IMHOispleasedtoannouncethatitiscoordinatingitsfirstmedicalvolunteertriptoEthiopiathisOctober2010andisseeking

energeticvolunteerswhowishtoservethehealth&medicalneedsofpoorpatientsinBahirDar,Ethiopia.Thistripisbeing

plannedwiththefullsupportoftheEthiopianConsulateofLosAngelesandtheAmharaDevelopmentAssociationin

Amhara,Ethiopia.IMHOseeks12‐15volunteers,particularlythosewhowithabackgroundorexperienceindiabetesmedicine,

cardiology,eyecare/cataractssurgery,andprimarycare,aswellasthosewithaninterestorexpertiseinhealtheducation(ie:

lecturinginlocalmedicalcolleges&hospitals)and/ortelemedicine.Allvolunteerswillbeexpectedtocontributeaprogramfee

IMHOMEDICALMISSIONSOVERVIEW IMHOisproudtoannouncethelaunchofanewinitiative,theMedicalMissionsprogram,whichwilltakeinternationalvolunteerstounder‐servedcommunitiesinthedevelopingworldtoprovidemuchneededmedicalcare!InspiredbytheactionsofsomanyfollowingthetsunamidisasterofDecember26,2004inwhichover400IMHOvolunteerswenttoserveinSriLanka,theIMHOteamhasdecidedtosendsimilarteamsofmedicalvolunteersabroad,startinginEthiopiain2010!

VOLUNTEERREQUIREMENTS&PROGRAMFEE Allprospectivevolunteersmustfilloutavolunteerapplicationandreleasewaiver,whichmustbefullycompletedandsentbackalongwithanon‐refundableapplicationfeeof$20.Volunteerswillbeconsideredbasedofftheirbackground,skills,interests,experiences,andothercriteriathatmaybeappropriateforeachparticulartrip.SelectedvolunteerswillbeaskedtopayaprogramfeetoIMHOininstallments,whichwillcoveralloftheirexpensesfromarrivaluntildeparture(withtheexceptionofanypersonalincidentals)andacontributiontowardsallneededsupplies,medicines,equipment,andTeamLead’stravelexpenses.VolunteerswillalsobeexpectedtocoverthecostoftheirairfareandtocoordinatewiththeTeamLeadinbookingtheirflightssothatairportpick‐upanddrop‐offcanbearrangedspecificallyforeachvolunteerdependingonarrival&departuredateandtime.Thisprogramemploysaself‐financingmodel,meaningIMHOdoesNOTprofitfromanyoftheseactivities.TheprogramfeefortheEthiopiavolunteertripinOctober2010issetat$995/person.

SERVICEWORK Uponarrivalinthetargetcommunity,volunteerswillworkalongsidethelocalpartnerorganizationandundertheleadershipoftheIMHOTeamLead,inservingtheneedsofthecommunity.Volunteerswillserveinlocalhospitalsandclinics,theexactscheduleforwhichwillbeorganizedbythelocalpartnerorganization.Anyvolunteerswhowishtoteach(inanysubject)atthelocalmedicalcollegesandhospitalsareencouragedtodoso.TheexacttopicofyourpresentationandoverallplanshouldbediscussedinadvancewiththeIMHOTeamLeadandcommunicateddirectlytothelocalpartnerorganization.Volunteersarealsoencouragedtocollectsuppliesinadvance,includinganymedicines,equipment,orotherresourcesthatmightbehelpfultothebenefittingcommunities.Wewillalsobescopingoutpotentialfutureprojectsandcollaborationswithourpartnerorganizations.Volunteeraccommodationswillvaryfromsitetosite,butvolunteersshouldexpectsimplebutsatisfactoryconditions.TheTeamLeadwillworktoensurethatallvolunteershavetheirneedsmetandarecaredforproperlythroughouttheirstay,helpingtoaddressanylogisticalissuesastheyarise.Allhousing,food,water,transport,andanyothervolunteerneedswillbeorganizedandtakencareofbytheIMHOTeamLead.TheIMHOTeamLeadwillbeinfrequentcommunicationwithallvolunteerspriortotripdeparturetohelpeachpersonpreparefortheirtripandtocoordinatetravel.ForthistripwewillbepartneringwiththeAmharaDevelopmentAssociation(ADA),anindigenousnon‐governmentalandnon‐profitgrassrootsorganizationestablishedin1992bythepeopleoftheAmhararegionofEthiopia.ADA’smissionincludestheeliminationofpovertyandbackwardnessoftheAmharapeoplebypromotinghealth,educationandotherinfrastructureservices.YoucanlearnmoreaboutADAontheirwebsite:www.telecom.net.et/~ada/.Inparticular,wewillbeworkingintheareasinandaroundBahirDar,whichisonthebanksofLakeTana,thesourceoftheBlueNileRiver.
