Dear Fellow Alumni, The Independent Association of Framingham State Alumni (IAFSA) is celebrating another successful year of growth and accomplishment! The Association continues its tradition of service by providing scholarships, interest-free loans, awards, and assistance to Framingham State University students, alumni, and faculty. This year we are pleased to announce the addition of not one, not two, but three new programs! As always, IAFSA is grateful for the establishment of these as well as for all the generous donations we receive from dedicated alumni. We are dependent on your support and hope you continue to include us in your charitable giving. Similarly, we are extremely appreciative of our volunteers on the Board and those who continue to assist our Executive Director, Marilyn Manzella, with our seasonal mailings, gift processing, and other large projects throughout the year. During Commencement and Reunion Weekend last May, Framingham State University honored Marilyn Manzella by selecting her as the recipient of its first Alumni Service Award. This honor is granted “to members of our alumni constituency who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in their careers or professions; whose work has contributed to the advancement of their community and its citizens; and whose commitment to the University has remained strong for many years, all while supplying outstanding service to FSU alumni.” This past fall, the Association welcomed alumni, students, faculty, and members of the public to “An Evening of Travel and Scholarship,” a presentation held at the Framingham Public Library. Six recipients of the Whitney Travel Grant shared (with great enthusiasm!) their research, discoveries, and experiences from their travels that the grant helped to fund.

The program was such a success; we hope to hold more like it in the future! Recently, we have been in discussions with the Framingham State University

administration about new ways we can contribute and partner once again.

Framingham State University’s annual Alumni Reunion Weekend will be held on May 18 - 20. Alumni House will

be open on Saturday, May 19th, from 1 to 6 p.m. We would love for you to stop by! Be sure to visit us on the web at AlumniHouse.org. There you can make donations and keep up with all of our latest news and events! You can also stay in touch with us through Facebook at facebook.com/iafsa.alumnihouse and click the “LIKE” button to become our fan. Again, we thank you for your continued generosity. We hope youcontinue to support us in our commitment to Framingham State University alumni, students, and faculty for years to come. Stay in touch with us!

Best,

Kelly M. Raymond ’07

After being without support staff in the IAFSA office for almost seven years, the Executive Board voted to add one part-time position for an Assistant to the Director. The position was advertised, interviews held, and the Board selected Debra Regan Cleveland ’73. In her role since June, Debbie has increased the visibility of Alumni House as a function venue and IAFSA as an organization. She

has circulated press releases, updated the Facebook page, written meeting minutes, and kept the website current. We are grateful for all her skills and support!

The Independent Association of Framingham State Alumni is pleased toannounce a new award to honor and acknowledge teachers who teach teachers; especially alums who have contributed to advancing knowledge in a subject, and demonstrated and instilled enthusiasm for teaching. The name of the award, “Touch the Future,” is inspired by Christa McAuliffe’s oft quoted, “I touch the future, I teach,” as well as Christa’s innovation and enthusiasm in teaching. This award will be presented at our annual meeting. The first recipient is alumna Mary Kenney Liscombe ’70, Director of the FSU Christa McAuliffe Center and Director of Education. Since 1994 Mary Liscombe has

welcomed thousands of science teachers and students each year to learn about space exploration at the Challenger Learning Center, part of the Christa CorriganMcAuliffe Center for Education and Teaching Excellence. Mary works with both pre-service and in-service teachers to promote inquiry-based, hands-on learning in the classroom and the advancement of the use of technology. She was a friend and classmate of Christa’s and has been a dedicated custodian of Christa’s legacy. The Touch the Future Award was established by Debra A. Cleveland ’73 in memory of her father, Henry F. Regan, an educator who sent three members of his family to Framingham State.

At the end of 2011, one of our alums, Joan Murtaugh, ’61, approached us about establishing a scholarship in memory of her parents, Thomas H. and Mary H. Murtaugh, longtime Framingham residents. We were delighted to be able to work with Joan to finalize the details in time for this year’s scholarship application cycle. The qualifications incorporate some aspects of the Murtaughs’ lives. Since her father was in the military, Joan’s family life was nomadic until her parents settled in Framingham. She enjoyed her experience at Framingham State because it was a nice, steady environment after moving around so much. As it was a small college, it was easy to get to know people, and participate in activities. It was ideal for her as she always wanted to be a teacher. Her father had been a college professor and he brought her to his lectures when she was a girl. Thomas H. Murtaugh was a graduate of Manhattan College and did postgraduate study at Brown and Columbia. He was assistant professor of engineering at Manhattan College and lecturer in the hydraulics of firefighting at Delehanty Institute in New York City. He also taught at Fordham and the Air Force Institute of Technology in Dayton, Ohio. He mixed service to his country with his engineering expertise,

serving in WWII and the Korean War, retiring from the Air Force and the US Army Corps of Engineers with the rank of lieutenant colonel. Mary H. Murtaugh graduated from Columbia Presbyterian Babies Hospital School of Nursing and had a private duty practice. When her husband’s Air Force duties caused the Murtaugh family to move around the United States, and even to England for a few years, Mary met the challenges throughout their 50

years of marriage. Her talents were not only those of the traditional housewife, but also extended to knowing her way around a toolbox. She also taught her family by example how to deal with people fairly, no matter the race or culture. The Murtaughs spent their last decades in Framingham and Joan taught for 36 years in the Framingham Public Schools.

One of the eligibility requirements for the Murtaugh Scholarship is that students must be graduates from a high school in Framingham. In addition, preference is given to offspring of police, fire, or military personnel. Joan recalls that growing up she thought her father knew “everyone in the police and fire departments in New York City” and he enjoyed teaching members of those departments and had a lot of respect for them. The Murtaugh Scholarship will touch future students, help preserve IAFSA’s tradition of giving, and honor her parents.

Adah Elizabeth (Betty) Whitney was a 1935 graduate of Framingham State Teachers College and traveled the world for work and pleasure. When IAFSA received a generous bequest from Betty Whitney’s estate, the Whitney Travel Grant was designed by the Independent Association of Framingham State Alumni to provide financial assistance to full-time Framingham State University faculty members for travel with an academic purpose. Sixteen faculty members have received assistance from this program since its inception in the spring of 2009.

This past November six grant recipients gave presentations on their travel and research in London, India, Turkey and Rome. This event was hosted by IAFSA at the Framingham Public Library. The evening was titled From Victorian London’s Secrets to the Starving Artists in Italy: An Evening of Travel and Scholarship. The topics were: Researching Victorians’ Secrets by Dr. Elizabeth Perry and Dr. Lynn Parker; Mother India and the Daily Practice of Diversity in India by Dr. Lisa Eck; Our

Turkish Spring by Dr. Karen Druffel and Dr. T. Bridgett Galvin; and Scholarship and Art History in the Eternal City by Dr. Erika Schneider. Applications for new travel grants are due semi-annually, on March 1 andOctober 15. For further information, contact IAFSA by phone 508.872.9770 or email [email protected].

Reporting on Whitney Grant Travels

FSU Professors Lynn Parker, Karen Druffel, Liz Perry, Lisa Eck, and Erika Schneider

How can you touch the future, preserve the present, and honor the past all at the same time? . . .by making a donation to the Independent Association of Framingham State Alumni!

In 2011, we grew our program of scholarship and loan aid to FSU students and we’ve done it, thanks to your donations, some made in memory of professors, classmates, and loved ones. We have a new scholarship, a new award for students, and a new award for alums established to remember and honor family and friends. We are launching a new initiative to increase our scholarship and loan assistance by 50%. This will necessitate increased participation and donor support. Help us reach this ambitious goal! Alumni House wasn’t spared from last year’s ice dams and other extreme weather damage. A roof leak caused part of the conference room ceiling to fall in. The roof was repaired, as well as the ceiling, boiler, and chimney. Thanks to those who donated funds for Alumni House maintenance, we were able to preserve “Our House” but more repairs and maintenance are in our future.

We are grateful for your past support. Our future depends on the participation of our members.

Please help us continue to “touch the future, preserve the present, and honor the past,” with a gift to the Independent Association of Framingham State Alumni. Checks may be made payable to IAFSA and mailed in the enclosed envelope to:

For more than 110 years, the Ellen Hyde Fund has been offering financial support to struggling students that enables them to continue their Goal to achieve a college education. This Interest-Free Loan program was established in remembrance of Ellen Hyde, an 1862 graduate of the State Normal School at Framingham, who taught at the school before becoming its Principal. In 1898, at a special meeting of the Alumnae Association, the Ellen Hyde Fund was established with an amount of $266. Other donations were pledged and the members were invited to contribute $1 a year for three years. Today the fund is “alive and well” due to numerous dona-tions, wise investments, and conscientious repayments of the loans awarded over the years. Each semester full-time undergraduate students receive notice of the availability of the Ellen Hyde Interest-Free Loans, up to $2,000 to use toward College room, board, tuition, and fees.

Those who are able to meet the following criteria are encouraged to submit an Ellen Hyde Undergraduate Loan Application: - Have completed at least 4 courses - Have a minimum average of 2.75 - Have demonstrated financial need The Ellen Hyde Committee evaluates the submitted application materials and makes the final decisions for the awards. Each recipient must agree to repay the loan at a rate of $50 per month upon graduation or termination of one’s undergraduatestudies at FSU. Contact the office at Alumni House to inquire about the unique Ellen Hyde Loan program for graduate students. It would be greatly appreciated if you, our Alumni, could help us share the information about this Interest-Free Loan opportunity with a current student. This financial assistance may enable them to successfully “Reach their Education Goals” or, as Christa McAuliffe would have said, “Reach for the Stars.” As always, contributions earmarked for this purpose are always welcome and will enable the Committee to grant more and larger loans over time.

Helping Alums through the Amelia Davis Fund

by Susan Duponte Conway, Amelia Davis Fund Chair

The Amelia Davis Fund was established in 1910 by members of the Class of 1892 in honor of Amelia Davis (1864), a former math teacher who taught at Framingham State for 46 years. Class members anticipated that one day an alum might find herself in a situation that could be mitigated by a small stipend. As a result, this fund has become instrumental in reaching out to graduates of the college who require some financial assistance. For the past two years, the fund has given monthly support to four alumni who were in need of supplementary income. It

also has provided money for those occasional medical emergencies that fall outside of a regular budget. We are happy to announce that one of the recipients of this fund recently wrote to us and graciously thanked us for the support we’ve given him over the past four years and to tell us that his circumstances have changed and he no longer requires our help! Members of the present committee also remain in touch with graduates who are in nursing homes, in poor health, or who just need an extra greeting from a friend. Holiday greetings are also sent to over 1600 members of the 50 year class and back.

As you know, the Amelia Davis Fund can only be successful if alumni are aware of its existence. Our committee is always actively looking for grads who could use our help but we continue to rely on you to let us know of anyone in need of our special help or caring. If you know of anyone who would benefit from accessing this fund or if any of you would like to join our committee and send notes and cards to alumni, please call Susan Conway or Marilyn Manzella at the Alumni House. We also welcome donations that are directed to the Amelia Davis Fund to assure that support will be available when needed.

On the occasion of our 50-year reunion, the FSU class of 1961 donated $12,000 to the Independent Association of Framingham State Alumni (IAFSA) to establish a Textbook Assistance Award for current students who would benefit from financial assistance in coping with the escalating costs of instructional materials. Award recipients are chosen from among students who applied for other IAFSA financial assistance options. Just think – no separate application needed! We limited the award to students in programs that evolved from the three available when we were students: elementary education, foods and nutrition and home economics. The first four recipients of our award: Corey Ciullo ’13 – nutrition/biochemistry; Kaitlyn Flenke ’12 – elementary education; Jacquelyn Johnston ’12 – fashion merchandising and Nicole Collins ’13 – early childhood

education, were selected by a committee of our classmates last November. Funds ($350) were added directly to an account for each student at the campus book-store. The money can be used to purchase textbooks and associated instructional materials. To qualify for the Class of 1961 Textbook Assistance Award, a student must have been at FSU for a year, have a 2.75 or higher GPA and have worked to contribute to their educational costs. We asked our first set of recipients to let us know how our program works and suggest ways to improve. We will welcome ideas from other students as well. If all goes smoothly, we hope to add to the fund when we come back again in 2016 for our 55-year reunion. We are 118 women who highly value our FSU education and want to give back in a way that is within our means, and directly benefits today’s students. About 70 percent of our living classmates contributed to this award.

Since last May, the gardens have flourished and bloomed—a sight to behold! Inside the House, we had a 4x5 foot piece of the second floor Confer-

ence Room ceiling fall down near the windows. It was restored after the exterior repairs were completed. The roofing company repaired the gutter and added a downspout. They feel that this will keep water from ice and rain from backing up through the gutter and leaking into the house. They also replaced thirty broken slates on the roof, front and back! Also, the chimney on the left of the

house was causing a room to have interior leaks due to excess condensation inside the chimney. In January, we had a stainless steel liner placed in the chimney flue and the second unused flue sealed. We re-capped the chimney and had the flashing reinforced. We are watching this closely and hoping that will take care of the problem! The Alumni and the University communities continue to use the Alumni House for events. It is always a delight when someone new visits. They love to wander around, explore the unique details, and appreciate the charm your House provides.
