Thank you to everyone who played their part so wonderfully yesterday and helped show our school in such a positive light. Morning visitors were taken around the school by 8AMD who acted as very informative tour guides. The feedback we have received, both written and verbal, was extremely positive. Our parents always comment on how you all speak so articulately and proudly about your school. In the evening the displays in classrooms ranged from the scientific and fiery to the dramatic. We had entertaining and interactive displays in all our subject areas: an International Café, Friends of Ham feeding visitors to the MFL rooms, the National Rotary Club Young Chef Competition, a variety of sports on show, rehearsals for our school production ‘Oliver’ and our Science team brought science to life with entertaining and fact filled explanations of all things scientific. The Maths department created a human scatter graph, our CAD and ICT suites were full of students working hard and interested parents watching them design and create. Our Humanities team put on a whole host of activities from Facebook detecting to digging for artefacts in history. On a creative note, our art rooms were full of students and visitors taking part in the National Big Draw Competition...what an evening! So, thank you for your effort and positivity in making Ilkley Grammar School look so fantastic. Our visitors praised your maturity, your smartness, your courtesy and your smiles. You are our best advert; we know that we will yet again have high numbers of applicants for places in Year 7 for next September, and that will be largely down to you!

Community Calendar What is the Community Cup? Throughout the year you will compete, with the other bands, in the Community Cup competition by earning Community points. Last year, I Band proudly lifted the Community Cup…will it be you this year? The tutor group contributing the most points in each year group will also be awarded the coveted ‘Super Tutor Group’ title.

How can I earn points for my Community? You can gain points in any of the community events or ongoing Year Group events such as the Year 7 Readathon, Year 8 Children in Need fundraising, Year 10 and 11 5 aside football and many more. You can also earn points by gaining your Bronze, Silver, Gold or even Platinum awards!

How many points do we get? This table show how many points it is possible for your band to achieve in each event.

That means if every student in your band gets a gold certificate you would earn 6000 extra points!

M3 and M5

Please remember your manners when in the lunch time queue; if you misbehave you will be sent to the back of the queue. Rotating lunchtime sittings are for Years 7, 8 and 9 only.

Years 10 and 11 have optional sittings. Bags must not be taken into B Hall at lunchtime unless you have essential medication (i.e. Epipen or Diabetic equipment).

Are You Doing Your Personal Best? Can I thank the vast majority of you for such a positive start to the year. Your challenge now is to maintain these high standards until July.

There have been some growing issues at lunchtime, that I want to resolve including litter and anti-social be-haviour.

Can I make it absolutely clear that all litter must be placed in a bin. You are responsible for clearing away your own area and leaving it as tidy as you found it. This is particularly important in the sandwich rooms, courtyard cafe, Year 11 Centre and B Hall.

The bag racks near the courtyard are for KS4 only, all KS3 bags need to be put in lockers. Your bag con-tains a valuable iPad and they will end up broken if you leave them around the site.

The lunchtime supervisor team are members of staff and have the right to put a comment in your plan-ner if you are behaving poorly. From this week there will be a lunchtime detention room in P6 that is open everyday. It will be staffed by the Leadership Team, and will be used for anyone causing serious problems, swearing or persistently challenging the rules of the school. All staff including the lunchtime supervisors can put you in the P6 room.

Mr Calvert

School Photographs Catch up sessions for school photos will take place on Friday 2nd October during Periods 3 and 4, sibling (family group) photos can also be taken during lunchtime.

Have Your Say What do you think about in-form? Top of the class, needs to work hard-er...could do better? Have your say in how in-form looks in the future and answer this survey!

Sign Language Course The school is funding 15 places on a sign language course starting after half term. The course will run on Thursday lunchtimes between 12:35pm and 1:20pm in M12. We will meet on a weekly basis for the duration of 5 weeks; this will start on Thursday 12th November and finish on Thursday 10th December. You will need to bring a packed lunch to ensure a prompt start for each session.

If you would like to take advantage of this excellent opportunity then please e-mail your full name, tutor group and a sentence or two about why you wish to take part, to: [email protected].

An expression of interested must be received before Wednesday 7th October. Places are limited so act fast! Miss Brides

Some of our Post 16 Business and Economic students attended the ‘Thrive Yorkshire’ event at The Craiglands Hotel last week. The event is in its second year and is a Business Growth Conference.

The event included a Q&A session about ‘Positive Image’ led by Tina Boden, co-founder of Enterprise Rockers with our A Level students. It was a terrific opportunity for our students to see the variety of businesses in the Yorkshire region. The curriculum links to branding and marketing in the presentation have enabled students to really see how these principles operate in the community. Hopefully the speakers and the event in general gave them a taste what goes on in the world of small business.

The Write Stuff Newly published crime fiction writer, Alison Baille, talked to students in our creative writing club this week. Alison, accompanied by her friend Rowena Harbour, are both ex Ilkley Grammar School students from the class of '65. They were thrilled to be back and delighted to take questions from our budding young writers. Alison talked about her inspiration for her novel 'Sewing the Shadows Together' which gets its title from a line in DH Lawrence's poem 'Bat'. She first came across the poem in an English lesson at the school!

As Alison and Rowena walked back to reception they commented on how intelligent and perceptive the students were in asking their questions. Amongst other memories, Alison also reminisced how her older sister had once rescued Alan Titchmarsh from the school swimming pool!

Well done to our senior netball teamed who played in the Bradford District Netball Tournament last week. The Senior A Team (Year 13) won all of their games, and the Senior B team (Year 12) only lost to the Senior A team. Both teams beat Bradford Grammar School and played fantastically throughout all games. The girls impressed everyone with their performances.

Senior A Team – Winner Senior B Team – Runners-up The full squad were: Rosie Shouler-Harris (13JLI), Eleanor Pilling (11JLF), Grace Malir (13JLI), Alex Murray (11CT), Amelia Fowler (13DXB), Johanna Murray (13JLI), Hollie Morris (13PC), Ella Glover (12LCM), Lucy Jacques (12LCM), Bella Forbes (12SLG), Laura King (12SLG), Cara Woods (12SSS), Milly Horn (12LCM), Eva Atraszkiewicz (12RN), Harriet Jackson (12LCM) and Maya Booton (12AJK).

What a Difference a Fortnight Makes! Congratulations to our Year 9 rugby team who played 4 matches in the White Rose Schools’ Rugby Se-ries on Tuesday night. The result was a real turnaround from their last matches 2 weeks ago, when they played the same opponents but struggled to show their true ability. The results on Tuesday were: IGS 35 v 0 Settle School IGS 25 v 15 Bingley Grammar School IGS 20 v 5 South Craven School IGS 25 v 10 Ermysteads (2wks ago South Craven beat us 50-0)

Well done to Jonathan Kelly (9PB) who scored his first ever try for IGS after only starting to play rugby 3 weeks ago. It was brilliant to see such determination and resilience in our team, they didn’t give up and proved the path to success is to ‘try and try’ again...true Yorkshire grit!

Well played to our Year 10 football Team who played Guiseley last Thursday, they were vic-torious IGS 6—2 Guise-ley...great start to the season boys!

Congratulations to Sam Naylor (11HGW) who took part in the recent Ilkley Triathlon. Sam raced in the team event and took on the challenge of the swim leg. He finished the swim in a time of 6mins 27.8 seconds, which included 2 extra, unrequired lengths, swimming 550m instead of 500m. Sam recorded the second fastest swim time (by 0.15 seconds) and would have been the fastest swimmer if he had swum the 500m required!

Well done to Jemima Elgood (12RN), Sarah Pickering (12TG), Lucy Williamson (13DK), Lucy Jacques (12LCM) and Joanne Williamson (13EM) who took part in the English Schools’ Fellrunning Championship at Calder High School , Mytholmroyd on Sunday 27th September.
