Dear Members of the Glen Waverley Primary School Community, I trust this fortnight’s newsletter finds you and all of the members of your family well. As I reflect on the first half of the year, the first thing that comes to mind is; “Where has the year gone?” Never the less, it has been a fabulous first semester and I take this opportunity to thank everyone for all of your support in making our school such a wonderful learning community where the children have continued to make excellent progress with their learning!

As usual we have so many exciting things to share such as: Farewell to Mrs Bednarz It is with a great deal of sadness that I announce that Mrs Jenny Bednarz will be retiring at the end of this term. Jenny has been a pivotal member of our school’s administrative team for more than 20 years and now looks forward to “slowing down” a little and enjoying time with her family and friends. Jenny, on behalf of the entire Glen Waverley Primary School community, thank you for everything you have done for our school and wish you all of the very best as you move onto the next stage of your life. Welcome to Mrs Elma Siaopo In lieu of Jenny’s pending retirement, please join me in welcoming Mrs Elma Siaopo to the administration team. Elma brings with her many years of administrative experience and will be an invaluable asset for our school community.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT (Cont’d)

27th June 2019 Term 2, Issue 10

Congratulations to our Chess Team Our fabulous Chess Team continue to not only work so hard on their skills but also win tournaments. Recently they competed in the Knox School tournament and placed 1st overall! Congratulations to the following students for your outstanding efforts as we are all extremely proud of you!

Hemish and Archit - Year 5

Ryley, Okith, Rahul, Sanuk and Tejas – Year 4

Nikhil and Omika – Year 3

Vikas – Year 2

Also a special congratulations to Archit, Ryley and Tejas who scored 7 points out of 7 – well done boys! Below is a report written by Ryley: The chess tournament 13/6/19. This year our Glen Waverley Primary School chess team is made up of Archit (Year 5), Ryley (Year 4), Tejas (Year 4), Rahul (Year 4), Nikhil (Year 3), Omika (Year 3), Sanuk (Year 4), Hemish (Year 5), Okith (Year 4) and Vikas (Year 2).

On Thursday 13/6/2019, our team attended a chess tournament held at ‘The Knox School (Wantirna) against 16 other teams with 82 children present on the day. Despite being a winter day, the sun was out and after our rounds we could go outside and be refreshed ready for the next challenges. The fresh air was great, 5 of us managed to get full score after round 4 with the rest of the team doing great. You could see the concentration on everyone’s faces working to secure a win for our school. All this hard work paid off at the end of the 7 rounds with G.W.P.S in the top position. Our combined score of 32.5 means that everyone had qualified for the state finals in October this year! Thank you to Mr Catalano and everyone who believes in us and helped us to make it this far!

School Photographs As you would be aware, this year’s school photographs were distributed recently. On the whole they were of a very good quality however we do have some issues with a few class (group) photographs. As a result these will be retaken during the first week of Term Three. If you have any concerns about your photographs please do not hesitate to see me at school or contact me via email at [email protected] Student Led Conferences A sincere thank you to the numerous families who have attended this semester’s Student Led Conferences and I trust you found them to be an invaluable means for your child/ren to demonstrate the progress of their learning journey. I have had the pleasure of being a “pretend dad” as a number of the children practiced their presentation with me and I was absolutely thrilled with the manner in which they articulated their learning, how they have achieved particular goals and are progressing with their current ones. Well done and congratulations to all of our wonderful GWPS learners as we are all incredibly proud of you!

Dr Gihan’s “Ninja Health Challenge” It has been wonderful to see the manner in which families and the children have taken to Dr Gihan’s Health Challenge. As you would be aware this semester’s challenge was to reduce the amount of sugary drinks and at last week’s assembly Dr Gihan announced that the inaugural winners were:

• Most improved: Adam from 2D

• Most Points: Arush from 3C

• Best Class: Class 2D. - Mrs Lee also completed the challenge which is wonderful!

Congratulations to Adam, Arush and 2D!

As a school community we are so fortunate to have Dr Gihan as an instrumental role model for the children and we look forward to next semester’s challenge ……………. I wonder what it will be?????

School Band Congratulations, thank you and well done to our school band who continue to practice hard every Tuesday morning in order to be ready to perform. Last week the children performed the song, “Shotgun” at the assembly and were absolutely fabulous. Well done and thank you to Ms Wood and the children as your efforts are really appreciated and we look forward to the next performance!

Woolworths Earn and Learn Program Thank you to the numerous families who have collected the Woolworths Earn and Learn Program stickers as it has been wonderful to see the vast amount that have been returned to our school. In fact we have had so many that a number of the children have assisted in making a very special display. Once again, thank you everyone as we really appreciate the support and we look forward to sharing the prizes our school will select after the holidays!

School Attendance – “Every Day Counts Initiative” and Complying with Non-Attendance The importance of ensuring the children attend school every day cannot be underestimated, as a result the Department of Education and Training (DET) have developed the, “Every Day Counts” initiative which in essence involves 3 key aspects:

1. The importance of children attending school every day 2. Ensuring our school is notified of all absences (in advance or on the day) and 3. If our school is not advised, then we must contact families.

Once again, as adults we are very cognisant of the importance of the children attending school every day and also arriving on time. The research is very clear, the more a child misses school, the greater the gap between their peers hence the importance of minimising absences.

However, we are also aware that from time to time the children are not well enough to attend school or they may have other reasons as to why they cannot attend on a particular day. As mentioned above, our school will contact families (send an email) which naturally takes time and also interrupts parents who may be working or studying. Hence it is exceptionally important that we all work together with this issue by ensuring families contact our school if their child(ren) are not at school. I cannot stress the importance of this issue and look forward to even more families assisting us by notifying our school of all absences. As always, if you have any queries pertaining to this initiative or accessing Compass, please see Jenny, Elma, Kylie, Janet or Julie in the main office.

Vacation Care Program Once again our school will be implementing our very own Vacation Care (Holiday Care) program during the forthcoming holidays. Included in this newsletter is an overview of the program and the associated costs. Please be aware that ALL FAMILIES are entitled to a 50% rebate (which is not means tested) plus a further rebate which is determined by your family’s 2017-2018 annual taxable income. If you have any questions pertaining to the Vacation Care program please do not hesitate to contact or see Meetha (OSHC coordinator) or refer to our school website.

Final Day of Term Two Please be aware of the following reminders pertaining to tomorrow:

Tomorrow is the final day of Term Two and the children will be dismissed at 2:30 pm.

Our After School Care Program will subsequently commence from 2:30.

The last day of each term is also a “free dress” day and there is no cost to participate.

An end of term assembly will be held in the gymnasium at 1:45 where the Term Two Kiwanis Club Terrific Kids and Principal Learning Award recipients will be announced.

Parenting Ideas

This week’s article is another by Michael Grose, from Parenting Ideas. In this article he writes about our role as parents and the impact that comparing our children with others can have on our wellbeing. Some of this article connects with our school focus on ‘Growth Mindset’ and self-regulated learning. For a child, comparing their own learning with a peer’s in a judgemental way, can have a negative effect on their willingness to take risks with their learning. We support learners to set their own learning goals, which are targeted at their point of need. We also support students to think about challenge in a positive light – ‘struggle’ is a good thing in learning. Carol Dweck’s work on Growth Mindset, shapes much of how we talk about learning – moving from “I can’t” to “I can’t yet” or “I can try to learn”. You can learn more about this by watching her TED talk on this very subject “The power of believing that you can improve.” So next time you start comparing your child with those of your peers, consider shifting your focus on what they do well and how you can support them to take risks and learn from the things that they ‘struggle’ with.

Avoiding the politics of Parenting By Michael Grose

My daughter, who had a sleep averse baby couldn’t believe her ears when a new mum in a mother’s group proudly announced that her four month old slept through the night. My daughter thought, “What am I doing wrong?” Approaching this mother to discover her sleep secret, my daughter learned that this boast was made on the back of some questionable data. The four month old had slept through the night once, but this mother thought it was worth boasting about. I welcomed my daughter to the politics of parenting where benchmarking of kids’ physical and social development, their behaviour and academic progress can become a constant. The pitfall of benchmarking with other children Comparing your child with others is a stress-inducing and, ultimately, useless activity. It’s hard to resist, as we tend to assess our progress in any area of life by checking out how we compare with our peers. When you were a child in school you probably compared yourself to your schoolmates. Your teachers may not have graded you, but you knew who the smart kids were and where you ranked in the pecking order. Now that you have kids of your own do you still keep an eye on your peers? Do you use the progress and behaviour of their kids as benchmarks to help you assess your own performance as well as your child’s progress? Or perhaps you compare your child to yourself at the same age? Benchmarking children’s progress with that of other children is not a wise parenting strategy. Inevitably, it will lead to parent frustration, as there will always be a child who performs better than your own on any scale you use.

Kids develop at their own rates Each child has his or her own developmental clock, which is nearly impossible to alter. There are late bloomers, early developers, bright sparks and steady-as-you-go kids. It’s the first group that can cause the most concern for parents who habitually compare children to siblings, their friends’ kids and even themselves when they were in school. The trick is to focus on your child’s improvement and effort and use your child’s results as the benchmark for his or her progress and development. “Your spelling is better today than it was a month ago” is a better measure of progress than “Your spelling is the best in the class!”

Page 7: Important Dates For Your Diary€¦ · Important Dates For Your Diary Dear Members of the Glen Waverley Primary School June 28th LAST DAY OF TERM 2 ASSEMBLY 1.30 PM EARLY DISMISSAL

Kids have different talents, interests and strengths So your eight-year-old can’t hit a tennis ball like Novak Djokavic, even though your neighbour’s child can. Perhaps your neighbour’s teenager is a piano virtuoso, while your fourteen year old’s idea of musical talent is listening to Spotify while doing homework. Comparisons are stressful, as they can bear no relationship to children’s interests and talents. It’s better to help your child or young person identify his or her own talents and interests. And also recognise that strengths and interests may be completely different than those of his or her peers and siblings. Avoid linking your parenting self-esteem to your child’s performance Take pride in your child’s performance at school, in sport or their leisure activities. Seeing your child doing well is one of the unsung pleasures of parenting. You should also celebrate their achievements and milestones such as taking their first steps, getting their first goal in a game or getting great marks at school. However, you shouldn’t have too much personal stake in your children’s success or in their milestones, as this close association makes it hard to separate yourself from them. It may also lead to excessive parental pressure for kids to do well, which is an acknowledged source of anxiety for many children and young people. The maxim “You are not your child” is a challenging but essential parental concept to live by. Doing so takes real maturity and altruism, but it is the absolute foundation of that powerful thing known as ‘unconditional love’. Gender matters It’s no secret that different architects developed boys’ and girls’ brains. One major difference lies around timing, or maturity. The maturity gap between boys and girls is anywhere between 12 months and two years, and seems to be consistent all the way to adulthood. Quite simply, girls have a developmental head start over boys in areas such as handwriting, verbal skills and relationship skills. Boys benefit greatly from teaching strategies designed for their specific needs. They also benefit from having teachers and parents who recognise that patience is a virtue when teaching and raising boys, as it seems to take longer for many boys to learn and develop.

27th June 2019 Term 2, Issue 10

CIS Splash Greg Edwards

The last few weeks of a semester is always a wonderful time of reflection for students, teachers and parents. It provides everyone in the school community with the opportunity to look back and see all of the fantastic achievements that have occurred in the last six months. This is highlighted by the Semester One reports that our children receive and the outstanding student led conferences that they deliver to demonstrate their learning.

Having been a member of the GWPS learning community for the last few years I have had the opportunity to see how the school has evolved over this time, with the continued improvements to the teaching and learning made along the way. One of the major changes I have had the pleasure of being involved with over this time has been the way that we conduct our reporting to families, when in Semester 2 2017, we adopted an entirely new approach to this.

During our most recent school review in late 2016, one of the recommendations made by the CIS to improve our teaching and learning was to “develop a whole-school approach to assessment that is connected to the Guiding Statements”

In regards to our new reporting format, one of the most powerful changes has been integrating the school values of Respect, Initiative, Global Empathy and Integrity from the schools Guiding Statements into the beginning of student reports. This is then followed by the ‘You Can Do It – Keys to Success’ of Resilience, Confidence, Getting Along, Organisation and Persistence. As a result of this, we believe that our school assessment and reporting now includes a more holistic view of a child’s progress, inclusive of the academic results of English, Mathematics and Science. Please do not think for a moment that we are placing less value on the student outcomes in academic areas, as we value this aspect of education as much as we ever have before. However, in recent years we have made increased efforts to equally value the School Values and You Can Do It – Keys to Success. A fine example of this has been the implementation of the ‘Learning Pit’ across all classrooms to help students articulate their learning, in particular the struggle that they have gone through to achieve success. The wonderful aspect of the Learning Pit is that it transfers to all aspects of a student’s school life, whether it be in English, Mathematics or finding solutions to their social interactions during recess and lunch.

As I write this piece, I am reminded of the very first question I was asked by my university lecturer when I began my teaching degree, a question which is as still valid today as it was all those years ago. As I sat in the lecture theatre for the first time I vividly remember being asked, “If you could teach a child one thing, what would it be?” I recall that my response at the time had to do with the importance of resilience, however as we moved around the room and heard from others, their responses were similar in the fact that all of them referred to the social-emotional learning of the child. I encourage you to pose the same question to yourself and see what answer you come up with.

So next time, you are thinking about the learning journey of your child, be sure to consider it from all points of view beyond just the academic fields, because as we know, success in life requires a range of personal attributes and qualities, just as much as it require achievement in academic fields.

Hello everyone, and welcome to our Captains’ Corner! The semester is nearly over and here we are for the last Captains’ Corner of the first two terms. We hope that you’ve had a great fortnight. On Thursday 27th June, our school leaders are going to be heading to Mount View Primary School with Glendal Primary for our second Leadership Day. Over the past term, our captains have been working on a positive change project for our school. Our main idea is to provide a leadership program for the Year fives, who are going to be leaders next year in 2020. I can assure you that most leaders are extremely excited for the day.

Some of the Year Sixes attended the Soccer Round Robin on Friday the 14th June. Although the girls got through instantly, around 50 boys tried out through the rigorous tryouts, to try and make it into the team of just 18. Even though some people faced disappointment, everybody played well. On the (wet) day, everyone piled onto the bus and we went off to the soccer courts. We played many close games, going against the five different schools in our district. Glen Waverley did really well with their games. Congratulations to Sofia and Amir for receiving the award!

Chris (Year 1 – The Incident) Dear Mr. Catalano, I would like to share an incident that happened at my house yesterday. My neighbour got hurt after a fall at her home. My mum cleaned her wounds and called 000 for an ambulance. While we were waiting for the ambulance, I read some books to Jenny. When the ambulance came they saw Jenny and checked her blood pressure and heart rate. They also checked her eyes with a small pen torch. When they were looking for it I lent them my mum’s torch and they said when I grow up maybe I could become a paramedic. Jenny thanked me for keeping her entertained with my stories. The paramedics also thanked me for looking after Jenny along with my mum. I felt really happy that I could help Jenny. I believe you would be happy too.

“Oh Captain Dog, you should be punished because you made us all worry!” said Lily Bear.

“Sorry, I won’t do that again!” pleaded Captain Dog.

“No consequences are fixed!” declared Jake Bear.

From then on Captain Dog didn’t annoy anyone ever again!

Mithu (Year 3 – Super Megan) Boom! “Oh no, was that thunder?” Megan had been out to a birthday party all evening and hadn’t noticed that the weather was starting to get stormy. She began walking hoping she would make it home before the weather got worse. Soon it was dark and the rain was pouring and she began noticing lightning flashes reflecting off all of the tall buildings around her. “Oh my, I wonder if I should fly rather than walk?” Megan didn’t like to use her super powers all the time, but she decided that flying might help get her home quickly and safely. She started spinning around and around to transform to Super Megan and then she took off into the air. She was flying so fast dodging all of the trees, poles and buildings. Suddenly she heard a big smash nearby. She wondered if she should stop and see what has happened or keep flying out of the storm. “What if someone was hurt?” she thought. She turned around and started flying towards a crowd of people. As she flew closer she saw that a car had hit a light pole and the driver was stuck. Super Megan tried to lift the pole but it was so slippery because of the rain. Super Megan turned around to the others and yelled, “Everyone grab on! Together they pulled the pole and the man out of the car. Super Megan always thought flying and her strength were her superpowers. That day she learnt that teamwork is a superpower too!

One day two men were working in the forest. They were cutting a huge log of wood. They were using a long saw. They pulled and they pushed, they pushed and they pulled. They made a deep cut in the wood. It was hard work. The men were tired, they stopped to rest. They put down their saw, in the cut of the wedge. The two men sat down to eat. A little while later, they went to sleep. Soon, some monkeys came over. They looked at the men. One baby monkey was very naughty. He ran to the log. He jumped and danced on top of it. His mother shouted ‘GET DOWN NOW! It’s dangerous! The naughty monkey did not listen. He danced and he sang, he sang and he danced. “Cheee! Cheeeee! Wheeeee! Just look at meeeeeeee! I’m a clever monkeeeeeeeeey!” The naughty monkey saw the wedge. He pulled it. The wedge came out there was a loud SNAP! The monkey’s tail got caught Owoooooo! Owoooooo! Shrieked the monkey, the men woke up.

Throughout this year, the School Rebranding Committee has been exploring new uniform options for our school going forward. We have had presentations from Spartan School Supplies, A Plus Schoolwear and Surrey Clothing. Each has presented a variety of uniform options to the committee, which we have shortlisted into a ‘wish list’ of school uniform ideas. In consultation with School Council, the governing body in charge of making decisions about uniform, we have settled on a short list of options for the school community to vote on. We decided to stick with our current colour scheme for a number of reasons. Firstly, within our region the jade and navy colour scheme is unique, making it easier to identify our students and provides a point of difference when we are interacting with other schools, in interschool sport for instance. Secondly, we were also quite proud to learn that the jade, is unique to Glen Waverley Primary School – in fact, it is called Glen Waverley Jade because it is made just for our school. Finally, we were conscious of the fact that not all students would adopt the uniform immediately and we were mindful of the impact on those students, if the colour scheme were to dramatically change. We are really proud of the options that we have shortlisted and feel that they honour the past, while also being forward looking. It has come to a time where we need your input, so we ask that you consider these uniform options carefully and cast your vote using the online survey, which can be accessed by following this link https://forms.gle/2g8LULTovAh1hUxr8. Thank you to the 175 people who have already completed the survey and cast their vote.

Australian Government Payments

Financial assistance available to Parents If your family is eligible, you can receive financial assistance to help meet the costs of your child’s education. Visit the link below for further information:- https://www.education.vic.gov.au/parents/services-for-parents/Pages/financial-help-school-items.aspx Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) Every Victorian child should have access to the world of learning opportunities that exist beyond the classroom. The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund helps ensure that no student will miss out on the opportunity to join their classmates for important, educational and fun activities.

School camps provide children with inspiring experiences in the great outdoors, excursions encourage a deeper understanding of how the world works and sports teach teamwork, discipline and leadership. All are part of a healthy curriculum. CSEF is provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities. If you hold a valid means-tested concession card, or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. A special consideration category also exists for asylum seeker and refugee families. The allowance is paid to the school to be use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child. The annual CSEF amount per primary school student is $125.00. The CSEF payment cannot be used towards voluntary school charges, books, stationery, school uniforms, before/after school care, music lessons, or formals/graduations.

How to Apply for CSEF If you applied for the CSEF at Glen Waverley Primary School in 2017/2018, you do not need to complete an application form in 2019, unless there has been a change to your family circumstances; such as a change of custody, change of name, change of concession card number, or new siblings commencing at the school in 2019. Check with the school office if you are unsure. If you are new to our school please print off the CSEF Application Form (or collect one from the School Office), complete it and bring it to the school office together with your Concession Card.

State Schools’ Relief (SSR) Each year State Schools' Relief assists families who are experiencing financial disadvantages with school clothing, shoes and other essential items. SSR has received additional government funding so that it can help more families needing financial assistance. Students starting prep or year 7 in 2019, who meet the CSEF criteria outlined above, are automatically able to get help with uniforms. SSR will provide basic uniform items and/or a voucher for each student who meets the criteria. The uniform items available for prep students will be advised by SSR during Term 1 2019. How to Apply for SSR Parents of Prep 2019 students must apply for CSEF by the closing date before they are eligible to apply for a uniform pack. Once your CSEF Application has been lodged, and funds received by the school, we will send you a SSR Application for completion and return. Please do not contact SSR directly as they cannot accept applications from parents. The applications for Prep 2019 CSEF uniform packs will be submitted by us in Terms 2 and 3 2019. Please note: the 2019 Prep Package will be determined by the SSR Board mid Term 1, 2019. Shortly after this, all schools will be notified.
