Nos referimos al primer eventodel PGA TOUR fuera de los Esta-dos Unidos y Canadá desde sucreación en 1916. Este evento sinduda alguna es una gran plata-forma para la promoción denuestro país, impulsando dichadisciplina en México y colocandoa la Riviera Maya como el destinoelite del Golf en Latinoamérica,ya que el tour de la PGA es unode los cuatro torneos más impor-tantes del mundo y se catalogacomo el más promovido y tele-visado del mundo.

the past three months, we areglad to inform you that duringthis month, the Riviera Maya willhost an historic golf event inLatin America.
We are talking about the firstPGA TOUR outside the UnitedStates and Canada since thefounding of the Association in1916. This event is without ques-tion a great platform to launchthis sport in Mexico, promote ourgreat country and to set theRiviera Maya as the elite golf des-tination of Latin America. ThePGA TOUR event is one of themost important in the golf worldand is the promoted and broad-cast worldwide.
This tournament will take placefrom the 19th to the 25th ofJanuary at El Camaleón Golfcourse located in Mayakoba,which is north of Playa delCarmen. With 144 of the bestgolfers in the world confirmed,we suggest that you do not missthis event. Committed to parti-cipate is Mark Calcavecchia, win-ner of the British OpenChampionship in 1989, winnerof 12 PGA TOUR titles since1986, winner of the CanadianBell Open in 2005 and has alsobeen a member of four RyderCup teams and two President
Cup teams. Another participantis Jeff Sluman who won the PGAchampionship in 1988, the firstof six PGA TOUR titles in hiscareer. Also participitating isSteve Elkington, PGA Champion-ship winner. The circuit that will take place in theRiviera Maya belongs to the “2007PGA TOUR FedExCup” which willbe the eighth event and will distri-bute 3.5 million dollars in prizesusing the stroke play method.

UNA HERENCIA COMÚN EN UN TIEMPO NUEVO
a cultura maya tuvo diver-sas épocas de gran esplen-dor, especialmente en el
periodo clásico (a partir del año250 D.C.), en el cual surgen lasgrandes ciudades-estado, talescomo Cobá, Tikal, Palenque yUxmal. Diversos factores origi-naron la desaparición gradual deestos grandes centros, especial-mente en el altiplano y en elsureste mexicano. En el periodopost-clásico tardío (año 1250D.C.), el intercambio comercialmarítimo y el desarrollo de sitioscosteros como resguardo a lanavegación, produjeron un fenó-meno de repoblamiento en lacosta oriental de Quintana Roo.
Procedentes de Tabasco, en laregión de Xicalango, los mayaschontales o putunes extendieronsu influencia hacia toda la costade la península de Yucatán,estableciendo diversas rutas co-merciales marítimas, las cuales
tenían influencia en diversasprácticas y actividades, talescomo los nacimientos, la agricul-tura y la pesca, la navegación, loscasamientos, la muerte, etc. Noes de extrañar entonces quediversos dioses fueran objeto deveneración. El más importantecaso se dio en la costa oriental deQuintana Roo y fue el de la vene-ración a la diosa principal de losmayas: Ix Chel, cuyo nombrepuede traducirse como “la de tezblanca”. Esta designación es unaclara alusión a una de sus princi-pales advocaciones, ya que era ladiosa de la luna.
Numerosos grupos de peregrinosviajaban de todas partes de lapenínsula de Yucatán y se con-gregaban en diversos puntos de
la costa, principalmente de Polé(hoy Xcaret), para efectuar unatravesía marítima hacia el princi-pal lugar de veneración de IxChel: la isla de Cozumel. Ahítenía lugar un conjunto de cere-monias y rituales de veneración ala diosa. Como ocurre en la ma-yoría de los dioses en Mesoa-mérica, las divinidades tenían unafunción dual, por lo cual podíanfavorecer grandemente a loshombres, pero también podíantraerles desgracias. Lo mismosucedía con Ix Chel, ya queademás de ser diosa de la tierra,

diosa Ix Chel. Esta travesía tieneun carácter sagrado, ya que re-presenta un ritual espiritual derelación con la naturaleza (el mar)y el cosmos. La Travesía Sagrada,a celebrarse el 1° de junio de esteaño, será nuevamente una tradi-ción viva que congregará a nu-merosos habitantes de Cozumely de Solidaridad, principalmentePlaya del Carmen. Un lugar y unaherencia común en un tiemponuevo. Los antiguos mayas sa-bían que los ciclos de la vida serepiten, y con ellos, nuestras másantiguas tradiciones.
llegaron incluso hasta Belice yHonduras. La habilidad de estosnavegantes fue tal, que el emi-nente mayista Eric S. Thompsonlos llamó “Los fenicios del nuevomundo”. El intercambio de pro-ductos fue abundante y variado:sal, miel, jade, ámbar, obsidiana,cacao, metates de basalto,turquesa, algodón, cera, achiote,pedernal, productos agrícolas,pescado seco, carne, huevos detortuga, espinas de mantarraya,caracoles, conchas, maíz, copal,cerámica plomiza, cobre, oro,tumbaga, piedra verde, condi-mentos y esclavos.
Como suele suceder en cualquierlugar en donde se da el comercioabundante, al mismo tiempoocurrieron fenómenos de migra-ción, peregrinaje y nuevos asen-tamientos humanos, en los cua-les confluyeron diversos artistas yconstructores. También se propi-ció la aparición de nuevas formasde cerámica, arquitectura y pin-turas murales.
Sin embargo, el elemento reli-gioso no podía estar ausente,toda vez que la vida social de losmayas estaba regida pornumerosos dioses, los cuales
de la fecundidad y los nacimien-tos, del tejido y de la pesca, tam-bién era diosa de las aguas mari-nas y de la muerte (en su advo-cación de Ix Chebel Yax).
La representación más conocidade la diosa se refiere a esta últimaadvocación, y se encuentra en elCódice Dresde, el cual muestra auna anciana de senos colgantes ylargas uñas, con un tocado deserpientes en la cabeza, la cualsostiene un cántaro invertido delcual sale un torrente destructorde agua.*
Aquellos peregrinos que seembarcaban a Cozumel y lo-graban realizar la travesía,tenían la oportunidad de escu-char a la diosa por boca de unsacerdote, ya que Ix Chel eratambién la diosa de la adivina-ción. El mensaje recibido erafundamental para regular nu-merosos aspectos de la vidacotidiana de los mayas.
Y ahora, después de muchos si-glos, los orgullosos habitantes deQuintana Roo revivirán esta an-cestral tradición: la travesía deXcaret a Cozumel para visitar a la
