Dear Nobles, Ladies and Friends of Moslah,

If you have not been active in Moslah, please think about becoming active

again. If you know someone who is not

active any longer, please call them and invite them back. Most of all, if you have family, friends or co-workers who would be interested please use the IAMRU application at beashrinernow.com/referral. There has never been an easier way to solicit membership. This works off of your smartphone or computer and can be finished in less than five minutes! The reason I am so passionate about reaching out to our friends, family and community about the Shrine and Masonry is we need new members but more importantly, they need us! This is part of my presentation to the Grand Masters Conference on Saturday May 19.

“In these uncertain times, Masonry offers stability in an unstable world and assurance in an unsure society. By close attention to the tenants of Freemasonry, especially truth, relief, and brotherly love, Masonry affords men and their families the gift of an even larger extended

family with which to celebrate victories and comfort in times of sadness. “

We have so many ways to enrich people’s lives. One of the ways was The Memorial Service on Sunday, May 20 at the Temple. It was a stunning example of the Moslah Shrine at its best. First, as Potentate, I requested all officers of the Uniformed Units and Clubs be in attendance or have an officer present if not serving a role in the ceremony. I want to thank the Units and Clubs for being there in support and preforming your leadership roles. Having more Shriners present was a tribute to the families attending. The Patrol, Bedouins, Legion of Honor and the sound and lighting crew were superb in their duties. Noble Bill Rhyan’s performance of Taps was also superb. We had the opportunity to honor the Chairman, Noble Ken Simons for thirty years of service to Moslah and the Memorial Service.

If all of what I described was not enough, the message this year from our Chaplin, Noble Joe Williams was a moving tribute and inspiration to our soul. His address titled “The Train of Life” (a copy is printed later in the newsletter) gave us all a look at our world in a better perspective. Did I mention tears and laughter were included? Our Chaplin, Joe Williams is a great Conductor for all of us. Thank you, Joe!

From the Assistant RabbanSpecial thanks to the Lake Granbury Shrine Club for their extraordinary efforts on Saturday,

May 5, raising funds for our hospitals. Their efforts raised more than $12,600, a record for their participation. Your Divan, Business Manager John Henderson and Hospital Fund Drive Chairman Trace Brooks were all in attendance and impressed with our hard-working Granbury colleagues. After several hours of working the streets, we were grateful for the hospitality as Bob Muzzy cooked burgers and provided a place to rest. My fez-burn is just now starting to peel away.

Later that evening, the Divan stopped by the Ad Sales kickoff for the Bedouins, the first group to get started on Circus Ad sales. They have lofty goals for the Circus this year and their enthusiasm will be hard to beat.

On June 9 and 10, the DFW GI Joe Club will be hosting their annual GI Joe and Action Figure Show at the Grapevine Convention Center. This group has been gracious enough to allow Moslah to have a booth at the show the last few years to get the word out about Shriners and our hospitals. They have also been generous in making contributions to our Hospital Fund Drive efforts. I urge you to take some time on Sunday, June 10, after returning victorious from TSA in Tyler, to visit their show and wear your fez. More information can be found at https://showhost1.wixsite.com/dfwjoeshow.

I would like to thank all the Nobles and ladies who participated in our Hospital Fund Drive collections in April and May. With the increased cost of patient healthcare and particularly Moslah’s cost in providing transportation for our local hospital patients, we need every able Noble to help. I look forward to our Fall Street Collections on October 20 in the outlying areas. If you can help, please contact me or HFD Chairman Trace Brooks.

Yours in the Faith, Jeff Eaton

From the Chief RabbanNobles and Ladies,Did you blink? If you did, you missed it. This year is flying by, in a few weeks we will be at TSA in Tyler. And

then we have the summer break, and before you know it will be Circus time again. Man, oh man time is flying by. Before it’s over I would like to remind you of a few items that we are still working on.

First is our family games night to celebrate our anticipated victories at TSA on June 14. This a great opportunity for everyone to get together to celebrate and enjoy what it means to be Moslah with our friends and family.

The first Moslah corn hole tournament will be held on July 28 at the temple. It will be an all-day event starting at 10:00am and it is guaranteed to be a lot of fun.

The Sportsman spectacular continues to be a very important fundraiser for Moslah and it will be held on August 18. It has all my favorite things in one place: silent auction, live auction, guns, BBQ and beer. I hope you join us with some of your friends for chances to win some spectacular items.

We have many other events planned in the fall that we will update after the summer. I just wanted you to know that we are staying busy this summer with planned activates at the Shrine. I would also like to remind all you nobles that the Circus ad campaign has begun. The Circus is the number one fundraiser for Moslah. The commissions from the ad sales, and the block ticket sales can help the units manage their budgets. We must make this Circus year one of the best. We can if we all work together. If anyone has any questions regarding ad sales, or block tickets, or even sponsorship opportunities, you can call me anytime.

YITF,Moe Rahmeh, Chief Rabban

As we approach Imperial Session in July, an air of change is in the wind for our hospital system. The Joint Boards which operate the system retained a consulting firm to analyze our efficiencies of operation. Some of the results are now in.

First, we have several hospitals which simply do not have the in-patient volume to maintain certification and operate in a cost effective manner. These include Twin Cities in Minnesota, Tacoma and Tampa. Additionally, providing acute burn care treatment in Boston and Cincinnati has been found to be cost inefficient.

Evaluations are underway to determine how Shriners Health System can continue to provide our services to children in these areas in a more efficient manner even if it means not having brick and mortar facilities of our own. Likely solutions may include partnering with other medical institutions with our financial support and Shriners branding.

From our local perspective, the good news is that our Galveston and Houston Hospitals are sound. In fact, Galveston is likely to see an expansion in services as it absorbs acute burn care patients which would otherwise have gone to Boston or Cincinnati.

If you have questions or concerns, always feel free to ask your Hospital Board Members: Mike Wallach for Galveston and Richard Baker and David Henderson for Houston.

As a final caveat, this could all change at Imperial Session in July! Details to follow!– Mike Wallach

Life is like a journey on a train... with its stations... with changes of routes... and with accidents! We board this train when we are born and our parents are the ones who get our ticket. We believe they will always travel on this train with us.

However, at some station our parents will get off the train, leaving us alone on this journey.

As time goes by, other passengers will board the train, many of whom will be significant - our siblings, friends, children, and even the love of our life.

Many will get off during the journey and leave a permanent vacuum in our lives. Many will go so unnoticed that we won’t even know when they vacated their seats and got off the train ! This train ride will be full of joy, sorrow, fantasy, expectations, hellos, good-byes, and farewells. A good journey is helping, loving, having a good relationship with all co-passengers... and making sure that we give our best to make their journey comfortable. The mystery of this fabulous journey is : We do not know at which station we ourselves are going to get off. So, we must live in the best way - adjust, forget, forgive and offer the best of what we have. It is important to do this because when the time comes for us to leave our seat... we should leave behind beautiful memories for those who will continue to travel on the train of life.” Thank you for being one of the important passengers on my train... don’t know when my station will come... don’t want to miss saying:

“Thank you”

Steven E. Wolf, M.D., is no stranger to Shriners Hospital for

Children — Galveston, where he spent nine years of his

career completing his post-graduate training, and later serving

as Shriners Hospitals for Children assistant chief of staff from

2000 to 2004.

Giving credit to his predecessor, David Herndon, M.D., Wolf

says he will be “following in giant footsteps.” And, while his

number one priority is to continue leading the world in

pediatric burn care, he also hopes to discover new

opportunities. “We want to be on the forefront of developing

new technologies, and I have a long history of research and funding to do that,” he said.

Dr. Wolf also wishes to expand Shriners Hospitals' reach nationally and internationally. He explains that

the Galveston Shriners Hospital will carry on the Shriners Hospitals mission and help more children

receive, not only life-saving, acute burn care, but also help patients who, through reconstructive care, can

live better lives.

The Shriners, according to Wolf, "are the greatest philanthropic organization in the world, period! They

have made a difference in millions of children’s lives over the years. Those kids have gone on to live

great lives in the face of very significant challenges that no one would have thought they could do.”

In fact, witnessing this firsthand has impacted how Dr. Wolf approaches his own patient care. “The goal is

to see every patient how they will look three or four years from now, not what they are going to look like

tomorrow, although that’s important too,” says Wolf. So, he often tells his patients, “We want to get you to

where you can do whatever in the world you want to do. And… we’re going to get there!”

Although Dr. Wolf did not originally intend to become a burn surgeon, this former rugby player has since

adopted a very aggressive approach: “My goal, and the goal of burn care, is to reach the point of no scar,

no pain and no deaths – zero for every burned patient,” he says. And, while he acknowledges that burn

care has come a long way, he states, “We still have a long way to go. That’s our vision!”

Greetings and salutations from the Solid Gold Patrol. We continued Drill Practice for TSA through the month

of May, with Past President’s night on May 14, Past Captain’s night on May 21, and the Patrol Family night May 23. Temple functions included providing the Honor Guard for the Moslah Memorial Service on May 20.

Now June is upon us. Drill Practice is done, and there is nothing left to do but to go compete.

Summer activities will include Circus Ads kickoff on July 19 and the Military Retreat July 27.

If you want more information, do not hesitate to contact me.

– David Houston, Publicity Chairman, [email protected]

We are entering the second half of 2018 and it is important to remember to notify the Illustrious Sir and Divan several months ahead of time if you want them to attend your events or meetings.

Also, remember to ask for permission regarding dates before making plans. Temple events always take priority. Get your events approved and on the Temple calendar, so you are not disappointed.

This is especially true for the end of year events like Christmas Parties, etc. Keep in mind the number of invitations they receive, and the fact that they want to support everyone, makes timely invitations necessary.

Yours in the faith,John Henderson, Business Manager

All Unit, Club & Association Leaders

PatrolMystic WheelsNobles and Ladies....

TSA is upon us and what a festive time it is! Both Mystic Wheels drill teams are progressing nicely in competition prep. Focus and concentration is in abundance! We are kicking the tires and lighting the fires.

We compete Friday morning in Tyler and if we can assist your unit’s competition in any way just let us know. We’ll be glad to help out.

Always a pleasure to participate in the Hospital Fund Drive. Great to meet the public and get the FEZ in front of them. Again, we had great comments from everyone about the wonderful job done at Shriner’s hospitals. This is indeed what it is all about.

We invite all Moslah nobles and ladies to Visit / Like our Facebook Page for even more details of events and pictures/videos.

And hey Moslah Noble, are you and your family looking for a unit home? Would you like to join a great group of Masonic brothers, make lasting friendships, enjoy life, and be part of a winning team? Do you enjoy the thrill of competition? Like to participate in parades and public events? Well, the Mystic Wheels is the group for you.

We are a family-oriented go kart group with the ladies and kids at all our events! We ride inexpensive, traditional, open wheel go karts that are fun and easy to drive. In addition, we are very active in all temple activities and blue lodge activities.

Call Brett Wiesner 817 360-7585, Bob Roth 703 509-7773 or Bill Jones 817 608-6678 for information and a visit. Come check us out - we just may be your unit home...Still the LARGEST and friendliest motorized unit in Texas!

The Racin’ Masons

GolfThe Golf Unit will be heading to Tyler

Texas for TSA June 6-9th. We just finished placing 3rd at TSGA which was held in Galveston, and members are dialing up their game weekly getting ready for a great showing at TSA representing Moslah. On June 14 we will be attending TSA Victory Party at the Temple celebrating all the Units awards won by Moslah.

As we go dark for the summer, keep in mind we have lots to do coming up in the fall as we get ready for Moslah’s Shrine Circus. We will be getting our packets for the Ad Sales renewals in the next few weeks so we can get a great start to beat our sales from last’s year.

Car-Vettes

Directors

WE CAR-VETTES RIDE SO SHRINER CHILDREN CAN WALK

Car-Vettes, It’s June again... really?? Be sure to keep your grass mowed and your air conditioner working. We’re almost half way through the year and moving right along. Hope you are having a great year and lots of fun!!!

Let’s start this month off with remembering D-Day on June 6. It was the beginning of the end of WW2. (Maybe you can get a feel-good by re-watching Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan, The Longest Day and/or Where Eagles Dare?) We also have TSA in Tyler on the 6th thru the 9th, Flag Day, as well as (my beloved) Army Day on the 14th, Father’s Day on the 17th, Emancipation Day on the 19th and of course American Eagle Day on the 20th. Looks like another good month.Speaking of TSA, we Car-Vettes are looking for another trophy this year. To the best of my knowledge, we have always won a trophy in TSA competition, that’s a pretty cool accomplishment! This year, we are staying at the same hotel as our Shriner brothers, the Bedouins, which should help guarantee a good time for all!

Since I have your attention, here is a heads up notice for the 4th of July parade in Arlington. This really is a great parade, attended by over 50,000 happy onlookers scattered over the route; a perfect opportunity to show the fez to some of the fine folks who gave us so much money on the street corners. Your Car-vettes will be there again and we REALLY hope to see some other Moslah units there also. I mean, after all, Arlington is our friendly right next-door neighbor! After the parade, hightail it back home to your air conditioner, be with family and friends, break out the BBQ fixings and be careful with the fireworks. Whatever you choose to do, enjoy our country’s 242nd celebration of American independence from England! Also, for long range planning, remember the Sportsman Spectacular on 8/18 and the Moslah Margaritaville Casino Bus Trip on 8/26 thru 8/27 to Bossier city.

There is another good parade that I think you would enjoy and that is the Crowley Celebration of Freedom parade. This grand event is to express gratitude and support for the U.S. military and their families. This year, it’s scheduled for the 7th of July @ 10:00 AM. This is another good parade that we normally go to, and again we REALLY hope to see some other Moslah units there. If you aren’t just terribly busy, and want to go watch the parade, grab your fez and check it out, it’s pretty good. The staging area is at the Crowley High School.

You do know that you can join two units at the same time and double your fun? Sure, it’s going to take some of your “do nothing” time, but all of the units need you and you just may find that you really do enjoy the camaraderie each of them have to offer. Your lady most likely will share in the enjoyment with you since so many of our Shrine family activities include them. Don’t forget to check with

your Masonic buddies about joining Moslah, some of them probably would like to have fun too!

Betcha didn’t know... • 78% of NFL players are bankrupt two years after finishing their careers, while 60% of NBA players are bankrupt within five years of leaving the league. (Wow, all of that money gone...poof!) • Slaves in Texas were not free until over two years after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. It was issued on September 22, 1862, which had an effective date of January 1, 1863. Lincoln declared all slaves to be freed that were in the Confederate States in rebellion. Since Texas was not a Confederate battleground and therefore not in rebellion, its slaves were not affected by the proclamation! Then, on June 18, 1865, Union Army General Gordon Grainger arrived in Galveston with 2,000 federal troops to occupy Texas on behalf of the federal government. Standing on the balcony of the Ashton Villa, the General read aloud the contents of General Order #3, announcing the total emancipation of slavery. Thus... Juneteenth!• Elephants are the only animals that can’t jump? (OK, so that would be a good thing.) An ostrich’s eye is larger than it’s brain. ( Hey, I know some people like that.) Starfish have no brains. (I know some people like that too.)

Nobles, if you are looking to join a unit that will give you a big reason to be proud and have camaraderie and enjoyment for your entire family, look no further. Moslah Car-Vettes is the one for YOU! Yes sir, you too can proudly wear one of our bright yellow unit shirts and drive one of the classy looking little yellow cars (it’s a specialized grown up go-cart). Just join our unit and get involved with our activities. We offer a positive, friendly and fun family environment to enrich your Shrine experience. If any Noble would like more information or to test drive one of our cool looking yellow cars, all you have to do is let us know. Don’t be bashful; you can contact President Frank Treadaway at (817) 832-5964, Colonel Cecil LeMond at (817) 247-0246, or really, any of our members. We are a VERY proud bunch of fellas and will be happy to talk to you about our unique unit. – Chuck Huddleston, Car-Vettes

Flying FezWhat’s Happening with Moslah Flying Fez.

Nobles of the Flying Fez, the Shriner patients we transport to and from the doctor, hospitals and dental clinic appointments, all have their dreams and hopes. This brings us to our cause: safely transporting this precious cargo so our hospital staff can work their talent and help fulfill these dreams. Doesn’t it make all of us feel pretty special to be a part of the “World’s Greatest Philanthropy,” Shriners Hospitals for Children.

We had occasion on Sunday, April 29, 2018 to celebrate Commander Brandon Reese’s birthday and at the same time honor our Past Commanders and their Ladies with a dinner at the Ole South Pancake House on University Dr. Everyone enjoyed a delicious meal, great fellowship and good time. These past Commanders and their Ladies have given their time, talent and means to this association to ensure we continue to “Roll for the Children”. They may have the title as Past Commander, but each still is a vital and very much appreciated part of this association. Where would we be without the knowledge, experience and foresight they bring? We thank each of you for your continued service and dedication.

Past Commander BJ Young, 2017, was presented his Past Commander plaque by Illustrious Sir Jeff Barcafar, Potentate of Moslah Temple and Commander Brandon Reese, 2018. If BJ keeps getting awards, he’s going to need an additional wall somewhere. Something to think about Mary.

The Flying Fez wanted to recognize a very special and hard-working lady who has and will continue to go above and beyond the normal. She does so much for the association and as a token of our appreciation, Lady Lena Merk was presented a card signed by the members and a dozen long stem roses, presented to her by Illustrious Sir Jeff Barcafar, Potentate and Commander Brandon Reese. Thank you Lena, for all you do for the association.

Hope everyone enjoyed the Moslah Shrine Bingo Night and LOS Bake Sale. Thank you to the volunteers who delivered the Mother’s Day flowers for Darrell Whitsell Florist

and Moslah Temple, a very good fundraiser for the temple. It’s been more than 100 years since President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Mother’s Day a national celebration in May, 1914! Happy Mother’s Day to all Mothers.

Hope you were able to attend the Shrine Memorial Service to support the families of deceased Nobles. We pray that God will continue to strengthen and console each family member and friend.

Hope to see a lot of faces at our Stated Meeting on May 21, 2018. Even though the Temple will have no Shrine or Flying Fez stated meetings in June, July or August, we will continue to do what we do best: transporting our children to the doctor, dentist and hospital appointments.Remember:

BedouinsBedouins Out and About!

TSA Tyler: June 6th through June 9th This year the Texas Shrine Association will be meeting in Tyler,

Texas. The Bedouins are going in force to bring home the trophy for the best large band once again. We have some new tricks up our sleeves for this year’s performance. You don’t want to miss it! So, come out and join us and cheer on your Oriental Band!

The Bedouins aren’t stopping there, we will be keeping the fun going when we return from Tyler. Come join us on Thursday, June 14 at the Masonic Ballroom for the Victory Games night from 6:00 to 9:30. We will be joining in the celebration of all our Units’ victories at TSA.

The fun just never seems to stop for the Moslah Bedouins in 2018! We will be continuing our monthly Bedouin Nights Out with something a little different for the month of June. We will be heading out to the Ft. Worth Botanical Gardens on June 23, to attend the concert for the music of Journey, backed by the Ft. Worth Symphony Orchestra. This is a great event that has been going on for years, and if you’ve never been you should definitely look into it. The band does a great show of so many memorable tunes from the band Journey, with fireworks at the end of every show. It’s going to be a great event and lots of fun and fellowship with a great many Bedouins rocking out the night!

As you can see, the Bedouins are in for an exciting month of June! – Caliph Chris

The TMRC Shrine Club Swings to the Music

TMRC Shrine Club sponsored its Second Annual Shrine Club Dance on the evening of 28 April 2018 at the Texas Masonic Retirement Center in Arlington, Texas.

The newest MOSLAH Shrine Club, TMRC Shrine Club, conducted its second annual fundraiser in support of the Galveston Shrine Burn Hospital on the evening of 28 April 2018 at the TMRC in Arlington, TX. An enjoyable evening of music of the Big Band Era was provided by the Nobles of Note Band, “A Big Band with a Big Heart for the Kids”. The Attendees included TMRC residents and guests from Moslah & Hella Shrines and other area residents. Those who danced appeared to have a very good time, with many staying until the very

end. Others came just to listen to the Forties and Fifties music. During the intermission, Past Potentate of KAREM Shrine, Greg (Snake) McEwen, Chairman of the Hospital Board at the at Galveston Shrine Hospital, spoke eloquently about the children and the advances in care provided by the Shriner’s Hospitals, followed by the first public viewing of a newly released video by the patients from the Burn Hospital. Following the speakers presentations, a collection was taken to support the Texas Galveston Shrine Burn Hospital, resulting in $1000.00 donations for burn care.

Potentate’s ColumnContinued from page 2

As the weekend continued to be a tribute to Moslah, we all took part in a very special Golden Trowel Award. Our Chief Rabban, Noble Moe Rahmeh received this award from his Lodge, Panther City #1183. The officers of Panther City preformed the ceremony with excellence. That said, I would say the pressure was on because the Grand Master of Texas, Most Worshipful Tommy Chapman was in attendance. Moe’s word of thanks and the Grand Master’s tribute continue to make a book of all the reasons to be Masons and Shriners. So don’t forget, use the beashirinernow/referal app and share what we do!

Summer is here and we get a chance to spend time with family and friends. As the Temple goes dark (but not without activities) enjoy vacations and relaxing at home. Don’t forget the July Cornhole Tournament, August Sportsmen Spectacular and Casino Bus Trip!

It is TSA time as we travel to Tyler, June 7-9. No doubt we will bring winning trophies home for the celebration at the Temple on June 14. Best of luck to all in all of the competitions. Be safe in your travels and have a fun summer!

Yours in the Faith,Jeff Barcafar, Potentate 2018
