PRESIDENTS REPORT

2020, what has this year in store for us all. Keep an eye on your monthly BuzzerBox to

keep abreast of the goings on of your club.

On behalf of Maxine and myself I would like to wish you all a HAPPY NEW YEAR. We

hope you have all had a relaxing break and are ready for another busy year of Model ‘T’

Fording. To finish off 2019 we had a great group of members join to celebrate Christmas

in the Clubrooms. We also had the pleasurable tones of Little Tony to help us sing and

dance the night away. I think that, those who attended, will all agree that it was another

successful evening of Christmas cheer.

Your committee is again working hard this year to organise a variety of activities for us

all to enjoy and look forward to. Please support your club and the run organizers by

attending at least one of the activities throughout the year, you won’t regret it.

On the 6th February 1964 this great club was formed. Please come along to the Febru-

ary general meeting and enjoy a birthday supper to celebrate our 56th birthday.

To start the club year off the following events have been organised for you to enjoy, we

have the mid-week run on Thursday the 13th of February at 10.30am, we have been in-

vited by the Vintage Sports Car Club to join with them and tour the ABC building in Col-

lingswood. Be sure to book as this is essential for security protocol at the ABC.

Also, an invitation has been extended to our club again to join the Ford Model A Club on

Sunday February 16th for breakfast at 07.30am, a great morning to mix with other car

collectors and swap stories about your recent projects and how various problems were

solved. Please make an effort to attend, it is always a great get together while enjoying a

tasty breakfast.

This year’s Annual Run to Clare is well on the way to being organised, please make sure

you book your accommodation asap so as not to be disappointed.

Hope to see you at the February General Meeting and Birthday Supper

Trevor Martin

Our 1914 Model ‘T’.

Mostly built By Vern, with lots of help from ME..

1971: Vern had assembled a running chassis.

1977: A single seater tray top vehicle had been made. Again, much of the parts were made by Vern, i.e. doors, mudguards, radiator, windscreen etc. it was used in a Willunga Almond Blossom Parade as the Keystone Cops, the guys dressed as Keystone Cops. I of Course had to alter old suits etc fort heir uniforms.

1988: First Bay to Birdwood in the tray top vehicle.

1990: To Birdwood again in the tray top.

1991: A rear section and seat were found at Myponga, brought home and work began on this addition to the back of the ‘T’, instead of being a tray top was turned into a tourer.

1992: The seating was needing upholstery. lam a dressmaker. My sewing machine was not industri-al. I was required to make the upholstery on my machine, no idea how it is made and very little time before Bay to Birdwood. We both worked in a family electrical business with only nights and weekends for this work. I made the upholstery to my design and to the best of my ability on my sewing machine. The upholstery is still in the ‘T’ to this day.

1997: HE! Wants a Hood! Again, I am the seam-stress, it’s my job. Of course, last minutes to taking part in the Bay to Birdwood. The only fabric we had was old rubber backed curtain fabric, again trial and error and read-ing the books on a hood, I managed to make something that was reasonable. It kept off the sun, not so much the rain.

The ‘T’ now has a rainproof hood and side curtains, so we are weatherproof.

After all that I bought a new sewing machine.

“Who are we waiting for?”

“Mik, he said to me he was coming. Perhaps he has gone direct.”

“Come on the Buzzer Box said we were meeting at the bakery. It’s not likely Mik would be passing on an opportunity to come and meet in a bakery.”

That was the conversation that took place in the Strathalbyn Corner Bak-ery at 9.30am on Sunday the nineteenth of January 2020. Another new year and members and their friends had gathered, as instructed for the traditional run to Milang to participate in the Yesterdays Power Rally. We had consumed our coffees and so we decided to continue our journey to the football oval certain that Mik and Brian would turn up eventually. It’s a short run from Strath to Milang. Most of us paid to get in except for the lucky two, whose magnificent Sunbeam Talbot so mesmerized the at-tendants, that they were waved on without the extraction of the pay-ment.

It was not long and others began to arrive. The T Truck came laden with a shelter and the wonderful goodies that have become a regular treat for this run. (I’ll have to take up my daily drink of whisky again.) Mik rang trying to work out where we were. He was expecting to meet at 10 as we have done in the past. They caught up with us not long after. Greetings and introductions were completed and it was time to have a look around.

Trucks, fire appliances and tractors from the twenties to the sixties were displayed around the oval. Stalls displaying antique tools and power memorabilia dotted the edge of the oval. One display from the SA Police Historical Society was there. We promised that we would be at the The-barton museum for our March run on the 22nd. (That’s right the run will be on the fourth Sunday rather than the third in March.)

There were plenty of food and drink stalls as well as the football clubrooms where delicious food from the Milang bakery. Those in the know got hold of a scrumptious pasty (with crisp flaky pastry and a gourmet combination of freshly cooked vegetable and lamb) early, as they invariably run out by lunchtime.

Of course, one of the most sought-after and mouthwatering specialties each year is Strawberries and Ice Cream (There is no truth in the rumor that the MTFCA is just an excuse for wandering around the state and finding delectable food and drinks.)

Behind the clubrooms enthusiasts are busy working out which tractor can pull the greatest weight. The roar of engines, the smell of diesel and the smoke from the exhausts entrances the spectators seated on hay bales placed out for their viewing comfort. The rain that was threatening from early morning stayed away and some took advantage of a free bus ride to the dock at Lake Alexandrina to have a look at, or take a cruise on, another example of Yesterdays Power, the paddle steamer Oscar W. All around the oval and the approaches were steam and fueled stationary engines of various shapes and sizes, from miniature to very large, puffing away and pumping water and driving implements. A fly over of a tiger moth biplane was organized and had young and old craning their necks as it buzzed down low over the event.

There was the opportunity over lunch to meet up with other enthusiasts who come to this wonderful event each year. The pasties were no longer available but the pie was good. In any case the main attraction for me was a heaped bowl of sweet strawberries and lovely country ice cream. We sat for a while and solved most of the problems of the world. I left a little early to catch up with Sue at a BBQ so I missed out on the presentations. Howev-er, I found out later that David Carver won the prize for best Veteran with his 1912 Model T Roadster, which was only to be expected as David had gone to a lot of trouble and it turned out immaculate.

Cheers Paul Van Ruth.

“CHRISTMAS SUPPER IN THE CLUB”

By Judy Inkster

What a magnificent celebration for the thirty-five members who attended the Club’s

Christmas Supper on Saturday the 30th of November.

The Invitation suggested that Supper would be provided and that we should “bring along

our singing voice”. This sounded like a great idea to get into the spirit of the Festive Sea-

son, as no doubt we would be celebrating with

some Christmas Carols and fine food.

AND Celebrate we did!! From the moment we

entered the Club Rooms with the sound of

“Tony’s” party music, the welcoming members

at the door, the sight of the extensive decorations

and the tables already set with selections of sa-

voury snacks, we were overjoyed by the atmos-

phere and the Spirit of Christmas definitely de-

scending upon us.

Along with our singing voices, luckily we also brought our “dancing feet”!!! Good plan-

ning by the organisers provided adequate space as a dance floor and Tony played through

the evening with a wonderful repertoire of music suited to all tastes for singing and danc-

ing. From Ballroom, to Rock’nroll, the Madison, and various other forms of “fun danc-

ing”, there was no shortage of entertainment for ‘Singing Voices and Dancing Feet”.

To add to our pleasure and enjoyment of course, the food service continued at regular

intervals with sumptuous platters of Prawns and Chicken and finishing with a Dessert of

delicious Christmas treats including Mince Pies, mini Crème-puffs, White Christmas slice,

Chocolate and fresh Cherries - perfect choices for the occa-

sion. - “Compliments to the Chefs” for preparing and serving

this magnificent Supper!

Having had a sensational evening of dining, singing, dancing

and friendship the time came for President Trevor to pre-

sent a speech of thanks and appreciation to the Organisers

and to all those who contributed in any way to the wonder-

ful success of the Christmas Supper and closing with Sea-

sons Greetings to us all.

’WELL DONE MODEL T FORD CLUB - CHRISTMAS 2019”

“CHRISTMAS IN THE CLUB”

As this was my first Christmas get together as the new kid on the block, I didn’t know what

to expect but found it quite an enjoyable evening. It was wonderful to see so many attend

the Club Rooms for the event. Four tables laid out with a very festive centrepiece on each

including festive lights. The bucks and the steers glisten in gold added to the visual sen-

sors.

Many thanks to Maxine and Doretta for such a wonderful spread, for the hard work and

effort to make the evening a delight.

Nibbles on approach. followed by Chicken platters. The prawns went down well, I think

there may have been a competition or two as to who could peel the most and who could

eat them all. And as for the Sweets platter did anyone have any rocky road or white Christ-

mas left.

Thanks to Tony and his selection of music. Wonderful to see so many getting up and danc-

ing and the unprompted Karaoke along with the tunes. Very impressive efforts to attempt

line dance doing the Nutbush to love is in the air. Special commendation needs to go to

Paul Van Ruth for audition to be pretty woman, although most believe he may have pulled

it off (or not), very entertaining

Wonderful catch up for all as evident by the level of chatter across the evening which con-

tinued well into the night

Hope you all had a wonder Christmas and look forwarded to a good new year.

replace the Wholesale Sales Tax which protected the local car industry, but was not intended for Histor-

15.4. Membership badges: a new supplier has been identified and there is close to sufficient

demand to justify an order. If anyone requires a badge, please contact the Secretary.

15.5. John Clarke asked about chromers. John was referred to the advertisers in the Buzzer

Box and Neil Murrie further suggested Delaware Brass.

15.6. Nancy Bennett addressed the meeting about several matters. Firstly, Nancy thanked

those who attended the National Rally for supporting Allan who participated without her. Sec-

ondly, Nancy thanked members for their support of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of SA & NT

(MS) who were supporting their son Craeg. In addition, Nancy thanked Natalie Wood for the

cards made to also support MS fund raising. Recent diagnosis is that Craeg has Leukodystro-

phy, not Multiple Sclerosis. Both Nancy and Allan will undergo genetic testing. The Bennetts

feel awkward about this and no longer receive support from MS. In response, the President

wished the Bennetts all the best for the future and particularly ongoing care for Craeg.

15.7. Rod Crawford showed off his sketch of the Yellow Peril. It was prepared by a chap who

was present at the recent Regis Resident’s Day and Rod is extremely happy with it. This chap

is available for sketching and Rod has his contact details for anyone interested.
