Do you know Unaffiliated Jews in Chester County, Montgomery County

and Delaware County?

Celebrate with an Oneg

Do you have Jewish friends or acquaintances who live in Chester County, Montgomery County and Delaware County who are not already members of a synagogue? If you do, why not invite them to one of the upcoming events at Or Shalom, for example our next Friday night dinner? They may have a good time and decide to come back. They may have such a good time that they decide to become members themselves. According to a recent survey by the Jewish Federation, there are many, many unaffiliated Jews in Chester county. We’d love to contact them, but don’t know who they are. You can help. Todah rabah!

The President’s Column

Do we have a complete list of

your Yahrzeits? We send out a reminder letter each month. If

you don’t get one, we don’t have your Yahrzeit records up to date. Email the office with the name,

relationship to member, and civil date

including year and we will add it to our records.

Dear Congregants, While we usually have a

minyan during Sabbath services, there are times we miss.

It is especially disheartening when we miss and someone is

here to say kaddish. If you intend to

celebrate a Yahrzeit, please inform Rabbi Jacob and he will make telephone calls to ensure there. It would also be helpful if

you could bring members of your family or friends.

Thank you

Rabbi Jacob

President’s Message – December 2016

This week, my nephew, his wife and their two young children were among the 80,000 residents of Haifa that were evacuated due to the wild fires that spread throughout the area. As of this writing there have been eight people arrested and accused of arson. It remains to be seen if this was a terror attack. They have not yet returned to their home but suspect their flat will be uninhabitable and their possessions will be a total loss. They will survive but it’s just another reminder how we are all tied together within the Jewish community whether it’s in Israel or here in Berwyn. Now that the weather is getting colder several of our mem-bers who come to services regularly and contribute to the wellbeing of Or Shalom will be heading to warmer climates for the winter, including me. I will continue to be available by phone and e mail and our very capable Vice Presidents, Andy Levin and Barbara Belkin are here as always as part of the Executive Committee. Also, I ask all of you to think about coming to services occasionally Friday night and/or Saturday morning. There is a great feeling to be part of a full synagogue as we had recently during our first Sunday Hebrew school session at Or Shalom. It would be great to see that type of community gathering on Shabbat. We also need your help for our fund raiser, the Or Shalom Spring Art Auction on March 26, 2017. We are planning a fun and exciting evening. Bring your family and friends. Also, please volunteer to join the committee or help us the day of the event. You can contact Betsy Cohen or Na’ama Yarden for details. Finally, one of our longtime members Diana Braunstein moved away from our area but left a lasting legacy by donating the remaining moneys in the David M. Braunstein Memorial Scholarship fund to Or Shalom. The funds will be used specifically to plan and seed fund raising events in the future. I hope you all have a happy Chanukah and enjoy the remainder of 2016.

Mitzvah of the Month Rabbi Jacob Rosner

I don’t recall experiencing the confluence of seasons when Hanukkah and Christmas began on the exact same night. For once when we wish one another “Season’s Greetings” or “Happy Holiday” , we are be-ing ecumenical. The truth is I have never hesitated to wish my Christian friends a “Merry Christmas”, which leads to the question we have been studying in our adult education class: How should we as Jews view Christianity? The topic is somewhat controversial. History is replete with Christian hatred toward Jews leading to so much death and destruction. The crusades, the inquisition, expulsions from various European nations were all results of hateful teachings of the church. Even as early as the 12th century, Maimonides referred to Christianity as a false religion and as the greatest stumbling block to our people. Clearly, to Maimonides Christianity is no better than any other form of idolatry. But his is not the only voice in our tradition. The Torah teaches us that God promised that we were destined to be a kingdom of priests and a light to the nations. but were those promises fulfilled? After all we are a tiny people. To think of ourselves as chosen to deliver the word of God to all of humanity seems grandiose. Rabbi Shlomo Riskin, a well known modern orthodox rabbi quoted rabbi Yaakov Emden an 18th centu-ry sage who taught that the harsh statements made in the Talmud concerning our relationship with the pagan world do not apply to Christians or Muslims, who, after all, worship the same God as we do and who are morally influenced by God and Torah. This point of view is controversial. Rabbi Shachther of Yeshiva University castigated Rabbi Riskin and referred back to Maimonides . In his article he refuses to even name Jesus of Nazareth, instead referring to him as “oso haish” or “that man”. I would suggest that in the world of haredi orthodoxy, his is the dominant position. I remember in my own youth referring to Jesus with disdain as “yushka” Today when the church has apologized for her past, when she has recognized that the covenant with Israel has never been abolished, we can respond with openness of our own. Those who believe that there is only one spiritual pathway, that God would somehow condemn those who follow the spiritual teachings of their parents, are guilty of defamation of the character of God. To-rah and mitzvoth are the spiritual pathway we Jews are obliged to follow, after all we have a binding covenant. But we ought to take pride that the blessing of being a kingdom of priests and a light to the nations has been fulfilled by Christianity and Islam. many people have come to the understanding of a compassionate god who loves each and every one of us and who hears our prayers through the prism of our 2 daughter abrahamic faiths. So, if you ask me, it is proper to say Merry Christmas to our Christian friends Happy Hannukah,

The "Festival of lights" – A new twist to an old tradition The Hebrew month of Kislev, which comes this year on December 1st, is all about Hanukkah. Chag HaUrim, the beautiful Festival of Lights, comes at the darkest time of the year. Hanukkah is an easy holiday to enjoy. It appeals to all of our senses: spinning a dreidle, striking a match in the darkness, candles flickering in the Hanukkiah, voices join together in memorable songs, the house fills with the aroma of latkes frying, and the food is irresistable. Hanukkah also resonates with our sensibilities of collective memory and justice. By lighting the Hanukkiah, we ignite the flame in our souls, the spark that cannot be extinguished, that will burn not for eight days but for eternity. We place the Hanukkiah in our windows to be visible to those passing by, just as our inner light must shine against the darkness of evil and indifference and must kindle the spirits of our fellow humans. (excerpted from: Strassfeld, The Jewish Holidays: A Guide and Commentary) Hanukkah, of course, is not the most visible winter holiday in our midst. With so many people swept up in the spirit of roasting chestnuts on an open fire and dreaming of a white Christmas the light of our little candles can be overshadowed by tall Christmas trees. (Both of those songs, by the way, were written by Jews) Preparing for Hanukkah also sheds light on how challenging it is to raise our children to take part in carrying on our traditions. The Maccabees may have faced with a choice between assimilation and rebellion, but we are free to celebrate and to cultivate our traditions in an open society. Ironically, perhaps, the less we are subjected and reminded that we are different, the easier it can be to lose sight of who we are. For that reason, it is important to add our own layers of contemporary meaning to the themes of our ancient holidays. In addition to remembering the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem after the Maccabean Revolt and the reciting the blessings, we can also rededicate ourselves to adding light to the world. Illuminate the power of our deeds and the values we want to teach our chil-dren. Get them thinking about what it is in their lives to which they would like to dedicate a candle. Here are eight ideas for eight days of Hanukah, that you could start with: * Dedicate a candle to a contemporary hero, someone famous or someone particularly important to your family. How can you embody the characteristics of this hero? Discuss what you can learn from this per-son and how you can embody the heroic characteristics you admire. * As you light a candle dedicate yourself to the heroic work you would like to see done in the world. How can you take part in it? * Can you add light to someone’s life during a dark time? * Which things bring light into your life? How can we make sure to include them in our daily routine? * Dedicate a candle to ensure that your grandchildren and theirs will continue this ancient celebration of the People of Israel. What is your contribution to this epic goal? * Tell the story of Hanukkah and discuss what can we learn from it? How can we take the idea of fighting for Religious freedom into our life? * Since the food of Hanukkah is all about the oil, think of other food that you can add to your table. * Act out the story of Hanukkah with the whole family. Add a modern twist to it. ** Extra one for the Shamash- Instead of many presents for each day, maybe think together how can you help eight other people this year. Take advantage of all of the serious and silly Hanukkah related material on the Internet to help you plan or to spice up your celebration. I just entered "Hanukkah" and came up with 2,580,000 hits, 78,685 images and 384,785 videos. It's too bad we only have eight nights to see it all! Happy Hanukkah

Sisterhood news

Hello everyone Sisterhood has got off to a great start this year. Our trip to the mikveh at Temple Beth Hillel-Beth El was a rousing success. We learned about the history of Mikvehs, what makes a mikveh kosher, and about when and how the mikveh at Beth Hillel is used. Our visit was followed by a delightful lunch at Sabrina’s café. Please join us on December 22 at 12 pm to make latkes. We will roll up our sleeves, pat those pancakes, and generally have a good time. And be sure to come to our Chanukah Party on December 24th from 6:00 to 8:00pm. The Chanukah Party will feature Chinese food (it will be Christmas eve, after all), Israeli dancing, Bingo, a gift exchange, and weather permitting, roasting s’mores around our new fire pit. Look for an email, soon to be arriving, with more information about our Chanukah event. A special thanks goes to Liz Hyams who has graciously agreed to host our next Happy Hour at her home on January 8th. Spouses and significant others are invited! Sunday evening from 6-8pm – Please mark your calendars. One last item: Joshua Michael Morgenstern, my first grandchild, was born on 10/11/2016. Mazel Tov to me! Hello, Israel’s 70th and 75th “birthdays” (2018 and 2023) may seem far away but from a planning perspective they’re around the corner. If we, as a community, want to come together to observe, commemorate and celebrate these anniversaries, we need to start NOW. This forum is part of a larger planning process that we hope will ensure that as many community voices as possible help define the goals we should aim for and recommend programming ideas to make those goals come alive. An additional five live town halls and one virtual one are being planned so that people from all parts of the region can share their ideas and help make our ob-servance a truly representative affair (a full list of dates and venues appear below). We are also asking you to get the word out to your people about these town halls through email blasts, pulpit announcements and any other way you use to let your community know of im-portant events. Those interested in attending one of the town halls can register here. All town halls are open to all community members regardless of place of residence. The only thing we request is creative ideas and a strong measure of civility to allow all ideas to be entertained and discussed. This is the time to brainstorm! Israel means so much to so many people in our area. Let’s build on that love and devotion and make this planning process and its outcomes a smashing success!
