ANZAC DAY PRAYER
On Anzac Day, we especially recall the brave and faithful ones
who have laid down their lives in the wars and those who continue to serve
in the defence of our liberties.
We are grateful for their courage, their sacrifice and for the peace and freedom we have in our
nation because of them.
We pray that we who remain will learn from their example of faithfulness
and endurance.
Please comfort those who mourn.
Thank you Lord for the peace and joy that we can find through faith in Christ.
May we come to know You and the everlasting life You offer to those who will receive it,
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen

the year.
The College welcomes a number of new staff this term. We welcome Mr Nicholas Carson (Business Manager), Mr Pat
Rodgers (History/Legal Studies Coordinator), Mr Stephen Coyle (replacing Mr Joe Madani who is on Long Service Leave),
Mr David Zhang (replacing Ms Melissa Colefax who is on Long Service Leave).

RIP MS PATRICIA ROBERTSON
Ms Robertson passed away while being operated on for an aneurism on Sunday. She was a Learning Support Teacher
here for a short time in the mid 2000s and more recently worked overseas in England and at Mosman High. Ms Robertson
was School Captain at Mercy College in 1987
Mr John Couani
From the Assistant Principal Teaching and Learning Welcome to another term of learning and thinking at St Pius X College!
For parents in Years 7 to 11, by now you should have received your son's Interim report in the mail as well as the Portal. It
is worthwhile to have a positive conversation with your son about his progress and to identify strategies to assist continued
growth.
Year 12 Teachers are now well in the process of completing Mid Course Reports and these will be available on the Portal
on Friday 6th May and will also be posted. Year 12 Parent/Student/Teacher Meetings are scheduled for Monday 9th May
commencing at 4.00pm.
Year 11 Parent/Student/Teacher Meetings are scheduled for Wednesday 25th May from 4.00pm.
Parent Teacher Meetings for Years 5 to 10 will take place during the day on Tuesday 19th July which is the start of Term 3.
A general reminder that you can check your son's level of achievement for assessment tasks when marks are released
through the Portal. You can also check due dates and details for assessment tasks.

regarding student progress in literacy and numeracy and are intended to complement the wide range of formal and
informal assessments that are already conducted in the college.
The results provide valuable information about student achievement that can be used to inform teaching and learning
programs.
Mr A Damo
From the Assistant Principal – Mission and Identity On Monday this week across Australia and in different parts of the world, Australians united to remember not only the
original ANZACS but the thousands of men and women who have given their lives in defending Australia. Although there
are no original Anzacs still alive, the term has come to stand for the qualities which Australians have seen their forces show
in war. These qualities collectively make up the Anzac spirit and include endurance, courage, ingenuity, good humour,
and mateship.
My family come from a small northern coastal town called Dorrigo. In the centre of the town is a statue dedicated to all
who lost their lives in conflicts. Forty-three men from this very small town lost their lives in WWI. It is impossible to calculate
the impact of these deaths on not only the families but also to this community. I am sure this scenario would have been
repeated across many hundreds of towns across Australia. Words cannot do justice to their sacrifice.
At our Staff Prayer on Tuesday morning and at our ANZAC Ceremony on Wednesday, we remembered the gift of peace
that has been given to us by these Anzacs as well as those who continue to risk their lives in defending Australia.
A reminder that we have a number of Mission and Identity events taking place in the next couple of weeks:
The Year 5 Bible and Year 6 Commitment Pledge Liturgy: Wednesday 4th May, 10 am at Our Lady of Dolours
Church
The Year 5 and 6 Mothers’ Day Mass and Morning Tea: Friday 6th May 10.30 am
The Year 7-12 Mothers’ Day Liturgy and Breakfast: Friday 6th of May 7.30 am
Peace Beatitudes for those who work with Young People
Blessed are we who are called to build an inclusive community, for we walk in the footsteps of our Father.
Blessed are we who sow peace and harmony, for ours will be the joy of the Lord.
Blessed are we who plant seeds of hope in youthful hearts, for we will inherit the dawn.
Blessed are we who are sensitive to the cries of youth today, for they yearn for the coming of a peaceful Kingdom.
Blessed are we when we anguish because our students are difficult,
for one day they will model our loving and peaceful concern.
Blessed are we when we reach out to God through our students, for you will surely find us and rejoice.
Blessed are we who lead young people in the paths of justice and peace, for we will shine like stars for all eternity.
Ms D Dempsey
From the Social Justice Coordinator St Pius X College was very busy with social justice issues in Term 1 with the highlight being the huge collection for Project
Compassion lead and run by our Year 12 students, showing that we not only have great student leaders but also they are
very aware of their responsibilities to the greater society. Mr Listo has been extremely active in social justice issues also
taking a growing cohort of Years 10 and 11 boys to Willowood Aged Care Facility every Monday of Term 1, and he
continues his selfless act this term. A number of staff, both teachers and support staff have been assisting our boys keep
up their commitment to Matthew Talbot Men’s Hostel. This project is one of our most popular with the students on
Wednesday evenings. On Tuesday afternoons our Senior boys have been regular donors at the Chatswood branch of
The Australian Red Cross Blood Bank.
The Edmund Rice Society continue be extremely proactive with weekly lunchtime meetings discussing a broad range of
social justice topics. In Term 1 the society was fortunate to have two guest speakers; Mr Couani spoke about Edmund Rice
Beyond Borders and Br Sherrin gave an insightful lecture on the life of Blessed Edmund Rice and life as a Christian Brother.
The Year 11 leaders of the society have been great at assisting all society members achieve their goals. This continues as
they are currently launching a football boot drive for African countries and continue to lead the other society members
in youth mental health, children in Australian refugee camps and giving to the broader EREA community.
The Edmund Rice Society members have arranged for 25 refurbished Lenovo laptops and a box of new SPX branded
sporting equipment to be given to The Savio Centre, and EREA Annexe School in Penrith, with support from an SPX IT staff
member. The Society will be personally delivering them and spend the day with them in week 5 this term. In addition to
this they will be sending 35 refurbished Lenovo laptops and a box of new SPX branded sporting equipment to EREA’s
Wollongong Annexe School in Week 2 this term, once again supported by an SPX IT staff member. Combining these two
donations with the 30 laptops they delivered to The Haven Education Centre Terrigal means that we have been able to
give a total of 90 refurbished laptops to underprivileged within the EREA greater Sydney basin area.
The Edmund Rice Society would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of the three Annexe schools, to thank the 90 St Pius
X families who donated their old Lenovo laptops to make this happen, the PDHPE Department for their generous donation
of sporting equipment and the IT Support Department for refurbishing the laptops and offering Mr Saidi’s skills as IT support
for a day to each of the Annexe schools. The Edmund Rice Society would like to remind all students that they are welcome
to come and sit in on a meeting at lunchtime on Wednesdays of Week 1 and Tuesdays of Week 2 in LC2, to see what they
do.
Mr D Blake
From the Youth Ministry Coordinator Preparations for our contingent of St Pius X College students travelling to WYD 2016 in Krakow Poland are gaining
momentum and enthusiasm builds as this ‘life making’ experience is swiftly approaching.
On the first Monday of the school holidays our sixteen WYD pilgrims from the college gathered
with ten other local Chatswood school aged pilgrims from Mercy College, Chatswood High and
Mount St Benedict’s to undertake the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference WYD Formation
Program. The program for the day was based around prayerfully analysing a theme of
transformation and unpacking the meaning of the WYD Prayer and applying the issues to our
very own lives.
Our boys took to the program with enthusiasm and in particular they appreciated
the opportunity to build relationships with their fellow pilgrims and pilgrim group
leaders. I would like to extend particular thanks to our small group leaders on the
day; Fr Paul, Mrs Dempsey, Miss Grove, Miss Allington and from Mercy College; Miss
Stojanovski, who provided guidance to the students who diligently focussed on the
program and found significant meaning and faith empowering analysis through
their efforts.
Each of the students had the opportunity to handle and reflect on the very same Gospel that Pope Emeritus; Benedict
16th held and Blessed the congregation with at the WYD Sydney 2008 Final Mass at Randwick Sydney in 2008.
We also had the opportunity to hear at length from a recent young pilgrim to the WYD in Rio de Janeiro in 2013, this
afforded the opportunity to learn directly about the anticipated experience.
Our day finished with what will be a regular occurrence for this same group on Pilgrimage; a small community Mass, Fr
Paul celebrated a simple but powerful Mass for our small group.
This commencing term will see some intense periods of preparation as the students and our pilgrimage leaders prepare
both practically and spiritually to embark in the next term break for the 22 day trip through Italy and on to Poland. Local
community events to farewell and commission our pilgrims at the College and within the Diocese before their departure
are being planned for late in this term and details will be made available shortly. Please continue to pray for our pilgrims
and leaders as they continue their preparations, just as we will be taking the prayerful intentions of the St. Pius X College
Community with us to Krakow.
Mr A Brannan
From the Head of Student Services The College was well represented at the Chatswood RSL Garden of Remembrance
Dawn Service on ANZAC Day with members of the Colleges 2014 Kokoda

Debating and Public Speaking Below is the draw for the Catholic Schools Debating Competition, Round 2 to Round 6.
Round 2 is this Friday, Week 1. Students will travel to Loreto Normanhurst on the train with coaches after training concludes
at 5pm. There will be no time for students to go to Westfield to purchase their dinner so everyone will need to bring an
extra sandwich and drink and any snacks so that we have something to eat before supper is provided at Loreto. Debating
will pay for the train fare. We should arrive at Loreto for a 6pm coin toss which should mean a 7pm-7.20 pm debate
commencement time. Could all parents please collect their sons from Loreto College, (formal address is 91-93 Pennant
Hills Rd, Normanhurst but you need to turn off Pennant Hills Road onto Osborn Road). The school is on your left and you
will immediately pass a hall—all the lights will be on. There is an entrance driveway on the left as soon as you see the hall
that will take you down to the school carpark where you can park if you are coming to watch your son's debate. At the
conclusion of the night students can be collected from this entrance driveway—there are a couple of collection 'pit-
stops' on the driveway that we can utilise. Thank you for your help and we look forward to seeing you there on the night,
even just for a quick hello.

Good news! The next main course intakes are scheduled for Term 3, 2016
Thank you to all families who enrolled students in the Occupational Therapy - The Art of Touch Typing course
and the Handwriting Skills course which were successfully trialled in Term 1, 2016.
The highly positive feedback from those families involved was highly positive, and means that the LSE Department now

in response to the needs and interests of your boys, and the availability of our external provider and registered
occupational therapist, Anna Orchard.
I take this opportunity to thank Anna for her care and expert training of the boys, and her ready communication
throughout the term – all of which were noted in a number of parents’ and students’ feedback on the Term 1 courses.
During Term 2 Anna will be running short extension courses from Weeks 2 to 5 for a number of the students who completed
courses in Term 1 and who would like to further practise and consolidate their skills under Anna’s close supervision.
Invitations for the next intake for Term 3 courses in Handwriting and Touch Typing will be posted in Woodchatta from Week
7 of Term 2. So, for interested families, just watch this space!

Junior School News Welcome back to a short but busy Term 2. The boys should have returned in their winter uniform with their shoes polished
and their hair neat. The boys will commence the term with an ANZAC commemoration.
In the holidays we had two sporting tours with the Rugby boys going to Armidale and the Football boys going to Tamworth.
Both tours were a resounding success. The Rugby boys acquitted themselves well and came runners up at the carnival.
I attended the Football tour in Tamworth and we had a great time. The tournament is all about participation and no
places are given but we did win 4 games on the Saturday and then lost on the Sunday so that means we came in fourth
place. The only award that is given out at the Tournament is “The Spirit of the Sport Award” and we were the recipients
of this award. Well done to all the boys. More information about the tours will be in the Junior School Newsletter.

Peru (a shanty town) and all the proceeds are returned to them. Mrs Rajca will be talking to the boys on Monday 2nd May
about these wonderful ladies and how they have and can use the money. If you intend to come to the mass, please
return this slip by Monday 2nd May. We need to know numbers so we can plan accordingly.

complete the reply slip below and have your son return it to his class teacher by next Monday 2nd May. Grandfathers are
welcome as I know they may not want to miss out on the morning tea! If any dads could help serve the morning tea at

ANZAC DAY SPEECH
2016 Chatswood Dawn Service ANZAC Day Speech by SPX Kokoda Expedition 2014 Members
College Captain Liam Houlihan, and Prefects Hamish Book and Harry Heaney.
Hamish
Since the first Australian soldiers left our shores to serve in the Boer War, the spirit of mateship and
sacrifice has permeated into a collective spirit of the Australian soldiers. This spirit was echoed and
consolidated on the beaches of Turkey in 1915. It is this spirit that we remember and honour today.
Australian men and women in the tradition of ANZAC have served in global and regional conflict in
Europe, the Pacific and the Middle East. Each conflict had its unique challenges, terrain and enemies.
The one constant was the spirit of the ANZAC.
Within these conflicts the pillars of courage, endurance, mateship and sacrifice have endured
combined with a sense of humour and resourcefulness born from the unique qualities of the Australian
survivor
In victories and defeats these characteristics have stood the test of time in the different contexts
experienced by Australian service men and women. For example, from nurses in casualty clearing
stations on the Western Front in the First World War to Australian POWs held captive by the Japanese
the Germans or the Italians in the Second World War to engineers and doctors helping rebuild towns
and lives in the aftermath of the destruction of cyclone Winston in Fiji.
In all these unique settings, ANZACs have experienced the courage to stand up amidst trying times
of conflict and to assist those in need through peacekeeping operations and responding to crisis
events. The Australian army, navy and air force personal, irrespective of these challenges, all are
bound by the tradition of the ANZAC.
As Former Prime Minister Paul Keating stated at the unveiling of the tomb of the unknown solider at
the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, ANZAC “is a legend not of sweeping military victories so
much as triumphs against the odds, of courage and ingenuity in adversity.”
Liam
As youth of Australia, the concept of a world war is difficult to understand. While we watch
servicemen and women leave for conflicts in the Middle East, most of us, quite fortunately, have not
felt the fear of invasion, the weight of a weapon, or the dread of never returning home. We live in
relatively peaceful times in a safe country, not truly understanding of the courage of those who have
been prepared to lay down their lives so we can live our present.
The experience of walking the Kokoda Trail in 2014, allowed us to gain new understandings of
Australian history, identity and spirit. War veteran Bede Tongs spoke to our school, sharing his memories
of the Kokoda Trail and adding to our understanding of the ANZAC Legend. Bede, an infantryman,
had fought throughout Papua New Guinea at Templeton’s Crossing and Buna and Gona Beach. He
was awarded the Military Medal for his feats of courage, where he singlehanded eliminated a
machine-gun post at Eora Creek. As part of the 3rd Battalion, the longest serving group on the trail,
Bede vividly recounted the struggles he and his comrades overcame.
Bede’s words were important, but meant even more to us when we walked the trail. In June 2014,
two dozen St Pius boys, fathers, teachers and friends trekked the rugged 96km Kokoda Trail as part of
an 11 day journey. As a group, we directly followed the track from Ower’s Corner to the northern
beaches, across the famous Owen Stanley Range, 70 years after the Australian soldiers had done the
same in their advance. We realised the soldiers, not much older than us, had walked the same path
in battle.
For every hill we scaled, the ANZACs once did in the horror and confusion of war. At every memorial
when we paused to remember, the ANZACs were forced to bare the loss of a friend. For every night
we spent sleeping, Australian soldiers had spent in fear, for nothing lit the dark but enemy fire.
Harry
For me, Anzac Day commemorates a defining period in our history. It honours the spirit of the
Australian soldier, sailor and air force personnel who in the conflicts since 1915 have represented our
country with courage, endurance, mateship and sacrifice.
As a nation, we stand on the shoulders of those who flew our flag with pride, who commanded
respect for their bravery and mateship. It is these actions of men and women from our armed services
who created and continue to honour the spirit of the ANZAC. On this morning, 101 years after
Australian and New Zealand soldiers charged onto the beaches at ANZAC Cove, we commemorate
and salute their spirit and are honoured to continue their legacy.
ANZAC Day is a day of gratitude and remembrance, of pride in what it means to be Australian. It
reminds us that the liberties we take for granted did not come without sacrifice, and that our
servicemen and women continue to preserve such liberties in active campaigns and peace keeping
missions around the world.
From the trenches at Gallipoli to the jungles of Papua New Guinea, from the arid Middle East to the
challenges of terrorism, there remains one constant – The ANZAC spirit.
Over 100 years ago, Banjo Patterson realised the significance of this spirit and its impact on forging
our identity as a nation. His words ring as true and poignantly today as they did when he penned his
open letter to the troops.
Australia takes her pen in hand
To write a line to you,
To let you fellows understand
How proud we are of you.
He writes:
With all our petty quarrels done,
Dissensions overthrown,
We have, through what you boys have done,
A history of our own.
And with Australia's flag shall fly
A spray of wattle-bough
To symbolise our unity —
We're all Australians now.

FOOTBALL NEWS
The 2016 Football season start this Saturday. The Committee wishes everyone the best of luck in the
season ahead.
We will again be producing the weekly Results Round-up flyer in which will showcase the results and
profile different teams each week in photos. We encourage all parents to send in photos and be
part of their son’s experience. You don’t need to be a great photographer or have expensive
equipment. Just get as close as you can and capture the action.
Each week we will profile 3 teams to encourage those teams to send in photos - that doesn’t mean
every other team can’t also send in their photos!!
This week’s teams of the week are 13B & 14B & 15A - so if you have a boy in one of these teams get
snapping.
Send your photos to [email protected] - save this to your phone and upload those photos as
soon as you take them. We need the photos in by Sunday afternoon.
We hope those boys who attended our holiday Football Skills camp enjoyed it and lifted their skills
ready for the season ahead - we had an amazing turnout of 62 boys - a record.
The full senior & junior calendar of matches will be on our webpage soon. There are also links to most
opponent’s grounds with google map links.
We wish all our teams good luck this weekend -- GO PIUS!!

SPORTING ACTIVITIES
ON BEHALF OF St Pius X College, ISA, IPSHA
NSTA, NSJCA and MWJCA
St Pius X College administrates, convenes and participates in ISA, IPSHA, NSTA, NSJCA and MWJCA inter-
school sporting activities in which many students from its members’ including students of this school,
participate. Students participating in these sporting events take part in practice, trials and competitions.
While St Pius X College takes measures to make the sporting activities as safe as possible for participants,
there is a risk that students can be injured and suffer loss (including financial loss) and damage as a result
of their participation in these sporting activities, whether at training or in actual events.
St Pius X College expect students to take responsibility for their own safety during sporting activities by
wearing safety equipment, by thinking carefully about the use of safety equipment and by behaving in a
safe and responsible manner towards team members, opponents, spectators, officials, property and
grounds. St Pius X College also expects parents, spectators and other participants to behave in a safe and
responsible manner and to comply with the ISA Code of Conduct.
Injury can occur while the student is engaging in or watching a sporting activity, or travelling to and from
the event. The injury may result from a student's actions or the actions of others.
On some occasions, an injury can be serious (such as torn ligaments, dislocations, back injuries, concussion
or broken bones). In very rare cases the injury can be life threatening or result in permanent disability. If a
student has a pre-existing injury, participating in a sporting activity could result in an exacerbation of that
injury.
Students could also suffer loss as a result of their personal property being lost, stolen, damaged or
destroyed.
