From The PresidentWhat a month October has been!

We have sponsored many activities and events this month, and our fundraisers have been very successful. A fundraiser is not only a way to raise money and awareness for PTA activities, but it is also a way to create a sense of commu-

nity and to build school spirit. Both aims were accomplished at the FunFest and through some of our other activities, including Walk to School Day and Read for the Record.

Family participation has been amazing! It was great to see so many parents and students walking to school on Walk to School Day and so many families participating in the games, activities and silent auction at the FunFest. Many families supported us through our Innisbrook, Box Tops and Cooks’ Night Out fund-raisers as well.

Staff participation has been outstanding! It means so much to the students and parents to see Welch staff members at events and to have opportunities to interact with them outside of the regular school day. Staff input and participation are extremely valuable and always greatly appreciated.

The amount of support we have received from the community has been awesome! Whether it has been in the form of donated items, services or volunteer time, our community has provided much support and has been a tremendous help in making our activities such as the FunFest, Innisbrook fundraiser and Read for the Record so successful.

We certainly have many things to be thankful for! As Thanks-giving approaches, let’s take time to be thankful for all those around us and for all that we have and to consider helping those who are less fortunate.

Happy Thanksgiving!

On November 16, 2010, the second annual Resource Fair will be held at Still Middle School. Between 40 and 50 vendors will be on hand to present and discuss their services and prod-ucts for families of special needs children. This will take the place of the regularly-scheduled monthly meeting. Everyone is invited to attend!

IPSN PTA is pleased to announce the Teacher Grant program again this year. This program offers the opportunity for teach-ers and staff of special needs students to apply for grants for materials, resources, etc., that can enrich and enhance their current programs. Welch was a recipient of two teacher grants in 2009 (Mrs. Keeley and Mrs. Suman), and we hope to have participation again this year.

Dr. Kathy Birkett, Superintendent of District 204, is participat-ing in a fundraiser for Special Olympics on November 7th. She will be a “celebrity waitress” at McCormick & Schmick’s in Rosemont. She would love to see (and serve) District 204 families!

As October was “Disability Awareness Month,” the display case outside the main office was filled with materials and information to promote and encourage communication and awareness. The display will remain through the end of par-ent-teacher conferences in November. The next time you are in the building, please take a moment to review the informa-tion and use it as an opportunity for open discussion with your child(ren). The LMC has many books available for parents and children on a variety of disability topics.

Get Ready, Get Set, Go Green, Welch Elementary! Happy Fall! The Environmental Committee is once again excited to team with Mrs. Hums to sponsor the Green Club. Permission slips went home in October with 3rd, 4th & 5th graders. The club meets the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month from 3:35pm-4:35pm in Mrs. Hums’ room. (See permission slip for additional info.)

We are excited for the 2010-11 school year, as we have several great, green initiatives planned for Welch. We are working with staff to continue the lunch room recycling efforts launched last year. We will officially kick it off on November 15th, America Recycles Day, and we will include fun activities as well as educational information. We are in need of volunteers to assist during all the lunch periods on November 15th. Please email us if you can help:[email protected] or [email protected]

Visit the following web site to take the recycling pledge for the America Recycles Day: http://www.kab.org/site/PageServer?pagename=ARD_Pledge

We Can Do It!One of the single best ways you can “go green” and reduce waste is to make your child’s lunch waste free and green. With some estimates reporting that schools accumulate 3.5 million pounds of lunchtime garbage every year (or 67 pounds per child per year…yikes!),it’s time to think about what our kids are and are not eating and throwing away, along with the packages in which their food is contained. Here are some easy tips to green up the lunch box.

Replace plastic bags with reusable containers and wraps. Bento lunch boxes are a great alternative.

Make lunches from scratch in order to lower your carbon footprint as well as to create a tasty and healthy lunch.

Pack lunches in reusable, PVC-free, and lead-free totes. Buy beverages in bulk, and pour into washable, non-leaching, BPA-free drink

containers. Stainless steel canteens are great for this. Use cloth napkins that can be washed and used again. It makes your kids feel grown

up, too. Encourage your kids to bring home the un-eaten food instead of throwing it away. This

will reduce waste as well as provide a gauge for how much you need to pack.

Here’s to a Green School Year!

On December 15th and 17th, Welch Elementary School will conduct Vision and Hearing Screenings. These screening tests are mandated by the Department of Public Health at specific times during a child’s educational experience. All first, second and third grade students will have their hearing screened. Second grade students will participate in vision screenings. If your child wears glasses, please make sure they have them in school on testing day. Vision screening is not a substitute for a complete eye and vision evaluation by an eye doctor. Your child is not required to undergo this vision screening an optometrist or ophthalmologist has completed and signed a report form indicating that an examination has been administered within the previous 12 months and that evaluation is on file at the school. In addition, students with active Individualized Education Plans and students new to Indian Prairie School District 204, will have their vision and hearing screened.Vision and hearing screenings are not an option. If an examination report is not on file at the school for your child and your child is in one of the mandated age/grade/groups, he or she will be screened.Parents of students not in the required screening groups may request screening by calling 630-428-7200.

CLASS NEWS Third Grade News It’s hard to believe first quarter is over. We’re thankful for fall weather and for all the fun we had at the October Halloween parade and party! To everyone who was able to support our PTA by contributing to The Innisbrook fundraiser, we thank you! Field Trips, classroom magazines and Welch White Tiger Popcorn Day are just a few of the activities this fund raiser supports. We are very appreciative to all who participated. As we turn over a new leaf and head into second quarter we want to share some noteworthy Third Grade learning experiences.

Our reading themes “What a Team!” and “Friend to Grow With” are providing wonderful fiction and nonfiction texts for the students to gain better skills and strategies as readers. We are focusing on story sequence, summarizing, predictions, prefixes and suffixes. The children enjoy shar-ing their insights during guided-reading, small-group instruction. Com-pleting reading response journals, presenting book reports, and Acceler-ated Reader involvement are just a few ways third graders have grown as readers and writers. The classroom focus is narrative writing for second quarter. Our students will be learning how to communicate ideas, orga-nize their work, and use conventions in their written work. Our grammar focus will be various types of nouns and pronouns. Writer’s Workshop al-lows our students to have a portfolio of work in progress. Welch students are proving themselves to be creative writers.

The math unit, Linear Measurement and Area, will come to a close soon and students will begin learning about multiplication and division in Unit 4. We’re proud of their hard work! Practicing subtraction facts daily in the classroom and at home will continue to be a focus in the second quarter.

In science, third graders will be learning about bones and muscles. They will identify and investigate cells and the systems working within our bodies. We will learn how the skeletal system gives shape and support to our bodies. How many bones do we have in our bodies? All third grad-ers will soon know the answer to this question!

Which type of community would you prefer to live in: rural, suburban, or urban? The students will learn more about what it’s like to live in these three types of communities, both in the past and present day, as they explore the social studies textbook and projects.

Thank you for your continued involvement in the many details of your child’s educational experience at Welch Elementary School. We are look-ing forward to speaking with you at the November conferences!

Respectfully, The Third Grade Team

Fourth Grade News Fourth Grade is off to a wonderful start!

We started the year reading stories from our Lit-erature Anthology. The theme is ‘You Can Do It!’. The stories tell of people who faced and overcame challenges. We hope all fourth graders feel they can do it! Some classes also worked on owl-themed novel studies. The fourth graders are owl crazy at this time.

Our scientists have explored environmental factors. We grew terrariums, observed crickets, and discussed acid rain. The students’ most memorable activity was dissecting owl pellets. They each received an owl pellet to dissect and discover what

the owl had for dinner the night before! We also enjoyed an owl assembly on October 15th. S.O.A.R. (Save Our American Raptors) brought in rescued raptors to teach our students how these birds use their unique attributes to hunt and survive.

In social studies, we began the year with an over-view of the country in which we live. We then began discussing the five regions of the United States. The students are currently learning about the Northeast. We will be going to Naper Settlement on November 22nd to learn about our history and how pioneers settled our area.

Our writing focus this year will be covering the 6+1 traits as they enhance the writing process. Students are currently working on narrative pieces in Writing Workshop. Some of the skills needed for narrative writing are leads, paragraphs, sequencing and transi-tions. We think we may have a future author or two in our midst!

Last but not least, math has been fun! We started the year with geometry. The students learned about angles, lines, and types of shapes. Next up was our study of Numbers and Organizing Data. We all continue working on mastering our multiplication facts!

Remember fall conferences are coming up on Tues-day, November 2nd, Thursday, November 4th, and Wednesday, November 10th. If you did not sign up for a conference on Curriculum Night, please call to arrange one. We look forward to meeting you! -

Fifth Grade News It’s hard to believe that we have completed the first quarter of fifth grade! Students have adjusted well to the many challenges that face them at the beginning of a new school year. Students and teachers alike find their days and weeks passing very quickly!

Our building focus on literacy has provided our fifth graders with a variety of reading and literacy-based activities each day. Students may be reading stories from the anthology, participating in readers’ work-shop and conferencing with a teacher, engaging in a class novel study or focusing on a study of reading skills.

Fifth graders continue to practice their math facts through the Otter Creek program. Any additional practice that can be done at home will enable your students to master those facts more quickly. Through the Everyday Math curriculum, students have studied units on Number Theory and Estimation and Computation. Students will be moving into a unit on Geometry. Accelerated Math students are currently in unit three as well, which has a focus on variables, formulas and graphs. Students should have nightly math homework. If your child has completed their homework at school, please take the time to review it with them at home.

The unit in science for the first quarter is weather. Students have been engaged in a variety of activities that teach concepts related to the at-mosphere, air pressure, weather instruments, clouds, weather forecast-ing and severe weather events. Students have worked hard on creating a brochure focusing on a severe weather event or have been involved with a jigsaw research activity. Students have been introduced to note taking in science this quarter as well. This skill will continue to be practiced each quarter.

Students and teachers have had the opportunity to “break in” the brand new social studies materials this quarter! Explorers have been their main focus, and students have created some very impressive journals which they have had the opportunity to share with their classmates.

Fifth graders begin the year with descriptive writing which focuses on ideas and content, along with conventions. The next area of concentra-tion in writing is word choice. Teachers will use various vocabulary activities that will help students learn to vary word choice as they write. Persuasive writing will be a focus during the second quarter of fifth grade.

Students have done a great job of adjusting to the ever-changing fifth grade schedule. Please check in with your student every other week or so to make sure they have all the supplies they need. Pencils, especially, seem to have a way of disappearing! Thank you for all the support you have provided your child during the first quarter of school.
