    Sustainability

We are currently finalising details of the work involved around the sustainability of ABC and the process for tendering to

carry it out. Once this is done, we will circulate this information to Consortium organisations. Consortium organisations

with the capacity to deliver this sustainability project will be invited to tender for it.

Evaluation of Grangegorman ABC to date

We have agreed to carry out an evaluation of the ABC programme to date to help us understand what worked well, and

what we could do better or differently for the next phase of the programme. We are in the process of selecting and

appointing a suitable evaluator to carry out this work. The evaluation will be an opportunity for Consortium members

and other partners to have their say and to share everyone’s experience of ABC so far.

  • Upskilling

In 2016 24 students enrolled in the DIT Level 7 Aistear and Síolta Implementation Programme (the early childhood curriculum framework for all children from birth to six years).

CDETB Adult Education Service in partnership with the Gateway Project are offering a Level 6 full award in childcare in the Dublin north-west inner city area starting in September This is a repeat of the successful Level 6 course in Gateway just finishing this summer. Participants should already have a QQI full Level 5 award in childcare (with Merits) and be working in a childcare setting.

Full details on eligibility and applications are

    available from [email protected]

Doodle Den Doodle Den, an after -school literacy club for senior

infants’ children, has helped 120 children to date. The aim

of the club, which is run by Dublin 7 School Completion

Programme, is to engage children in fun reading

    and writing activities.

    Grangegorman ABC Update

We have reached outline agreement with CES and Pobal to redeploy our existing budget to the end of December 2017. This will

enable us to carry out evaluation of our programme with an external evaluator, and to commission a study, hopefully by one of the

Consortium members, on options for the Grangegorman area when ABC finishes: this is The Sustainability brief we talked about at

    the Consortium meetings in December.

In March, we announced that the Department of Children and Youth Affairs (DCYA), who have funded ABC with Atlantic Philanthro-

pies, had invited ABCs to apply for extra allocations to enable us to continue to December 2017. The catch was that there had to be

extensions of things we were already doing. This is separate to the above allocation which we already had; following discussions

with members and contracted organisations we have applied for about an extra €140,000. We expect to hear about this soon.

DCYA also announced that they will be bringing proposals to the Dáil at the October Budget to fund ABC to August 2018; after this

they hope to have developed their own proposals for a new Programme. We are confident that the Dáil will approve a new budg-

et. Members of the Consortium and the wider community will be invited to meetings to discuss all this later in the year as things

    become clear.

Parent Child Home Programme (PCHP) PCHP is a "learning through play experience" for parents and their preschool children. It is designed to strengthen the natural bond between parent and child, and to encourage a love of learning. ABC is currently exploring how best to continue to support PCHP. To date, it has been supported by The National College of Ireland (NCI).

    Referral Pathways

The ‘Stepping Up’ early years to primary school transition

programme began in 2016 when over 50 children from the

area took part! It is now in the process of being rolled out

for children who are moving from early years to school

    this year.

Training sessions delivered by HSE specialists for early

years’ staff to support them in helping to make referrals

for children in their care have taken place. Workshops on

Speech and Language (28th March) and Psychological

Services (17th May) took place in Henrietta Street and were

well attended by early year’s staff. Feedback was very

    positive.
