Summon: Data and Configuration• Catalogue records exported from LMS with persistent URLs to
provide link backs to each catalogue record• Data ingested into Summon and formed basis of the ‘Library
Catalog’ facet • Automated routines devised to export LMS data (new records,
updated records, deleted records) on a daily basis to the Summon server
• IT staff worked with Proquest to harvest content of IR into Summon and create a new location facet “NUIM ePrints”
• Correct mapping of catalogued item formats to their corresponding content types within Summon e.g. DVD=Video; Thesis=Dissertation
• Ability to discover databases by database title

Review of Summon
• User focus groups• Summon Usability Review Team was formed and
focussed particularly on user experience• Team produced feedback document March 2014 • Summon implementation team responded with an
action plan• Functionality of the service modified accordingly• IT staff customised the user interface following a review
of other libraries’ interfaces

3rd Information Literacy & Summon Day
• University Campus Suffolk, Ipswich – Summer 2014
• Concerns we had about using Summon
• Learn about how other Universities have dealt with the same issues
• Customising Summon
• Alleviate our fears...!

The reality?
Us!Them!
maynoothuniversity.ie
A Discovery Tool• Librarians are finding it harder than the students/users
to get used to Summon• We can add friction to their library journey by giving too
many options• % not included –don’t over advertise what’s not there –
if you don’t find it you may need to check the databases
• We often predict difficulties users simply do not have
maynoothuniversity.ie
User Education• We need to change how we teach• Adjust our approach to search strategy

What we did• Inform, involve, include - all staff need to be on board• Record and act fast on feedback• Set up a Summon working group• Look at it with the user in mind• Customisation e.g. Filters, best bets• Marketing is very important
– Easier for new users, challenging for existing users– Videos/LibGuides– “Can I have five minutes?”

How are we doing?

Student Feedback
• Bless you for doing this• I should have started college later, when Summon
existed!• You find stuff you didn’t know to look for• Everything is in one place - great not having to search in
different places • Twitter:
maynoothuniversity.ie
Student Feedback• It wasn't obvious how to save an article
• Couldn't find advanced search - suggest having the word Advanced appear on screen
• Don't like it linking to Wikipedia
• Need to clear filters from previous search
• Couldn’t figure out list - mix of book reviews and books themselves
maynoothuniversity.ie
Library Staff Feedback
• Fantastic overview of collections
• “I wonder how we ever managed without it?”
• Ability to tailor searches & use of filters super
• Easy to work with results e.g. Print, email, export
• Intuitive
• Known item searching is difficult
• Erratic• Overwhelming• Jaw-dropping• Information overload• Usability needs a lot of
work
Positive Not so positive!
