This fall marks an important milestone in Crowden’s history: one full decade under the leadership of Doris Fukawa as Executive Director!

Appointed Crowden’s Interim ED in 2005, Doris agreed to serve in the position permanently in 2006. We celebrated that an-niversary this September at a very special Fall Preview membership event, hosted by former Board Chair Sallie Arens. A remarkable cross-

section of people from all stages of Crowden’s history gathered to hear Doris present a behind-the-scenes peek into Crowden’s 2016-17 concert season and to enjoy a lively perfor-mance by Crowden School alumnus violinist Owen Dalby (TCS ’98) and faculty pianist Miles Graber. The evening was peppered with heartwarming surprises for Doris, including a scrapbook commemorating events from her tenure, and written testimonials from the many friends and colleagues who have shared her ten-year journey. Two former trustees, Sallie and former vice chair Deborah O’Grady, spoke in Doris’s honor.

“What I wanted especially to empha-

size in my remarks that night was that while people always talk about the two big moments in Crowden’s history—its founding by Anne and the move to its own building in 1998—we should now recognize a third, which is Doris’s agreement in 2006 to serve as Crowden’s per-manent Executive Director,” comments Sallie. “Her importance to Crowden now and in the future cannot be overstated.”

“It’s not my style to be the center of at-tention,” Doris reflects. “I was overwhelmed thinking about the truly wonderful and dedi-cated faculty and staff we have put together, and seeing so many loyal and passionate Board members and supporters. I was filled with deep

growth and development over ten years—we've created the John Adams Young Composers Program (which is about to celebrate its tenth year), reestablished our chamber music pro-grams for youth and adults, developed systems and organizational structure for long term sustainability, and found a way to renovate

our beloved ‘barn’ into a recognized concert space in the Bay Area. Our outreach programs, including our public school outreach, Sundays @ Four chamber music series, and Community Music Day, serve many hundreds of children and families, and of course, The Crowden School continues to provide excellent educa-tion for our young musicians.

off our mortgage in spite of the recession and establish an endowment is extremely gratifying. I hope to grow our endowment and continue to lead this incredible organization with an expansion of the quality programs and teaching that are our hallmarks.

Mortgage Bonfire

This August, we made the final payment on our mortgage for Crowden’s landmark building on Rose Street, an occasion that inspired the theme behind last spring’s immensely success-ful gala, Keys to Crowden. As a final celebra-tion of this important milestone, we held a symbolic burning of the mortgage paperwork. This triumphant event gathered Crowden trustees and individuals who played key roles in acquiring the building, who each lit a copy of the mortgage on ceremonial fire!

Board Update

The Crowden Board of Trustees approved new officers and members this fall. We are very pleased to welcome two new members with deep ties to our day school: JAMES MARKS,

father of Helen Marks (TCS ’01), and MARIA

PONCEL, mother of Sofia Poncel (TCS ’17). Departing this term are trustees KATE BE-

RENSON, ANGELA JONES, BENNETT

MARKEL, and JASON WANG. Bennett Markel, an ardent Crowden trustee since 2008 and perhaps our most regular concert-goer, has been named to Crowden’s Advisory Commit-tee. TIMOTHY DER has been elected our new Board Chair, with ANNE NESBET

named Vice Chair, EARL RUPP Treasurer, and TRACY DOOLEY (TCS �95) Secretary. Previous Secretary ANGELA ARCHIE and Treasurer ZACHARY GRIFFIN will not serve in officer roles this year, but continue as valued, long-term Board members.

Crowden’s Sundays @ Four chamber music series always features an alumni concert. In this year’s season, alumni connections take center stage in every single concert.

“I try to program a special alumni concert each season, but this year is pretty unusual,” explains series curator Eugene Sor. “All four of this year's concerts feature musicians with strong Crowden roots, ranging from one of Anne Crowden's violin students to alumni of the Crowden School, and even an alumni parent!”

The series opened on October 2 with two former Crowden School classmates: pianist AUDREY VARDANEGA (�09) and violinist KENNETH RENSHAW (�08). These two musicians first began to collaborate as Crowden School students, and despite individual careers of rising prominence, still make a point of

reuniting to concertize together. A near capac-ity crowd was treated to a magnificent program of Mozart, Schubert, and Brahms to open the series.

The next concert featured Crowden School alumnus violinist JORY

FANKUCHEN (’91), who is also now a longtime Crowden faculty member. Squid Inc., which proclaims itself “the Bay Area's renegade string quartet,” promotes classical music by performing original compositions and arrange-ments from far outside the classical genre. Their exciting program ranged from contem-porary tone poems to an arrangement of Bay Area funk legends Tower of Power’s Down to the Nightclub.

Our next Sundays @ Four concert, coming up on February 26, features relationships that harken to Crowden’s early history. Internation-ally renowned violinist and pedagogue NORA

CHASTAIN, who is the granddaughter of composer Roy Harris, began her violin studies here in Berkeley with Anne Crowden. Now based in Berlin and one of Europe’s most

sought-after violin teachers, her Sundays @ Four concert is a rare opportunity to hear her perform in her hometown. Ms. Chastain will be accompanied by local pianist ROY BO-

GAS, who is himself a former Crowden School parent, father of alumna Sharon Jacobs (’94).

This year's Sundays @ Four closes on March 26 with one of the world’s undisputed great ensembles, the St. Lawrence String Quartet. Crowden School alumnus OWEN

DALBY (’98) is second violinist in this acclaimed Stanford University Quartet-in-Residence. St. Lawrence has programmed an afternoon of masterworks for their Crowden appearance, including John Adams’ Second Quartet, a piece they workshopped with the composer here earlier this year in a fascinating performance for Crowden students in the John Adams Young Composers Program.
