Presidents Report
As I write week beginning 2nd May I think of our event happen-
ing on that day the Annual Mayoral Golf Day at Royal Mel-
bourne What a lot of effort and dedication this takes to put on
- I would like to thank the team lead by Jim OBrien More
thanks and acknowledgements next week however just be-
cause the team make it look easy we shouldnt underestimate
the work and skill required I am ball spotting on the day I un-
derstand from Ken and Wolf that I should wear a bike helmet
with spikes to keep the golf balls at bay
Our wonderful speaker Tim Wilson was absolutely enthralling
last week its great to have a great speaker with a strong view
and the ability to make that view clear If (and it seems its re-
ally more a case of when) he is elected he will be a worthy
successor to those previously holding Goldstein Ian McPhee
David Kemp and Andrew Robb and of course a worthy repre-
sentative for the electorate of Vida Goldstein an early feminist
parliamentary candidate
Greg has sourced another great speaker through his contactsits a testament to his wide ranging approach that we have had
so many members at our meetings and so many partners -
thanks Greg
The support we get from our regular meetings is always appar-
ent none more so than when we have significant events in our
lives I received a note of thanks from one of our members
saying that our orchid remembrance of his father would make
him think of his father and of us his fellow Rotarians every
time he looked at it That is what our mutual support and fel-
lowship is all about

Next week is busy the Golf Day and after dinner at Ru-
meah Aleka in Balcombe Road the Board meeting on
Tuesday the Bayside Council youth speaker on Thursday
and the Presidents meeting on Friday at Mulgrave Mal-
colm Sawle is invited to this meeting as next years Presi-
dent he is just about to be launched into one of the busi-
est years of his life Malcolm is really preparing he has
his Forum coming up on the 12th of May I am looking
forward to it Malcolm is already bringing his great
strengths in strategy and planning to the Club and our
ongoing operation How lucky we are in the great
strengths we have in all our members partners and
friends of our Club

His first three jobs were delivering newspapers carrying
timber around building sites and as a waiter at a reception
centre
Tim was twice-elected Student President at University
was recognised by The Australian newspaper as one of
the ten emerging leaders of Australian society and a re-cipient of an Australian Leadership Award
Tim has a Masters of Diplomacy and Trade and a Bache-
lor of Arts from Monash University and has completed
executive education at the Graduate Institute of Interna-
tional Affairs and Development in Geneva and the World
Intellectual Property Organisationrsquos Worldwide Academy
Timrsquos talk concentrated on broad philosophical views he
will carry in to parliament if he is elected into the Federal
parliament
He went to school at Mt Martha Primary and the Peninsu-
la School His father was bankrupted in the 1990
ldquorecession we had to haverdquo and this was a force in shap-
ing his political view of the world
Tim regards himself as a Classical liberal in the Menzies
mold He believes that the individuals must be free to
take care of themselves foremost and then have compas-
sion for others
He is a strong defender of freedom of speech and be-
lieves that Australiarsquos racial vilification laws restrict genu-
ine debate He believes genuine examples of racial har-
assment should be subject to other laws
Tim is living in a long term same sex relationship and is
an advocate of marriage equality
He has worked with Pat Dobson and is a firm believer in a
form of indigenous land rights which would provide the
right incentives to build strong communitiesIn government he said he would stand for honesty not
spin based on a belief that people are not stupid and want
to be responsible for their own future

Tim Wilson is one of Australiarsquos most challenging and
thought-provoking opinion leaders Drawing on strong
philosophical principles he leads debates backed up with
evidence while maintaining a real-world pragma-
tism Passionate Fearless Hersquos not afraid to stand up
and offer an optimistic solutions-focused perspective on
local and international issues that gets people engaging
and talking
In early 2014 Tim was appointed Australiarsquos Human
Rights Commissioner During his term he worked with
government to reform laws to stop terrorism while pre-
serving civil liberties improving economic opportunities
for indigenous Australians and defending marginalised
communities from public harassment while protecting free
speech and religious freedom
In early 2016 Tim resigned as Commissioner to seek Lib-
eral Party preselection for the electorate of Goldstein cov-
ering Bayside Melbourne In March he was endorsed for

His first three jobs were delivering newspapers carrying
timber around building sites and as a waiter at a reception
centre
Tim was twice-elected Student President at University
was recognised by The Australian newspaper as one of
the ten emerging leaders of Australian society and a re-cipient of an Australian Leadership Award
Tim has a Masters of Diplomacy and Trade and a Bache-
lor of Arts from Monash University and has completed
executive education at the Graduate Institute of Interna-
tional Affairs and Development in Geneva and the World
Intellectual Property Organisationrsquos Worldwide Academy
Timrsquos talk concentrated on broad philosophical views he
will carry in to parliament if he is elected into the Federal
parliament
He went to school at Mt Martha Primary and the Peninsu-
la School His father was bankrupted in the 1990
ldquorecession we had to haverdquo and this was a force in shap-
ing his political view of the world
Tim regards himself as a Classical liberal in the Menzies
mold He believes that the individuals must be free to
take care of themselves foremost and then have compas-
sion for others
He is a strong defender of freedom of speech and be-
lieves that Australiarsquos racial vilification laws restrict genu-
ine debate He believes genuine examples of racial har-
assment should be subject to other laws
Tim is living in a long term same sex relationship and is
an advocate of marriage equality
He has worked with Pat Dobson and is a firm believer in a
form of indigenous land rights which would provide the
right incentives to build strong communitiesIn government he said he would stand for honesty not
spin based on a belief that people are not stupid and want
to be responsible for their own future

Tim Wilson is one of Australiarsquos most challenging and
