How can we make a healthy and nutr itioussandwich with a tight budget? This was the challenge given to all the P3 students in the Sandwich Project, which was organized by the Mathematics and English departments. The objective of this project was tointroduce Mathematics and language concepts in an integrated fashion. It allowed students to use Hong Kong currencyin a real life situation, and to plan andbudget a shopping trip using their computer skills. Moreover, this activit y promotes the use of English language in daily life andinculcates moral values such as harmonyand respect.

The students started off by brainstormingand writing their own recipe of a healthy

sandwich in groups; at the same time they

had to plan and budget the cost of their sandwiches using Microsoft EXCEL andother online resources. After that, theybought the ingredients in a nearbysupermarket and made their ownsandwiches at school. Finally, they collated the data and used computerized bar graphs to present the most and least popular ingredients used by the class.

The project was a great success and was well-received by both students andparents. Special thanks goes to all the parent volunteers who accompanied the students to the supermarke t and helpedout in the canteen.

Such an activity that blends education with daily living not

only lets the students practice the knowledge they have learnt, but also empowers them to plan confidently. Thank

you once again. --- Mrs Mak It was

fun to make sandwiches, but it was hard buyingingredients because the

supermarket did not have all thethings we wanted. I enjoyed my

journey to the supermarket and thesandwich making. When I ate my

sandwich, it tasted wonderful!---Ocean Pak, P3J

    Fromthe sandwich making

project, I have learnt that weneed lots of cooperation to havean enjoyable time learning new

    things together. ---Mitchell Chew, P3C

I thinkthe PARKn Shop trip was

very fun. I enjoyed using math tobuy the ingredients and I enjoyed

making the sandwiches. Thesandwich that my group made was a

ham and cheese sandwich. I think itwas really yummy!!!! ---

    Amanda Chen, P3Y

    Studentsprepare theirsandwiches

At first, I thought it was an easyproject. Later on, I found out

that it was actually quitechallenging to work out theexact amount of ingredientsthat I needed for making the

    sandwich. It was a greatexperience.---

    Daniel Lo, P3L

It was a great experience for the students to have a hands-on shopping trip. They are now more aware of how they should use their money. Furthermore, they will try to compromise when they go shopping in the future It is a big step

forward for the students to acquire independence and money concepts when especially planning for spending. It is very important for them as we see there are a lot of problems among youngsters overspending by using credit cards.

To complement the schools One-to-One Laptop Programme and in line withproviding a 21 st century learning environment, the school launched Studywiz inNovember 2009. This is a dynamic online learning platform through which teacherscan deliver a curriculum that fosters collaboration and selfdirected learning.

All Primary 6 and Secondary students have individual accounts that can be accessedfrom any Internet device, including mobile devices. This allows students to accessschool work from home or while travelling so as to revisit lessons or catch up onmissed lessons.

Teachers use Studywiz to deliver lessons with interactive content, real-time feedbackand assessment. They can tap on it to support different learning styles and improvestudent engagement. This application is becoming an integral part of teaching andlearning at SIS.

A feature of Studywiz that parents will like is the parent account system. It gives eachparent a logon id and a password to view all current activities and communicationsrelating to their childrens schoolwork. All our P6 to S3 parents had received theiraccounts by mid March. Studywiz will be a common platform for students, parentsand teachers to learn and share.

    P6 SecondaryExperience

All P6 students wentthrough the secondaryschool experience after theassembly talk. One P6 classwas taken to the Wanchaicampus for a guided toureach day from 1 February to4 February.

Each P6 class was divided into sixgroups and placed into the six S1 andS2 classes. P6 students experienced forthemselves life in the secondary section.Through this opportunity, they alsointeracted with their seniors during formal curriculum time.

Even though some P6 students reectedthat they felt strange in a newenvironment, the general response tothe programme was positive, especiallythose who attended Science lessons inthe laboratory. As such, they look

forward to the real secondary schoolexperience in the next academic year.

We had Chinese Literature, Scienceand Dance lessons at Wanchai. In theCL Lit class, we learnt more about

what we had learnt in P5 in depth. Inthe Science class, we put onprotective glasses before carrying out an experiment for the rst time!Lastly, we learnt about the SwanLake Project in the Dance class. It

was a wonderful experience.Megan Yip, Charlotte Chan & KirstenChan, P6A
