The Plan was approved, resulting in an unprecedented co-operation between all parties. VRP and the TGA are in close communications, working together for the upcoming meet beginning November 25, 2016 and running until February 4, 2017. We are currently still in the planning stages and the finer details are being worked out, but we’ll keep everyone informed as things are finalized. Due to the changing environment and reduction in revenue, it is necessary to do it this way and it will greatly benefit greyhound breeders and also the tracks. The plan for VRP’s meet is to be like the horse meets; running a short meet with higher purses. We believe this will keep live racing in Texas until such a time the purse revenue can be increased in other ways. There will be one meet a year, with Valley Race Park, Gulf Greyhound Park & Gulf Coast Racing, alternating the meets. The accumulated purse money from simulcasting during the year will be paid out during the meet. Our goal has been to come up with ways to benefit our breeders and reward them with having a place to run their puppies in-state, as well as stimulating future breedings. We encourage the membership to continue breeding the highest quality of puppies in the age groups from February - July or older, so you can reap the rewards in the future meets. HARLINGEN — Seven years after the dogs packed up and left, greyhound racing is returning to Valley Race Park. Texas Racing Commission officials confirmed yesterday the park has been cleared to resume a full slate of live dog racing. The park has requested and been granted 36 racing days. Employees at Valley Race Park say it isn’t known which dates the greyhounds will run. But when they do, races will be held four days a week, with 10 races planned each day. “The commission did grant some additional race dates to Valley Race Park,” Robert Elrod, spokesman for the commission, said yesterday. “They already had one scheduled for 2016 (Nov. 26) and the commission granted an additional 35. This is all the result of a plan the dog racing industry brought to the commission this week.” Andrea Young, president of Valley Race Park Inc., requested dates be granted for racing from Nov. 25, 2016, and ending Feb. 4. “We feel that those dates will provide large purse monies to attract the best greyhounds available and also will present a viable marketing event,” Young wrote. The combined plan the three dog tracks in Texas submitted to the commission was on behalf of Young, Sally Briggs of Gulf Greyhound Park in La Marque and Gulf Coast Racing in Corpus Christi, and David Peck, president of the Texas Greyhound Association. The analysis from track operators about greyhound racing’s status was grim. Gulf Greyhound Park has during the past five years had 1,356 greyhound race dates, the letter noted. Yet it wasn’t enough to turn an acceptable profit. “Due to increasing competition from 8-liners, the lottery, online wagering and bordering state casinos, GPP began suffering increasingly high operating losses over the past several years. These mounting losses caused GGP to make the decision to cease live racing at the end of 2015.”

The analysis blamed the tracks’ problems on “outside forces and regulation,” and said their new plan would change the status quo of dog racing in Texas. Key to this new plan, they say, is to rotate two-to three-month race meets each year between the three dog tracks with Valley Race Park going first. “… all purse money generated for greyhound racing will have to be allocated to the one single track running live that year.” The plan says all tracks will benefit from this truncated racing season, and will allow them to better market greyhound racing. It also allows the industry to take advantage of Texas’ warmer winter weather, holidays, and winter transplants (“snowbirds”). Since the greyhounds were shipped out of Valley Race Park in 2009, the park has survived on live simulcasts of dog and horse racing, pay-per-view sports and as a venue for special events such as weddings and banquets. Since 2009, live greyhound racing has returned occasionally to Valley Race Park but only temporarily. The first dog races at the 6,000-seat Valley Race Park occurred in 1990. Greyhound racing in the United States has been in decline for decades, a victim of changing entertainment tastes and increased competition for gambling dollars from casinos and other gaming options. From 2001 to 2010, betting at dog tracks declined 67 percent nationally. It is no coincidence this occurred during the rapid expansion of casinos that now operate in 33 states. Texas has one such casino, the Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino in Eagle Pass, but greyhound and horse tracks also compete against eight-liners and casinos in neighboring states. There are 19 greyhound tracks still operating in the country, a dozen of them in Florida. The primary source of revenue for track operators there comes from slot machines and poker rooms – not dogs.

Under Florida law, in order to offer other gaming like slots and poker, tracks have to offer dog racing. This year, track owners were pushing to get rid of the dogs and still be allowed to keep the slots and poker, known as “decoupling.” The legislation has not passed, but it put greyhound track operators in the unusual position of trashing their own industry to try to convince lawmakers that allowing slots and poker without dogs was good business.

Greyhounds are elite athletes. They need a palatable, low bulk, high energy ration so they can maintain speed and stamina within a set body weight. They need minerals, especially calcium and phosphorus, vitamins, especially A, C, D, and E and electrolytes. All are essential to maintain musculo-skeletal soundness, optimal metabolic activity, strong immune system, and overall health and wellbeing. Coming up with all this is a combination of experience of the farmer or trainer and science. More research is needed into the nutritional and energy requirements of racing greyhounds. Racers in the U.S. are fed once/day a meal of 50-70% meat and the rest dry food plus vitamin/mineral/electrolyte supplement and various additives like pasta, rice, and vegetables. There are probably as many race diets as there are trainers, but this is a basic profile. An all dry food diet is bulky, may be deficient in vitamins and minerals and is less palatable to greyhounds. They prefer a moist diet. Meat is a nutritious, high energy source with less bulk, and they like it. Beef is the most common meat fed to greyhounds. It is fed raw because many believe that is the best way to preserve the quality of the proteins, fats, and vitamins in it. The common source of beef is dairy or beef cattle that have been injured or treated for an illness and are therefore unacceptable for human consumption. Their meat is still high quality, but the processing is less strict, which leads to two very important risk factors. First is the possible presence of drug residues in the meat. A cattle source may be treated with an antibiotic in an attempt by the farmer to save the animal, or it may be humanely euthanized with a barbiturate. These drugs are contaminants and can be detected in the greyhound's urine in extremely low levels (procaine penicillin 0.05 ug/ml). Analytical techniques of today are highly sensitive. A study at Oregon State University (Craig, 1989) evaluated whether small, trace amounts of procaine affected race performance. Results documented that performance was not altered. Studies like this provide valid data to racing officials so they can make informed decisions regarding inadvertent drug residues. Secondly, and far more serious, is the risk of fecal contamination by pathogenic organisms, most commonly Salmonella. Sometimes as much as 40-60% of a batch will have some amount of Salmonella contamination. Being a carnivore, the dog's digestive system is equipped to handle these pathogens, very much more than ours is. Antibacterial enzymes are in saliva. The stomach has strong hydrochloric acid which dissolves food and bacteria. The short intestine and relatively quick passage of food through it doesn't leave much time for any bad bacteria to multiply. A healthy dog can overpower most contamination and build some natural immunity in the process. Puppies, whose immune systems are not active until 6-8 weeks of age, should be fed cooked meat to lessen the chance of Salmonella infection. Greyhound handlers are much more at risk than their dogs are. Good overall sanitation practices reduce the risk. Wear gloves when handling meat. Thaw meat and feed in as short a time as possible. Wash and disinfect feed pans. Pick up turnout pens immediately. Basically, practice good hygiene. This is also true for the newer raw pet diets. Salmonella, Listeria, E.coli O157:H7 and other significant pathogens have been isolated from commercial raw meat diets. Any raw meat source, however processed, has the potential for contamination. Researchers are working on ways to target Salmonella invasion mechanisms so we can hopefully reduce Salmonella in all agricultural animal populations. We will all benefit from this . Advances are also happening in vaccine development, which could mean protecting farm animals, dogs, and people.
