Why Historian?
You can’t improve what you can’t measure!
Government Regulations in many industries REQUIRE data!
Manufacturers are often asked for a “birth certificate” on their product
Your “process” often is where you have big Energy spends
Again, if you can’t measure, you can’t improve that spend!
You may need to review historical process information WAY after product was made, so it can’t be temporary!
The answer is you need a Historian!
You need to get slow and HIGH speed data
Reliable, uninterruptable
Getting data OUT must be easy
You need to store it for LONG periods of time
You want to RECORD your
process data and review it
back at any time!

Plant wide Data Storage Solution
SQLHISTORIAN
Time Series vs. Relational Data Storage
Time Series Database
Use to store process data over a period
of time
Pressure, temperature, etc.
Stores events with value and timestamp
Optimized data storage and archive
capability to store only what’s required
Retrieve large some of data efficiently
that may span weeks/months/years
10
Relational Database
Use to store process and production data as records and
relationships: Products, recipes, units, machines, orders, order lines, batches, etc.
Add Context To Time Series Data (UPM) Moving away from a flat data structure to an organizational structure
Link time series data to assets
Event Framing Store events like: Batches (full S88 model), shifts, material flow, alarm
and events

After Compression
After Exception
(Dead banding)
Raw Data
Data Source(DCS, PLC, etc.)
Historian Server
Interface node
Time-Series Optimized Data Store
11
You can typically expect a database reduction in size from 1/5 to 1/10
compared to uncompressed SQL database

Historian Interfaces
Interfaces
Connectivity to RA and 3rd party devices on the plant floor
250+ standard interfaces available
Interfaces allow historical data storage in a standard process
Key features
Buffering
Exception testing
Tag definition
Security per tag basis

Simple Deployment and Configuration Saves Time and Money
Premier Integration to FactoryTalk
Pre configured: Data sources, databases, systems
Auto Discovery / Auto Configuration
Standardization of code and data structures can get systems up and running quicker
Configuration Rules
Can make deployment repeatable
When a similar skid, system, line is deployed the data collection can be configured by repeating the previous configuration.

Reduce Total Cost of Ownership
FactoryTalk Historian Site Edition (SE):
Customers only pay for device based points
Customers do NOT pay for derived points such as equations and statistical totalizers
This method has two major advantages:
Optimized Historian has between 3-5 times as many derived points as device points
Easier to estimate the total cost of a system

More granular data
Data at higher speeds
Single machine historian
Reduce network dependency
Improve reliability
Solid-state data collection
No computer / OS to maintain
No moving parts
Remote data capture

Automatic correlation of Live Data and Historian tags
Historian and Live Data tags are linked if they reference the same data point in the controller
Makes reporting completely transparent to the underlying data source – you only need to know the Live Data tag (logical) for a
data value
Cross correlation when using distributed historian solution
When tags are historized in multiple historians, the system can find the best source of information needed for a report / trend
Optimized Performance – Server Side Data Aggregation
Data aggregation is now performed at the server (e.g. Summary roll up by hour)
Significantly reduces the calculation loads on the VantagePoint EMI Server
Allows for processing of aggregations at the best performing server

Data Access (OLEDB, JDBC)
OLE DB Provider, JDBC
Allows for rich functionality in interfacing 3rd party systems
to FT Historian
OLE DB can make the Historian “look” like a Relational
Database
Allows customers to develop applications on top of
Historian
But still “leave” the data where it is
No need for transferring data to other databases

Allows for standard connectivity from
the Historian for both real-time data
(DA) and historical data (HDA)
Connects with 100s of OPC clients
