Master Data Quality

Introduction

• Founded in 1993• 60+ employees located in Bergen, Aberdeen, Malaysia and

Houston• Deliver cloud-based solutions for managing of technical

information• Deliver services for handling of material and equipment data• Supplier of EqHub software, services and implementation

support to the Norwegian Continental Shelf• Deliver all material master codification services to Statoil• Frame agreements with EPIM (Norsk Olje & Gass), Statoil, Shell,

BP and AkerBP• Deliver in addition services to ConocoPhillips, Woodside and

Samsung• Part of “political” dialogue regarding catalogue services to UK Oil

& Gas and Australia (“The EqHub Model”).

Yngve NilsenSharecat Solutions• Bachelor in finance and management from Norwegian School of

Economics (NHH)• Mathematics and informatics from University of Bergen (UiB)• Worked as team leader, director and VP Sales & Business

Development for Sharecat Solutions. • Manager for EqHub implementation for EPIM for three years• Worked with Asset and Master data for over 17 years

• Master in Physics from University in Bergen (UiB)• Director of Sales & Marketing in Sharecat Solutions• Director of Maintenance and Logistics from OCS• CEO in Lohne Skandinavia• Broad experience from project management and software

sales and implementation

All data in the material master related to:• Material and equipment information• Bill of Material • Equipment information and documentation• Standardization and classification of equipment and materials• Manufacturer and vendor information• Functional location data• Link and interaction between the data elements

Our “Master data” definition

Definitions

Typical dataMaterial master data:

• MAKT Material Descriptions

• MARA General Material Data

• MARC Plant Data for Material

• MARD Storage Location Data for Material

• MAST Material to BOM Link

• MKPF Header- Material Document

• A501 Plant/Material

• LFA1 Vendor Master (General section)

• LFB1 Vendor Master (Company Code

• EQUI Equipment Codes

Functional Location register (FLOC)

• IFLOT – Functional Location

• EQKT – Equipment Short Texts

• EQUI – Equipment master data

• IFLOTX – Functional Location

Industries

• Global Oil and Gas industry

• Global Power industry

• Studies of over 100 asset registers

• Studies of over 15 operators material

masters

• In depth surveys for 4 major oil and

gas operators

Our general experience:

• Findings from more than 100 asset registers

• Only 50% of maintainable tags without part

numbers

• Between 15% and 50% of all maintainable tags

with part numbers

• Findings from more than 15 material masters

• Only 40% of materials established in a structure with correct information and not duplicated

• Between 40% and 50% of all materials are

duplicated, missing information, unstructured, not linked to parent data etc.

Asset Registers Material Masters

Typical findings – Asset Registers

Typical findings in Asset Registers:• Missing manufacturers• Missing part numbers• Missing link to Equipment• Missing link to Bill of Materials• Missing link to material numbers

• “Midas Sensor” is not a part number

• “Cooper” is not the correct manufacturer name

• GHG 418 817 is not a proper part number

• Tag no 21PI5123 is missing part number

• Ability to secure deliveries through the data delivery

processes in projects

• Unclear delivery requirements

• Wrong and lack of clear standards

Typical findings – Material Masters

TYPICAL MASTER DATA CHALLENGES:• Missing manufacturers• Missing part numbers• Duplicated information• Missing descriptions• Manufacturer inconsistency• Missing classification

Good quality data

Poor quality or data missing

Challenges with poor data quality

• Ordering of wrong parts• Time used to find correct information in the ERP solutions• Use of materials on stock• Cost of purchasing, frame agreements, buy the same part

over and over • Effective warehousing• Time spent on planning and maintenance • Reduced Asset Integrity• Reduced security issues

“My KPI is to reduce the volume in the

Warehouse with 10% without throwing

materials away” - Manager

Our solutions and the future

A technical information repository for operators, contractors and suppliers

EqHub gives access to pre-qualified, classified and quality assured information when needed.EqHub provides a technical information library for standard equipment according to ISO 15926. Information is entered by the supplier and through a verification process. The validity of the documentation is guaranteed through an annual process that imposes the suppliers to verify that their documentation is updated and according to ISO 15926. If so, an EqHub certification is given to the relevant supplier and in EqHub for relevant equipment documentation

Our solutions and the future

Standardization

• The equipment classification is based on

NORSOK standards

• Equipment classes and data properties is

mapped against the ISO 15926 standard for

data exchange

• Implementation of standards is a key for

security of quality data

Our solutions and the future

If you «Clean up» the material data

• The “O-ring” approach…

• The clean up gone mad… (20.000.000 project

on “make up”)

• Only focus on the Material Master, not the

connections or the use.

• Start with the asset, what is installed?

• What do you really need to operate your asset?

• Establish data delivery routines and reuse data

• Understand the operations, maintenance and

project phases

Material master data interaction:

The material master needs to be aligned

with the Warehouse, the Assets and work

processes!
