Oxford City Centre steeped in History offers two very different days out tovisitors; I indulged in a retail experience visiting the Malmaison, Duke ofCambridge and a quick sneak peak around the shops, whilst my colleague Anneembarked on a Cultural experience visiting the Ashmolean Museum, ChristChurch Picture Gallery and The House. So how did we get on?

Paige’s 24 Hours in Oxford

It was a beautiful day, and I couldn’t waitto see what Oxford city centre had instore for me. Walking out onto Oxford’scobbled streets I headed over to the trainstation. City Sightseeing were going to begiving me an open top bus tour, (Ithought I should get a little bit of cultureinto my day!) It was very interesting, seeing the landmark sites, even gettingthe history of the hotel I was to bestaying in, the Malmaison was a prison upuntil 1996 - can you believe it!!

The tour lasted approximately an hour, taking me past the Ashmolean, BodleianLibrary and then onto some of thecolleges. Once finished I decided it wastime to take a stroll around Oxford’shistorical streets. There are so many smallalleyways and roads, with so much to befound, but my eye was drawn into theCovered Market, a quieter area in Oxfordcity centre, filled with smaller individuallyowned shops, perfect for finding uniqueitems and trinkets for visitors wishing totake a little souvenir home.

After all this shopping, I had certainlyworked up an appetite. I headed to a pub

which I had heard a lot about; The RedLion. Recently refurbished, andcelebrating its first birthday, this excellentpub / restaurant had won rave reviews.Browsing the menu I decided to ask forsome advice; the Sunday roast seemed tobe the most popular suggestion, so Iopted for the traditional Beef andYorkshire pudding, certainly an excellentdecision on my behalf, even if I do say somyself!

Feeling rejuvenated, I decided it was timefor a little bit of shopping, the Clarendoncentre being my first stop. Huge storesaplenty, such as Zara, French Connectionwith plenty of coffee shops to refuel you.If I had had all day I could have spent asmall fortune.

Finally it was time to relax, after a longday walking I think I earned myself aquick sample of one of the UK’s bestcocktail bars, The Duke of Cambridge. Astrawberry daiquiri went down verysmoothly. I took the time to reflect onthe day. Oxford, although a busy city, offers a diverse variety of things to doand although I was partaking in a retailexperience, the history of the town is stillimpossible to escape.

Join In Oxford's Paige Walford and Anne Kamphausen as they embark on aquest to find the best the great city of Oxford has to offer in 24 Hours.

Anne’s 24 Hours in Oxford

Waking up in The Randolph, I knew I wasin for a treat today; The AshmoleanMuseum, Christ Church Picture Galleryand The House were just some of thethings lined up for me . After a fantasticnight’s sleep my partner and I headeddown for Breakfast. I opted for the FullEnglish with a traditional mug of tea ,however, my partner went for thecontinental option, Freshly cookedCroissants, cereals, fruits and much more.

Walking out of the doors of Oxfordshire’smost prestigious and only Five Star hotel, opposite us stood the AshmoleanMuseum. If this is your first visit toOxford, then this is definitely a must do.Until April 22nd you can see for the firsttime the Visions of Mughal Indiaexhibition. With an outstanding collectionof leading artists, we could not help butbecome lost in the paintings from themoment we walked in. Each paintingincluded so many small details anddazzling colours, we were transfixed inwhat seemed a new world, causing us tolose track of the time.

Now it was time for lunch. We didn’texactly have to walk far - just to thefourth floor! We were treating ourselvesto a meal at the Ashmolean Dining room. With summer approaching a roof terraceseems the ideal place to sit and enjoy aspot of lunch. With a new menu, newhead chef and fantastically uniqueinterior we were certainly eager to try outthe food. With the butchers cut of theday and the corn fed chicken breastsmothered in Parmasan sauce, we werecertainly spoiled (read review for moreinformation).

It wasn’t long until we were ready tomove onto our next sightseeingdestination, Christ Church Picture Gallery, providing us with some of the mostimportant private collections of oldmaster painting and drawings in GreatBritain. The building itself is quite hard tofind, as it is somewhat hidden withinChrist Church. Walking through thegallery, you can’t help but be impressedby the paintings and some quite unusualAnnibale Carracci’s, The Butcher Shopbeing one of those. Overall my visit tothe gallery was an exceptionalexperience, which I would highlyrecommend to locals and tourists alike.

Still full from our fantastic lunch wedecided just to go sit and relax in TheHouse found on Blue Boar Street. Set inthe heart of Oxfordshire but yet seemingmiles from anything, this was the perfectplace to look back on our day’s activities.I would definitely recommend a dayvisiting all the sites, you can even take atrip on City Sightseeing and they willdrop you off at each of these places.

Which one of these days out do youprefer?

Are you looking for the best tour guide in Oxfordshire? Have you ever wanted to

learn about this city and its famous University? Well now’s your chance, with

Oxford’s City Sightseeing tour bus!

This is the perfect choice for tourists looking to explore this beautiful city, to Oxonians,

wishing to learn about the City that they live in. You will find all you need to know on

this bus tour with a little added humour to boot!

The adventure started at Oxford railway station, where we collected our tickets and

then we were directed to the relevant stop. We were about to embark on City

Sightseeing’s open-top bus tour, and rain or shine, you’re always in for a treat, with

amazing views and exquisite architecture; what more could a person want? There are

two types of buses, one with a live guide and one that has a taped commentary with

a wide variety of languages.

Including 19 stops such as Christ Church, Sheldonian Theatre and Queen’s College, this

bus tour is really the best way to see “The City of Dreaming Spires” from taking a sneak

peek into the colleges with their immaculate lawns and century’s old charm, to learning

the history of the oldest pubs. By the way, did you know Harry Potter was filmed in

Oxford? And have you wondered why there is an Alice in Wonderland shop located in

St Aldates? Now I know that the original sweet shop found there was Lewis Carroll’s

inspiration for the old sheep shop in Alice Through the Looking-Glass, it would be a

travesty for it to move! You will discover this during your journey. I have to admit it’s

quite interesting to know how the colleges and faculties work and realize that a lot of

authors, prime ministers and world famous individuals have studied at Oxford.

You can hop on and off the bus all day and for this reason I recommend you to take

the 48hrs valid ticket so the first day you can see and listen all about the most

important venues and then you can visit them. But, with this ticket you are offered a

wide variety of discounts in both shops and restaurants.

So in my opinion this really is an ideal day out, from taking a trip around the museums,

to eating in Oxford’s best restaurants, with a discount!!. So what are you waiting for?

When you think of Oxfordshire hotels what jumps into your head? My thoughtswould turn immediately to The Randolph Hotel. This not only represents theperfect base, Plumb in the middle of Oxford city centre, but it has the undeniableclass, sophistication and style which underlines its five star status; unique inOxfordshire. Tonight I was going to see what this world famous hotel really hadto offer.

It’s not every day you get the opportunity to review a stunning five star hotel, and thiswas an experience I certainly will never forget. Walking in an impeccably dressedconcierge opened the door to greet me, I must admit now this has never happened tome before, they were definitely off to a good start. Walking in I couldn’t help but takea couple of minutes to admire the entrance directly in front of me was a stair case fitfor a princess, it was like something you see in films.

I was sold before I opened the doors to the suite, and, to be honest with you, if I hadwalked in to a tiny room with a single bed, my enthusiasm and excitement wouldn’thave waned. The reality was that I was most definitely in a breath takingly beautifulroom something I could only have wished for.

If I told you there was a library in the suite, you probably wouldn’t believe me, but if Itell you it had two ‘deluxe’ lavatories, then that gives you an idea of the size of this‘chamber’. The King sized bed looked good enough to stay in for a whole month, sobeing the child I am decided to flop onto it and WOW, I melted into the mattress, ifonly this was my real bed. I could have stayed in this room for hours admiring thedecoration, but now it was time for dinner.

The food was certainly in keeping with the quality which I had became accustomed toso far. I was greeted in the dining room by a charming, friendly waitress, who escortedme to my table for the evening. My waiter handed me the menu, highlighting thespecials of the day. Whilst I mulled over my choice of meal, I was offered a bottle ofwine. Now me being a picky wine drinker I needed a little bit of advice, this wascertainly not a problem for this young gentleman. He recommended the mostfantastically chilled sweet wine.

It didn’t take me long to work out what to have for my meal of choice. I went with thespecial of the day, pork which was carved in front of me; this was complimented witha rosemary sauce and then on the side to make the perfect combination was butternutsquash. There was nothing that I could possibly fault about this meal.

So do you want to live the life of Royalty for one day, visit The Macdonald RandolphHotel, whichever room you are in you are bound to feel like a star!!

Oxford’s Malmaison Hotel is a hotel with bags of character and a colourfulhistory. For those unfamiliar with its ‘form’, this stunning, award winningboutique hotel is actually a former prison. Following the closure of the prison in1996, the site provided the backdrop for a number of film and TV series, includingPorridge!

I had been relishing my chance to see what one of the most talked about hotels inOxfordshire was really like. From what I had heard this was possibly Oxfordshire’scoolest hotel.

I checked in around 5.00pm and was shown to my room, following a hotelfamiliarization with the receptionist.

Walking through into the newer part of the hotel, I couldn’t help but imagine what myroom was going to be like. Would I be confined to a cell or one of the newer refurbishedrooms? My room was fantastically modern, with a flat screen television opposite thebed, a mini bar in the wardrobe and a shower I could stand in for days, it was like beingin heaven, certainly not a prison!

Now it was time for dinner. The Brasserie, located in the basement of the hotel, boastsa sumptuous menu with only the best local ingredients being used. After muchdrooling, I made my choice, and I can truly say that I was not disappointed. I eventreated myself to a dessert crème brulée. The food was simply delicious, and the serviceexceptional.

My stay at Malmaison was, frankly, my idea of heaven, but it’s not just the normalrooms which offer a luxurious interior. Why not try out one of the original prison cells, built within the footprint of three cells, rather than just one and the rooms even havethe cell doors in place. You’re basically sleeping in the same space previously occupiedby nine inmates!!!

It will be hard to beat Malmaison. With a luxuriously modern interior and a fantastichistory, just make sure you don’t find yourself spending the night in a padded cell, orrunning into one of the prison’s former residents, rumoured to still inhabit the hotel.

With summer approaching, a rooftop terrace and a new Head Chef at theAshmolean Dining Room there seems to be no better place in Oxford to havelunch or afternoon tea.

We went to the restaurant for lunch on a Saturday and having never been there before,we were delighted to find out about the location on the fourth floor of the AshmoleanMuseum with its large glass windows – it meant we were warm indoors, but could stillenjoy the sunshine of this nice day.

The Dining Room is full of light and a very modern room. It was busy with people ofall ages, tables with only two guest, and bigger tables that hosted family lunches –altogether a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere.

The menu is great and we took quite a while to decide what we wanted to eat, as sadly,we could not eat all of what’s on the menu. Alun Roberts, the new Head Chef has madehis introduction into the restaurant with this fantastic new menu, which continueswith the theme of hearty British cooking with a European twist.

In the end, we decided for Piperade, which is a Basque dish with peppers, tomatoes, andonions, with garlic bread and soft shell crab with sweet chilli mayonnaise as out starters. Both dishes looked and tasted great!

Even better were our main courses – we went for the butcher’s cut of the day, whichwas roast pork belly and risotto and the corn fed chicken breast with poppy seeds inparmesan cream sauce. Both were very nicely presented and tasted fantastic. We bothfinished it all and struggled when it came to a decision about desert. When we couldn’tmake up our minds, the friendly and attentive waiter suggested we order one and hewill bring two spoons, so we shared the pressed dark chocolate cake with lavendercream, accompanied by tea and cappuccino.

We really enjoyed our visit at the Dining Room and were not only full of great tastingfood, but also completely relaxed and ready for a shopping afternoon.

Located right in the city centre, a visit at the Ashmolean Dining Room perfectly fits inwith any plans you might have. Try the lunch or afternoon tea, book the private diningroom for your event (up to 18 people), or visit the Dining Room for one of their eventslisted on the website.

Can you believe it’s already one year since George Street’s Red Lion transformeditself into a fine dining pub? The Red Lion changed into a premium diningexperience, giving the pub a stylish, modern feel whilst promising to keep itstraditional roots alive, so has this story came true? The In Oxford team joined TheRed Lion in celebrating their 1st Birthday, whilst also taking a sneak peak at theirnew menu.

Balloons, smiles and photos greeted us as we walked through the door. Escortedimmediately to our table where we were fortunate enough to be sat up the top, givingus a clear view of the whole pub. Whilst overlooking all before us it was clear to see howproud each member of staff really was, offering a helping hand and a smile to all of thecustomers in attendance.

Once seated, our charming and witty waiter, Robin, came over to serve us, assuring usour food wouldn’t be long. Robin took our drinks order and, seeing as it was one of theteam’s Birthday, we all went for something naughty! Two of us ordered Aspalls ciderand the other two stuck to what they know best, British beer! We were then treatedto complimentary champagne, served with a slice of Strawberry. Yum!

Whilst sitting back and enjoying the atmosphere, Tom, the new manager, introducedhimself, expressing the enthusiasm he has towards this newly reformed pub. With theintroduction of their new menu, bringing a new lease of life to the spring months, Tommust have been delighted that The Red Lion was bursting at the seams.

It wasn’t long before our food was served. A sharing platter to start with a sample ofall their new and improved starters, ranging from Smoked Salmon lightly covered in acitrus ponzo dressing, served with a fennel and herb salad, Moroccan lamb koftas servedwith Tzatziki and for those olive lovers out there, Rustic Bread served with Olives andextra virgin olive oil. What a way to start - compliments to the chef!

Whilst waiting for our main course we decided to take a closer look at the drinks menut choose some wine. There are all the usual grape wine favourites, from crisp whitePinots and grassy Sauvignons, to trendy pinks and smooth, juicy reds such as Rioja andMerlot by the bottle or glass. There is also a wide selection of cask ales, and superchilled draft and bottled beers, ensuring The Red Lion appeals to everyone’s palate.

Now it was time for our main course sharer, which included chicken served with apeanut sauce (yummy!), traditional mini fish and chips served with minted mushy peasand then one of my personal favourites, pork belly and then last, but certainly not least,a classic English burger, all of which seemed to vanish in seconds. We did try our bestto savour each mouthful, but It was just too good to leave it on the plate for too long! Now, you would think that, after all of this food, our stomachs wouldn’t take muchmore but, no, we opted for desserts, selecting the warm brownie served with Vanilla icecream and then the apple and blackcurrant crumble, smothered in vanilla custard.

So take a visit to The Red Lion today, with its fantastic selection of food and drink, andwhy not, if it’s a sunny day, go and sit in the beer garden watching the world go by.

So one final Happy Birthday to the Red Lion …….. let’s hope this year is as good as thelast!

Looking for a stylish cocktail bar in the centre of Oxford? Well look no further –

you simply must visit The House on Blue Boar Street. This has to be the perfect

venue for meeting friends after work, and if you’re fortunate enough to finish

work on time, then why not take advantage of the happy hour (is that a hint Paige

– Ed?)

The House is spread over two floors, with an outdoor terrace for those balmy summer

evenings. The House offers a whole lot more than luxurious cocktails and modern

interior, but if you head upstairs you’ll find a games room, with a pool table, board

games, books to read and a cosy seating area - this games room even has its own bar.

This room is available to hire, holding up to 70 people and The House can cater for you

here by prior arrangement.

The House offers a feeling of quality, which, unlike some bars, most certainly isn’t lost

through its clientele who dress in keeping with their refined surroundings. Like its sister

bar The Duke, The House is certainly a place to be seen in. The atmosphere has been

created by successfully blending conventional style with modern-day sophistication.

The relaxed but stylish cocktail bar has signature chesterfield sofas, big armchairs and

modern lighting, perfectly complemented by a cocktail menu which includes classics

such as the Cosmopolitan and Mojito to new favourites created by the House

bartenders, such as the delicious Lemon and Thyme sour or apple and spiced rum

Gecko. I had an out of this world cocktail which was tailored to my taste, so don’t be

scared to test the skill of the Bar tenders.

The House may be known for its magnificent cocktails, but they do recognize that we

need to eat occasionally! Although it’s just nibbles on offer, including Pitta Bread and

Humus to spiced nuts, it’s ideal to keep you ticking over.

I went to The House on a weeknight but there was still a great atmosphere with the

usual stylish crowd in. So if you’re looking for a night for an intimate liaison or a

meeting with friends, during the week or at weekends, then take a walk down Blue

Boar Street, and enjoy The House.

Do not forget to visit Christ Church Picture Gallery when you are in Oxford. It isone of the most important private collections of old master paintings anddrawings in Great Britain.

This outstanding collection includes works dating from 1300 to 1750. They span fromthe golden splendour and serenity of the early Italian panels to the drama of SirAnthony van Dyck’s historical paintings and the theatrical realism of Annibale Carracci’severyday life. Since 1968 the collection has been housed in an award-winning buildingby the architects Powell and Moya; many believe it to be one of the most excitingspaces of modern architecture in Oxford.

The building and its collection are somewhat hidden within Christ Church and like inAlice in Wonderland (in whose garden the gallery is situated) only reveal themselvesfrom within. To enter the gallery is almost like going through the ‘rabbit hole’; one hasto pass through a corridor under a Georgian building just to resurface into a differentworld – one of light, art and tranquillity.

The international fame of the gallery is also due to its exceptional collection of almost2000 old master drawings (including such celebrated artists as Leonardo, Michelangelo,Raphael and Rubens). However, due to conservational reasons, only a selection of thedrawings can be on display at any one time. The drawings exhibitions are changed everyfew months; please refer to our website for information on our current and forthcomingshows.

When we visited the gallery in late February, the current collection ‘You are what youwear’ had just started and we were impressed by this interesting collection of drawingsshowing dress as a way to depict identity.

The ideas outlined in the drawings in this exhibition are supplemented by the paintingsin the Picture Gallery. Costume and its depiction can be studied further in the finishedpaintings - be it the aristocratic splendour in the Portrait of Beatrice’Este, or the morebourgeois outfit in Frans Hals Portrait of a Woman.

The old master paintings are equally impressive and enjoyable. Walking through thedifferent rooms and admiring the works of art was such an inspiring experience and thepeaceful atmosphere of the gallery clearly supports this.

Some of the paintings are quite unusual, for example Annibale Carracci’s The Butcher’sShop. This painting has a historical significance: this was the first time that an artisttreated a modest genre-subject, in this case the interior of a Butcher’s Shop, on amonumental scale.

Overall, our visit at the gallery was an exceptional experience and can only be highlyrecommended to locals and tourists alike.

Sister bar to The House, The Duke of Cambridge offers, arguably, some ofOxfordshire’s best cocktails. Well placed on Jericho’s Little Clarendon Street, TheDuke has been rated as one of the top 5 cocktails bars in the UK by The Guardian, and continues to astonish both visitors and Oxonians alike with its greatatmosphere, décor and, of course, first class cocktails.

Entering the bar you can’t help but catch the sparkle from the chandeliers and reflectionfrom the dark walnut floor. Oodles of hard work has gone in to making The Dukepolished and welcoming. No corners have been cut – The Duke is head and shouldersabove your average bar. This is a place to impress, to be seen in and to enjoy yourself. If you want live sport blaring out of 200ft plasma screens, then The Duke is not foryou.

The outstanding quality of the interior clearly matches the quality of the cocktails, which are worth every penny. Only generous measures of premium spirits and thefreshest ingredients are used, but guys you certainly won’t be finding alcho-pops or RedBull at The Duke.

The diverse drinks menu offers an assortment of drinks, all of which set high standards. But don’t think for a second they have forgotten to provide nibbles, filling the gap aftera couple of cocktails; Chilli Crackers, Corn Chips with Salsa are all on offer, so why notdig in whilst your there?

With it coming up to Summer I would definitely say that The Duke of Cambridge is theideal place to go. Offering Strawberry Daiquiri (a personal favourite of mine I mightadd!) or a Mojito, both of which are The Duke’s best sellers, and I cannot think of amore refreshing cocktail to be sipping on during a sizzling hot day this summer. Rainor shine, The Duke is a great retreat – fabulous after a day’s shopping and an afternoonwhich subconsciously slips into evening.

So how about taking a walk down this evening and taking advantage of their happyhour? From Sunday to Thursday, visit from 5.00pm until 9.00pm, and then on Fridaysand Saturdays visit from 5.00pm until 7.30pm. The bar stays open until 1.00am atweekends and 12pm during the week.

So if you’re after a quiet drink, a short walk from the centre of town, and you’ve gotstyle at the top of your list, then The Duke is for you. It’s quite simply the best.

There has been a theatre on the corner of George Street for almost 170 years. Thefirst theatre built in 1836 was known commonly as the ‘Vic’, and later as the‘Theatre Royale’ after the company that played there. Forbidden to perform playsduring the University terms, the lessee of the theatre resorted to presenting‘concerts’ or music hall entertainment and by 1880 the theatre had become quiterun down.

At the instigation of members of both town and gown a company was formed to raisemoney for a theatre to be used by University and town players as well as byprofessionals. In February 1886 the Oxford University Dramatic Society opened thesecond New Theatre with ‘Twelfth Night’. Designed by H.G.W. Drinkwater and with a1000-seat capacity the second New Theatre was damaged by fire in 1892 and alteredin 1908, when the seating capacity was increased to 1200.

In 1908 the Dorrill family took over the New Theatre and ran the venue for the nextsixty-four years. The third New Theatre opened in February 1934 and with a wonderfulrevolving stage (mechanism extant) and increased capacity of 2000 (1,710 seated)attracted all the great dramatic actors, popular and operatic singers and musicians,music-hall entertainers and matinee idols of the age to Oxford.

In latter days musicals and play productions were supplemented by pop and rockconcerts. In 1972 the Dorrills were bought out by the provincial theatre chain Howardand Wyndham, and in 1977 Apollo Leisure took over the lease of the theatre renamingit ‘The Apollo’. Apollo Leisure were bought out by SFX in 1999, followed by ClearChannel Entertainment in 2001. Following a refurbishment in 2003 the theatre revertedback to the name New Theatre, with Clear Channel Entertainment's theatre divisionbecoming Live Nation two years later.

The theatre is now owned by The Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG) who are the biggesttheatre owners in the country, owning 40 theatres across the UK.

Audiences at the theatre can once again see leading opera and ballet companies, fromWelsh National Opera to the English National Ballet, contemporary dance, hit musicalslike Chicago and Guys and Dolls, and of course sell-out pop concerts. In 2011, headlineshows included South Pacific, Will Young, Sister Act, English National Ballet, SarahMillican, Chinese state Circus, Spaghetti Western Orchestra, Bob The Builder.

Make sure you include a visit to The New Theatre when you next come to Oxford.

Jam packed full of British "olde world" character, this market is tucked away justoff of the high street on Cornmarket Street, in Oxford city centre. Once home tosmall market stalls in 1774, now in 2012 the Covered Market is one ofOxfordshire’s biggest/finest attractions.

The Covered Market provides both Oxfordshire residents and visitors with an equaledshopping experience. Surprising people with their exclusive shops and restaurants thisindoor shopping centre is fast becoming one of the most sought out destinations fora refreshingly relaxed retail experience. For tourists wishing to take an Oxfordshiretrinket home with them, then take a vist as they offer small arts and crafts outletsideal for a unique gift to take home

For Oxfordshire residents you can get just about anything in here: fresh fruit andvegetables (even organic products are available), flowers & meat if you'd like analternative to big-chain supermarkets. Or perhaps a spot of lunch? You can get delicioussandwiches, meals or treats from the abundance of cafes! (Including sugary goodnessfrom Oxford's famous Ben's Cookies, (arguably the best cookies ever!!) For all youcookie lovers out there, you may be interested to know that the covered market ishome to the original Bens Cookies Shop.

If you're not after food but instead looking for a bit of retail therapy, there are a bunchof great little shops which are also a nice alternative to the madness of the big shopson the high street. I found a lovely little shop called the Hat box where you can find avariety of Beautiful hats to keep you warm in the winter, and to keep the sun off yourface in the summer (when the sun finally comes out!) you certainly couldn’t doubt thequality of the products or the service that you receive when entering the shop.

After my afternoon in the covered Market I thought I would have a cup of Tea in BrownsCafé, if your after great service and a traditional English breakfast then this really is theplace to go. The owner was a lovely guy, making conversation with everyone, howevernot in an intrusive way, everyone in their certainly had a smile on their face. Whilstrelaxing I watched what was going on outside and I noticed that even thought you stillget a nice flow of people going through, but you you cannot help but still feel that thisis one of the most tranquil and enjoyable places, especially in comparison to the busynoise found on the high street.

Now finally are there any cake lovers out there? Well if so I have found the perfectplace for you. The Cake Shop found in the centre of the Market, welcomes you in towatch the cakes being made. With Glass windows surrounding the shop, you can seethe artists at work, I don’t think I saw one person walk past and not stop and admirethe pure quality, I mean could you resist really?

So, are you after something a little different, something which you wouldn’t find onOxfords high Streets? Well how about taking a trip down to the Covered Market, youcertainly won’t regret it, I didn’t!!!

If you are in Oxford, you should definitely try and visit the Visions of MughalIndia exhibition at the Ashmolean Museum. Visions of Mughal India presents forthe first time in its entirety the outstanding collection if Indian paintings of oneof the leading artists of our time, Howard Hodgkin.

The collection is a personal one, formed by an artist’s eye and comprises of over 115paintings from the Mughal period (c. 1550-1850). The paintings include the refinednaturalistic works of the imperial Mughal court, the poetic and subtly colouredpaintings of the Deccani Sutlanates and the boldly drawn and vibrantly coloured stylesof the Raiput kingdoms of Rajasthan and the Punjab Hills.

The themes include illustrations of epics, royal portraits, scenes of court life and hunting. There are also studies of birds and flowers and especially outstanding are the paintingsand drawings of elephants.

We were fascinated by the paintings from the moment we walked into the room. Eachpainting includes so many small details and the colours are just beautiful. Thedescriptions of the pictures are very informative. However, even after reading these, ifyou have a closer look, you will discover even more details in each picture. We onlyrealised when we were finished with our tour that it was already late afternoon – wehad spent hours looking at the paintings without noticing the time at all!

The exhibition continues until 22nd April, so do make sure you visit the Ashmoleanduring this time! And, if you are as inspired as we were by Visions of Mughal India, don’tforget to have a look around the gift shop for the catalogue, gifts, books, stationery, accessories and cards.

A haven of creativity and adventure set in the heart of the Cotswold landscape, The

Bushcraft Company has to be the most exciting venue for kids Oxfordshire has to offer.

As well as hosting over 250 schools each year for leaver’s trips, team-building events and

weekend excursions, The Bushcraft Company runs activity camps for kids aged 7-15 throughout

the school holidays, from its headquarters at Cornbury Park.

With a dizzying array of activities on offer, from lighting fires and cooking their own supper in

underground ovens, to climbing trees and navigating across the ancient forest to rescue casualties

from a simulated plane crash, this is the kind of adventure every kid should be involved in.

Forget hard hats, long queues, and concrete dormitories, The Bushcraft Company has really raised

the bar on kids’ activity camps, with 3,000 acres of ancient woodland to explore, a camp

scattered with roaring fires and Scandinavian teepees to experience, and a host of activities that

will spark even the most cynical of childish imaginations.

The Bushcraft Company’s activity camps are a great choice for parents looking for something

exciting for their kids to do during the holidays. This April you can choose from three Easter

Camps, and you can also book places on their Summer Camps now, which are running for July

23rd to the end of August and range from 3 day to 5 days.

The 24 hour Family Camp is also back by popular demand this spring, so head on down to The

Bushcraft Company for a unique camping experience which is as cosy as it is exciting. Kids and

parents alike can get stuck into all sorts of activities and games – one of the parents can stay at

home with the youngest and the others can hunker down for a delicious meal around the fire

and a good night’s sleep in one of the beautiful bell tents.
