Learning Points

As SAP keeps executing on its in-memory vision, SAP In-memory technology is becoming the major piece in SAP solutions portfolio (SAP, BusinessObjects, Sybase)

It is not just a niche toy for few übergeek experts anymore, but is reshaping the way business and IT are going to use SAP solutions, and it is impacting the set of skills required

Look at the different layers of this technology and its extendedlandscape, and how they are mapped into the skills required by different roles in your business and IT teams

[ Why is HP IT so interested in in-memory technology?

Too many resources spent on data movement versus

true processing:

6.8% of processing time spent on ‘real work’

in existing OLTP RDBMS architectures OLTP DBMS Workload Profile- HP Labs, M.I.T., Yale

HP ProLiant DL980 G7 Up to 8 Intel® Xeon® 7500 series processors Up to 8 cores and 24MB L3 cache per processor

World record performance enabled by HP Smart CPU caching

Up to 128 DDR3 DIMM slots Up to 16 slots, PCI-E 2.0 or PCI-X Quad-Port 1GbE embedded NIC upgradable to Dual Port

10GbE

What is HP IT looking at?

Starting with largest single ERP environment within HP IT One production instance per super region, 20+TB individual DB Approximately 30% of HP’s revenue processed, i.e. ~ $37 billion

Why our largest single environment? Highest scaling, I/O and use case pressures

Storage and long-term TCO implications 20TB ERP + 20TB BW = 40TB core footprint

Above does not include associated HA infrastructure, etc

Need to combine OLTP and OLAP at end of the game

Think Big – Start Small

[ In-memory from SAP – what is in the bag?

SAP HANA as a platform As an appliance or in the cloud Multiple licenses models Bundled software products depending on the license

Applications for in-memory computing Customer's home-grown solutions or off-the-shelf

products delivered by SAP or SAP partners Products can be brand new, or existing, but re-

worked to benefit from in-memory technology

In-memory technology Pretty wide term to describe everything that enables

highly efficient storage and high performing processing of (sometimes substantial) data volumes

Being used in multiple product from multiple vendors

[ Major principles of SAP in-memory technology

Keep all required data (aka “hot data”) in main memory Compress data to minimize the footprint

Utilize column storage Disk I/O is no longer an optimization target

No need for pre-aggregated stores and multiple DB indexes Rarely accessed data (aka cold data) can be moved to cheap storage

Cache sensitive data layout and cache-aware algorithms High locality (data that is needed together is stored together) Late materialization (decompress in cache)

Software performance growth is in parallel processing, not clock speed Move data-intensive operations to the data layer

Requires application logic in data layer (example: currency conversion)

“By 2012, 70% of Global 1000 organizations will load detailed data into memory as the primary method to optimize BI application performance.”

- Gartner

SAP HANA Implementations: Critical Success Factors

HP Global Method for BI Implementations1. Business Alignment

A solution for no-problem becomes a problem itself2. Adequate Governance

The effort will cross so many boundaries – organizational, cultural, technical – the obstacles will come from many directions

3. Architecture Blueprint Besides Technical domain, includes Organization, Data, Metadata,

Data Integration, and Information Delivery4. Information Quality

Lack of information quality in the deployed solution – especially for one aimed to support real-time decision making – will cause users moving back to their “reliable” techniques

5. Post Go-Live System on Day 1 is not the same as the system on Day 100

[ Base for success: Solution Architecture…

1. Understand the business and technical use cases2. High-level data architecture3. Software components4. Lifecycle management approach5. Software deployment6. Hardware deployment plan

… plus Team composition and skills

[ Impact of SAP HANA on our careers

Business will need to bring back the meaning of "Business Process Re-engineering" and learn how to provide break-through requirements going beyond "Product groups in rows, Y/Y KPIs in columns"

Business Process Consultants (like EPM) will need to learn how to implement and configure whole new set of applications designed for in-memory computing

BI Designers will need to build all the analytic views in SAP HANA DB and integrate them with new SAP BO Information Designer Tool

Developers will need to start familiarizing themselves with writing in-memory optimized code using new SQLScript language, and few of them may even need to learn "L" –new SAP procedural language for SAP HANA programming

[ Impact of SAP HANA on our careers (cont.)

Security will need to design authentication and authorization around SAP HANA, depending on the discussed scenario

Admins and DBAs will not only get new toy to play, but as well whole new bunch of capabilities and tools to learn

BW folks will get the whole new set of RAM-optimized BW objects to use in their modeling after migration of BW database to SAP HANA

OS/DB migration consultants will get their hands dirty in migrations of existing analytic solutions (like based on SAP/BW) from existing DBMSs to SAP HANA DB

Project Managers will need to keep an eye on the evolution of ASAP Methodology and any in-memory projects related Add-ons to it

Key Learnings

It’s time to learn about SAP in-memory technology –an unavoidable trend for all SAP customers –and start assessing its impact on your business and IT

Get the holistic picture – learn to distinguish three overlapping but different layers – technology, platforms, and applications –and chart the roadmap for each of them in your planning

Think early about how to do proper landscape planning satisfying all requirements to realize the ultimate promise of the HANA platform capable of simultaneous handling both OLTP and OLAP processing
