The Marine Chart Division (MCD) at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is a division in the Office of Coast Survey (OCS) responsible for the production of navigational products that are used by mariners to navigate safely and efficiently in US waters.
What Did They Do?NOAA Marine Chart Division accepted an Esri® COTS system that improves how the organization produces its national suite of navigational products. Nautical Chart System II (NCS II), provides complete chart production capability. NCS II utilizes a database approach that allows MCD to store its navigational informa-tion in a central location that ensures consistency between products. NOAA coverage reaches from Guam to the Virgin Islands, and from Samoa to the Arctic Coast. NCS II uses ArcGIS® for Maritime: Charting to produce more than 800 ENC Cells and eventually over 1,000 paper nautical charts. NCS II also pro-vides complete coverage of those charts in Electronic Navigational Chart (ENC) format based on the International Hydrographic Organization S-57 standard.
Do I Need This? Many national mapping and charting agencies around the world like NOAA rely on Esri for the ability to maintain, control, and share their data. ArcGIS for Maritime: Charting enables hydrographic and nautical data products to be created from a GIS-based system with greater flexibility and scalability and along standardized workflows and processes.
“The needs of the global navigation community are constantly changing, and our charts must adapt to those needs. The COTS system from Esri that we have implemented allows NOAA to continue being the provider of choice for accurate and timely navigation data.”
Rear Admiral Gerd Glang Office of Coast Survey Director NOAA
