SENIOR EXECUTIVE REPORT HSC COMPLETED Congratulations to our students who have now completed their Higher School Certificate. We have been notified of a number of our students being offered early round offers already and look forward to catching up with our students to hear about their successes in the future. Our Year 12 formal was held at Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley last Wednesday night. With 170 students, parents, friends and staff celebrating the successful completion of thirteen years of schooling. We would like to wish our departing Year 12 students all the best for their future and we hope they are successful in their endeavours.

WASTE OP COMPETITION Rutherford Technology High School is wasting no time, with hopes to clean up the top spot in the Waste Ops film competition. The 2018 Waste Ops short film competition, called for schools to enter their storyboards for a two-minute short film encouraging people to reduce the amount of waste they generate. Finalists Rutherford Technology High School and Kurri Kurri High School, as part of the competition, were given the opportunity to have their storyboards professionally filmed. English teacher and project coordinator Erin Bartlett said a team of eight students created an engaging and “unusual” advertisement about recycling. “The girls thought it would be fun to have Princess Leia and Gandolf having a conversation about recycling. They thought it was something people could relate to,” she said. “They’ve done a fabulous job.” The school’s budding filmmakers and waste warriors include students Anjali Rao, Lucy Smith, Lily Stafford, Ella Crockett, Lili Botfield and Hannah Evans. Ms. Bartlett said the winner will be decided by online voting system, and encouraged people to support the local school. “Please vote for the team. We’re really proud of them, and they put so much effort into the film,” she said. For information on how to vote can be found on our school Facebook page. ADDITIONAL SUPPORT CLASS RTHS has been allocated an additional support class for 2019. We already have two IM (Intellectually Mild Disability) classes and one IO (Intellectually Moderate/Severe) class. In addition we will have a Multi Category (MC) class. This is a great thing for the school as we already have students who meet the requirements to be accepted into this class in our normal mainstream classes. This means that those students identified and accepted will enter a learning environment that is more supportive with specially trained staff and support staff and a smaller class size. The class will commence for the start of 2019. VIVO ASSEMBLY Our last VIVO assembly for the year will be held on Tuesday 27th November. f your child is receiving an award you will receive an invitation via your email this week.

STUDENT ASSISTANCE SCHEME Parents experiencing financial difficulty in meeting school expenses including subject specific fees and uniforms are invited to confidentially contact me to discuss the process. A limited amount of funds is supplied by the Government for needy families to assist with educational expenses. I encourage parents to seek this assistance via the front of-fice or senior executive.

MOBILE PHONE USE AT SCHOOL Students are reminded that use of a mobile phone during class time is not permitted unless approved by the class-room teacher. Phones must be turned off and away in school bags. Use of mobile phones is to be limited to recess and lunch times. Students should not be contacting parents through-out lessons.

The school would also ask that parents do not contact their children via mobile phone during class time. If it is an emergency, please contact the front office and students will be called for. If parents need to collect their child from school, early the school should be contacted to make these arrangements.

EXECUTIVE REPORT The latter part of Term 3 and Term 4 have been a very busy time for the TAS Staff and Students in our subject areas. Last term our Year 12 students completed their Major Project Work in Textiles and Design and Industrial Technology Timber and Furniture. There is always a frantic rush to get these projects finished by the due date with many extra hours being donated by both students and staff. Once all the Major Works were completed and the last of the culinary delights had been created by our Food Technology class with Mrs Rasmus in charge, it was time to hit the books and start revising for the HSC Examina-tions. It was fantastic to see a large number of the students coming into school to see their teachers, working together and gaining those last clarifications of concepts and practising and revising the content. We would like to wish all our Year 12 leavers best of luck for the future and know they will make a great contribution to the community. The students have also been very busy across all other stages. There has been some excellent work completed that the students should be very proud of. Our facilities at the school are high quality, enabling the students to gain a snap shot of what it would be like to work in some of these industries in the future. We are also very excited about the implementation of the new Technology Mandatory Course next year in year 7. There are significant changes to the content and structure, especially with the introduction of mandatory coding content which will prepare our students for the future. The TAS faculty has also been very involved in the CCC implementation for 2018. We have 3 programs and 3 staff members who have developed and delivered their own programs around decorative fibre use, healthy food preparation and consumption and principles of flight using the Boomerang as a centre piece. The TAS faculty would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a wonderful Christmas and looking forward to next year.

YEAR 7 EXCURSION On Thursday 15 November 2018, excited students from 7A joined staff, Ms Scott; Ms Knebel; Mr King, Mr McMullen and Mr Heitmeyer on an excursion to visit Baiame Cave at Milbrodale. Upon arrival, Mr Heitmeyer performed a smoking ceremony to cleanse everyone. He then explained how the accumulated bad of each person was cleansed and taken up to the sky by the smoke and the fire. Students were given an insight and listened intently to the explanations given about each of the pieces of cave art where there were arms, boomerangs and Baiame. From the cave the students had an extensive view of the valley below. Part of the day involved students throwing Boomerangs which was lots of fun and very successful. Throughout the day, students avoided fresh cow pats, rusty barbed wire and loose gravel on the steep track to the top of the cave. Students learned about respect for Indigenous Culture, respect for the owner of the property and respect for them-selves. Their behaviour on the day was excellent and they all agreed it was a great day out. Mr McMullen Science Teacher

YEAR 10 NEWS The start of term 4 has been eventful for a large number of our Year 10 students. We have had 30 students commence their training to be peer support leaders for 2019. This two-day training course trained students to be Peer Support Leaders for our 2019 Year 7 students. Their job will start from week one next year and they have a busy Term 1 ahead of them. Mr Potapcyzk commended the students involved on their commitment to the course. Week 4 has been a very busy time for our students completing their final year exams. We wish all students the best of luck and hope they are satisfied with their achievement for 2018. We have had a number of TSP football students representing RTHS in the upcoming City Valley Cup at Lake Macquarie Football Centre. The annual tournament will see some of our talented Year 10 students competing against schools across the Hunter for the very last competition tournament for 2018. Mr Connaughton Assistant Adviser Year 10

STUDENT NEWS Rutherford Technology High School, Year 7 student Josie McIntosh, was recently selected to participate in the ‘Tap Pack Masterclass’. The masterclass is designed for participants with skills and experience in tap and increases the participant understanding of contemporary tap dance style. Tap students selected to participate came from various schools within NSW. They enjoyed a fun filled two hour masterclass with The Tap Pack at AMPA Dance Studios, Alexandria. After the masterclass, students were invited to attend, and given complimentary front row seats, to enjoy the evening performance of The Tap Pack at Sydney Opera House. We are sure Josie enjoyed the experience and a big congratulations on being selected.

Congratulations to our Year 12 student Kimberley Delaney who has been nominated for consideration for inclusion in ARTEXPRESS 2019 for her piece “Momento Vita”.
