The Situation: Familiar System Becomes a Nightmare

There’s no doubt that Dr. John Meiser knows what it takes to grow a successful medical practice. Board-certified in Allergy and Immunology specializing in treating children and adults with allergies, asthma, eczema and recurrent infections, he founded The Allergy & Asthma Center of Texas in March of 2008. As both a physician and businessman, Dr. Meiser knew that it was critical that he select an EMR and practice management system for his start-up practice, and he knew that he needed to get it right the first time, so he decided to try a software that he had used previously; unfortunately, within a year it was clear that the software did not fulfill the needs of his new practice.

According to Office Manager Jeff McGee, there was a lack of integration with their Immunotherapy software, and the software was “unwieldy to deal with,” without much customization. The billing piece was “a nightmare” and its reporting capabilities “felt almost non-existent.” They were also contending with an outside biller, who, in their own words, “...was not doing a very good job.”

In addition to the critical issues that needed to be addressed, The Allergy & Asthma Center of Texas was having issues related to response times with their old software. Since some machines had the software loaded while others used a remote desktop connection, it restricted what and where they could print. Even with a Spirometry interface, Dr. Meiser’s staff had to manually print and scan in Spirometry results. Dr. Meiser had also previously been forced to dig through files to access patient information that still had to be maintained on paper.

The Solution: AllergyEHR - Along With Comprehensive Training and Support Made a Positive Impact

According to McGee, “After 12 months of trying to make our old software work, we chose AllergyEHR and after a few months of using it, we were convinced that it is the best EMR and Immunotherapy solution on the market. Not only is it the best, it is a true integrated solution for our allergy practice

Implementation of AllergyEHR Equals Happier Staff and Higher Quality of Patient Care

Challenge: A lack of integration within their old system coupled with insufficient billing and reporting capabilities made every process a tedious one. Solution: The seamless integration of AllergyEHR and the attentive support from the Meditab team provided the customization that the practice was looking for.

Results: A more efficient workflow, along with a dedicated support team to help guide them along, has made The Allergy & Asthma Center of Texas a happier place to work, resulting in a higher quality of care provided to patients.

Benefits experienced:

that has allowed us to become more efficient without the headaches of interfaces.”

Once The Allergy & Asthma Center of Texas decided that AllergyEHR was the right choice for their practice, they laid out a clear, effective transition plan, allowing for a smooth implementation. After training onsite with their Meditab representative for about a week, the staff continued to engage using additional online training tools and webinars in order to familiarize themselves with the new system. Dr. Meiser says that Meditab’s level of training “compared to our old software, was like night and day.”

The practice decided to have AllergyEHR installed on every machine in the office, enabling staff to easily find everything they needed on-screen and to print as necessary. One function the team finds particularly useful is the Spirometry interface, as it eliminates redundant scanning and dual-entry, freeing up valuable time for other important tasks.

Dr. Meiser goes on to say that with AllergyEHR, reporting has been “a real pleasure” because with so many useful standard reports, they have not even found it necessary to implement the customizable reports. On the other hand, they have made use of the customizable templates and letters, making exam times more efficient, which ultimately improves the patient experience and frees up more of the doctor’s time.

In addition to the EHR and reporting aspects, Mr. McGee has been very pleased with the billing system, noting that it is “so logical and linear” that they were able to move all billing in-house. He goes on to say that because of this, “our revenues have gone through the roof.”

The Outcome: A Seamlessly Integrated Billing and Clinical Solution

Since The Allergy & Asthma Center of Texas decided to switch to AllergyEHR, Dr. Meiser no longer has to first use one application to review part of his patient’s information, and then a second application for the rest of the information necessary to start a consultation with each patient. Everything is integrated into a single, seamless system, thus solving a major issue.

Prior to using AllergyEHR, preparing claims for billing required staff to “click, and click, and click, and click” to get down to what they wanted to do, which was not practical. In fact, according to one staff member, “If you bill in-house or are considering it, AllergyEHR would be a great choice. We were worried we might be biting off more than we could chew implementing new software at the same time as bringing our billing in-house. But because of the flow, there weren’t any headaches.”

According to Mr. McGee, “With AllergyEHR we’re happier, which trickles down to everyone else. The quality of care has improved, which is in part due to the customizability of the system.

The implementation also went well. Our trainer was a mentor in spirit. When he was here with us for the week of training, he was very knowledgeable. He increased our confidence and I can’t say enough. The support model is like night and day compared to our old solution. I’m really pleased with the service model and like the remote access. We can get support on the line right when there’s an issue or someone gets back to us quickly. Great job, top-notch.

I had two doctors who recently shadowed us to see our software in practice, and I am fully recommending it to them.”

“I would have to say the three biggest benefits we feel the system offers are the ease of training new employees, the logic, power and intuition built into the patient accounting system and the ability to create and customize templates on the fly.”

integration with peripheral devices such as Spirometry has proved to be one of the most valuable aspects.

McGee says, “Using our old software was like driving a car

couldn’t get in there and readily access data and do any kind of analysis. I used to think of new ways to look at data and wonder if our old software could do it. I sleep well at night because with AllergyEHR, I know it’s possible.”

When it comes to advice for other allergists as they search for an EHR, McGee has this to say, “I would say being that
