KKINDERGARTENINDERGARTEN NNEWSEWS The crisp fall air is here to stay, but things are
warming up in Kindergarten! The children have
been working hard on being Respectful,
Responsible and Safe and are learning lots. The
children love our literacy program entitled
Superkids. So far we have met Cass, Oswald,
Golly and Alf. The children have learned the
letters and sounds of C, O, G and A; and know
how to correctly write both the capital and
lowercase of each of these 4 letters. Our next
Superkid that we will meet is Doc. Kindergartners
are enjoying the math program, Math
Expressions, and are currently working on
counting, adding, writing numbers and
classifying shapes.
Just a reminder that since the crisp air is here to
stay, children need to be dressed appropriately
each day. Hats, mittens and warm coats are
necessary. Please also practice buttoning,
zipping and shoe tying with your child so they can
become more independent. Thank you!
~Mrs. Marquardt & Mrs. Zompolas

FFIRSTIRST GGRADERADE NNEWSEWS First grade has started off with excitement and
fun. We had our first of two school forest field
trips for the year. While there we sorted soil,
worked with microscopes, and of course went
on a nature hike. We love watching our
students in a fun and friendly environment
during those first few days of school. We
completed the welcome back unit of Superkids
which was a review of skills taught in
kindergarten and now started The Adventures
of the Superkids which will teach new skills and
explore the adventures the characters take in
first grade. In math we are reviewing the
numbers 1-20 and are learning numerous
strategies to add and subtract numbers. The
first month of school was filled with group and
individual assessments in reading, spelling,
writing and math. These assessments will
guide our groups and instruction for the next
few weeks of school. We are looking forward to
meeting and talking with all of you during our
parent teacher conferences on October 20 and
25. Together with you we can make this a year
full of learning and fun for your child.
~Mrs. Majewski & Mrs. Mertes
SSECONDECOND GGRADERADE NNEWSEWS Second grade is off to a busy start! We have
had the opportunity to get to know the students
and the routines of second grade. There has
been a large emphasis placed on respectful,
responsible and safe behaviors. This is so
crucial to being successful learners. It is great
to see so many of the students getting these
successful learning behaviors as habits. Our
second graders have enjoyed getting back in
touch with the Superkids - the students who
are the characters in our reading program. Just
as our second graders have grown and
changed since first grade so have the
Superkids! Be sure to ask your child what the
Superkids have been up to, they are always
part of something! We have also gotten deep
into chapter one in math. The students are
being asked to develop a stronger
understanding of the various math strategies
that can be used to solve basic facts. In second
grade, we need a solid base in basic facts so that
we can be successful when using larger numbers
for addition and subtraction. Your child has been
given a deck of cards to be used at home often to
play the card games that are a fun way to practice
math!
~Ms. Langbecker, Mrs. Seanor, Mrs. Simons
TTHIRDHIRD GGRADERADE NNEWSEWS Third graders have been learning a lot so far this
year. One change for students and parents is the
assignment notebook. This comes home every
night with your child and tells you what homework
needs to get done as well as any additional
communication. Parents should read this every
day and return it to school signed each day.
Breakfast begins at 8:00 every morning. Please
remind your child to have breakfast during
morning recess, not when the bell rings. We are
excited about our trip to the school forest
November 30th! This time of year can be a roller
coaster weather-wise so be sure to watch the
weather and have your children dressed
appropriately for cool mornings with hats, jackets,
and gloves or mittens.
~Mrs. Smith & Mr. Ikert
FFOURTHOURTH GGRADERADE NNEWSEWS On October 12,
4th graders had
the opportunity to
visit a local farm.
Wausau West
FFA students
conducted
demonstrations
about how a dairy
farm operates
and how to care
for the animals.
Through these
hands-on
experiences our
students were
able to
appreciate and acknowledge an important part of
our state culture.
~Mrs. McGrath & Mrs. Witter
FFIFTHIFTH GGRADERADE NNEWSEWS Fifth graders in Mrs. Lucht’s and Mrs.
Fochs’s class have been working on
improving their fluency and comprehension
in reading. Fluency is the speed, accuracy
and expression used when reading
aloud. Please encourage your fifth grader to
read aloud to you or a younger sibling to
help build fluency. We completed district
assessments on these skills to help better
meet students’ needs. These results for
your child will be shared during upcoming
conferences on October 20th and/or
October 25th. Please remind your fifth
grader to practice basic facts of addition,
subtraction, multiplication and division to
make the more complex skills easier to learn
in Math. We continue to emphasize the
Grant School behaviors of Respect,
Responsibility and Safety around the school
and in the classroom. Thank you for your
support!
~Mrs. Fochs & Mrs. Lucht
MMUSICUSIC NNEWSEWS Grant Elementary students have been
working very hard in music class since the
beginning of the year! 4th and 5th graders
have been playing recorders in order to gain
more skills in reading music and playing
instruments. 4th grade began Recorder
Karate this month and have been working
hard to earn their belts! In 3rd grade we
have done a lot of practice of reading notes
of the treble clef in preparation for beginning
recorders in December. 1st and 2nd graders
have been working on singing partner songs
and playing xylophones. In Kindergarten we
have been working on developing our
singing voices, keeping a steady beat, and
using our 4 different voices (whispering,
talking, shouting, and singing voices).
Students in all classes have learned about
Harry Belafonte in September and
Beethoven in October as our Composers of
the Month! In the next two weeks we will
begin working on music for our Winter
Concert on December 14th. Mark your
calendars and be on the lookout for more
information about this event!
~Ms. Reeder
PPHYHY EEDD NNEWSEWS So far in the Gym we have been focused on
low organized games, throwing and catching
activities, and soccer skills. We have also
been tracking the amount of steps we take
during Gym class using the pedometers.
Coming up soon will be fitness activities and
racquet skills.
~Mr. Betry
AARTRT NNEWSEWS Many things have been happening in the art
room this year. Kindergartens began
learning about lines and shapes, and are
now discussing artists that use these in their
work. First graders also started with lines
and shapes, and are now using these simple
shapes to create unique robots. In second
grade we just finished making our three-
dimensional hot air balloons and now we are
learning about cave art. Third graders have
been moving through fall. First we learned
about silhouettes to make our swirl trees,
then we created overlapping pumpkins, and
now we are using leaves as positive and
negative space. Fourth graders stepped up
to the challenge of creating a one-point
perspective cityscape and are now working
on creating value and texture through
shading their dragon eyes. Fifth grade
began with portraits in the style of Pablo
Picasso and are now working on making
three-dimensional Japanese lanterns. Each
grade level has been working with a variety
of mediums and becoming more confident
artists with each new project!
