The 17th Research Advisory Committee (RAC) meeting was held at

Indian Institute of Millets Research (IIMR) during 8-9 September, 2016 under the Chairmanship of Dr. YS Nerkar, Former Vice-Chancellor, MPKV, Rahuri. The ICAR was represented by Dr. IS Solanki, ADG (FFC). Other nominated members present were: Drs. Dr. Vilas A Tonapi, Director, IIMR highlighted the progress made at IIMR during 2015-16, and projected the plan for sorghum and other millets research and development, which was fully supported by relevant documents submitted to the committee. The scientists representing different the-matic areas presented the progress, achievements and expected outcome from their projects.

The Chairman appreciated the overall efforts being made in develop-ing new programmes and expressed his happiness over the way presentations were made. The members were pleased to note in-creased number of quality research publications and recognitions to scientists at IIMR. The minutes are being finalized.

Training Programme on “Empowering millets stakeholders through Processing & Commerciali-zation of Value-added technologies”

Indian Institute of Millets Research organized a two-day training pro-gramme entitled “Empowering millets stakeholders through Process-ing & Commercialization of Value-added technologies”” during 16 –

17 September, 2016, For Karnataka farmers under NFSM project. Total 32 participants from different districts of Karnataka participated in this programme. Dr. Vilas A Tonapi, Director, IIMR welcomed the participants and briefed them about the purpose of organizing this training programme. Dr B Dayakar Rao, Course Director, IIMR pre-sented the overview of sorghum value chain project and experiences and its impact. Smt. V Usha Rani, DG, MANAGE, Hyderabad was the chief guest at inaugural session. Guest lectures were delivered by Mr. Sai Krishna Popuri MD, Fountainhead Foods Pvt Ltd. Hyderabad and Dr. Jyotirmayi, Principal Scientist, CFTRI, Hyderabad, Dr. Bhaskara-chary, Scientist-D, NIN, Hyderabad, Dr. K Uma Maheswari, Principal Scientist, Hyderabad. Demonstration and operation of primary proc-essing equipment was done by Mr. Thomas Nicodemus, ICRISAT. The valedictory session was chaired by Dr. KR Jahanmohan, State Planning Commission, Tamil Nadu, Chennai. Demonstration and operation of primary processing equipment was done by Mrs. Vishala Devender and Ms. Arlene Christina. The NFSM team members, Sudha A. Kiranmai and other staff demonstrated the preparation of recipes from millets Drs. A Kalaisekar, Principal Scientist and San-gappa, Scientist were the course Coordinators and Nodal Officer for this event was Mrs. Vishala A.D. Monitoring of Sorghum DUS testing trials

The sorghum DUS testing trials conducted at IIMR, monitored on 21 September 2016 under the Chairmanship of Dr. D Raji Reddy, Direc-tor of Research, PJTSAU, Hyderabad as per the guidelines of PPV&FR Authority. Dr. Vilas A Tonapi, Director; Dr. C Aruna , Princi-pal Scientist and Co-nodal Officer; Dr. C Deepika, Scientist and Dr. M Elangovan , Principal Scientist from IIMR, attended the monitoring. Dr. Hariprasanna K, Nodal Officer, IIMR explained the DUS testing for different candidate varieties taken up along with the claimed distinct characteristics for each candidate variety and the expression of the same in the field. There were 19 candidate and 15 reference varieties under 1st year testing, and 13 candidate and 19 reference varieties

under 2nd year testing. The Chairman appreciated well the overall conduct of DUS testing trials and expressed satisfaction over the performance of the candidate varieties. The crop growth and expres-sion of morphological characters were satisfactory in almost all of the candidate varieties. Wherever there was slight difference in the ob-served and claimed state of the traits, it was noted and all the com-mittee members agreed with the observation of the Nodal Officer. Dr. Hariprasanna informed the monitoring committee that the farmers’ varieties tested during the season were found to be adapted to rabi season and therefore, the committee agreed to test the entries again during the ensuing rabi season. The report of the monitoring team and DUS test proformae for the candidate varieties were prepared and finalized.

Training Course on “Best practices for sorghum cultivation”

An eight day Model Training Course on “Best practices for sorghum cultivation and importance of value-addition” was organized at Indian Institute of Millets Research (IIMR) during 20-27 September, 2016. Dr. Ramesh Chand, Joint Director, DOE, New Delhi was the Special

Guest, Dr. Vijayraghavan, Ex-Director (Extension), IARI was the Chief Guest of the inaugural session. Total 36 trainees from state agricul-ture departments of Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh participated in this training course. The Course Director, Dr. RR Chapke welcomed the partici-pants and enlightened the programme schedule in a nut shell. Dr. Vilas A Tonapi, Director, IIMR delivered the Inaugural address.

The training programme broadly covered the technological aspects of improved sorghum production technologies, preparation and market-ing of value-added products, forage and sweet sorghum, and innova-tive extension approaches, etc. Besides the scientists from IIMR, a few from outside organizations, ICRISAT, NIPHM, NIN, PJTSAU, High Tech Power Gen and NAARM of Hyderabad also addressed the participants as resource persons. The training methodologies used were interactive lectures using audio-visual aids, visit to research facilities and field demonstration at IIMR and ICRISAT. The training concluded on 27 September, 2016 and Dr. Ravindrababu, Director,

IIRR, Hyderabad was the Chief Guest of the valedictory session. He also distributed the certificates to the participants. This programme was sponsored by Directorate of Extension (DOE), Ministry of Agricul-ture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India.

Programme on “Cooking with Millets”

A Programme on “Cooking with Millets” was organized by IIMR for the families of “Agri Professional Association” Hyderabad, to popularize

the usage of millets as nutri-cereals. More than 100 participants en-joyed and appreciated the lectures, cooking demonstrations and mil-let lunch. This programme at IIMR was coordinated by Drs. B Daya-kar Rao, B Venkatesh Bhat, Sangappa, Sh. Raghunath Kulakarni, Mrs. Vishala Devender and her team. IIMR intends to hold similar programmes in future through the millets society and other organiza-tions.

Visit of Chairman- Working Group on Bio-fuels (GoI)

Dr. YB Ramakrishna, Chairman- Working Group on Bio-fuels, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gases, Government of India, New Delhi

visited IIMR on 28 September, 2016. Dr. Vilas Tonapi, Director, IIMR briefed him about the ongoing institute’s research activities and latest innovations in value added products. Dr. Umakanth, Principal scien-tist explained in detail about the sweet sorghum cultivation practices and prospects producing of ethanol from sorghum at an economical outlay compared to extraction from traditional sugarcane. Dr. Rama-krishna interacted with the scientists of IIMR and discussed on utiliza-tion of sweet sorghum as bio-fuel for first and second generation feed stock. He also visited the research farm, Centre on Excellence on value added sorghum products and upcoming facilitates at IIMR. Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav: A team of 5 scientists from IIMR, Hyderabad visited Maharajpet vil-lage, in Shankarpally Mandal in Ranga Reddy District of Telangana State on 20 September, 2016. The main objectives of the visit were to strengthen interface with farmers and to update farmers on agro-practices as a part of Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav (MGMG). The follow-ing scientists viz., Drs. TG Nageshwar Rao, Ch Shashidhar Reddy, A

Kalaisekar, B Subbarayudu, N Kanna babu, P Sanjana Reddy, Avi-nash Singode, KN Ganapathy, and C Deepika have visited the village and interacted with the farmers. Similarly, On 21 September, 2016, scientist from IIMR, Hyderabad visited Narlakunta Thanda at Karkal-pahad Village, Amangal Mandal, Mahabubnagar district, Telangana state and organized the farmers interface programme and distributed “soil health cards” to the farmers. Dr. Ch Shashidhar Reddy, Nodal officer for MGMG coordinated these visits.

Memorandum of Understanding MANAGE, Hyderabad. Memorandum of Understanding between ICAR-IIMR and National Institute of Agricultural extension and Management (MANAGE) was

signed to facilitate academic and research cooperation between the parties based upon the principles of mutual benefit. This Agreement shall be in force for a period of 36 months from 16 September, 2016. Dr Vilas A Tonapi, Director – IIMR on behalf of IIMR and Smt. V Usha Rani, DG, on behalf of MANAGE, signed and exchanged the agree-ment.

M/s Christy Foods, TN. Memorandum of Understanding between ICAR-IIMR and M/s Christy Foods, Chettikadu village, Andipalayam, Tiruchengode, Namakkal district, Tamil Nadu was signed on 16 September, 2016 to license the

IIMR technology on Jowar puffs and Jowar Muesli to be marketed by

M/s Christy Foods under their brand name in retail and wholesale. This Agreement shall be in force for a period of 3 years. Dr Vilas A Tonapi, Director – IIMR on behalf of IIMR and Mr. S Mani on behalf of M/s Christy Foods, signed and exchanged the agreement.

Both the agreements were facilitated by Dr. B Dayakar Rao, Principal Investigator – CoE-Sorghum.

Bhoomi Pooja for new Administrative-cum-Laboratory building

Dr. Vilas A Tonapi, Director, IIMR performed the sacred “Bhoomi Pooja” for the upcoming new Administrative building in presence of Dr. IS Solanki, ADG (FFC), ICAR, New Delhi at IIMR – Hyderabad

on 8 September, 2016. Earlier, Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary- DARE and Director General, ICAR had laid the foundation for this building at Indian Institute of Millets Research, Hyderabad during his first visit on 26 March, 2016.

ITMU meeting

The IIMRs Institute Technology Management Committee meeting was held on 30 September, 2016. Dr Vilas A Tonapi, Director and Chairman ITMU – IIMR chaired the session. The meeting was at-tended by Dr SK Soam, Principal Scientist and IPR Expert, NAARM and other member’s from IIMR namely Drs. HS Talwar, Sh. Saroj Kumar Singh Administrative Officer. Dr. K Srinivas, Principal Scien-tist, COE of E-Idea, NAARM was the special invitee. The meeting was organized by Dr. B Dayakar Rao, Member Secretary and Nodal Officer (IPR) under the guidance of Director, IIMR. The agenda items that were discussed and decision taken during the meeting were: New grain sorghum hybrids for production through KSSC and MSSC for popularization, technology licencing of flakes, revival of populari-zation of millets and millets prodcuts through Millet Rath etc.

New Processing Lab facility

Sh. D. Jaganmohan Rao, Assistant Engineer (Civil), CPWD, Hydera-

bad formally handed over the newly constructed food processing lab facility of IIMR to Dr. Vilas A Tonapi , Director, IIMR on 8 September, 2016. This facility is mainly meant for Agribusiness Incubator sanc-tioned by the Council and technology business incubator sanctioned by DST.

Entrepreneurs: Mr. G Krishna Prasad, Director, Sahaja Samrudhi organic farming association of Karnataka, Bangalore visited IIMR on 27 September,

2016. He had a detailed discussion with the Director on the issue of Memorandum of Agreement on popularization of millets, their value added technologies and commercialization. Issues relating to millet health foods, including publishing a Millet Calendar -2017 were also discussed. Drs. B Dayakar Rao, B Venkatesh Bhat, Principal Scientists and Sh. AN Murty, FAO also participated in the discussions.

Mr. CS Jadhav, Inner Being wellness Pvt, Ltd. Hyderabad along with Sh. Rituraj Pathak, & Mrs. Pooja, Advisors, MPA Finsecurities (P)

Ltd, Ahmedabad visited IIMR on 19 September, 2016. They had a detailed discussion with Dr. Vilas A Tonapi, Director, IIMR on the issue of up-scaling the available technologies on sorghum and licensing and commercialization. Issues relating to millet health foods, training com-ponents, including the mechanism to evolve contracts with the indus-tries were also discussed. Dr. B Dayakar Rao, Principal Scientist also participated in the discussions.

Prof. Jitendra K Chouhan, Coordinator, Agricultural Education and Extension Affairs, Office of the Union Minister of Agriculture and Farm-ers Welfare, Government of India, New Delhi visited IIMR on 29 Sept,

2016. Dr. Vilas A Tonapi, Director -IIMR, briefed them about institute activities. The discussions were mainly on extension and outreach related activities for nutricereals.

Dr. Dev Raj Arya, Chief Operating Officer & Head, RML Agri tech (P) Ltd, Mumbai visited IIMR on, 29 September, 2016. He had a detailed discussion with the Dr. Vilas A Tonapi, Director, IIMR and Dr. B Dayakar Rao, Principal Scientist and showed interest in devel-oping e-applications for millet growing farmers on recent technolo-gies, seeds and plant protection. FOCARS: Newly recruited ARS scientists of ICAR (FOCARS -104 Batch) from NAARM, Hyderabad visited IIMR on 28 Sept, 2016. Total 73 partici-pants were briefed on the profile of the Institute and other project activities including AlCRP. The discussions were in the area of crop improvement, sweet sorghum utilization and entrepreneurship devel-opment to promote millet foods, and biotechnology. They also vis-ited Gene Bank, and Centre of Excellence on Sorghum and ob-served the production of value added millet products. Drs. RR Chapke, M Elangovan, Principal Scientists and Avinash Singode, Scientist of IIMR shouldered the responsibility of organizing this event.

School Children: Total 59 students of IX std, accompanied by 3 teachers from Secunderabad Public School, Secunderabad visited IIMR on 2 September, 2016. Awareness to students about research activities on sorghum and other millets and preparation and process-ing of different sorghum food products was given. Dr. RR Chapke, Principal Scientist, and Mrs. Vishala Devender, CTO coordinated this visit at IIMR.

Live TV talk Dr. B. Dayakar Rao, Principal scientist, IIMR participated in a live telecast of a regional programme for farmers of Telangana state entitled “Raiytu Nestham" on 25 September 2016 at 6.30 am in Doordarshan (Yadgiri) channel. The topic was “Value-addition in sorghum and other millets to enhance farm income”.

reation Club. Dr. Vilas A Tonapi, felicitated them with a shawl and a memento on behalf of all the staff of IIMR. Staff recollected their services to this organization and wished them a very happy and healthy retired life.

Free Medical Camp

A free medical camp was organized by the Max Cure Hospitals, at IIMR on 1 September, 2016. The camp conducted different types of tests like ECG, blood test, sugar test and free consultation. One physician organized the health camp along with 3 assistants. Most of the employees of IIMR participated in this camp and utilized the services.

भारतीय कद न अनुसधंान सं थान म िहदंी चेतना मास का शुभारंभ भाकृअनुप - भारतीय कद न अनुसंधान सं थान, हैदराबाद म 14 िसतंबर 2016 को िहदंी चेतना मास समारोह का उ घाटन िकया गया । कायर्क्रम का शभुारंभ भारतीय कृिष अनुसंधान पिरषद गान से हुआ । इस अवसर पर डॉ. िवलास ए टोणिप, िनदेशक, भाकअनुसं ने माँ सर वती की प्रितमा पर मा यापर्ण िकया तथा दीप प्र जविलत करके समारोह के शभुारंभ की घोषणा की । इसके अलावा उ ह ने उक्त चेतना मास के दौरान सं थान म िहदंी म ह ताक्षर अिभयान चलाए जाने की जानकारी प्रदान करत े हुए सभी अिधकािरय एवं कमर्चािरय से उसे सफल बनाने हेतु अपील की । डॉ. के बी आर एस िवशारदा, प्रभारी अिधकारी-िहदंी कक्ष ने समारोह म उपि थत लोग का वागत िकया तथा राजभाषा िहदंी के मह व पर प्रकाश डालते हुए बताया िक हमारे शोध पिरणाम को जन-जन तक पहंुचाने हेतु राजभाषा िहदंी म कायर् करना अिनवायर् है । ी एच एस गावली ने िहदंी िदवस के अवसर पर ी राजनाथ िसहं जी, माननीय गहृ मंत्री, भारत सरकार के वारा जारी संदेश को पढ़कर सुनाया । ी सरोज कुमार िसहं, प्रशासिनक अिधकारी ने सं थान के प्रशासिनक अनुभाग म संचािलत राजभाषा कायार् वयन की गितिविधय पर प्रकाश डाला ।

ी ओ वी रमणा ने डॉ. मदृलुा िस हा, माननीय रा यपाल, गोआ सरकार वारा रिचत ‘िहदंी, भारत मां की िबदंी’ नामक किवता का कं यूटर के मा यम से प्र तुतीकरण िकया । डॉ. महेश कुमार, तकनीकी अिधकारी (राजभाषा) ने पॉवर पाइंट प्र तुतीकरण के मा यम से बताया िक इस समारोह के दौरान िहदंी म िविभ न प्रितयोिगताओं जैसे - वणर्माला, बारहखड़ी व संिध िव छेद, छोटे श द एवं पद का िहदंी म अनुवाद, का य-वाचन, श द-लेखन साम यर्, ुत-लेखन (शदु्ध लेखन), िट पण एव ंआलेखन, िनबंध-लेखन, श द-संकेत एवं संज्ञान, िहदंी म पो टर प्र तुतीकरण,

अं याक्षरी, िहदंी पाठ वाचन, मरण शिक्त परीक्षण, आशु-भाषण, प्र न-मंच का आयोजन िकया जाएगा । इस अवसर पर ीमती अ नपूणार्, डॉ. नंदलाल मीणा, ीमती पावर्ती एवं ीमती उषा रानी ने राजभाषा कायार् वयन म तेजी लाने हेतु अपने-अपने सुझाव प्र तुत िकए ।

समारोह के अ यक्ष डॉ. टोणिप ने अपने संबोधन म कहा िक िहदंी चेतना मास से वतः ही प ट हो जाता है िक राजभाषा कायार् वयन के संबंध म जाग कता लाएं । इसके अलावा उ ह ने बताया िक क्षेत्र ‘ग’ म होते हुए भी हमारे सं थान म राजभाषा कायार् वयन सुचा प से संचािलत है । परंतु हम इससे संतु ट नहीं होना चािहए, बि क इसम और तेजी लाते हुए राजभाषा िवभाग वारा िनधार्िरत ल य से भी यादा कायर् करना चािहए । अंत म ी सरोज कुमार िसहं के वारा ध यवाद ज्ञापन, त प चात सामूिहक प से रा ट्रगान के बाद समारोह का समापन हुआ । इस पूरे कायर्क्रम का सम वय तथा संचालन डॉ. टोणिप के िदशा-िनदश म डॉ. िवशारदा तथा डॉ. महेश कुमार के वारा िकया गया। Millets Newsletter No. 155; September, 2016 Page 6 of 8

भारतीय कद न अनुसथंान सं थान म िहदंी कायर्शाला सपं न भाकृअनुप - भारतीय कद न अनुसंधान सं थान, हैदराबाद म िहदंी चेतना मास की शृखंला म 30 िसतंबर, 2016 को िहदंी कायर्शाला के दौरान िहदंी म एक अितिथ याख्यान का आयोजन िकया गया । इस कायर्शाला म प्रो. अ ण ितवारी, कायर्पालक िनदेशक, केयर फाउंडशेन अितिथ वक्ता के प म उपि थत थे । कायर्शाला के प्रारंभ म डॉ. के बी आर एस िवशारदा, प्रभारी अिधकारी-िहदंी कक्ष ने कायर्शाला म अितिथ वक्ता एव ंसमारोह म उपि थत सहभािगय का वागत िकया । त प चात सं थान के िनदेशक के वारा अितिथ वक्ता का पु पगु छ से वागत िकया गया । प्रो. अ ण ितवारी जी ने “सफलता के पथ” पर अपना वक्त य प्र तुत िकया । उ ह ने अपने वक्त य के दौरान बताया िक प्र येक कायर् म तीन मूल त व - क पना, पिवत्रता तथा ई वर पर भरोसे की प्रधानता होती है और इन तीन त व के कारण ही हम ईमानदारी, स चाई व िह मत प्रा त होती है । अतः हम अपने काय के प्रित ईमानदार होना आव यक है, तभी आ मतुि ट िमल सकती है, आ मतुि ट शरीर को व थ रखती है और व थ शरीर सफलता का एक प्रमुख सोपान है । इसके अलावा उ ह ने बताया िक एक साथ एक ही समय पर कई कायर् करने से हम काय पर पूरा यान नहीं दे पाते ह । अतः हम एक समय पर एक ही कायर् करते हुए अपने

कायर् पर पूरा यान किद्रत करना चािहए तािक उस कायर् म कोई गलती न हो । डॉ. िवलास ए टोणिप, िनदेशक, भाकअनुसं ने अपने अ यक्षीय भाषण म बताया िक अगर हम प्रो. ितवारी जी के बताए मागर् का दस प्रितशत भी अनुकरण करते ह तो हमारे काय की सफलता म बीस प्रितशत विृद्ध हो सकती है । इसके अलावा उ ह ने बताया की हम हमारे काय म पारदिशर्ता बनाए रखने के िलए राजभाषा िहदंी को प्रमुखता देना चािहए । अंत म डॉ. महेश कुमार, तकनीकी अिधकारी (राजभाषा) के

वारा ध यवाद ज्ञापन के प चात कायर्शाला का समापन हुआ । इस पूरी कायर्शाला का सम वय एवं संचालन डॉ. के बी आर एस िवशारदा तथा डॉ. महेश कुमार के वारा िकया गया ।
