Presidents Report

For a short week, it’s been a busy one. International Director Fred Hofmann lead a team which included Geoff Stockdale, Ross Phillips, John Manks and Ken Mirams to the Rotary Club of Brighton North on Wednesday night.

Brighton North have been a great supporter of our Sabu pro-ject for a number of years and a few of their members have also made the trek to Sabu to check out the work and the on-going needs. President Russell Brewer and the members made us all feel very welcome and Russell presented Fred with a cheque for $2,700 toward the ongoing work in Sabu. The report of the meeting from their Newsletter is reproduced on Page 3.

The Rotary Clubs of Brighton North and Brighton Beach to-gether with the Bayside Council are conducting a Mental Health Forum at the Brighton Town Hall on Wednesday 30th April and members will have received a copy of the flyer from Secretary Roy (also see Page 4).

It seems that RCBN also has a large number of golfing mem-bers and a couple of times a challenge was mentioned re-garding a golf game between the two clubs. Malaria Awareness Day is 30 April and details are contained in the flyer on Page 4. On Thursday night 37 members and partners attended the RSL for a ‘bar meeting” which turned into a very large and noisy dinner meeting putting the RSL kitchen under a lot of pressure. However they coped magnificently and it was a pleasant and relaxing way to ease into the Easter weekend.

We received a note from District during the week regard-ing the severe impact on the Solomon Islands as a result of the devastating floods that occurred earlier this month. According to the information provided 23 people have died and 9,000 are homeless as a result of the combina-tion of flash floods, landslides and strong winds in the capital Honiara. The current concern is over sanitation at the 24 evacua-tion centres which are lacking proper water supply, in Honiara alone. There is a very real risk of an outbreak of disease – including dysentery, malaria, dengue fever and other sanitation related diseases. There has been a ma-jor loss of infrastructure, including water, electricity, roads and bridges.

Estimates are that some 40,000 people in more rural Guadalcanal have also been impacted by this disaster; however this area is more difficult to access and assess. The club has agreed to donate $1,000 to the Solomon Islands through DG Trevor Taylor (9600).

The Rotary Club of Hampton has advised that at very short notice, they have been able to get Holly Ransom as a guest speaker.

Holly has been named as one of the "100 Most Influential Australian Women" by the Australian Financial Review and leading Australian bank Westpac in 2012. Her dedi-cation to driving innovative change within the corporate and non-profit arenas is second to none. She is a young dynamo with a passion for building sus-tainable and thriving communities and is a voice for change both in her home country and abroad. In 2012 Holly was named Western Australian of the Year and is in great demand as a keynote speaker.

Holly is also past president of Crawley Rotary Club which grew from nothing to 100 members in four years with

30% of their membership under 35 and fund raising of over $800,000.

This is a brilliant opportunity to hear a speaker destined to feature on Rotary International Convention stages here on our doorstep.

Hampton has arranged for Holly to speak at the Bucking-ham Motel on Tuesday 29th April at 6.30pm. The cost is $25.00 and any member wishing to attend should con-tact Trish Smyth or myself by Wednesday 23rd April.

Half Column Filler Courtesy of Roy S Paddy McCoy, an elderly Irish farmer, received a letter from the Department for Work & Pensions stating that they suspected he was not paying his employees the statutory minimum wage and they would send an inspector to interview them. On the appointed day, the inspector turned up. "Tell me about your staff," he asked Paddy. "Well," said Paddy, "there's the farm hand, I pay him £240 a week, and he has a free cottage. Then there's the housekeeper. She gets £190 a week, along with free board and lodging. There's also the half-wit. He works a 16 hour day, does 90% of the work, earns about £25 a week along with a bottle of whisky and, as a special treat, occasionally gets to sleep with my wife." "That's disgraceful" said the inspector, "I need to interview the half-wit." "That'll be me then," said Paddy

On Sabu Island subsistence farming gives them one meal a day. Malaria & dysentery are endemic. Clean water is the life blood of any community and in some areas wells cannot be built due to soft sands. So the first Rotary project was to build a mould to make con-crete rings which could then be ‘sunk’ into the soft ground one on top of the other to create a firm and deep well some up to 35 metres deep! In 2007 20 wells had been sunk, now there are 30. The locals break up beach gravel to eventually make the cement powder! Self-help is a strong culture within the Subanese people. Sanita-tion also improves when water is available. A review of 2013 projects were listed and included pro-gress in building a septic tank/toilet system, use of family sized mosquito nets, water filters financed by RCBN, use of $9200 from RC’s Beaumaris & Brighton North for a Student Hostel, a new teachers house at a remote hos-tel, more wells and Sister Susie’s vegetable garden pro-ject and a new computer for a teacher at Tarsi hostel. What is needed next? A chainsaw to build things with: Mesara Primary – 5kw solar panels and classroom reno-vations, library shelving and sufficient school books for all students to access, continuation of Hostel support - $260 pa keeps a student housed, fed & educated, beds & cupboards for the Teachers houses, renovate girls shower & clothes washing area + boys toilets & showers at Seba, larger motorbike for Pastor Franz Lackner to take sick people to hospital, replacement of worn out ute which is used to take generator, jackhammer & well rings to new well or renovation sites. These projects are almost self-sustaining even as they grow in numbers. The Indonesian Government, absent until 3 years ago, is more involved in helping the Subanese grow their economy. In total $71,858 has been donated by Rotary clubs in Austria, Australia & Indonesia + our District, family’s & individuals, and Bali Camp – Austrian Surf School. A cheque for $2700 from Brighton North was presented by President Russell to continue our involvement with RC Beaumaris and the worthy projects on Sabu. VOT Peter K: thanked the RC Beaumaris team for their update presentation and recalled that they were char-tered in same year as our club – 1985 and like ourselves a small club doing big things.
