal. The tone was set early for an amazing evening with the dance floor being occupied between entrée and mains, and then barely vacated throughout the night after dessert. Special thanks to the Ball Committee for their hard work in arranging the event and their artistic flair in bringing the theme together.

Ella Muscat and Jamie Archer were recognised as the Belle and Beau of the Ball, for the spirit in which they embraced the evening. The students looked amazing in their formal attire and I am sure it will be an evening they will remember for a long time. Mr Peter Boylen Assistant Deputy Principal, Year 12

Year 7 Between Tuesday 20th February to Thursday, 22nd February, all Year 7 students attended the Mary MacKillop Centre at the South Perth Convent, to learn about the story of Mary MacKillop, the Sisters of St Joseph and of course, our College Patron, Sister Irene McCormack.

Students met Sister Maree who took them on a tour of the convent and introduced them to many artworks, photographs and artefacts that helped to detail the story of Australia’s first and only Saint, Mary MacKillop. Students learned about Mary MacKillop’s efforts to establish the Josephite Sisters in 1866 and the devotion of Irene McCormack to this order some 91 years later in 1957. They also spent time reflecting on the life and lessons of Irene McCormack, and her devotion to Prayer, Service and Justice. We sincerely thank Sister Maree for her time, energy and infectious enthusiasm, as well as the Year 7 Care Group Teachers who accompanied our students each day. Mr Matthew Byrne Mr John Swindells Assistant Deputy Principal, Year 7 Assistant Deputy Principal, Campus Ministry

Family Portrait to the Leslie Family On Tuesday, 27th February, at a Year 12 assembly this week, an emotional event was celebrated by students and staff with Troy Leslie and his family. Fremantle artist, Mr Jacob Butler (nickname Shakeyjakey, www.shakey.com.au) was commissioned by Year 12 students to paint a beautiful family portrait of Troy Leslie’s family. This creation was to be a gift from Troy, and Year 12 students and staff.

This gift was initiated by Mr Rob Blair in 2017, who contacted Mr Butler after seeing his work in a documentary on televison. Troy sent photos to Jacob, who then visited the College at the end of last year to paint the family portrait with Troy. The funds for the gift were raised by the Year 12 students, with everyone involved in keeping the gift a secret from Troy’s family, including his siblings at the College. The Leslie family were brought to the assembly, with the impression that Troy was receiving an award. Their emotional surprise

and joy when the portrait was unveiled and given to the Leslie family, was itself a gift, and one the College will treasure.

Adventure World The Year 11 ATAR Physics students spent Friday, 23rd February at Adventure World investigating the huge range of Physics applications on show at Western Australia’s premium theme park - possibly the best place in the State to study the range of forces and motion in everyday situations.

Students tackled questions such as ‘do heavier people come down the water slide faster than lighter people’, ‘did the Freefall ride change its name to Inferno because it did not actually achieve freefall status’ and ‘what is the average frictional force required to stop the sky rail carriages and their occupants moving’. The students conducted a number of experiments in order to answer the five questions posed, as part of their first major assignment for the year, proving that learning can be fun. Care for Students at Reception To help care for students and assist our office staff look after student needs efficiently, we ask parents and students to be aware of the following arrangements:

• There are many times during the day when our office staff receive items such as lunches, laptops, Physical Education and sport uniforms. As you would appreciate to deliver the items to students takes time and takes our office staff away from other duties. This is a reminder that, as with last year, when items are dropped off at the College Reception, students will be notified by email to collect the item. Students have the opportunity to check emails during the day.

• When a student has reason to leave school during the day for a medical appointment or like, parents are asked to write a note in the student planner which is to be presented at the College Office when students are signing out. If a phone call is made from parents during the day to advise that a student has an appointment, we cannot guarantee that a student will receive the message.

• A few students are having lock problems because they do not have the school issued lock. Hence, if a lock malfunctions, Assistant Deputy Principals are not able to assist with opening the locker. Replacement locks are available from the College Office at a cost of $18.
