What is an Incident?An occurrence or event—natural, technological, or human-caused—that requires a
response to protect life, property, or the environment.
What is Preparedness?Actions taken to plan, organize, equip, train, and exercise to build and sustain the capabilities necessary
to prevent, protect against, mitigate the effects of, respond to, and recover from those threats that pose the
greatest risk.
What is a Response?A reaction to a question, experience, or some other type of stimulus/incident.
Types of Incidents?Major disasters, emergencies, terrorist attacks, terrorist threats, civil unrest, wildland and
urban fires, floods, hazardous materials spills, nuclear accidents, aircraft accidents,
earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, tropical storms, tsunamis, war-related disasters, public
health and medical emergencies, other occurrences requiring an emergency response.

What is ICS?
• Is a standardized management tool for meeting the demands of small or large
emergency or non-emergency situation.
• Represents "best practices" and has become the standard for emergency management
across the country.
• May be used for planned events, natural disasters, and acts of terrorism.
• Is a key feature of the National Incident Management System (NIMS). The ICS is a
management system designed to enable effective and efficient incident response and
recovery.
