VISION TOUCH IN

Volume 59 August 21, 2020

A little over a week ago, I was back in my office at the church after having undergone surgery almost two weeks before. I started in on the piles on my desk. But my mind was wondering forward to Sunday. I had not planned three weeks ahead to when I would return to the pulpit, so I was looking for inspiration. I had a fleeting thought, “I make all things new.” Okay. And then it was as if a voice was whispering in my ear. “I make all things new.” As I sorted through the rubble of previous weeks, as I was coming across stuff from the last several months, as I dug to the bottom of the pile of articles and snippets on how to lead during a pandemic, as the weight of all that shifted to the recycle bin and the smaller keep file – I heard the voice louder this time, “I make all things new.” I stopped what I was doing and opened my Bible to Revelation 21: 5 – “See, I am making all things new.” I let the words sink in. I am making all things new…not just some distant future. I am making all things new – today. And then I did it. I surrendered. Okay Lord, I am listening. You make all things new. You take our difficult yesterdays and our tumultuous todays. You make our tomorrows new. Hope-filled. Joyous. Life-giving. And then I prayed, “Lord, let it be with me. Make me new.” You know what? I have experienced a change. My spirit has been different. I awake each day with a renewed sense of purpose. I am challenging myself to react to life’s disappointments differently. Rather than seeing all the challenges of life right now as one big onslaught – I am stepping back and taking each piece one at a time and giving to God that which is God’s…those parts I have no control over. I am feeling a bit refreshed. My mind is clearer. My tolerance level is going up. And get this … I don’t feel as grumpy. What?! There has got to be a thanks be to God out there somewhere! How about you? Are you ready for a new tomorrow? I can’t promise that my course will be yours. But I can promise this. God is making all things new. No more crying. No more sorrows. No more pain. Alright, we might not experience the fullness of that promise in our lifetime, but God is working with us to bring change to this hurting confused world. God desires that “there’ll be joy and laughter and peace ever after. Tomorrow – just you wait and see.” * God longs for dreams to come true. Dreams that allow all equal footing to pursue happiness and safe passage in this life that we are living today.** The kingdom of God is the ultimate tomorrow. It’s the goal of history and the reward of the faithful. But between today and that tomorrow are the nearer tomorrows where we can find hope and joy. New life. Today. Thanks be to God.***

Thank you for the Color the World with Kindness Drive Thru:

Sunday, August 9, the Education Committee hosted a drive-thru for kids of all ages to come by and grab a fun goodie bag packed full of things ranging from a service project to a science project to a snack! Thank you to the planning team: Megan Peoples, Jessica Scott, Nikki Dankenbring, Cheryl Werth and Tammy Dees. About 65 children, youth and their par-ents/care givers drove thru to pick up their bag. Since then we have given out all but one of the remaining bags from the church office. 80 children

and youth have received a bag. Each bag contained an activity centered around Kindness and prayer. A box of crayons was given to each student to help them perform an act of kindness in the name of Christ. They were invited to draw an encouraging picture for a resident of Eaglecrest care center. These will be collected at the next drive thru. 101 ways to pray was included to help us remember we can talk to God anytime, anywhere. A science experiment involving skittles was offered with enough skittles for a treat later. All items were packed while wearing masks and gloves.

Be Kind Backpack Blessing Drive Thru: Sunday August 30th, 4-5pm. Come for a Backpack Blessing*, Bag Tag, Ice Cream Treat and more. There is something for children and youth. We have some fun things to help start the new school year. Please spread the word! We will be open while supplies last. If you prepared a drawing for Eaglecrest from our last drive thru, bring it along! We will deliver it for you. *A Backpack Blessing is offered the same day, during worship at 9am, Oakdale Park, weather permitting. Be sure to Come to the drive thru too —We don’t want you to miss out on the ice cream and the rest of the fun! We want to add to the Bag Tag and the bless-ing!

Recycling Containers to the Emergency Aid

Food Bank: The Food Bank can always use repurposed containers in which to separate large donations of non-perishable items (beans, rice, laundry soaps, etc.) They can only use 32 oz. and smaller, not the gallon tubs or similar containers. Please be certain that your containers are clean. With the various closures around the community, you are welcome to take your items directly to the Food Bank, north west side door, 255 S. Chicago St., Salina. If it is more convenient, you can still put it in the Mission Closet at Trinity, east hallway and it will be taken periodically.

Thank you for your continued support.

Salina Shares: Friend to Friend — Last fall a Leadership Salina team contacted me about a program they were initiating, in an effort to connect people. The premise was to bring friendship and companionship to senior citizens, or those living alone, with visits, calls and cards from September through December. This was in an effort to help them through the holidays, a season that can be very difficult for many. None of us could have predicted the pandemic that has changed how we do things in 2020. However, the need may be greater now than ever for seniors to have contact from people who care. If you would be interested in adopting a new friend for Sep-tember-December, please email us at [email protected] or call us at 785-452-2929 and let us know. Beginning in September, you will also be able to visit our website at www.salinashares.com and download a Volunteer Form. We will pair you with a senior who has requested a friend. For this year, we are suggesting calls and cards, instead of visits to their homes. Meeting them at the Senior Center for lunch on a weekday is also an option, as distancing can be

managed. Christmas Plans — We are excited about what we are envisioning to help our neighbors in need this Christmas season. We do not have the green light yet with a crucial piece of the puzzle, but are expecting to hear in the next couple weeks. For now, will you be thinking about how you, your family, your church, your business, your service organization, etc. can contribute? For instance, is there a church who would be willing to donate 25 4 foot Christmas trees and ornaments? A business that would be willing to sponsor a shopper or donate gift cards? A group that would like to create themed gift baskets? A salon that would be willing to donate nail polish, shampoo, or hair tools? Will you keep your eyes open for great deals on children's pajamas, fragrance sets, underwear, gifts for tweens or teens? Is there a group willing to purchase or put together small "fix it" sets with handheld tools? These are just a few of the ideas we have to stock a store. It would truly be a community project - a clear example of how well Salina really does share, and a wonderful way for families to shop for their own items with dignity. Stay tuned for more details!

Chancel Choir: All choir members and families are invited to attend an informal outdoor meeting on August 30th at 7:00 pm in the east parking lot or lawn of the church. This will be a chance to get together (social distancing with masks) and discuss what may be happening, including a timeline for a start. I am planning on having ice cream and toppings so that we can have a Sundae Sunday. This will be served to you ( I may need some volunteers to help). We will make sure that every-one is healthy with temperature checks. Bring a chair for outside. ** If for some reason the weather i9sn’t good we will move into the Family Life Center or Jesus Gym if you prefer. Darrel Dees

Why We Are Called United Methodists -written by Fran Coode Walsh, United Methodist Communications

There have been many nicknames for the band of believers who followed the lead of John and Charles Wesley in their early ministry in England: Enthusiasts, Sacramentarians, Bible Moths, Methodists. Their methods, values, and tradition laid the groundwork for what would become The United Methodist Church, 240 years after John and Charles Wesley began their Holy Club at college.

On April 23, 1968, Bishop Reuben H. Mueller, of The Evangelical United Brethren Church, and Bishop Lloyd C. Wicke, of The Methodist Church, joined hands at the General Conference in Dallas, Texas. They declared "Lord of the Church, we are united in Thee, in Thy Church and now in The United Methodist Church."

A new denomination was born and a new logo was created to represent this coming together. A traditional symbol—the cross—was linked with a single flame with dual tongues of fire. This ties The United Methodist Church to God through Christ (cross) and the Holy Spirit (flame). Most church members know that the symbol is a sign that "this is a place where United Methodists gather." But not everyone recognizes how, and why, it is important to use the denomination's full name.

The moniker is a merger of the names of the mostly German Evangelical United Brethren Church and the Methodist Church. Not using the denomination's full name can feel hurtful to some members.

The Rev. Alfred T. Day, head of the Archives and History agency, notes: "If your lineage to become a United Methodist today has been through the Methodist Episcopal strain, you're in the majority because the United Brethren and the Evangelical Associations by numbers are much smaller groups. So, it's easy for you in the majority to think of yourself as Methodist and claim that heritage. But if you're from the minority--and then that small heritage is combined into the larger heritage--and the only way that you get to claim your name is the word 'United' and somebody drops that name off, that kind of leaves you without a name, that kind of forgets your history."

Another meaning of united in the name speaks to the fuller inclusion of black churches. Even though the Methodist Episcopal Church had re-united in 1939 after being divided on the issue of slavery, African American congregations were still segregated into a separate Central Jurisdiction. In 1968, that segregation ended.

Day explains, "The United name also represents a coming together of black Methodists and white Methodists in the same conference, with the same preachers, with the same bishops, as opposed to segregated conferences as well. So, if you leave the name 'United' off you're leaving off both a significant piece and powerful part of the naming of who we are."

That newly formed United Methodist Church became one of the largest Protestant churches in the world with 12.4 million members today. And the cross and flame logo created in 1968 still represents that body, a body united in the goal to make disciples of Christ for the transformation of the world.

"Have you ever typed 'untied' Methodist Church?" asks Day. "There isn't that much difference on the keyboard between 'untied' and 'United' Methodist Church, but boy, oh boy, are there miles of difference in the story of how we get from one to the other."
