Mary’s Angel During Pylypivka, the school will be offering ‘Mary’s Angels’ for sale. The Angels are a keepsake of remembrance for deceased loved ones. When an individual purchases an Angel, a prayer card is filled out at the school with the loved ones name. The cards are aEached to an Angel ornament and placed on the ‘Mary’s Angels Tree’ located in the front foyer of the school. A Divine Liturgy will be celebrated by the students and staff on Friday, December 18 at 1:00 P.M. for the intenLons of the loved ones. AMer the Christmas season the Angels will be sent home with each of the families that purchased them. They are a keepsake in memory of their loved ones. Samples of the Mary’s Angel ornaments can be seen in the school office or on the school website. The proceeds from this project go towards Marian Hour Centre, Radio Rosary on CKJS. Each Mary’s Angel can be purchased for $5.00. All orders are to be submiEed by Friday, December 11.
Pylypivka 2015 at Immaculate Heart of Mary School Ukrainian Catholics refer to the pre-‐Christmas fasLng period as Pylypivka or St. Philip's Fast, as it always begins on the feast of St. Philip the Apostle, November 15. In the LaLn Rite, this Lme of preparaLon is called Advent. Pylypivka, which lasts for 40 days, is a Lme of preparaLon before Christmas. The Church offers this Lme to remind us, and to help us, focus on receiving Christ into the world. This fast prepares us for the feast. We should be aware that we are in a Lme of preparaLon, preparing room in our hearts for the Lord as He comes. On December 1, the students will parLcipate in a prayer service to introduce them to the season of Pylypivka.
- Pylypivka Prayer - -‐ prayed with the students each morning at school -‐
Lord Jesus, we ask You to visit our homes and our school. Bring Your peace, joy, and friendship onto our hearts.
Grant us the desire to do good things for other people and to rid our heart of all worries and selfishness.
God, help us make progress in loving You and each other, so that we can truly welcome Your son, the light of the world, into our hearts. Amen
Re-‐registra=on for 2016 -‐ 2017 Re-‐registraLon forms for next school year will be sent home in early January. The deadline for re-‐registraLon will be Wednesday, February 3, 2016. Families with a child registering for Kindergarten or Sadochok in the fall of 2016 should pick up a RegistraLon Form from the office. The registraLon / tuiLon fees for the 2016 -‐ 2017 school year will be printed in the January NewsleEer. IHMS provides a variety of learning opportuniLes and experiences to ensure your child has the best start to their educaLon as possible. We offer an excellent curriculum, supplemented by many extra-‐curricular acLviLes, and encourage all students to make respeciul and responsible choices. ‘Word of mouth’ con=nues to be one of the school’s best adver=sers. If IHMS families have friends or family that are exploring educa=onal op=ons please tell them about Immaculate Heart of Mary School.
Rafiki Bracelets Back by popular demand, the SMAC members have decided to sell Rafiki bracelets (as they did last year). In Swahili, Rafiki means FRIEND. The money raised from the sales of these bracelets will go towards our school goal of raising funds for clean water in a developing country.
The bracelets that we are selling are different from last year’s bracelets. The beads on the bracelets are more colourful and they also have an added silver, Me to We charm. The length of the bracelet is also longer, making it very easy to wear as a long necklace, short necklace, headband or anklet. The cost of these bracelets are just $10 each.
The bracelets will be sold at various Lmes throughout the month of December.
Clean Water for Kenya By donaLng their change during various donaLon drives such as N.U.T. days, ‘water walks’ and Toonie Tuesdays, the students of IHMS will be providing families in our sponsor country of Kenya with clean drinking water. According to the United NaLons, clean water and sanitaLon are luxuries that nearly 2.5 billion people do not have regular access to. By supporLng this cause, IHMS will be helping in providing wells, pumps, pipes and rain catchment systems to people who need it the most. Not only that, regular access to clean water supports farmers in these villages, as well as, providing Lme for young boys and girls to go to school as they no longer need to walk for hours to fetch water from far away and unclean sources. For every $25, one person in Kenya will have access to clean water and sanitaLon products for the rest of their life. Let’s all work together and try to make this world a healthier and happier place for those less fortunate.
’Angel in the Room’ … School-‐wide Project An ‘angel’ will be hidden in each of classrooms, every week, during the pylypivka season. The angel is there to watch over the students and to teach them something about what it looks like to have Jesus in our hearts, and how we are to prepare for the coming of Christmas.
Each week the students, with their teacher, will explore a Biblical virtue, which includes a prompt for discussion and a scripture to focus on. Each week a different virtue will be focused on … such as respect, kindness, generosity, humility, love and paLence. What do our lives look like when Jesus is living in our hearts? What can we do to pracLce the virtues and prepare ourselves for baby Jesus’ arrival at Christmas?

Christmas Concert … celebra=ng Ukrainian tradi=ons! What a great way to get into the Christmas spirit ... take in a delighiul children’s Christmas concert!! TradiLonally IHMS has hosted Ukrainian Week in the spring, highlighted by a beauLful Ukrainian Concert. During Ukrainian Week the students have a wonderful learning experience … being immersed in a ‘Ukrainian theme’ developed by the IHMS staff. For years the staff have wanted to do a Christmas theme for Ukrainian Week, but the Lming was never quite right with the Easter season always taking precedence. This school year (2015-‐2016) a decision was made to combine the Christmas Concerts, and the Ukrainian Concert, into one magnificent producLon!! This year the Ukrainian Concert will take place on Thursday, December 17 and feature all the beauLful Ukrainian customs, tradiLons rituals of the Christmas season. The children will learn about the 12 meatless dishes on Christmas Eve, the symbolism of the didukh (sheath of wheat), Malanka, Ukrainian Christmas carolling, the Feast of Jordan and so much more!
The Grades Kindergarten -‐ 8 students will present their Christmas Concert, at 1:30 P.M. and 7:00 P.M., Thursday, December 17. All students must be in their classroom, dressed in costume, no later than 6:30 P.M. on the evening of the concert. The Christmas Concerts are part of the school program and students are expected to take part in the preparaLons and performance. More informaLon regarding costuming is forthcoming. Both Concerts will be professionally taped and available on DVD. Order forms for the DVD will be on the January NewsleEer.
