Spread the Word not the Virus

I know we are all waiting and hoping for the day we can get

everyone together and worshiping again every Sunday.

What are we doing in the meantime? Many of our

members and friends are daily checking our church Facebook page.

It can be found on Facebook by going to: St. Paul’s United

Church of Christ, St. Marys, Ohio.

Click on our site. “Like” us and Follow us so you won’t miss

a single day of being church together. Carolyn in the church office

can assist you, if needed.

You’ll hear words of encouragement and inspiration from

me on the Mid-Day Connection. Check us out not only weekdays

but a Sunday worship service is provided at 10:30 a.m. and moving

to 9:00 a.m. on June 14th every Sunday on Facebook.

If you haven’t thought about it already, and many of you

have, in spite of being sheltered at home, this is an exciting time to

get the Word out to share with others how they can sign up to our

Facebook page. We are the church together beyond our church

walls and into our St. Marys community. Spread the Word so that

in spite of the virus we can connect with each other and be the

church together through our Facebook page.

Rhonda’s Reflections On the Journey: Being Church in a Pandemic

This year in our #ConnectSt.Paul’s theme, we

have discovered how important it is to connect

with one another. The coronavirus pandemic has

definitely presented us with many new ways to

be church, some difficult and some encouraging. Online Sunday

Connection allows us to provide members and guests alike with an

authentic worship experience while encountering new innovations

that feel right for the moment. Mid-Day Connection offers hope

and encouragement to our Facebook followers. Over the last

three months, church members intentionally connect with all

members, especially our homebound members and those without

email, making phone calls, writing cards, delivering packages,

praying for, and sending encouragement to members of our

community. Friendships are being made among members who did

not previously know one another. We are more aware how

important connection is as we support one another at a distance.

The Senior High Sunday School along with the Adult Forum have

maintained their connections through Zoom. It is not like it used to

be - but it is exactly what we need right now. At some point the

pandemic will pass and we'll be back together again. But we will

not be the same.

Many are asking when will the church building be open for worship

to resume. The Consistory has put in place a committee who is

developing policies and protocol on how to gather safely when the

time comes. Our priority is to care for one another and protect the

most vulnerable among us if we are to be the church God calls us

to be. Once those policies have been defined, the Consistory will

determine when in person worship will reconvene. We are also

pondering how what we have learned, during this time of

separation, can be put into practice to help us be church better

going forward. One thing is for sure - we have been and always will

be St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in St. Marys.

You are all in my prayers and in my heart. Rev. Rhonda

WAYS TO KEEP INFORMED DURING THIS PANDEMIC:

Updates will be through Call-Em-All, and also posted on our webpage: www.stpaulsuccsm.com and our Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/St-Pauls-United-Church-of-Christ-St-Marys-Ohio-244329649061259/

SUMMER WORSHIP TIME CHANGE

**NOTE NEW TIME** Please note that starting June 14, 2020, we will begin our summer

worship time of 10:30 a.m. on "Rally Day" Sunday, August 23rd, 2020. Please take note of the new Summer Worship Time as well as the earlier date for Rally Sunday.

STRENGTHEN THE CHURCH

Due to COVID-19 and church being closed, we are enclosing the Strengthen the Church special mission offering of the United Church of Christ. This offering builds the UCC’s future. It funds new congregations and renews existing ones. It supports programs for youth and young adults and nurtures current and future leaders. And it aids the God is Still Speaking Ministry to spread our message of inclusivity. An envelope for this special offering is included herein. Giving to this fund helps St. Paul’s UCC maintain their 5 for 5 record of giving in the UCC.

ATTENTION SUNDAY SCHOOL

PARENTS AND CHILDREN

Dear Parents and Children,

There are many programs on Cokesbury that pertain to church services. There are also more resources and activities on Cokesbury, https://www.cokesburykids.com/free-resources/church-at-home and on Pinterest, https://www.pinterest.com/pin/440297301055532748/.

Mark and Amy Dieringer conducted Sunday School with the

high school youth on Sunday mornings via Zoom. While Sunday School classes have technically ended for this year, they do plan on doing smaller activities throughout the summer.

Our VBS Sports Camp has been canceled for this year due

to the COVID-19. I would like to take a moment to thank Mark and Amy Dieringer and the ladies who were willing to come and help serve snacks and meals. Thank you also to the many church members that offered monetary support for the Sports Camp. And, thank you to the many youth and adults who offered their time and support to volunteer. Since we had to cancel this year, we are hoping to have VBS Sports Camp next year around the same time.

Thank you each and every one of you. In Christian love and support, Mary Holtzapple Christian Education Coordinator

Cans need to be rinsed out and brought to St. Paul’s - just leave

them behind the curtain under the stairs of the Creation Station door. If you have a lot of cans and would like to just take them on to recycling and donate the money, it may be just as easy once they are in your vehicle. Thank you for your support

Vacation Bible School Update: Amy Dieringer

• Keeping up with Governor DeWine and the status of VBS Sports Camp. Our hearts really want to do it, logically we believe that VBS wouldn’t be very well attended due to the ongoing COVID-19 Virus and potential new virus affecting children. Amy asked for thoughts and a decision from Consistory. Amy stated that they are not out of any money and the facilities are looking at reserving the same week next year for us to have VBS there. After much discussion. Linda McDonald made a motion to cancel the VBS this year. Virginia Burroughs seconded. Motion carried.

Christian Ed & Nurture: Mary Holtzapple

• Mary reported that she had scheduled cooks for the VBS Sports Camp, but will be calling them to let them know that VBS is canceled.

• Minutes from the April 5, 2020 meeting were reviewed. Kyle Opperman made a motion to approve the minutes. Lynda Hadley seconded. Motion carried.

Financial Report: David Dickman

• David reviewed the Financial Report for the month of April 2020. Due to being in the fields, David will make the necessary notes to the Budget Report and Carolyn will email out hopefully by the end of the week.

President’s Report: No report Pastor’s Report: Pastor Rhonda

• Pastor Rhonda reported that opening up the church will have to happen in phases and we will face difficult choices as to when and how we will go about opening the church back up. Rhonda stated that the health of our congregation is the most important factor and we do not want to take any unnecessary risks.

• Pastor Rhonda met with Ralph Heckler and Marsha Landers last Saturday to discuss the need to determine policies and protocol of what needs to be in place before we can even consider convening worship services. There will be guidelines that we have to follow. Jane Nuss is heading up a committee to set policies and protocol that will need to be in place before the Consistory can set a date to restart worship in the sanctuary. One of the items the committee is determining is the process required to clean and sanitize after each worship service. We will need to determine the quality of our worship experience. They are strongly suggesting everyone wear face masks, no singing of hymns, no choir, and no children’s ministry until children are

allowed to go back to school so as to not put any lives in jeopardy.

• Pastor Rhonda stated that she is happy with the responses she is receiving to her Mid-day Connection and online Sunday Services. Thank you to David Hainer for all of his help with putting the various pieces of the videos together.

• Rhonda stated that on Sunday, May 24th, she will invite everyone to light a candle and have bread and juice in front of them so that their home becomes a sanctuary and give them a sense of connection as we all partake in communion as a congregation from home.

• During the May 17th online Sunday Connection, we will be celebrating the graduation of our high school seniors. The Pastor has purchased a gift and card for each along with gifts from the Women’s Guild.

follows the guidelines required, the money will remain a “grant” and not a loan.

Trustees: Greg Walter

• Removal and disposal of the old elevette has been completed.

• They will be finishing up the painting of the three former window holes in the Library.

• During the ongoing pandemic, all water fountains and coffee makers have been turned off for safety purposes.

Elders: No Report Deacons: No Report Christian Mission and Outreach: No Report Personnel: No Report Elevator Committee: Lynda Hadley

• Things are pretty much on track. Glenn Hadley and the Trustees have removed the old elevette. Glenn learned yesterday that there was a mis-communication with the ordering of the new elevator and not getting it ordered. It has since been ordered and expect it to be here when it is supposed to be here. Finance wise, we received almost $2,700 last month, which leaves us with just under $45,000 that we still need. We did receive $500 from Midwest Electric.

Old Business: None New Business:

• Ralph stated he met with Pastor Rhonda and Marsha Landers over the weekend to discuss a few ideas regarding the restarting of worship. A committee is necessary to decide on policies and protocol to present to the Consistory for their determination of when the date to reconvene and under what guidelines, again keeping the health of our congregation as the top priority. Several ideas regarding actual location were discussed such as the pros and cons of holding worship in Fellowship Hall rather than in the sanctuary. This move would make it easier to clean and

sanitize as well as apply the social distancing rule. We will need to post hand washing signs throughout the church. Ralph did obtain two half-gallon jugs of hand sanitizer. It is not gel, it is liquid form. When we return to in the building worship, we will have a member standing at the doors making hand sanitizer a requirement when they enter. There will be no shaking of hands, no hugs, no child care and masks will need to be worn. The only restroom that will be open will be the Women’s restroom across from the kitchen. We also want to remind people that it is OK TO MISS CHURCH. We do not want to take any chances of spreading any virus/germs. Ralph asked the Trustees to check with our church insurance to see if the church is liable should anyone become ill. Greg Walter stated that they will look into that matter. Linda McDonald stated that we need to reiterate to the congregation that if they have a cough, shortness of breath, or fever, to just stay home and do not come to church. Joni Leffel asked if we can still video the services to be shown via the internet or on TV. David Hainer replied that is highly possible as it is currently being done now. David stated that he will review that matter with Rich Spencer.

• Jennifer Ginter asked Consistory about the rental use of Fellowship Hall.

• Carolyn received an email from ASPIRE/GED asking us about possibly returning to the classroom in August. After discussion among Consistory, Carolyn is to get back with ASPIRE/GED and let them know that we will address the matter closer to August and also abide by what Governor DeWine has set into place regarding kids returning to school.

• Carolyn received a phone call from the local Cub Scout Leader asking about the use of Fellowship Hall for their Pinewood Derby. After much discussion, President Ralph stated he will call the Leader at home to obtain more

clarification as to what they have in mind and that Scouts would also fall in line with what Governor DeWine has set into place and kids not being in school due to the virus.

• Confirmation is on hold until further notice. Amy Keller has sent a letter to all parents.

• David Hainer has provided videos of our past two worship services to Telephone Service Company for broadcasting at our regular scheduled days and times. David continues to do his Sunday morning class at 9 a.m. as well.

• Reminder that Summer Worship starts June 14th and will start at 9 a.m.

• Pastor Rhonda suggested that Mary look into the curriculum called “Orange” and to possibly send out a Sunday School newsletter giving the parents and children updates. Rhonda also stated that Cokesbury is offering free children’s ministry videos. Mary will look into these suggestions.

President Ralph asked if there are any other committees needing to report. There being no further regular business, Jane Nuss made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Kyle Opperman seconded. Motion carried. The meeting adjourned at 7:24 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Ralph Heckler, 2020 Consistory President Carolyn Garrison, Administrative Assistant
