PROGRAMMING

Across its unique stages and outdoor

spaces, Navy Pier produces and

presents high-quality arts and

culture programs that are free to

all guests. From interactive public

art to DJ sets to live music concerts,

established and emerging artists

and arts organizations showcase

their talents on the Pier and gain

exposure to new local, national, and

international audiences.

Ultimately, the Pier’s vision for

programming is to elevate artists and

create a sense of joy, community, and

wonder amongst Chicago residents

and guests alike.

OUR MISSION

Navy Pier is the People’s Pier, Chicago’s lakefront treasure, welcoming all and offering dynamic and eclectic experiences through partnerships and programs that inspire discovery and wonder. We saw firsthand how families

came to the Pier just for the fun of

being there. People were coming

from every neighborhood.

We thought, this is special.

This is something we should

nurture. This is truly the

People’s Pier.

PARTNERSHIPS

After a transformative modernization,

the Fifth Third Bank Family Pavilion

opened in May 2018 as a reimagined,

contemporary home to 70+ Chicago-

centric restaurants, shops, cultural

partners, and attractions.

Together, the Pier and its partner

businesses employ nearly 3,000

people throughout the year and

make Navy Pier a major contributor

to the local economy.

I love being at Navy Pier and sharing

what I love to make with all of the

people there. I find it relaxing. It’s

so different from what I thought it

would be when I first started.

SUSTAINABILITY

In September 2018, the Peoples

Energy Welcome Pavilion opened

in the heart of Polk Bros Park.

It features an energy-saving green

roof, LED lighting, and low-flow

plumbing fixtures, making it

20 percent more efficient than

a traditional structure.

Made possible by the largest

philanthropic gift in Peoples

Energy’s history, the Welcome

Pavilion greets the Pier’s guests in

multiple languages and previews

all that Navy Pier has to offer.

PHILANTHROPY

To sustain its diverse lineup of free programs all year long, Navy Pier

has hosted fundraising events since 2017 that showcase talented local

artists and promote the Pier’s mission.

The Pier’s first Gala, A Celebration ExPIERience, raised nearly $1.7M.

Two years later, ExPIERience 19 raised nearly $1.4M.

Both events included dynamic performances and honored partners

and civic leaders including the Polk Bros. Foundation, Fifth Third

Bank, PepsiCo Beverages, and The Honorable Rahm Emanuel.

Cheer at the Pier - the Fifth Third Bank Winter WonderFest Premiere,

hosted by the Navy Pier Associate Board, began in 2018 and raises

nearly $200,000 annually.

FIRST EMPLOYER PROGRAM

In 2019, through the generosity of

an anonymous donation, 2 dozen+

seasonal employees were able to

participate in the inaugural year of

Navy Pier’s first employer program

to develop essential skills for the

workplace.

As a mission-driven nonprofit organization, Navy Pier is dedicated to giving back to partner organizations throughout Chicago.

The Pier demonstrates its

commitment daily: by donating

10,000 Centennial Wheel tickets to

local nonprofits every year through

the Community Rides program; by

providing young people with special

needs an opportunity to learn and

work in partnership with the South

Side Occupational Academy; and

by serving as a first employer to

hundreds of Chicago youth.

“…to offer [the students from

Carver Elementary school] a unique

opportunity to leave their school

and neighborhood to go to Navy

Pier…to ride the iconic ferris wheel,

allowed them to share in one of the

great things Chicago has to offer.

It allowed them to see part of the

true beauty of Chicago.

Nearly 120 years ago, when Daniel Burnham envisioned his Plan of Chicago, he did

so free of charge—pro bono publico—for the good of the people. He famously said,

“The lakefront by right belongs to the people,” and as we advance the Pier’s physical,

programmatic, and organizational transformations, his vision remains our inspiration.

In this philanthropic spirit, Navy Pier has always been ‘The People’s Pier.’

As stewards of an extraordinary legacy, we are dedicated to sustaining this philanthropic

spirit, to realizing Navy Pier’s potential, and to providing an authentic Chicago experience

for our millions of guests. Bringing this historic lakefront landmark to life and sharing it

with our guests is a daily privilege.

And, due to the generosity of our many advocates—individuals, corporations, and

foundations—we are able to offer hundreds of free, year-round arts and cultural

programs, bring local artists from across the city to perform on our stages, and develop

impactful initiatives like Community Rides. We create thousands of jobs through our

operations, free programs, and partnerships. More than a moniker, the responsibility

we have as the People’s Pier is an honor that we embrace.

A MESSAGE FROM NAVY PIER’S PRESIDENT & CEO

Marilynn Gardner

President & CEO

Whenever I look out from the end of the Pier, Lake Michigan seems to stretch forever.

I feel similarly when I reflect on Navy Pier’s future: here is a place with limitless potential.

Expansions at Chicago Shakespeare Theater and Chicago Children’s Museum; Offshore,

the world’s largest rooftop bar; Navy Pier’s soon to be opened boutique hotel, The Sable:

these are just a few of the developments at Navy Pier that we’re excited to share with

our guests.

We hope you visit us soon to witness these transformations and watch as the talents

of local artists and our community partners bring the Pier to life. With the continued

support of our generous donors, we’re sure that Navy Pier’s second century will be

so much more than you imagine.
