Happy Fall!

As we head into November and TransAwareness Month, we're met with yetanother anti-LGBTQ announcementfrom the Trump administration; thistime in the form of a new proposedrule revoking nondiscriminationregulations in HHS-funded grantprograms based on sex, disability,religion, sexual orientation, genderidentity (and possibly other currentlyprotected classes in 75.300 (c) and(d)). As legal experts review thelanguage, you can sign up forupdates and information about howyou can be engaged.

Fall also means the annual return ofboth Open Enrollment and California'sincreasingly brutal fire season.

I know many of you are currentlybeing impacted by wildfiresthroughout the state. A newly signedlaw will require counties to integratecultural competency into theirupdated emergency plans. In themeantime, I know many of you aregoing the extra mile to ensure thatyour communities are safe. Please seethe updated resources page fromCalifornia's Office of EmergencyServices.

RFA 20-10004 – Rising Alliances for a Tobacco-Free California has beenRFA 20-10004 – Rising Alliances for a Tobacco-Free California has beenreleased.released. The purpose of this RFA is to fund agencies with less than three (3) years ofdemonstrated agency experience in tobacco control work, or who would like to becomeengaged in the tobacco control movement for the first time.

This is an excellent opportunity for Local Lead Agencies (LLAs) to strengthen partnerships atthe local level, and encourage new and non-traditional partners to become involved intobacco control initiatives. Prospective applicants will be contacting LLAs to betterunderstand the current tobacco control landscape in their jurisdictions, and we encourageLLAs to assist them in choosing indicators that will expand and strengthen tobacco controlin their communities.

This RFA will fund approximately fifteen (15) projects, which will build on past efforts toprevent, reduce and eliminate tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke andaerosol produced by e-cigarettes and vaping devices, and engage new agencies whosework aligns with tobacco control in the effort to achieve a tobacco-free California.

Note: For the purposes of these RFAs, the use of the word “tobacco” refers to commercialtobacco products and their use. Any updates and details about these funding opportunitieswill be posted to the TCFOR website.

North County Resource CenterNorth County Resource Center

On October 12 our community of Oceanside and North San Diego County has gathered forour 13th Pride celebration. Almost 10,000 people came and celebrated among kids andfamilies. This pride is quite known in our region to be a place where families feel comfortableto come and spend their days. Over 100 vendors and incredible performance the day wasfilled with cultural celebration of our Native American queer communities and educationalwalks. At We breath we have set up a booth where hundred of people has stopped tothroughout the day, promoted our event and the collaboration with the anti tobaccocampaign. Many greeted us with sympathy and understanding about the need to bringawareness among our youngest generations.
