In a community as large as Whitefriars we often celebrate the many achievements of our students, staff and families. We also know that there are times when we gather around one another to offer our wholehearted support to those most in need.

Our community is aware that Will Harvey (Year 12) has serious injuries as the result of a fall he had nearly two weeks ago. Will is in Royal Melbourne Hospital. Tony, Kathy and the family have been most grateful for the many wishes of prayer and support that have been offered. Will remains in a serious condition but is showing positive signs and his body has tolerated the first of many surgeries. He has a long way to go, however the family know that the level of support being offered is a great comfort to them. Our Year 12 boys, in particular, have been regular visitors to the Chapel to offer their own private reflections and prayers and are hoping to see Will back in good health as soon as possible.

We were delighted to read that Thomas Dillon (Year 11) had won first prize in a national poetry competition conducted by the Australian Gifted and Talented Association. A fine effort and indicative of the talent that lies within so many boys in being able to express themselves in this and other forms.

I have been meeting with many different groups of Year 12 students of late over morning tea and asking them about life at the College in general and their aspirations for 2017 and beyond. They are a fine group of young men who have a worthwhile and eclectic set of career ambitions. The most obvious aspect of this lies in the fact that Whitefriars caters for a broad group of boys and enables such a group to enter into wide ranging and interesting professions, businesses and trades.

The Class of 2006 gathered recently to celebrate their ten-year reunion. We had an excellent response from a lively and well meaning set of men who recalled their time at Whitefriars with great fondness. Many of them still live locally.

For some, it was the first time back at the school since their final day of Year 12. We are hosting the Classes of 1975 and 1976 this evening.

Principal’s report continued...

The upcoming Student/Parent/Teacher Conferences provide a valuable opportunity for you to gain knowledge of your son’s academic progress. The conversations with subject teachers will provide further feedback on details reported in the recent Term 1 Academic Review regarding your son’s academic achievement, approach to learning, study habits, organisation, and overall progress. A focus of the discussion will be on how your son can further improve his skills, knowledge and understanding in each subject.

The Senior Years (Year 10, 11 and 12) Student/Parent/Teacher Conferences are scheduled for Wednesday 23 March 2016 1.30 – 5.30pm and 6.15 – 8pm. All interviews will be held in the Library and Undercroft.

Students are required to wear their school uniform to appointments. It is recommended that they bring their student diary to document feedback for reflection on how they can further improve their academic performance.

The College will again use the Parent Teacher Online (PTO) booking system. Details regarding PTO will be sent to families by email.

Middle Years classes will have a normal 4 period day with buses available at the regular time.

The Middle Years (Year 7, 8 and 9) Student/Parent/Teacher Conferences are scheduled for Wednesday 13 April 2016 1.30 – 5.30pm and 6.15 – 8pm.

Families who have been at the College for over 12 months would know that we are seeking accreditation to join the Council of International Schools (CIS). For new families this means that we are benchmarking ourselves against a world standard of schools rather than just locally. CIS accredit over 600 quality schools and 550 universities around the world. Our boys are global citizens and part of this endaevour is to explore what that means.

This is an 18-month process that began last year with a preliminary visit from an overseas and interstate panel who spent a week in the College to analyse whether we were at a stage to undergo such a rigorous assessment. We were one of 22% of schools around the world who were successful with our application going forward.

The most pleasing aspect from that initial report was that the visiting panel found a very close connection between our Mission and Values Statement and the reality of life at our school. The next part of the process is to survey students, staff, parents and the College Board and use that information to look at various sections of the College. All families will receive an explanatory email shortly to indicate how you can participate in that survey. Please take the time to complete the survey, as your feedback will be valuable.

Well done to more than 110 Year 8 fathers who accompanied their son to the father (mentor)/son evening held this week. We have had very positive feedback on this night. This evening enables boys and men to compare notes on what it means to be in relationship with each other within a family setting.

The last of our House mass, dinner and badge presentations will take place on Monday evening. The collective response to these evenings has been very strong and favourable. The enormously positive response form Year 7 parents to the transition of their sons has been most encouraging.

Our senior students have their learning conferences next week. It is an opportunity for the family to discuss the progress of their son with teaching staff and I look forward to seeing you at the afternoon or evening session.

I wish all boys and families a happy, holy and safe Easter and look forward to the term to come.

From our Captains

2016 College CaptainsSeamus Bolton Vice Captain, Thomas Mercuri Captain, Jarrod Sacco Vice Captain

Ronan Oppy Middle Years Captain & Kyle Dodson Middle Years Vice Captain

Wow, what a term this has been! It is hard to believe how quick it has gone and that the Year 12s have only two more terms of study before our exam preparation starts! It has been a term filled with exciting events. Lisieux House won the House Athletics Carnival and Daniel Te captained the ACC Swimming team to a ‘back to back to back’ Swimming trophy. It was great to see all the boys together supporting these events for their houses and the College.

It has been great to see everyone participating and doing their best in their chosen ACC sports, representing the school with pride and compassion. Keep up the good work boys. I’m sure everyone would agree with me that the Year 7 students have settled in very comfortably into the environment we have here at Whitefriars, forming friendships many of whom will become lifetime mates. I walk around seeing boys with smiles on their faces, enjoying the opportunities that are provided to them.

It must be said however this term has been one of hard work and somewhat adversity for the College, especially for the Year 12 boys as a collective. However in light of the hardships many have encountered, there has been a great sign of friendship, unity and above all the special bond the Whitefriars boys have for one another. We must always remember to look out for each other and support those in need.

Have a great Easter holiday break, study hard and keep safe as next term will sure to be bigger and better than the last.

Seamus Bolton, College Vice Captain

10 Things You Need to Know to Develop a Growth Mindset

Our Learning @ Whitefriars document (http://www.whitefriars.vic.edu.au/learning-at-whitefriars) refers to the learners in the community being open to feedback and a growth mindset. The following article is an extract from Assignment Help (2016).

As Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck says, “this growth mindset is based on the belief that your basic qualities are things you can cultivate through your efforts. Although people may differ in every way in their talents, aptitudes, interests or temperaments, everyone can change and grow through application and experience.”

Clearly, the ones with growth mindset have a better approach towards things than the fixed mindsets. It is always required to improve in life and rise above than your existing performance. But if you feel that you are a fixed mindset, then what do you do? Don’t worry; it is possible to develop growth mindset too. Both are things related to our minds, and can be developed or altered as per our choice.

To do so, here are suggestions one should follow to develop a growth mindset. It will help you to look at situations and problems from a new perspective.

1. Acknowledge your imperfections Overlooking your weaknesses means that you will never overcome them, and they will remain problems. Change your way of thinking that mistakes mean failure. Observe them and try to figure out where you went wrong. It is the first step to improve.

2. View challenges as opportunities Its Friday night, you are about to finish up the summary of the project given to you and about to leave, when suddenly your teacher barges into class and loads you with a couple more projects to be reviewed by Monday. You’re in a fix now. What to do? Make excuses because you think it is impossible, or try working till late and submit it before the given deadline? That is where you take the next step to develop growth mindset - view obstacles or challenges as opportunities. Try to see it from a positive view. Try to figure out the outcome if you complete the work - you will learn time management and you will be in the good books of your teacher. What else do you need?

3. Use ‘learning’ instead of ‘failing’ No one is perfect. The greatest scientists we know and have read about are a good example of it. They kept on trying despite failing several times, till they achieved what they wanted. What was their secret? Simple. They never looked at their failures as failures. They interpreted it as learning and areas to improve. This surely helps you to learn through your experiences and improve your performance.

4. Learn from other people’s mistakes Yes! You cannot commit all sorts of mistakes in your life so as to learn from them. You have to look around for examples of other people and learn from them. Everyone around is trying to improve, rise above their current situations and master their skills. But they do fail at times. Learn from their incidents. Try to look at points regarding others’ cases with questions like, why did he do so, what did he do after failing, what will I do if same happens to me, is there any other key to the solution and so on. There can be many more ideas about a situation you see around you. Be vigilant and notice them.

5. Welcome criticism which come towards you Sometimes it happens that we are not able to sort out our problems or the mistake where we went wrong, but others take note of that. They point out at them, which is referred to as criticism. It does seem rude and hurtful, but it is important. It tells that how others react to your performance. It also helps you to look at your own work from a new perspective and see problems in it. Accept it positively and work on it then. This is an important step to develop a growth mindset. A person with fixed mindset will just think that either he cannot do it or the person criticizing him does not like him.

6. Cultivate a sense of purpose Students with a growth mindset were found to be with a greater sense of purpose. They had their questions for each situation, such as why they are doing this, how will they do it, when will they do it and so on. When you get the answers to such questions, you will learn to focus better on your problem.

7. Celebrate your actions rather than your traits Applaud for your actions which have helped you in achieving the target. Do not think that you simply did this or that because you were ‘born’ with it. Hello! We are all born the same. What actions we take after that is what makes us different.

8. Understand the relation between learning and ‘brain training’. The more you train your brain, the more you learn. Brain is like a muscle just like the rest of your body, and it requires training too. Work on improving brain skills.

9. Keep on creating goals Performed well in the science test? Good. Now, what next? Is that it or more efforts can be made? This is where fixed mindset varies a lot from the growth mindset. A fixed mindset will think that he has mastered the skill. He will not think further as to what to do next with his achievement. To improve this, continue creating new goals to be achieved. Think to achieve the same grades as in science, in other subjects too. Or take a pledge to keep improving your performance in every upcoming assessment. Growth minded people know how to continue creating goals to keep them motivated.

10. Keep in mind about time You’re not living in a magical world, where castles can be built just with a swing of a wand. Learning things take time and require patience. You cannot master them just in a minute. Do not lose hope if you feel that the process is lengthy. Maintain consistency and keep on doing it. The effort is worth it for sure.

Famous are those people who kept learning all the time with a thirst to improve. Following these tips will help you move towards a growth mindset, which will surely help you in your education and dealing with further situations in life.

At the age of 87, Michelangelo said, “I am still learning”. This is what made him one of the best artists the world has ever had. It all begins with how you think.

Maths Week 2016 – Theme: Coding

Maths Week was celebrated in the Undercroft. This year’s theme was ‘Coding’. Activities included a Coding Challenge, Online Rice Challenge, the ‘Activity Captains Maths Quiz’ and concluded with a presentation from Swinburne University on Coding. The activities were extremely well supported by students. Of particular note was the Online Rice Challenge where around 80 students came together to help answer maths questions to end world hunger – every correct answer would see the World Food Program donate rice to help those less fortunate – Well done to Mr Charlie Garzia and Mrs Sandra Akers in particular who orchestrated this event on behalf of the boys.

I would also like to acknowledge Ms Fiona Matthews, Ms Rhonda Powling and the Maths Department for organising and supervising the various activities and challenges. Lastly, I would like to commend the efforts of Jason Watkins, Maths Captain, for his support and bringing the whole week together. The faculty’s next enrichment activity is the CAT Competition (Computational and Algorithmic Thinking Competition) – Stay tuned for more details from Mrs Liz Moloney, Maths Enrichment Facilitator.

Thomas Dillon Wins National Poetry Competition – Gifted Awareness Week

It gives me great pleasure to announce that Thomas Dillon (11 T6) has taken out first place in the recent AAEGT National Poetry Competition 2016; an extracurricular poetry competition run by the Australian Association for the Education of the Gifted and Talented.

Thomas submitted a poem around the challenges facing those who struggle with their giftedness. I would like to acknowledge Thomas on his poem which was well paced, reflective and poignant.

I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of Mr Tom Robinson, Mrs Catherine Robinson and Mrs Anita Kay-Taylor who worked with Thomas and Mrs Jill Fitzsimons for her support of this new initiative.

English Learning Area - Debating and Public SpeakingRound 1 write upOn Wednesday 9 March, the Whitefriars A and D grade debating teams had their debates for round 1 of the 2016 DAV competition in the Ringwood division. Our D grade team, consisting of Kyle Dodson, Mark Uhlenbruch and Joel Duggan, were the negative team in their debate on, “That Australia should become a republic.” A brilliant performance from all speakers saw Whitefriars defeat Tintern by 3 points. Kyle Dodson was awarded best speaker. Our A grade team consisting of Tim Mason, Tom Dillon and myself Liam McAlary, also debated the negative for their debate, which was centred around the topic, “That the media should not be permitted to report on criminal cases until after the trial.” Despite a very strong argument and speeches that would make Barrack Obama proud, the A grade team was very unlucky to lose to Mullauna by 2 points. I was awarded the best speaker for Whitefriars.

On behalf of all debaters, I would like to thank Ms Mistry (D grade coach) and Mr Wight (A grade coach) for coaching and supporting the boys both in the lead up to the debate and on the night.

We now look forward to round 2 of DAV debating, which is on Wednesday 20 April and the topics being debated can be found here (http://www.dav.com.au/schools/draws.php?region=region4978b8149efbe).

If you are interested in finding out more about debating at the College, or want to support us, don’t hesitate to contact me at [email protected].

Mr Tom StafordSAS Coordinator

This year for the first time we have held Year Level Golf Tournaments for students in each of Years 7 to 10. Golfers from across these year levels were invited to take part in a 9 hole tournament during a sport afternoon this term. The tournaments were held at Morack Golf Course with Year 7 and 8 playing on Thursday 3 March and Years 9 and 10 playing this week on Tuesday.

The response was very strong with more than 30 players registering to play. While the competition was fierce the boys played in a good spirit and really enjoyed themselves as they got more experience of being out on the course.

Congratulations to following winners at each year level:

Year 7 - Ned Geilman T4

Year 8 – Matt Scutella B2

Year 9 – Cooper Foley T1

Year 10 – Marcus Raptopoulos C1

Thanks to all of the boys who took part. We look forward to seeing you all at some lunchtime coaching sessions during the next two terms in preparation for the ACC Junior Golf Tournament early in term 4.

While the new school year has been a great and healthy start for many students after the summer break, unfortunately this has not been the case for everyone with an array of viruses circulating the community. Whitefriars College has a responsibility and commitment to protecting the health and wellbeing of students and staff as much as possible. As such, while your son’s education is important, there are certain circumstances that may require you to keep your child home from school, even when it seems like they might be able to get through the day.

Specific conditions are outlined in the school exclusion table (link below). While the table refers to primary schools and early childhood settings, the infectious and exclusion periods remain relevant in the secondary school setting in order to protect the health and wellbeing of all individuals.

In particular, if your child has had vomiting or diarrhoea, or feels nauseous without a non-infectious medical history, please do not send them back to school until 24 hours after symptoms have stopped. Certain types of gastrointestinal illnesses may require longer periods of exclusion in accordance with Department of Health regulations.

Any child who has an infection (including common cold viruses) should not be sent to school if they are feeling unwell or have a fever (over 37.5 without paracetamol or ibuprofen). Giving medication in the morning then sending an unwell student to school will temporarily mask their symptoms for which they will likely need collection later in the day and potentially puts other members of the College community at risk.

Rashes and clusters of sores should also be reviewed by a doctor before sending your child to school as these may also be infectious.

It is also a timely reminder that the Victorian Chief Health Officer has confirmed a measles outbreak in the Melbourne suburbs of Brunswick and surrounding areas. Fever, sore throat, red eyes and a cough are typical symptoms, with a rash following a few days later that generally begins on the face then spreads to the rest of the body. If your child has not been fully vaccinated against measles then free catch up vaccine is currently available through your GP or local council for children up to and including 19 years of age.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with queries or concerns.

Environment - SET News (Sustainability and Environment Team)

Today is Earth Hour, The Lights Out event. It started in 2007 in Sydney by World Wildlife Fund, WWF. 172 countries are now involved. It’s more than just turning off lights. Over the 9 years, it has changed laws and policy around the world and re-focuses people’s commitment to the environment. During period 4 today, where possible, the class room lights will be turned off. Think about how you can be a responsible environment citizen. For example:

• Waste - Use the paper recycle bin in the class room and put your rubbish in the bin.

• Don’t buy plastic water bottles from the canteen. Bring your own bottle to school and refill at tap.

• Google where you buy your clothes or sports gear from.

• Avoid food that has Palm Oil as it affects orang-utan habitats.

• Pizza Day lunches – put your pizza boxes in the paper recycling bin.

• Staff – turn off lights, fans, heaters and coolers when leaving the classroom.

• Can you walk or ride your bike or take public transport instead of car travelling?

• Buy food locally at markets to support local growers and reduce your carbon footprint.

• What bank are you with? Research where they invest your money. You’d be surprised.

The Sustainability and Environment Team ran the annual Clean Up Schools Day last Friday. Thank you to 7 Avila, 7 Soreth and 7 Brandsma and their teachers for participating during period 4. A big thank you to Ben Costello, Luke Dittmann, Harry Garlick, Angus Bunker-Smith and Paddy Sanderson for participating during their own time on a very hot Friday lunchtime. Collectively the College picked up over 20kg of waste.

It is with great excitement to announce the College was awarded an Achievement Certificate from the Victorian Government last week. Sustainability Victoria acknowledge the current sustainable practices the College is completing and what needs to be done in the future, like recycle bins, composting, minimising water usage, planting more trees and getting everyone more involved.

Sports Report Mr Gavin KellarFaculty Head - Sport

ACC TennisOn Wednesday the Whitefriars Senior Tennis team played off in the ACC tennis Grand Final at Melbourne Park. The boys earnt this reward after a tough fight last week against Parade, which saw us come out on top by one set. Going into the game against St Bernard’s we were definitely the underdogs, after they comfortably beat us in round 1, however since then the boys had been undefeated so we were ready for the challenge.

After leading 3 sets to 1, after the doubles matches were completed, we gave ourselves a real chance, however things turned in the singles which unfortunately saw a stronger St Bernard’s side come out on top. At the end of the day went down 8 sets to 4, with Mike Chen being the only one able to win a singles game, playing in the number 1 position.

Regardless of the result the boys should all be proud of their efforts in what was great season, and I would like to thank Mr Height ,our Coach, who played a big role in helping us make it as far as we did. Thomas Jacotine, Tennis Captain

ACC VolleyballAfter a short but intense season, in which both the 1st and 2nd teams came up against some valiant opponents, both teams were heading to the finals with one round to go. The first game was tough in harsh conditions, with the temperature soaring into the 30s. It was a hard contest with some points seemingly going on for minutes, but through consistent setting from Adam Currie and Fergus Ward, who also rose for a few spikes, the first two sets were won convincingly. The game was not over and Emmanuel fought hard to win the third set. With some inspiring words from Mr Freeman we were ready to retake the court. We saw some outstanding hitting from Tom Cantwell off the back of Sam Warren’s setting and a seemingly unstoppable Mac Thomas, who didn’t let anything touch the ground and we ended up closing the game in convincing style.

It was now time for the 2nds to take the court, who though inexperienced, were keen to go out and continue their run to the finals. The game was very fast paced and every point intense, but through some inspired setting from Jascha Coetser and Matt Coen the path was paved for the likes of Lachlan Turnbull and Matt Gow to punish the opposition at the net and the game was never in doubt. Christian Monea and Nathan Honey, although relatively new to volleyball, played huge roles to ensure the two sets to zero win, with Pat Wallis being instrumental in every facet of the game.

Both teams are now poised for huge finals games next week at the State Volleyball Centre, taking on the powerhouse Mazenod, which is sure to be a tight and thrilling game.” Tom Battista, Volleyball Captain

Finally thank you to all staff and students for their fantastic contributions towards making our Whitefriars House Athletics Carnival on the 25 February a great success.

Some of the main highlights of the day were:

• Lisieux House taking out the overall carnival

• Dylan Williams breaking the College under 15 High Jump record with a jump of 1.85 metres eclipsing the old record of 1.84 metres set back in 1985 by Anthony Emery.

The other main highlight of the day was the Tom Kelly Fastest Friar. This event is named after Tom Kelly because in 14 years of devotion to Whitefriars Athletics and Cross Country sides, he had such a massive influence on our boys development not only as runners but in their development as ‘gentlemen’ to. Consequently we would also like to congratulate all runners who ran in this race. The winner was Elvis Wang in a time of 11.50 seconds, second place Matthew O’Dwyer in 11.60 seconds and Adrian Di Giovanni with 11.80 seconds coming in third.
