What you don’t see can harm you - especially when it comes to lead. Lead poisoning happens when a child gets too much lead in his or her

blood. For children, too much lead in the blood can cause learning problems and growth problems. It can also cause hearing loss and seizures.

While you cannot see it, lead may be in

• Soil• Water from lead water pipes• Paint in older homes• Mini blinds made outside the United States before 1996

Children sometimes eat paint chips and get sick from the lead in the paint. People can also be exposed when lead based paint cracks or peels, or when it is scraped or sanded from the walls.

Watch your child for signs of lead poisoning, such as:

• Tiredness• Pain in muscles or joints• Headaches, cramps and stomachaches• Changes in behavior• Trouble keeping up with schoolwork

A blood test can find out if your child has lead poisoning. Talk to your doctor about being tested.

Every child should be screened before their second birthday.

What parents need to knowLead poisoning is too much lead in the body.

It can cause:• Headaches.• Behavior and learning problems (hyperactivity, for

example).• Hearing problems.• Slowed growth.• Damage to the brain and nervous system.

Th e younger the child, the more damage lead poisoning does.

Where does lead come from?• Paint dust and chipping or peeling paint.• Dust from walls or buildings that are being torn

down.• Th e dirt around construction sites, older homes and

buildings.

What can I do?Get your child tested for lead. Th e damage caused by lead poisoning

can be prevented if caught in time. Pregnant women may also need testing. Lead in a mother’s body is extremely dangerous to the unborn baby. Talk to your doctor. Dust your house often with a damp cloth. Keep cribs and high chairs away from dusty places, such as windowsills.

PHP FamilyCare members can take their children, under the age of 2, to any Sparrow Regional Laboratories for this free simple test.

Fall has arrived. For many this means back to school and lots to do. You need to buy school supplies and probably new clothes. If your child has asthma, you will also want to

put together his or her treatment information for the school. Your child’s school action plan should:

• Be completed with your child, doctor and yourself• Be shared with the school staff• Include the doctor’s phone number• Include the medications your child is taking• Include where the quick relief medication can be found*• Include emergency phone numbers and directions• Include who will be monitoring your child’s asthma while he or she is in school• Include known triggers that affect your child, such as exercise, mold, odors, chalk dust or allergies

Ask the principal or school nurse about the rules of using asthma medicine at school. *The law in Michigan says your child may carry his or her inhaler of the doctor indicates.

By planning ahead with the school and the doctor, your child’s asthma can be kept under control. One of the warning signs that a child’s asthma might not be under control is missing school because of wheezing.

Healthy Weight

Keys to the lifestyle for a healthy weight:

Vaccines help keep children healthy

One of your main jobs as a parent is to keep your children safe. One way to do that is to get them the vaccines they need.

Vaccines, or shots, can protect children from many preventable, serious diseases. It is important that children get the right shots at the right time. Shots might hurt a little but they can help keep your children well. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the following immunizations (shots) before age 2:

Vaccine Descriptions• HepB: protects against hepatitis B• DTaP: a combined vaccine that protects against diphtheria, tetanus,

and Pertussis (whooping cough)• Hib: protects against Haemophilus influenza type B• PCV: protects against pneumococcal disease• Polio: protects against polio, the vaccine is also known as IPV• RV: protects against infections caused by rotavirus• Influenza: protects against influenza (flu)• MMR: protects against measles, mumps, and rubella (German measles)• Varicella: protects against varicella, also known as chickenpox• HepA: protects against hepatitis A

If you have questions about the shots your child needs, contact your doctor. If your child has missed a shot, make an appointment with your child’s doctor. Call PHP FamilyCare at 800.661.8299 or 517.364.8540 if you need:• Help finding a doctor• Transportation• A translator or an interpreterSource: Center for Disease Control and Prevention

Maintain a healthy weight and prevent weight gain

- Even if you are overweight, preventing weight gain is a good thing. Change your lifestyle for good eating habits and daily physical activity. Call PHP and we will send you a pedometer to count your daily steps. Challenge yourself to walk more steps every day.

For more information go to:http://www.phpmichigan.com/Members/Take-Charge-of-Your-Health/Health-and-Wellness-Resourceshttp://www.cdc.gov/healthyweight/

Your child should also visit the doctor at least once a year, even if he or she is not sick. This can help keep your child healthy. The doctor can check your child’s height and weight. This

helps show if your child is growing properly. The doctor may also check for:

• Problems such as high lead levels in the blood or anemia• Vision problems• Hearing trouble • Blood pressure

Your doctor can make sure your child has all of his or her shots. Your doctor may also talk to you about safety issues, such as poison prevention and car seat and seat belt use.

Children with Special Health Care Services (CSHCS)

Will you need to review the health status of your child in the CSHCS program soon? Please let us know and we will be glad to help you. We will try to remind you about this

six months before the review is due. We want to help you get the paperwork taken care of so the review process goes smoothly. Please call PHP FamilyCare at 1-800-661-8299 and connect with our special CSHCS phone line for help with this or any concerns you have regarding your CSHCS child.

To help fi nd breast cancer early, check your breasts for lumps every month, starting at age 20. Your doctor can teach you how to do a self-exam.

You should have your doctor check you every 1 to 2 years starting when you are 30. You should have an x-ray of your breasts (mammogram) every 1 to 2 years starting at age 40. If you have a family history of breast cancer, your doctor may want you to be checked more often. To help fi nd cervical cancer early, have regular Pap smears.

During a Pap smear, your doctor takes a sample of cells from your cervix to be tested. You should have your fi rst Pap smear when you become sexually active or by age 18. You should have a Pap smear once a year until you have had at least 3 normal ones. After this, you should have a Pap smear at least every 3 years, unless your doctor suggests that you need one more often.Remember, prevention is key to live a long and healthy life.

Know your diabetes ABCs

Specifi c blood tests and check-ups are important to have on a regular basis to help you manage your diabetes. Taking care of your diabetes and the conditions that come with it can help

you lower your chances of heart and blood vessel disease. Every step you take to keep your ABCs, A1C, blood pressure, and cholesterol, in your target range will help lower your risk of future heart disease and stroke.

A is for A1C. A1C is a blood test that shows the average amount of sugar in your blood over the past 2 to 3 months.B is for blood pressure. Blood pressure checks how hard your heart has to work to pump blood to your body. C is for cholesterol. Cholesterol is a blood test that tells you about the amount of fat in your blood.

Th e American Diabetes Association recommends the following standards:

Test How Often It Is Done

A1C 2 to 4 times a year

Blood Pressure Every visit with your health care provider

Cholesterol At least every year

Keeping your children healthy

Now is an important time for your child. Your child grows and changes so much in their early years. In order to keep your child healthy, immunize your child against 11 vaccine preventable diseases by

age two. Th e Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the following immunizations (shots) before age 2:

Vaccine Descriptions• HepB: protects against hepatitis B• DTaP: a combined vaccine that protects against diphtheria, tetanus, and Pertussis

(whooping cough)• Hib: protects against Haemophilus infl uenza type B• PCV: protects against pneumococcal disease• Polio: protects against polio, the vaccine is also known as IPV• RV: protects against infections caused by rotavirus• Infl uenza: protects against infl uenza (fl u)• MMR: protects against measles, mumps, and rubella (German measles)• Varicella: protects against varicella, also known as chickenpox• HepA: protects against hepatitis A

You can keep track of these immunizations using the conveniently provided checklist attached to this newsletter. If your child has missed a shot, make an appointment with your child’s doctor. Call PHP FamilyCare’s Customer Service at 1.800.661.8299 or 517.364.8540 if you need:
