Can we join in the psalmist’s trust in the compassion of the Lord? For Paul, the human body is a temple of the Lord, a positive image. It is also fragile and susceptible to the opposite of the spirit, a negative image. When Paul uses the word “flesh,” he doesn’t mean literally our physical bodies. Rather, by “flesh,” he means that aspect of human nature that is subject to sinfulness and corruptibility. But the life of the spirit has been given to all who believe in the risen Lord. In fact, it is through the Resurrection of the Lord that a new spiritual life is new possible. John’s story of the raising of Lazarus offers us hope and con- solation in the face of death. The grief of Jesus, Martha, and Mary shows us that the Lord understands and shares in our human grief at the death of our loves ones. At the same time, Jesus teaches that, through the power his Father has given him, he has power over death. Ultimately he will teach us through his own Death and Resurrection that we can trust in the promise of eternal life. What examples of death to life do you find in the readings? What details in the Lazarus story do you find comforting? How do you understand Jesus’ statement, “I am the resurrec- tion and the life”?

Fifth Sunday Of Lent

In today’s First Reading, the prophet Ezekiel delivers God’s words to his covenant people, using a graphic metaphor to illustrate God’s desire and power to give them life. The graves of the dead will be opened and the dead will rise up. Furthermore, all those in exile will be brought safely home. By these acts the people will know that their God has power over life and death. The psalmist intertwines a plea for redemption with an affir-mation of trust in the Lord’s mercy. The psalm’s penitential tone makes it particularly fitting for Lent. What might “the depths” mean? That vagueness allows the psalm to fit the needs of any person, for at times any of us might feel helpless and overwhelmed-wanting to cry out. John’s story of the raising of Lazarus offers us hope and con-solation in the face of death. How do you understand Jesus’ statement, “I am the resurrec-tion and the life”?

God’s love for his people is astounding. Despite our sin, he continually seeks to draw us to himself and forgive

every “iniquity and transgression and sin” (Exodus 34:7). There is no thirst of the so consuming as the desire for pardon. The sense of its bestowal is the starting point of all goodness. It comes bringing with it, if not the fresh-ness of innocence, yet a glow of inspiration that nerves feeble hands for hard tasks, a fire of hope that lights anew the old high ideal, so that it stands before the eye in clear relief, beckoning us to make it our own. To be able to look into God’s face and know with the knowledge of faith that there is nothing between the soul can know. Whatev-er else pardon may be it is above all things admission into full fellowship with God.
