Inala Police: Student Awards

It is wonderful to have our Inala Police adopt-a-cops Belinda and Simon involved in our

school community as they continue to encourage our students to do their best always.

Recently the Inala Police presented some special awards to one student from each class who

was nominated by their class teacher. These awards acknowledged students who are

excellent role models for their peers, are a caring and empathetic friend, a positive team

member and has regular attendance at school. Congratulations to all students who were

recognised to receive an award.

Principal’s Piece…..

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Sometimes I feel like I’m always saying that it’s the end of term and we wish everyone a safe and happy holiday. The school years fly by more and more quickly and now we only have one term left and will be starting to plan for the 2018 school year in the very near future.

Transfers will be out at the end of this week and will be announced early next term. While we don’t expect any transfers out, we have a number of vacancies for next year and are expecting a number of transfers in. Mrs Hurdle has recently retired after a period of leave and we wish her all the best for the next phase of her life. We also welcome Mr Graham Paull, who is joining the team as our HPE teacher for the remainder of the year. Mrs Middleton will be taking leave for Term Four and Ms Peters will be teaching 5A Wednesday – Friday for the remainder of the year.

I was lucky enough to coach and manage the interschool volleyball team during the recent round of interschool sport. I was very proud of our Serviceton South kids, who played well and improved their skills tremendously. I will be continuing volleyball during the lunch break next term, although not competitively. We had many students not playing sport who wanted to come and have a go. A big thanks to Anthony for assisting me with scoring and doing a pretty good job of umpiring the junior games when he wasn’t playing himself.

During Term Three each year, we serialise the School Annual Report for members of our school community. The 2016 School Annual Report can be found in full on the school website. This week’s inclusion continues information about the school’s social climate.

Parent and community engagement All new enrolments meet with the Principal prior to enrolment. This enables us to get to know students and place them in the most appropriate class, as well as provide information to parents and caregivers, and answer any questions about the school. Vietnamese, Samoan and African language Teacher Aides are available to interpret during these conversations, and a tele-interpreter is available for other languages.

Parents and caregivers are requested to attend an initial parent information session each year, and thereafter meet with teachers twice per year to focus on the strengths and future needs of their child. There are also opportunities for informal discussions about the anecdotal progress and needs of students. Parents are invited to attend special days and school events. Parents are informed about issues as and when they arise so as to have a coordinated approach to student education. School signs, newsletter, school events and telephone communication enhance communication with the school community. Parents are also invited to become involved in various extra-curricular activities, celebrations, and community events, including award presentations. The Parents and Citizen’s association is actively involved in the school and a consultative group for school development.

The Special Education Program teacher meets with AVTs, parents and caregivers, and teaching staff to negotiate adjustments for students with disabilities. Case meetings are also held regularly for students requiring interagency support.

Respectful relationships programs

The school has developed and implemented programs that focus on appropriate, respectful and healthy relationships. Positive Behaviour for Learning lessons include personal safety and bullying foci at different times of the year. Anti-bullying lessons occur during the lead up to the National Day of Action Against Violence and Bullying and at other times according to monthly data analysis by the PBL Team. The Daniel Morcombe personal safety lessons have also been incorporated into the PBL lessons and a selection are implemented during the school year.

**From 2015, Exclusion represents principal decisions to exclude rather than recommendations for exclusion. From 2015 where a principal decided not to exclude, a small number of recommendations for exclusions have been counted as a long suspension. Exclusions, Cancellations and Long & Charge Suspensions may be upheld or set aside through an appeals process.

School holidays are just around the corner and we wish everyone a safe and happy break. I am off to Cambodia for nine days and am looking forward to exploring the ancient temples of Siem Reap in particular. Fingers crossed that all of the illnesses that have been floating around over the past term will disappear as the weather warms.

Warm regards

Parent Teacher Interviews

Thank you to all our parents/carers who have

attended the parent teacher interviews this week.

This was a great opportunity to meet with your

child’s teacher to discuss progress with their

learning and success in and out of the classroom.

If you did not get the opportunity to attend an

interview, you may contact your child’s teacher to

make an alternate time next term.

who are representing Serviceton South SS at the

Gladiator Cup Netball carnival Friday at CJ

two netball teams much success as they compete

to retain the title from 2016 as Netball Grand Final

Winners.

Uniform Update

We have received confirmation that the new

uniforms are almost ready and will be available at

Lowes, Inala Plaza after the holidays. We will

continue to provide updates as they become

available.

School Camp: Year 5 & 6 This week all students in Years 5 & 6 who are attending our school camp to Midginbil Hill on 9-11 October in Term 4, received a list of “What to Bring to Camp” and a medical form to be completed. Please return the medical form to the office as soon as possible. If your child did not bring this home, please contact the office. The upcoming holidays are a great time to ensure your child has everything on the list that they will need to take to camp. Swimming Prep – Year 2 Next term students in Prep – Year 2 will participate in a structured swimming program for their HPE lessons. Swimming instruction will be at Dunlop Pool, Inala with trained instructors and all lessons will be completed in small ability groups. The swimming program will take place on Wednesdays for 5 weeks. Further information about the program including dates and cost will be provided in the first week next term.

Positive Behaviour for Learning

Over the past week we have been focussing on

Being respectful of someone’s personal space

which is a social skill. Individuals who have

difficulty showing appropriate social skills may

Page 4: Inala Police: Student Awards It is wonderful to have our ... · 9/14/2017  · moving onto an activity based around a rock pool scene using paper cutting, collage and texture. Ideal

unknowingly invade your personal space.

Conversely, individuals with social-skill difficulties

or sensory issues may be extremely opposed to

you being in their personal space. As well, it is

important to keep in mind that different cultures

have different ideas about personal space.

Teachers have been working on unpacking how

our body language gives messages to others who

may be in our personal space and strategies to

use to communicate politely and calmly our needs

to these people.

Attendance

There is no doubt that the message around

attendance is clear: every day counts. Every Day

Counts is a state wide initiative that aims to assist

in improving student attendance at school through

a shared commitment by students, parents,

caregivers, schools and the community.

To do this, Every Day Counts promotes four

key messages:

all children should be enrolled at school

and attend on every school day

schools should monitor, communicate and

implement strategies to improve regular

school attendance

truanting can place a student in unsafe

situations and impact on their future

employability and life choices

attendance at school is the responsibility

of everyone in the community.

The following is our attendance percentage for our 2017 Year Levels: We have had a shift on the leader board with Year 2 moving up to take second place.

Remember to get to school every day and on time.

School Starts: 8:45am
