Shipping companies say West Coast ports, including those in Los Angeles and Long Beach, could

shut down if a new labor contract isn’t reached with dockworkers.

Shipping companies all but closed West Coast ports over the long Presidents Day weekend, a move

that the union contended was intended to pressure dockworkers into agreeing to a contract.

A flotilla of ships — filled with cars, electronics, clothes and other goods from Asia — have

anchored off the coast waiting for the docks to clear. Both sides blame each other for the severe

traffic jam.
