The Implementation Through more than two and a half years of continuous research and development work, K. S. Thaleck has developed a composite sandwich structure made of concrete and aluminium, pitching it under the name CEton (Concrete Embedded Composite). The exposed concrete elements have a thickness of 60 mm and are characterised by their weight of just 50 kg/ m². This light weight allows retrofitting in existing buildings, taking into account the existing structural analysis. Self-supporting components produced through the composite method only require few anchorage points. An outstanding advantage of CEton is that concrete elements can therefore be manufactured in previously unimaginable shapes. Only in this way was it is possible for K. S. Thaleck to bring the architects' visions to fruition.

The PartnerAn important factor for the success of such ambitious building projects is outstanding raw materials. Even though the wall and ceiling elements and the façade of the showroom are mostly grey, K. S. Thaleck adopted a base of Holcim's White Cement, which he coloured with black pigments. "With Holcim White Cement as a base, we can achieve any colour desired by the architect and ensure a degree of colour consistency," said the Managing Director. The Swiss company Holcim is one the world's largest manufacturers of cement products. In addition to grey cement, the firm also supplies white cement that is used primarily for high-quality architectural elements. Speaking about the collaboration, K. S. Thaleck said, "In Holcim White we have found a partner that consistently offers the same level of quality and ready to work with us on some unusual tasks. The company's employees were always ready

with their extensive knowledge and expertise, which went far beyond the cement sector. We would just like to say thank you for this close cooperation." n"Unbuildable!" - that was the response of numerous fibre

reinforced concrete manufacturers taking part in the bidding competition to build the London showrooms for the bathroom outfitter Roca, based in Barcelona. Its design originates from the well-known office of Zaha Hadid Architects in London, characterised by its organically curved shapes, but it was precisely its reputation of being "unbuildable" that attracted Kruno Stephan Thaleck, the owner of B&T Bau & Technologie GmbH, whose business specialises in constructing extravagant concrete projects. He was chosen as the only one out of 50 candidates to produce highly sophisticated exposed concrete elements. Now, in Bavaria, he is developing textile reinforced, doubly-curved concrete construction parts with the highest

surface quality, which will be installed on the building site in central London within a very short time. The completion date for the construction project is the end of July.

The BuildingClose cooperation with top internationally renowned architects is the philosophy of bathroom outfitters Roca. The office of star architect Zaha Hadid was chosen for the design of the London showroom. The architects from the famous offices drew inspiration for their plans from sliding movements of water, and their designs feature all the building elements flowing into one another. A total of 1,100 m² of exhibition space will be created on the ground floor of an existing building.

Norman – the specialistof garden fireplaces

The company Norman spol. s r.o. was established in 1994 and specialised right from the start in the production of garden fireplaces. The founders of the firm brought to garden fireplace production their previous experience in the production of scrubbed concrete paving and other concrete products. Norman garden fireplaces very quickly penetrated the demanding markets of Germany and Switzerland. They achieved this thanks to the high quality of the materials used, the attractive

designs, the number of possible combinations and the ability to respond flexibly to the changing requirements of major customers. At present the range of Norman spol. s r.o. includes around 220 basic combinations of garden fireplaces, and they are supplied to sales networks in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany, Switzerland, Russia, Lithuania, Finland and Poland. Most of the Norman garden fireplaces are made with a scrubbed or blasted surface, which requires no other surface treatment. This surface is achieved by using crushed stone of various colours, graded sand and white cement. This material is notable for its strength and weather-resistance, and also for its heat resistance when used in combination with a fireclay cladding. The manufacture is based on traditional vibrolithic concrete technology, which ensures that the components have a uniform structure and surface. The significant handmade element in the production of the concrete components makes it possible to produce in limited series and with a large number of colour and shape combinations. structure is always simple enough to allow easy assembly even without expert knowledge and without other materials or special tools. In contrast to the garden fireplaces of many other producers, it is possible not only to grill over charcoal with Norman garden fireplaces, but also to light a decent-sized fire with no risk of damage. It is therefore possible, after a grill, to prolong the evening pleasantly seated in front of the flickering flames. Heating the charcoal for the actual grilling is made easy as a result of the low positioning of the air intake for the firebox, and cleaning the garden fireplace after grilling is simplified thanks to another feature characteristic of Norman fireplaces – a removable stainless steel ash-pan and a stainless steel bar at the edge of the fireplace.Norman spol. s r.o. has a production site in the village of Veleň, not far from Prague, the capital city of the Czech Republic. n

Norman also offers a wide selection of fittings and accessories for garden fireplaces.

Why did you decide to establish your company in Slovakia? To answer this question I should explain my roots, because I was born to a Slovak family living abroad. Other important reasons for choosing the location were, of course, the economic and geographical factors (new rapidly growing market, good infrastructure and a convenient tax system). At the time of the construction boom it was easier to establish a concrete mixing plant or to invest in companies that were already established. However, you decided to produce a product with greater added value in your own company. Did you already have some experience with production of concrete products? When I established ABW I already had shares in a smaller company with a similar specialisation, which I had started. This meant I could explore the market and its special features - the potential and the gap I could break through. I did not intend to use the company to get rich quick. I wanted to create something long term. I saw my opportunity was in products with greater added value, which are also manufactured from white cement, and which are not that dependant on the current economic situation. On the other hand, I like nice things and these products allow me to create and beautify the environment of people I like. What is the greatest achievement of your company, or your own professional career in Slovakia? When I started my business, it did not cross my mind that in ten years time I would be the head of a company which ranks among the top companies in the concrete products sector. I dare say that we achieved this success thanks to a dynamic approach towards analysis of the market demands, investing energy in our own development and the effort to differentiate us from other companies, and not to copy the existing supply on the market. What are the plans of Austria Beton Werk and Josef for the future? In the future we plan to expand our product portfolio to include products with high added value. If we want to achieve this

objective, we need to introduce special processing procedures and utilise scarce and innovative production components. At the same time we want to get more customer-oriented: alsoto provide support and consultancy services. . n

ABW – Discover the beauty of concrete

Mr Lasak, the name Austria Beton Werk evokes the Austrian origin of your company. However, according to the Commercial Register it is a Slovak company with an Austrian owner. What is the truth? As you have correctly said, Austria Beton Werk is indeed a Slovak company, without any connection to other companies. I spent part of my life in Austria, which helped me to understand the concept of the operational and business values of Austrian companies. I adopted these values and decided to establish a company where I could apply them. Hence the name.

The Austria Beton Werk (ABW) company started trading in the Slovak market with concrete

moulded bricks. Nowadays it offers a wide range of concrete products. Josef Lasak is the head of

the company, whose head office has been in the convenient location of Kráľovej pri Senci for the

past ten years.

Who is Josef Lasak? Founder, executive and CEO of the Austria Beton Werk, s.r.o. company. Lasak started his career as a newcomer in the field in 1998, when he moved to Slovakia. Thanks to his determination and sense of business, this tenacious manager won his place among the top producers of concrete products on the Slovak market. In his free time Lasak travels, gets to know new countries, people and their mentality.

At Murexin AG, white cement by Holcim gives high-quality results.

From terraces and façades to hotel lobbies and bathrooms!

inspected upon delivery in the in-house laboratories for each production department. Raimund Wachlhofer (Technical Head, Murexin AG) offers a simple explanation: "It's like cooking. Good quality ingredients play an important role in how the dish tastes. Cement is the same: if the quality is not good enough, our mortars will not fulfil the required specifications and the customer will be unhappy." In Murexin products, cement is not just an ingredient added to the "dish" as an afterthought, but an essential component. Holcim white cement can be found predominately in products provided by the Tiling Technology division, in adhesive and joint mortars used for laying high-quality tiles, natural stone and panels.

In adhesive mortars such as the dust-reduced Flex Adhesive Mortar White KWF 61, the Quick Flex Adhesive Mortar SFK 81 or the special Flex Adhesive Mortar MAXIMO M 41, the coloured components of the white cement alongside the fundamental technical specifications play an extremely important role. A dark adhesive mortar should not "muddy" the visual effect of light or translucent natural stone in the end product. Furthermore, the use of white cement also prevents efflorescence from occurring on the stone. There is one other factor which plays an important role in joint mortars, such as the Joint Mortar FM 60 or the Quick Joint SFX 70: white cement is an essential foundation for achieving a perfect colour palette with up to 25 different colours. The reliable durability of the quality of the cement in terms of its whiteness is yet another important property to consider here, as that is what will guarantee the durability of the colour over a long period of time. Ultimately "ruby red" should stay "ruby red".

Holcim white cement can also be found in the thick build adhesive filler Energy Diamond MAXIMO M 70. "We rely on Holcim white cement because our product must be particularly smooth and spreadable," explains Hannes Schnepf (Product Manager of Energy Saving Systems, Murexin AG).

Raimund Wachlhofer adds, "As the Technical Head, responsible for the end quality of all of our products as well as all Murexin production sites, such as our own production plants in Wiener Neustadt (Austria), Szekszárd (Hungary) and Dubna (Moscow Oblast, Russia), I do not attach high importance to the durable quality of the raw material alone. Murexin AG also sees its longstanding partnership with Holcim in all areas, such as innovations, as an important foundation for our success. I look forward to continuing this collaborative work."

Even if Holcim white cement is not the first thing you notice, the quality it contributes is clear everywhere it is used: in the lobby of the hotel you visit on your next business trip, the terrace of your next holiday home or even in the perfect tiling in your own bathroom at home. n

Murexin AG is the partner for construction professionals who want products and systems that go perfectly hand-in-hand. For example, the Bonding Technology division provides levelling products, adhesives and sealing elements for parquet, carpets, PVC, linoleum, rubber or cork. The Tiling Technology division includes systems for setting and grouting tiles and natural stone for indoor and outdoor areas. Construction Technology offers screed, sealing elements, resin coatings, industrial flooring and restoration products. The Paint and Lacquer Technology division has a range of solutions for painters. Finally, Energy Saving Systems provides certified thermal insulation composite systems.

Murexin AG's high demand for quality is not just limited to raw materials, manufacturing processes and its wide range of products. Ecology and sustainability are core themes. With around 400 employees, Murexin AG guarantees a professional service at all levels and currently has direct sales branches or established subsidiaries in Austria, Germany, Italy, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Slovenia, Serbia, Russia and France. Murexin products are also available through distribution partners in Albania, the Benelux, the Baltic states, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Israel, Italy, Croatia, Kuwait, Macedonia, Romania, Scandinavia, Ukraine and the USA. Murexin AG is a subsidiary of the long-established Austrian group Schmid Industrieholding GmbH The other subsidiaries in this group include Austrotherm, Baumit, Furtenbach, Wopfinger Transportbeton, Lorencic, Wolf Plastics, Ortner and Stransky.

Murexin AG focuses on creating a high-quality product right from the start with its raw materials. Intensive selection processes ensure that the right raw material is chosen for each individual product. Furthermore, all raw materials are thoroughly

Áron Losonczi, the inventor of the Litracon® this option can give ideas to design e.g. illuminated public

statues, street furniture or concrete pavements. The pricing of Litracon pXL® is yet to be defined but according to the preliminary calculations of the manufacturer and the distributor it is expected to cost less than half of a Litracon® panel with similar thickness. – The appearance of the new product is different from the already known Litracon®. That is one of the reasons why I do not regard it as a competitor to our base product Litracon® but much rather as a new element in our product range. We continue the production of Litracon® and we are also planning further developments in this area as our less price-sensitive customers are still very keen on the exclusive appearance of Litracon®. – said Losonczi.

How it all started :In 2001, Aron Losonczi, a graduate architect, developed the new "Litracon" (Light-Transmitting Concrete) building material. The "glass concrete" – as the transparent building material has been popularly known – works by embedding millions of optical fibres into the concrete that transmit light across the hard material. The novelty of material lies in its homogeneous appearance: hair size optical fibres are completely blended into the concrete mixture, so the observer sees a uniform concrete surface, in contrast with previously known glass-concrete solutions. The news of the invention quickly travelled around the world, numerous international articles heralded its birth. The TIME magazine listed it as one of the most important inventions in 2004.Losonczi established his own company, Litracon Kft in 2004, which has been the manufacturer and distributor of the

product ever since. The company, based in Csongrád, Hungary, has been selling Litracon® to many countries including the USA, India and Japan. Litracon® has received several significant international design awards and the world’s most prestigious architectural firms are planning to use it.

Besides its exclusive appearance, the optical fibre-based Litracon® belongs to the upper price-range due to the expensive materials and the special, labour-intensive manufacturing process. Losonczi patented his invention in Sweden in 2002 and as a first result of the international patent extension efforts, he received Europe-wide patent protection this year. Several Litracon® "clones" have appeared on the market since 2006, however, by today it seems Losonczi's patent cannot be bypassed. The first example of this is the inventor’s successful patent infringement lawsuit in Munich in last October.

Csomiép Kft., is one of Hungary's leading precast concrete element producer. Its primary focus is the development and production of steel reinforced concrete structures for civil engineering projects like roads, canals and railway lines. n

Áron Losonczi, the inventor of the Litracon® – Light-transmitting concrete has recently introduced his new product, Litracon pXL®. The new – patent protected – concrete can transmit light similarly to its predecessor Litracon®, however it will be available in substantially larger sizes and at significantly lower prices in the near future. The pixel concrete will be produced by Csomiép Kft in Hódmezővásárhely, Hungary. Hopefully, the favourably priced new product will promote wider acceptance and use of the light-transmitting concrete – said the inventor who will manage the distribution and marketing of the new product through his new company, Litracon Kft.Contrary to Litracon®, in Litracon pXL® "pixel concrete" there are no optical fibers for light transmission but a specially formed and patented plastic unit. The name "pXL" refers to the small light dots or pixels that are distributed evenly on the surface. "XL" emphasizes the large panel size as Litracon pXL® concrete panels can reach storey height, which significantly simplifies their installation. Besides the ingredients, the production is also simpler and cheaper compared to Litracon® and it can be fully factory-produced.

The new product can have widespread applications in numerous areas of architecture and design. It could be used as illuminated facade cover, as shadow wall, partition wall or as a special interior design element. The production of prefabricated non-insulating panels has already started, but the new patented technology will soon enable the production of heat insulating panels or even custom elements moulded on-site. The light dots appear in regular distribution on the surface, just like pixels on an LCD screen, but they can also be specially placed to form unique patterns, texts, logos combined with colours. Beyond flat surfaces, further possibilities include 3D objects, folded or curved forms, hollow bodies, prisms moulded using Litracon pXL® technology. Among many others,

guarantee this directly on the building site," explains Marco Haberhauer, director of the centre. "We are also involved in the development of new formulas that can guarantee maximum efficiency in terms of quality and price. At the same time we offer our customers the option of optimising their current formulas. We also provide employee training for our customers and their customers, which is an important service. Additionally, we have an extensive range of laboratory services for testing concrete and additives."

Bringing the laboratory to the building siteIn 2011, construction companies are now able to inspect the properties of the supplied concrete directly on the building site. Holcim is the first company in Slovakia to offer this mobile concrete testing laboratory service. The construction companies are then able to react quickly to any deviations from the specified material properties, which eliminates unnecessary delays in the construction project. A technician drives the fully equipped mobile laboratory directly to the concrete manufacturing site (the construction site or the

concrete factory). The laboratory makes it possible to test the quality of the freshly mixed concrete in all possible outdoor conditions during its manufacture and use. The mobile laboratory can carry out up to 90% of the tests that are usually run in a traditional laboratory, directly on site.

The centre is at the ready"We want to invite our customers — all concrete factories, draftsmen, architects and anyone who comes into contact with our products — to use the centre. We are excited to use our expertise to develop new formulas that are tailor-made to suit our customers," Marco Haberhauer says, and adds examples of projects the centre has already had a hand in implementing. "We worked with Duktus in Tyrol to manufacture pipes for drinking water. This involved very thin concrete pipes, made only of cement, sand and water mixed at ratios that would produce sufficiently durable high-quality concrete. The fresh concrete was poured into a mould in thin layers. We have also succeeded in optimising many of our customers' projects in Slovakia in just a short time." n

Technical centre of excellence assists customers through innovation

Holcim Slovensko cement, additives, concrete and services are developed with the aim of helping to improve the competitivity of Holcim's consumers: construction companies, manufacturers of wet concrete, prefabricated parts and membranes and retail traders. For this reason Holcim brings product innovations and new services to the market that save its customers money or allow them to produce brand new products. Some of the innovations Holcim Slovensko has introduced include the cooling of concrete using nitrogen, a hydraulic bonding agent, packaged cement traded under a brand name so that customers can recognise it more easily and the expansion of the concrete factory network through which customers can purchase wet concrete from one place as desired, as well as hybrid rock, packaged cement and plaster, and special types of concrete such as Steelpact and Floorpact which save construction companies time and money. Holcim is launching innovations at an ever increasing rate. The opening of the technical centre of excellence in November 2010 represented the start of a new chapter for the company.

Experts you can rely onHolcim sees the technical centre of excellence as a tool for closer collaboration with customers and also with architects and draftsmen in future. The centre's main objective is to ensure that the customer is provided with application consultancy services with the help of modern Holcim laboratories, so that consumers can use Holcim products to their maximum value at an optimum price. "We offer our customers the opportunity to make use of our experience and technical support directly on site. We inspect their concrete and additive samples based on their specifications and can

customers have been protected from the enormous pressure of increasing prices of gas and petcoke and more than 5400 tons of waste oil and plastics have been energy recovered rather than land-filled or incinerated.

How does all this relate to emissions? Imagine the waste now used in cement plant would be treated as usual. Emissions would be generated from incinerator (similar as cement plant) or landfill (where methane is generated, a green-house gas multiple times more impactful than CO2). At the same time, the cement plant would use traditional fuels, such as gas or petcoke. Emissions in total would therefore be higher.

In the case of Rohožník white cement production, one can see slight increase in NOx, SO2 and HCl emissions, mainly due to usage of alternative fuels (plastics contain a lot of chlorine). This is however, significantly less than if the plastics were used in incinerator and cement plant would use the usual fuel mix. And HCl emissions have been kept under control also thanks to a Holcim investment in a special facility. Holcim also plans an investment into a facility reducing NOx emissions in Rohožník plant in the coming years, within its voluntary commitment to bring these emissions down.

More importantly, the energy recovery of waste in Rohožník white cement production brings about more than 10000 tons of CO2 emissions saving, compared to “business as usual”. A glimpse into the future€25 mio investment has been recently approved for the Rohožník plant by the Holcim Group Executive Committee. The funds will be used for two projects focusing on further enhancements in efficiency and environmental performance. Power will be produced from waste heat of exhaust gases will be used to generate 20 GWh of electricity annually, an equivalent to annual consumption of one cement mill or 5000 households with 3-4 members in Slovakia. The ReduDust facility, developed as a unique process in Rohožník plant, will clean up the high chlorine content in raw meal, while producing technical that will be mainly used for production of fertilizers.

Using white cement produced by Holcim in Rohožník, does bring new design opportunities into architecture and construction, but also can be a sense of pride, as its producer cares for environmental performance and unlike many others speaks openly about its impacts on the society. n

Cement production is demanding for raw materials and energy and its main impact on environment comes from gaseous emissions.

Waste management and CO2 emissionsFuels are needed to heat and thus change limestone into clinker. Since years, Holcim has used petcoke in Rohožník to replace the traditional natural gas and thus protect white cement customers from the pressure of price increases.

What is, however, truly unique, is that in 2010, Holcim managed to replace almost 30 % of the traditional fossil fuels (natural gas and petcoke) with alternative fuels produced from well defined, separated and treated waste, and all this without impacting the white cement quality. Again,

White cement supplied by Holcim to customers in Central and Eastern Europe comes from its cement

plant in Rohožník, Slovakia. Since 2008, Holcim has been the only company within the Slovak construction industry to publish a Sustainable

Development Report that provides open and detailed information about economic, environmental and

social impacts of the company operation. How does the production of your white cement score?

Chart: The several million Euro investment of Holcim into modern dust filters have brought emissions of dust in Rohožník cement plant significantly down; chart shows emissions of white cement production in Rohožník compared to limit values of individual compounds.

Our plant in EuropeRohožnik, SlovakiaIn 1971, one of the most modern plants in the Eastern Block at that time was founded in Rohoznik. Last year we visited the Wachau region in Austria. This year we invited our top customers from the CEE (12 countries) to Bratislava in Slovakia. After a reception at the new Kempinksi Hotel River Park, situated directly on the Danube, we went on a guided tour of the city, where we learned lots of interesting and historical facts about the capital of Slovakia. After following our guide on foot, we continued our tour on the historical Presporacik "train" and visited the castle at the highest point in Bratislava. A gala dinner at the Flowers Restaurant was the perfect end to the first day.

On Saturday we took a chartered boat along the Danube to the Danubiana Meulensteen Art Museum, situated on an island in the Danube Delta approximately 25 km south of Bratislava, at the border with Austria and Hungary. To round off the Top 30 Event, we enjoyed a lunch on board the boat back to the city.

The Holcim Team would like to thank all of our customers who were able to come to Bratislava and we hope to see you again next year at another special event. As always it is our aim to truly live out our motto, "Excellence in White".

Many thanks,Ing. Josef NowakSales Manager White Cement CEE

On Friday we met at the Kensington Hotel for traditional afternoon tea followed by a short reception. We ate our dinner at the original Frankie's Restaurant and then saw the musical "Mamma Mia".

On Saturday we began the day with a lovely sightseeing tour by bus, where we had the opportunity to see the most important attractions that London has to offer. We enjoyed a glass of champagne as we rode the London Eye. After a typical pub lunch at the Albert Pub, we were able to spend some free time shopping and sightseeing, unfortunately under a never-ending shower of rain. In the evening we went to St Katherine Docks on the north bank of the River Thames to eat dinner at the Dickens Inn Pub, a lovely establishment situated right on the docks.

The "Come and See“ project which we visited on Sunday is called the Roca Gallery by Zaha Hadid and was the highlight of our event. After a speech from Mr Thaleck, the owner of B&T and producer of double curved concrete parts, we had the amazing opportunity to see the building project before its grand opening. There is a detailed report about this project in this issue of the Whiteboard Magazine.

It was impressive to be there at the location and see for ourselves the ways in which concrete can be produced and used. We could see our guiding principle "Strength, Performance and Passion" embodied, with Holcim as the cement supplier, Zaha Hadid as the architect and B&T with its revolutionary ideas. We can only recommend that you visit this building project for yourself.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to all of our customers who were able to take part in this event and to our Marketing Department for its fantastic coordination of the "Excellence in White" event. A special thank-you goes to Mr Thaleck who gave us the opportunity to share in his passion for his work.

Many thanks,Josef NowakSales Manager White Cement CEE

With a new idea in mind this year, we held our VIP event in London, UK.

This new idea was called "Excellence in White, Come and See" and combined a traditional VIP eventwith a visit to a unique project which features our white cement.
