We held our second Careers Fair on Wednesday 7th October and opened our doors to a whole host of local employers and organisations. There were stalls and displays alongside ‘Aspiration Presentations’ on: Using Degrees in the Sports Industry and Football Business (UCFB); Change and Innovation in IT (Skipton Building Society); Apprenticeships - The New Modern Apprenticeships Explained (Craven College); Biomedical Science and Biological Research (University of Leeds); IT Architecture Explained (Skipton Building Society); Hospitality and Wider Careers (Marriott); Vocational Sport Courses (Craven College); CILEX – How to get into the Legal Profession; Accountancy Today (Armstrong Watson); Careers in Aviation and the Travel and Tourism industries (The Aviation Academy); Engineering in the Modern World (Spooner Industries); Careers within a Leading E-Learning Company (Virtual College); UCAS—The Process Explained (Leeds University); Product Design Careers (Jonathan Carey Design); Varying Roles as a Therapist (NHS); Careers as a Medical Consultant—How to Become a Doctor, Modern Nursing Careers and Non-clinical Roles in the NHS (NHS); Careers in Health and Social Care (Craven College); Careers in the RAF; Photography and Harrogate College.

The feedback and comments we received from parents and students alike proved just how important events like this are. They are a great opportunity for you to look into the world of work, help you understand routes of study and open up jobs and careers you had never considered before. The event was a fantastic chance for you to see the career choices available to you and understand pathways and options for life after GCSE and A level.

Our sincere thanks go to all those exhibiting and presenting for their time and involvement in the Careers Fair, without them we could not offer such an event. It was a pleasure to see a number of alumni students showing their success in their chosen careers. Delivering presentations were Naomi Cheikh of Jonathan Carey Designs, and Jonathan Bailey of Virtual College Sales and Marketing team. Representing their companies in the Careers Fair were: Freya Wood of Virtual College; Melissa Hodgson for Marketing at Craven College and Bradley Oliver who is part of the sales team at Spooner Industries.

Don’t ‘Break’ the Rules! The majority of you follow our Personal best rules at break and lunchtime which means everyone gets to enjoy their downtime between lessons. However, I would like to remind you of some of the basic rules which must be followed by all.

iPads can only be used during a wet break and/or wet lunchtime. If you are out and about around school your ipad should be in your bag.

The use of iPads is allowed in the Library, but only for

work related learning. Playing games is not allowed. The Library is not a social area and should not be used to play games...anyone found doing so will be asked to leave. The message is simple. If you’re not coming to read or work, you’re in the wrong place.

Headphones must not be used around school except during

break and lunchtime. The same rule applies to mobile phones, they should only be used at break and lunchtime.

Water is the only drink you can

take out of B Hall at lunchtime, plated food must not be removed.

No food or drink can be taken out of B Hall at breaktime.

You buy, you stay, you eat! Please ensure you invite your manners to lunch. If you misbehave you will be sent to the

back of the queue. The lunchtime supervisor team are members of staff and have the right to put a comment in your planner if you are behaving poorly. We now have a lunchtime detention room in P6 that is open everyday. It will be used for anyone causing serious problems, swearing or persistently challenging the rules of the school. All staff including the lunchtime supervisors can put you in the P6 room.

Finally, please use your lockers. Your bags contain your iPad (as well as your own

personal possession) and should not be left on floors, stairways, tops of lockers or outside.

Bon Voyage! Goodbye and good luck to 34 of our language students who head off on their French Exchange visit to Coutances on Friday 9th October. Mr Radcliffe, Miss Blane Hernandez, Mrs Kitchen and Mrs Wood will take the students on the yearly visit to France.

They will arrive in Coutances (207 miles west of Paris) on the afternoon of Saturday 10th October. After meeting their French families our French explorers will spend the week immersed in French culture and customs.

The group will take in guided tours of Mont Saint Michel, enjoy visits to local markets (time to try out that French!), try their hand at sand yachting in Coutainville, spend time at their exchange school, head off to Saint Malo on a day trip and finish the week with a visit to the D Day Museum at Arromanches and a treat at the caramel factory in Isigny.

The Coutances trip is a real highlight on the school and MFL calendar and is based on strong foundations and links between the two schools. It is an excellent chance to live and breathe French in everyday situations and family life…essential for improving language skills!

We hope you have a fantastic time!

Well played to our Year 9 football team who competed on Monday night. They were unlucky in their first match and despite two fantastic goals from Fin Grimshaw (9PDH) the match ended Horsforth School 2-3 IGS.

The second match, a local derby against Prince Henry’s, Otley finished in our favour with a score line of IGS 2-3 Prince Henry’s. Oliver Doyle (9PB), Morgan Grimshaw (9DSF) and Oliver Adams (9SP) were the goal scorers.

Congratulations to our Year 8 footballers who played Waterhead Academy in the English Schools’ Cup on Tuesday afternoon. It was a fantastic game and the team won 3-2! They battled hard and went two goals up early in the game, with goals from Harry Rayner (8ELC) and Tom Hagan (8RRG). Waterhead Academy then dominat-ed most of the second half and ended up equalising with only 3 minutes to play. It looked like the game would be heading into extra time before Tom Hagan broke through the Waterhead Academy defence and squared the ball to Archie Fawell (8MH) who chipped the keeper and scored the winning goal with almost the last kick of the game. The team are now through to the third round of the English Schools' Cup. Well done and good luck to: Jack Fendyke (8MEH); Reuben Foster (8ELC); Tom Waller (8ELC); Harry Rayner (8ELC); James Patchett (8MEH); Archie Lambert (8AMD); Thomas Hills (8MEH); Lewis Keirs (8MEH); Asa Stevenson-Lowe (8ASH); Barnaby Walsh (8LNR); Morgan Breakspeare (8AMB); Tom Hagan (8RRG); Archie Fawell (8MH) and Luca Clark (8AMD).

Congratulations to our Year 7 football team who continued their fantastic start to the season in the matches played at Prince Henry’s, Otley on Wednesday afternoon. The first match against Prince Henrys finished 1-0, in our favour, with another great goal from Ben McNulty (7FEA). The team played their second match against Horsforth which finished with a victorious score line of 4-3.

An excellent team performance from every one involved, with Tom Dover (7AWD) the star of both matches scoring 4 goals against Horsforth. This great start to the season means the team are top of the league with 5 games played. Well done to all involved: Olli Bentley (7JWK); Louis Carter (7DJJ); Jacob Thompson (7VEC); Jake Kapur (7AWD); Rico Lee (7AWD); Thomas Dover (7AWD); Luke Crompton (7DJJ); Ben McNulty (7FEA); Angus Twigger (7JWK); Sam Connolly (7JWK); Charlie Smith (7AW); Danny Thompson (7VEC) and Cooper Follet (7FEA).

Well done to Jemima Elgood (12RN) who, making her senior relay debut and representing Ilkley Harriers, took part in the Ian Hodgson Mountain Relays in Cumbria on Sunday 4th October.
