Principal continued...

Well done to our Year 12 students who are now using the Study Centre on a Friday night. The request to open the centre on this night was widely applauded. The College won its third consecutive ACC Swimming Championship last week. It was a thrilling evening for all those concerned, especially the boys. There was a very excited buzz in the Blue Room restaurant in South Melbourne after the carnival as parents, students, staff and coaches gathered to celebrate. Congratulations to the swim team and to our staff Mr Shane Cotter and Mr Mal Legge. The House Athletics Championship was won by Lisieux House last week. Thank you to the many parents who attended. I was asked by some parents how the College manages to have the boys turn up in the usual school day numbers and have them so willing to take part and mix in with the day. The boys take great pride in their House and this is the result of considerable effort by the College to create a sense of belonging. It was a fun day of healthy competition enjoyed by all. We look forward to hosting the Class of 2006 tonight as they celebrate their 10 year reunion with their former classmates. It is always good to hear of the breadth of experiences that these men have undertaken.

The College staff will be focusing on the College Catholic Identity and Carmelite heritage at our professional learning day on Monday. This is an essential topic for us to consider as we look to remain a relevant place of education for our boys within the framework of our Catholic tradition. This is a student free day. On a sadder note, can we keep Angelo Amato and Patrick Youie’s families in our prayers on the recent passing of their much loved grandmother and grandfather respectively. May they rest in peace in the arms of our loving mother. Almae In Fide Parentis

2016 has begun in tremendous fashion with the annual House Athletics Carnival once again proving to be a big success! All the houses displayed amazing passion, energy, and a wonderful amount of colour as they ran, jumped, threw and kicked their way to claim possession of the golden trophies for this year.

Records were broken, trophies were won and memories were created, especially for the Year 12 cohort who participated in their final Athletics Carnival at Whitefriars College. It was amazing to see the effort that they put into their costumes, as well as the dedication they put into the competition.

Thankfully we experienced great weather and saw a superb display of athletic skills by all competitors. A particular thank you goes out to the teachers and students who helped out in various jobs on the day, without them the day would not have run as smoothly as it did!

Congratulations to the house of Liseux who finished in first place by a very small margin to Edith Stein!

I know that the passion will continue over the course of the year, keep it up boys!

Whitefriars College Learners Are Open to Feedback and a Growth Mindset

Our Learning @ Whitefriars document (http://www.whitefriars.vic.edu.au/learning-at-whitefriars) refers to the learners in the community being open to feedback and a growth mindset. What does this mean for our students? The following article is an extract from Assignment Help (2016).

“There are two primary choices in life; to accept conditions as they exist, or accept the responsibility for changing them.” - Denis Waitley

Mind. One thing which keeps working all the time. The one that never stops. The guiding force that motivates you, guides you, makes you or breaks you. Our mind is the thing which controls most of the functions of the body, be it physical, mental, emotional or spiritual. But how does it work? Is there a process for it or it just keeps boggling us on its own?

According to Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck, there is a mindset which sets the path of working of our mind. There are two types of mindsets:

• Growth mindset

• Fixed mindset

The concepts developed by Carol Dweck on these mindsets are opposite to each other, demonstrating a sharp contrast in the way people with such mindsets think.

People with fixed mindset consider the past experiences as proof of their inherited traits. They do not work ahead on it, such as how to avoid a problem in future from repeating again or how to improve on mistakes. For them, a poor grade in the subjects mean that they are not smart and they do not have the capabilities to score well. Also, if they achieve something, they consider it to be a trait with which they are born with. This may reflect when they interpret that getting the lead actor role in the play for the cultural day means that they are a born actor and the acting skills are gifted to them.

On the other hand, a person with growth mindset thinks completely differently than the ones with fixed mindsets. They keep ‘growing’. Such people see their past performance as an indicative of past effort and their training. For getting a poor grade in the subjects will make them wonder about themselves inside and try to figure out where they went wrong. As a solution, they may think to meet the teacher and develop a better approach towards the subject and try harder next time. On achieving a target, people with growth mindsets see it as a result of their hard work and consistency. For such a person, bagging the lead role in the drama production will be an output of hard work and contributions he gave to the drama club. Optimism reflects in their thought process, unlike the fixed mindset.

As Dweck says, “this growth mindset is based on the belief that your basic qualities are things you can cultivate through your efforts. Although people may differ in every way in their talents, aptitudes, interests or temperaments, everyone can change and grow through application and experience.”

Clearly, the ones with growth mindset have a better approach towards things than the fixed mindsets. It is always required to improve in life and rise above than your existing performance.

Whitefriars College is delighted to offer you an opportunity to experience a lifetime memory with your son at the annual ‘Father and Son’ Evening. This innovative single evening program is part of some special transition events that we offer our Year 8 students and it is happening here in our school community on the evening of Tuesday 15 March.Media attention often feasts on the reality that some famous sportsmen and celebrities fall short of being good ‘role-models’ to our boys… but we are confident that the best role-models are much closer to home. ‘Stepping Up’ taps the very best resources in our own school community… the dads (or grandfathers, older brothers or uncles) of our boys. Be part of this innovative single evening program that gives a signpost to each boy about the best ways he can ‘step up’ to be a good man. This is a great night for the boys as they witness their fathers discussing what it means to them to be a dad (or mentor) and the importance of showing their son what a good man is.

We are bringing Bill Jennings to our school to facilitate this unique experience for you. Bill is the creator and founder of ‘Time & Space’ (www.time-space.com.au), a service he has developed to give people just that – ‘time and space’ for parents and their children to share important moments together in a school community setting. This program has a whole range of memorable moments that include carefully guided interactions with other fathers and their sons.

Fathers will emerge from the night reassured and impressed by the way our students are able to speak up and share insights about their life. And be assured that the night is fun too… full of activities and conversations that will make us smile as well.Come along and enjoy a unique gift – dedicated time with each other in the midst of the special community atmosphere that we have here at Whitefriars College.

Swim Team does a ‘Three Peat’

On Friday 19 February, the Whitefriars swimming team competed for the title in the ACC championships at MSAC.

It was a very exciting night with our team displaying an amazing effort to completely blitz the opposition and lead throughout the carnival. After the medley relays had been completed, the team had lost only one race and set the scene for a sensational carnival.

One of the main highlights was the first race in which Liam Donohue (Year 10) was competing in the Senior 200 meters. He was aiming for a national time and only just missed it, but in the process of trying to achieve this actually won the race for the second consecutive year. He has the opportunity of swimming in this race for the next two years and making it a clean sweep.

We broke two existing records on the night. They had been set by Whitefriars swimmers some 16 years ago. They were our U/16 freestyle relay team (L.Donohue, D.Knight, S.Blackley, T.Warrick) and Nate Tran in the U/14 backstroke. Congratulations must go to these swimmers as these records are getting harder to break each year. This is an indication of how strong the middle and senior age groups are, which goes well for next year.

The junior age groups led by Patrick Zwarts and Connor Ward (U/13) and Nate Tran (U/14) performed to a high level, winning a number of races to help secure the Junior Cup. Nate was involved in four victories and proved to everyone how talented he is. Others who supported these boys were Joel Trudgeon, James Key, Jack Gurrie, Luke Cormack and Harry Rooney.

The upper age groups led by our leaders Daniel Te (U/17), Max Warrick and Will Harvey (Senior) were fantastic all throughout the carnival. They faced some strong opposition from Mazenod and DLS but stuck to the task and contributed to the overall dominant performance by the team.

The margin at the end of the carnival of just over 60 points was just as big as last year. The team won the three trophies for the first time since 2006, which was a great effort. This was due not only to the swimmers, but also to our coach Bob Edwards (Nunawading Swim Club). At the end of last year’s carnival, he identified our weaknesses and devised training around addressing these areas. He worked a lot on starts and finishes which proved a major advantage for the team on the night. A big thank you must go to him.

My thanks must also go to Mr Mal Legge who has joined the squad following in the footsteps of Fr Noel Kierce. He was at all training sessions taking attendance rolls, recording times and making sure that all of the boys knew what was happening throughout the season. I couldn’t do this job if I didn’t have this help. At the team breakfast, Daniel Te spoke about dedicating this carnival to Fr Kierce and I’m sure he was smiling down on us on the night.

My senior age, led by Daniel Te and Max Warrick, have now completed their time swimming for the team. Finishing after 6 years with these titles must be very satisfying for them. I always believe that the team comes together if led from the front and these leaders (Daniel & Max) really lived up to my expectations. They were at training encouraging the juniors and getting the chants happening. Well done on a great season.

Finally, I would like to thank the parents who get their sons’ to the pool for training. This was most important this year with the change of training venues and variations in times of training. I said at the team function, there would be no team without the parents’ support. The College really appreciates this.

Next year is a new challenge for us. We will no doubt be the benchmark for other schools. The team has an opportunity to extend this run, like the early years when we joined the ACC, and try to make it four titles in a row.

Enjoy the title and thanks for the season.

Last weekend the boys did extremely well in representing the College at the Annual Upwey Billy Cart races. Whilst we weren’t able to bring home a first place trophy, the boys efforts over the last four weeks have been fantastic in being able to design, build and race a billy cart. The best effort of the day was Tyler Rodenberg who was able to claim second place in the final of the Ranges Class age 14-16 classification. It was pleasing to hear from members of the Upwey community commenting on how well the boys conducted themselves throughout the day.

I would personally like to thank the Intermediate VCAL staff in Mr Trent Collins, Mr Michael Johnson, Ms Nicolle Earle, Mr Jarrod Ward and Mr Michael Bohan for their work with the boys so far this year. Many thanks to Mr Jeremy Freeman and Miss Punita Mistry for coming out to Upwey to support the boys. Further mention again goes to Mr Collins and Mr Bohan who gave up their Sunday to help out on the day with transportation of the boys and a few billy cart modifications which were required at different stages.

Lisieux takes the House Athletics trophyWhitefriars boys swarmed into the Tom Kelly Athletics track, last Thursday for this year’s Annual House Athletics Canival with all the Year 12s providing amusement in their entertaining costumes.

The day kicked off with the 1500m, hurdles and high jump, where Lisieux had a great start, particularly in the hurdles where we stringed along quite a few podium finishes. Throughout the day the boys’ participation was great, we were filling in close to all events. Usually with these carnivals the house that fills the most events are generally high up in the placings. Big special thank you to Liam McAlary of Year 12, who was super marshalling the boys for their events throughout the day. The last event in the afternoon was the 4x100 meter relay. The current standings were announced just before the first relay was run. Lisieux were in first place, followed closely by Stein who are renowned for having depth with their runners, so it was going to be a close one. Once the relays came to a finish, I was worried we might have lost the lead as Stein excelled in the relays, but we just had to wait for Mr Abrahams to announce the results. It came down to two houses, Stein and Lisieux for the top two places. Luckily Lisieux just edged out Stein for first place, meaning we had won our second Athletics Carnival. I would like to congratulate all the Lisieux students for their awesome efforts throughout the day, as well as the staff for their help running the carnival. As House Captain, I couldn’t be prouder of how the house approached the Carnival, for what was a great day for the College as a whole.

Jack Roughsedge, Lisieux House Captain.

Environment - SET News (Sustainability and Environment Team)

Happy Clean Up Schools Day!

Today, thousands of students across Australia will participate in the 25th Annual Clean Up Schools Day campaign. It’s a time to clean up, maintain, conserve and respect the environment around you. Whitefriars College has been involved for a number of years and this year our Senior Environment Captain, Matt Hodges and Vice Captain, Kenny Ting have been promoting the event and will run an activity during lunch. Everyone can participate in the Clean Up Australia activities. Please check with your local council to view organised sites.

A big thank you to Scott Firmin and the Maintenance Team for their efforts in getting the Outdoor Learning Centre developed. This area was once the Environment Centre that had garden beds and a greenhouse. A shipping container has been donated to the area and a classroom is being developed in this revitalised space. Power and water has been connected. Wooden studs for the walls have been added and the old library doors have been used. A sliding door has also been installed. All materials in the Outdoor Learning Centre are either recycled or reused items. Our Year 8 students put in a big effort Term 4 last year and it’s wonderful to see this area take shape. Stay tuned for more exciting updates.

Year 10 Outdoor & Environmental Studies

Coastal Experience – Point Leo February 22-24

The Year 10 Outdoor Education students took advantage of last week’s warm weather by having their coastal experience at Point Leo.

This trip exposed students to a variety outdoor environment types and understanding the considerations to be made when participating in recreational activities in different environments. Exposing students to; marine, coastal and open grassland environments required different skills and considerations.

We also learned that our itinerary was dependent upon the conditions that were “served up” on a daily basis. Our surfing, snorkelling and sea-kayaking experiences were undertaken when the conditions were optimal. The highlights for many were; catching and riding waves on ”sit-on-top” sea-kayaks as we attempted to paddle to Balnarring Beach for lunch. The steady northerly wind proved too strong (we felt like we were on a treadmill) so we decided that Merricks Beach for lunch would suffice.

The tide times weren’t kind and allowed us only one surfing session but the boys enjoyed some “down” time that the peacefulness of snorkelling provided.

We all enjoyed the peaceful and relaxed nature of the Point Leo camping ground and the fact that our water activities were very easily accessible from our base.

Thanks must go to Ms Akers and Ms Monique Agnew for their wonderful assistance on this trip.

English Learning Area - Debating and Public SpeakingWelcome to 2016.

My name is Liam McAlary and I am the College Debating Captain for 2016. I am very passionate about politics, public speaking as well as researching and discussing social issues such as the Australian republic. In the future, I am interested in pursuing a career in the legal industry, particularly politics or workplace law.

I have done debating at Whitefriars since Year 7 and ever since I started debating, it has become something I am very passionate about and enjoy immensely.

Debating is very well coordinated at the College by Mr Robinson and Ms Fitzsimons, with the help of Mr Wight and Miss Mistry, who are coaching our teams this year.

This year, debating at Whitefriars is extremely strong, with very strong teams in the A grade (Year 12) and D grade (Year 9) competitions in the Ringwood division of the DAV (Debaters Association of Victoria). Our debates are held at Tintern Grammar in Ringwood.

The topics that students in the DAV competition will be debating, as well as the dates and times can be found here.

In addition, the English Learning Area is also running the annual Effective Speaking Competitions for students in Years 7-10. This includes the balloon debate in Year 8 and the slam poetry competition in Year 10.

Moreover, the College also has plans for several other debating activities throughout the year, such as staff vs student debates and other activities that will pop up as the year progresses.

2016 is a very exciting year for debating at the College and we would love to see as many boys as possible get involved from all year levels.

Liam McAlary, Debating Captain

2016 ASX School Sharemarket GameStudents

Do you want to test your financial skills against your mates?

What can you do with $50,000?

Want to learn more about the exciting opportunities presented by the Stock market?

The Commerce Learning area is again offering the chance for students of all year levels to get involved in the Sharemarket Game on the Australian Stock Exchange website.

Participants will get a virtual 50,000 dollars to use in trading on the Sharemarket using the actual live share prices. Students in the game get the chance to win some awesome prizes in the competition which involves students from across Australia. Students can participate as individuals or in a group of 2-4 people (a syndicate).

All students have been sent emails with details of how to get involved. Any student who wants to participate needs to send an email to Sam Scales by 9 March. In your email, give the names of the students in your syndicate (up to 4) and the name of your syndicate. We will then register your syndicate and send you your login details so that you will be ready to begin trading when Game 1 begins on 10 March.

For more information go to https://game.asx.com.au/game/info/school/about-the-game - this is a link to information about the game (students can’t register for the game on the ASX site – you can only do that by letting us know that you want to be involved). Or go to http://www.asx.com.au/ for the full ASX website.

We will also be running some information sessions to help increase student knowledge and understanding of how the Sharemarket works – so get involved to learn and win.

Sam Scales, 2016 Commerce Captain

Dear Parents

Thank you for all your assistance over the past few weeks. Your help in the Library and Uniform Exchange has been very much appreciated. The Canteen and College Services area is very busy and again I ask you to check your rosters and if you have a problem with your rostered day, please try and arrange a swap with another mother or give us a call.

Well done to Mrs Ruth Marr and her team for the Year 7 Dinners, they have been a great success. I gather from the Year 7 parents that they have really enjoyed the Mass and the Dinners. Well done to all concerned.

Deepest sympathy to Mrs Sheila O’Donoghue her sons Michael and John and their families on the sudden death of Mr Frank O’Donoghue. Sheila and Frank were parents in the 1970’s and our love prayers and thoughts are with them all. May he rest in peace.

Breakfast Mrs Liz Van Der Horst, who manages the breakfast, is desperate for assistance. We seem to be gathering so many students who need to eat in the morning. If you could drop in at 8am and help butter (we are using 27 loaves of bread each day) it would be wonderful. Just come by or phone me 9872 8307 as you would be welcomed with open arms, we are desperate for the help. Thank you canteen helpers, we are so grateful for your support.

Uniform Exchange Uniform exchange are desperately in need of shorts. Please drop any uniform pieces into my office or the canteen. Uniform Exchange is open on Tuesdays 12.30 – 2pm and Bob Stewarts shop is open Tuesday and Thursday 12.30 – 2pm

What is ‘Growth Mindset’ about? The past 30 years has seen huge advances in cognitive psychology and the brain sciences. Remarkable research has overturned the picture of the brain as being hardwired at birth and shown that it is remarkably plastic and capable of growth and change throughout life.

Excellence is achieved through the process of learning and deliberate practice and not the result of innate, hardwired, gifts. Practice and effort cause the brain to rewire itself, which we recognise as improvement and learning. These insights have powerful implications for educators and parents. Intelligence is a highly dynamic, diffuse and ongoing process - a process that is imminently teachable and the result of the rewiring of our brain.

The challenge for parents and educators is: How can we put this research into action so we can teach our children to learn more intelligently and become more successful? What do you teach and how do you teach it?

Adapted from ‘The Thoughtful Teacher’ by James Anderson

James Anderson is an expert in helping students become more effective thinkersand the only person in Australia to be certified by Mindset Works (co-founded byCarol Dweck). James will outline Professor Carol Dweck’s research on mindsetsand the impact it has on your child’s learning. Discover useful strategies you cantake home to help develop a stronger growth oriented mindset in your child – tohelp them achieve even greater success in school and life.
