Newsletter editor’s preface

With JALT 2017 in Tsukuba and its wide variety of OLE presentations just one month behind us

and our new coordinator Bertlinde Vögel guiding us, we already have less than two months to

submit proposals for JALT 2018 in Shizuoka at the Granship. This NL gives all important

information on pgs. 13 to 17 as well as translations of the theme in 6 languages, which will also be

on the JALT homepage very soon.

And yet, there are two even more urgent deadlines for OLE:

If you are interested in contributing to the jubilee issue, see the information on pages 10 & 11 and

send an e-mail to [email protected]. Ditto until Jan. 15th to http://pansig.org/cfp, if you want to

present in the OLE-SIG Forum at PanSIG 2018 (information on p. 12 below). Even more deadlines

are included in the OLE timeline for 2018 on p, 9.

In order to prove that OLE has been using its resources meaningfully, an updated coordinator’s

report is also included (p. 3 to 9).

Nevertheless we wish all OLE members, officers and all interested in what OLE does a well-

deserved rest at the end of 2017 and or the beginning of 2018.

Your newsletter editor for OLE NL 83

Rudolf Reinelt

New coordinator self-introduction: Bertlinde Vögel Since childhood I have been interested in languages. I majored in German Literature and History

and studied French and Spanish at the University of Vienna before coming to Japan in 1999. Since

my arrival, I have been teaching at Osaka University focusing on teaching German and working on

teaching materials for speaking classes with beginners. At times, I help organizing readings of

Austrian authors.

Currently I am working on a PhD about fluency and automatization of chunks. I am not progressing

as fast as I wish to, but the project itself helps me to become more focused in my research.

Working as a coordinator for OLE is a new challenge for me, and I feel lucky that I am surrounded

by and look forward to working with a wonderful team of officers. Many thanks to all officers, and

especially to Rudolf, who helps me with lots of detailed information to keep things going.

Updated OLE SIG Coordinator’s Report (Abbreviated Version) for 2016-7

Dear OLE members

2016-2017 was again an eventful year for OLE. The main event was the sixth OLESIG conference, held

on September 15th and 16th together with Hiroshima JALT at Hiroshima International University in

Hiroshima. We thank Prof. Monika Szirmai and her group for perfectly organizing this truly international

event with participants from five countries representing at least five languages. We especially enjoyed Prof.

Nishiyama’s main presentation on the revision of the CEFR.

OLE was also involved in Pan-SIG 2017 with its own symposium and presentations. Preparations for next

year have already begun.

OLE is planning a 20th year jubilee volume. A call for papers has appeared in NL 82 and is attached at the

end of this report.

Not this year: OLE at JALTCALL; Chinese and French Workshop; flyers in all languages, but in some.

Conference theme translations have appeared on the conference homepage at

https://jalt.org/conference/jalt2017:

Content also available in English, 日本語, Français, Deutsch, Español, Bahasa Indonesia

Highlights:

- almost all available JALT conference OLE compendiums are now on http://web.iec.ehime-

u.ac.jp/reinelt/katudouhoukokuProcConfPapComps3.html . The coordinator apologizes for any

inconveniences the delays may have caused. Make frequent use of the resources, please.

Alas, we have not been able to gather the OLE at JALT 2016 papers.

- OLE 6 SIG event with Prof. Nishiyama. For details see below!

Continued from last year

- OLE serves as the main distributor for the Cervantes Institute and has translated and distributed all

important JALT materials into French, Spanish, Korean, Chinese and German.

- It has published its obligatory 3 newsletters (80 to 82 and the special newsletter for the German Teachers

Association)

- OLE was asked to serve as UALs contact, which we gratefully accepted, but not much has happened since

the May 2012 Skype conference.

Officers (Note: For an update since Nov 2017 see p. 2 of this NL 83)

These were the officers for this year:

Coordinator: Rudolf Reinelt

Co-coordinator: Margit Krause-Ono

Treasurer: Maria Gabriela Schmidt

Membership: Andreas Kasjan

Program: Eric Fortin

Publications Chair: Monika Szirmai

Public Relations: Alexander Imig

Officers at large:

Bertlinde Vögel, Bruno Jactat, Katrin Niewalda

Thank you and we hope you are willing to stand again when the elections come!

JALT 2016/2017

OLE encourages all presenters to write up their papers and submit them e.g. to the conference proceedings. This has been met with mixed results: Some years, there were as many as 11, others as few as none. This year we have no information about proceedings submissions. OLE SIG Membership (According to the report submitted by the membership officer Andreas Kasjan on Nov. 4th)

Reminders have been sent regularly to all former members.

OLE as SIG

OLE has been fulfilling many criteria for a full SIG including voting rights etc. (this was the condition of its

existence right from the beginning!). We are waiting for the recognition process results!

Newsletters

Newsletters are still a unique way to reach people and keep them informed. OLE sends its newsletters out,

and it pays. Its conference slots are usually filled in a few hours. OLE Newsletters can be consulted at

http://web.iec.ehime-u.ac.jp/reinelt/katudouhoukokuProcConfPapComps3.html(OLE NL 80 to 82) and are

distributed as pdf, if we know the address, otherwise by mail. Before long we should be able to save

considerably on mailing costs. An example is given here below.

Numbers

The change from snail mail to e-mail or informing members of a page that has been made available for

downloading is almost finished. As a most recent example, OLE NL was sent by mail to 23 of its members,

officers, presenters or other interested persons. E-mails were sent to 102 such persons. The NL is availabe

for downloading on the homepage of the coordinator for 2016/7 at http://web.iec.ehime-

u.ac.jp/reinelt/katudouhoukokuProcConfPapComps3.html

and an information mail has gone out to 25 addresses.

At the moment we have no way of knowing how many have indeed downloaded the OLE NL.

Title: Teaching the language of physics

Abstract: Mathematics is pure language (aka the language of universe). Alfred Adler said that it is unique

among languages because unlike other languages, mathematics has an ability to provide precise expressions

for every thought and concept that can be formulated. In my spring semester course, students began to think

about how the world moves, using the language of mathematics. Students learned the terminology used in

physics, as well as practice translating this terminology into the language of mathematics. The number one

cause of mistakes in physics problems occurs in the translating of a spoken language (in this case English)

into the mathematical language and not in the calculation of numbers or equations. Therefore, considerable

time was spent in understanding and translating the spoken or written language of physics into numbers and

equations. This presentation will explain how this translation process is the same as translation from English

to any language, as well as how studying physics can help teachers teach translation better. Examples of how

teaching translation was scaffolded will be provided. Lastly, this presentation will show how the language of

mathematics defines how languages are learned.

Summary: This presentation will explain how this translation process is the same as translation from English

to any language, as well as how studying physics can help teachers teach translation better. Examples of how

teaching translation was scaffolded will be provided. Lastly, this presentation will show how the language of

mathematics defines how languages are learned.

(SIGs) of the Japan Association for Language Teaching (JALT). The conference brings together

leading scholars and practitioners in language education from Japan, Asia, and throughout the

world. It is meant to be a smaller, more intimate conference than the annual international JALT

conference (which is held each fall), and is a place where SIG members can network with each

other.

OLE at PanSIG 2018

Together with various other SIGs, OLE will be participating again in this PanSIG Conference. The

Call for Proposals is currently underway, and all proposals must be submitted by January 15, 2018.

In addition to English, presentations in Japanese as well as other languages are also warmly

encouraged. Notifications of final acceptance of proposals will be sent via email between mid-

February and early March, 2018.

OLE SIG Forum at PanSIG 2018

Develop your language and intercultural competences

This forum’s presentations will explore the teaching and education of other foreign languages on

the university level in Japan. The latter has to undergo constant changes caused by G-N-L-

university reform(s). Invariably, questions such as ‘What does Monkasho expect of this change and

the forthcoming implementation of the CEFR?’ arise. In a globalized world, the following points

need also to be addressed: ‘What are the advantages of (even very basic) multilingualism?’ and

‘How to integrate intercultural communication into language teaching?’

Contributions for languages such as German, Spanish, French and Chinese are already confirmed. If

you are interested in taking part in the OLE SIG Forum, please contact Margit Krause-Ono at k-

[email protected] or Rudolf Reinelt at [email protected] with the

title/subject line PanSIG18OLE before January 15, 2018.

JALT 2018 INFO

Preface

JALT 2017 is barely over and we are already starting to prepare for the next annual JALT

conference in Shizuoka. OLE had presentations on all three days at JALT 2017, and presenters are

still writing up their papers for the conference volume, or sending their presentations to the co-

coordinator at [email protected] for the OLE at JALT2017 compendium.

OLE hopes to show a similarly strong presence at JALT 2018. Submissions have already started with a

final deadline of February 12th, if you want to submit to JALT directly. Please consult the call for papers

below.

If you want OLE to handle your presentation proposal for example for the OLE Sig forum or any of the

Multilingualism, German, French, Spanish, Chinese or other workshops, you will have to send your

proposal, its title and your affiliation to the coordinator at bvoegel (at) lang.osaka-u.ac.jp by Sunday,

February 4th with the subject line ForOLEatJALT2018.

In order to help you prepare as well as anyhow possible, this NL contains the official theme in English as

well as the relevant parts from the official Call for Papers. This is followed by translations in various

languages. Please use them to spread the information among your colleagues.

JALT 2018:

Diversity and Inclusion

44th Annual International Conference on Language Teaching and Learning & Educational

Materials Exhibition

Shizuoka Convention & Arts Center (Granship) Shizuoka City, Shizuoka, Japan

Friday, November 23, to Monday, November, 26, 2018

Call for presentation proposals: https://jalt.org/conference/call-proposals

Deadline: Monday, February 12, 2018 11:59 pm, JST

“To everything there is a season.” And a reason. Now is the season for inclusion, to embrace the

incredible diversity within our profession. Although there seems to be much diversion, division, and

exclusion in the wider world, the time is now ripe for us to look at the diversity within our practices

and ask, “How can we be more inclusive?” In order to support inclusion and create a more level

playing field for our students, we need to better understand the evolving language learning and

teaching landscape, become aware of the work that is being done in new areas and heed the call

from our learners, teachers, and institutions to play our parts in a brighter future.

JALT2018 will provide a platform for new ideas and hitherto unheard voices to be heard. It will

provide avenues to open up our classrooms and challenge existing ideas about what we language

teachers and our learners need in order to usher in an era of change. We aim to address the concerns

of teachers, learners, and leaders and show how “inclusion” provides a place from which

multiplicity of thought and action can flourish.

Pusat Persidangan dan Seni Shizuoka (Granship) Bandar Shizuoka, Shizuoka, Jepun

23 Nov (Jumaat) hingga 26 Nov (Isnin) 2018
