“So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.” In today’s Gospel of Matthew, Jesus challenges us to go beyond our expected responses to human
interactions. But, challenging as they are, his examples of this “beyond” are nonetheless still finite human actions and limited love. Jesus’ examples are shocking but not nearly so shocking as what he really expects of us: “be perfect” as our “heavenly Father,” who gives Life - “sun rise” and “rain” to “the just and the unjust” alike. Infinite actions. Limitless love. What a challenge!
During the past month or so, we have heard more news about the widespread illnesses and deaths from this new virus named the Coronavirus. Let us pray to our Lord, Jesus Christ, and his Mother, Mary, to intercede for us for all those affected on land and the sea from the danger, the threat and the fear of this coronavirus… and the severe cases of the influenza virus as well.
Our Father, we trustingly pray to you, asking that the Coronavirus (Covid 19) may do no more harm, that the epidemic may be swiftly gotten under control,
and that you restore the health of those affected and peace to the places where the virus has arrived. Welcome into your kingdom the people who have died from this illness and comfort their families.
Sustain and protect the healthcare personnel who are fighting it and inspire and bless those working to control it.
Lord Jesus, doctor of our bodies and souls, we feel impotent in the face of this international health emergency, but we trust in You. Give us peace and health.
Mother Mary, protect us and continue to take care of us, and lead us through your love to your Son, Jesus. Amen.
This Wednesday, February 26th, we celebrate Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Season of Lent. It is a season of penance, reflection, and fasting which prepares us for Christ's Resurrection on Easter Sunday through which we attain Redemption. The Ashes, made from palms blessed on the previous year’s Palm Sunday and marked in the sign of the cross on our foreheads, are a symbol of penance made sacramental by the blessing of the Church. They help us develop a spirit of humility and sacrifice. Let us begin these 40 days till Easter here at Mass and Ash Distribution on Ash Wednesday – see schedule within - and all the Lenten Activities following throughout these six weeks. On Ash Wednesday, we will also distribute a Lenten brochure which will list all activities going on in our Parish.
We encounter God’s perfection in the traces of God’s glory all around us. Let us open our eyes, ears, and hearts each day of this Lenten season for “The Lord is kind and merciful. He pardons all your iniquities, heals all your ills. He redeems your life from destruction, crowns you with kindness and compassion.”
God Bless you. Have a blessed week. Fr. Jacek

ARCHDIOCESE OF NEWARK 2020 LENTEN REGULATIONS
1. The days of both Fast and Abstinence during Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. If possible, the Fast on Good Friday is continued to the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the “paschal fast” to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily His Resurrection. The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence. On a day of Fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted, and two (2) smaller meals, which, if added together, would not exceed the main meal in quantity. Those between ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast. On a day of Abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence. 2. The obligation to observe the laws of Fast and Abstinence “substantially”, or as a whole, is a serious obligation. 3. The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial as penance. 4. The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty*) extends from the First Sunday of Lent, March 1, 2020, to the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, June 7, 2020. *Canon 920, §1. All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year.

SEVEN SUNDAYS OF DEVOTION TO ST. JOSEPH
We are now in the 4th week of the Sunday Devotion to
St. Joseph featured in this Bulletin.
This devotion is said to have started when two Franciscan monks, who were ship-wrecked at sea, clung to a plank for two
days and were saved by a man of venerable appearance who miraculously brought them to shore. When they asked who he was, he replied, "I am Joseph, and I desire you to honor my seven sorrows and seven joys." It is through these Seven Sundays of Devotion that we can do precisely that. Let us offer these prayers each Sunday to honor St. Joseph as we prepare for his Feast Day on Thursday, March 19th.
SEVEN SORROWS AND JOYS OF ST. JOSEPH
FOURTH SUNDAY - FEBRUARY 23 Joseph, loving husband, how bewildered you were when Simeon spoke the words of warning that the
hearts of Jesus and Mary would be pierced with sorrows. Yet his prediction that this would lead to the salvation of innumerable souls filled you with
consolation. Help us, St. Joseph, to see with eyes of faith that
even the sorrows and pains of those we deeply love can become the pathway to salvation and eternal
life. (Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be.)
O blessed St. Joseph, tenderhearted father, faithful guardian of Jesus, chaste spouse of the Mother of God, I pray and beseech you to offer
to God the Father my praise to Him through his divine Son, who died on the cross and rose again
to give us sinners new life. Through the holy name of Jesus, pray with us that we may obtain
from the eternal Father, the favor we ask . . . (Pause) . . . We have been unfaithful to the unfailing love of God the Father; beg of Jesus
mercy for us. Amid the splendors of God’s loving presence, do not forget the sorrows of those
who suffer, those who pray, those who weep. By your prayers and those of your most holy spouse, our Blessed Lady, may the love of
Jesus answer our call of confident hope. Amen
