New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) will send a team to Chhattisgarh to probe the deaths of 13 women in a mass sterilisation camp organised in the state.

New Delhi: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Chhattisgarh government directing it to file a report within two weeks over the death of women following "botched-up" sterilisation in Bilaspur.
According to an official statement released here today, the Commission has issued a notice to the state government, through the Principal Secretary of Health & Family Welfare calling for a report on the incident within two weeks.
The notice was issued after the Commission took suo motu cognisance of media reports as well as complaints that about 12 women died and more than 70 others were in a serious condition following sterilisation on November 8 at a government-organised camp in Bilaspur district.
Allegedly, more than 83 women were operated within six hours using infected surgical tools, according to the statement.
The women were admitted to different hospitals after they complained of complications following sterilisation surgery at the camp held at a private hospital in Pendari village on outskirts of Bilaspur town on Saturday.

A doctor, accused of botched-up tubectomies leading to the death of 13 women at a
hospital in Chhattisgarh, was arrested on Thursday.
Dr RK Gupta, who operated upon 80 women in Nemi Chand Jain Hospital in Bilaspur,
however told reporters that he was being made "a scapegoat."
"Not only me, the entire district administration is responsible for the deaths," Gupta,
looking distraught, told reporters in Bilaspur.
He claimed the surgeries were successful but women may have died of spurious
medicines. "The medicines should be examined," he said.
Dr RK GuptaHe also claimed that he surrendered before police. "I was not arrested," he
said.
Gupta was suspended on Tuesday on the orders of Chief Minister Raman Singh, who
also ordered that an FIR be filed against him.
On Saturday, 80 women were operated upon in a span of five hours at the medical
camp. All operations were conducted by Dr Gupta. Eleven of the women died within 72
hours of the operation. The rest are fighting for their lives.
The death toll in the botched-up sterilisation rose to 13 on Wednesday, with an official
saying 32 of the women are still in a critical condition.
In Jagdalpur too, three women who underwent sterilisation surgery had to be admitted
to the ICU after their condition worsened.
In another incident, two tribal women in Pendra village of Bilaspur district fell ill after
undergoing sterilisation surgery at a tubectomy camp and have been admitted to a
hospital in critical condition. Twenty-eight women were operated upon in the camp.
In Bakawand block in Bastar division, three women, who were operated upon for
sterilisation, had to be admitted to ICU when their condition deteriorated after the
surgery. They too had undergone tubectomies in a government organised camp.
Hemant Singh, husband of one of the victims, said: "The women complained of pain in
stomach after surgery. All three were taken to ICU. Initially, the officials did not disclose
their condition."
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Wednesday asked the Chhattisgarh
government to explain the deaths.
"The commission has issued notice to the government of Chhattisgarh, through its
principal secretary, health and family welfare (department), calling for a report into the
incident within two weeks," an NHRC statement said.
The Chhattisgarh Congress has demanded resignation of the chief minister and state
health minister.
A team of doctors from All India Institute of Medical Sciences reached Bilaspur on
Wednesday to probe the incident.

The National Human Right Commission (NHRC) on Wednesday issued a notice to the Chhattisgarh Government in the deaths of 12 women in an sterilisation camp in Bilaspur. Taking suo moto cognisance of the incident, the NHRC ordered the government to submit a report within two weeks.
"The National Human Rights Commission has taken cognizance of media reports as well as complaints that about 12 women died and more than 70 others were in a serious condition following sterilization on the 8th November, 2014 at a Government organised camp in District Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh. Allegedly, more than 83 women were operated within six hours using infected surgical tools. It has issued a notice to the Government of Chhattisgarh, through its Principal Secretary, Health & Family Welfare calling for a report into the incident within two weeks," the NHRC statement said.
Meanwhile, the Chhattisgarh High Court also sought a detailed report within ten days from the state government on the botched sterilisation surgeries in Bilaspur district, after it took suo moto cognisance of the the incident, which left 11 women dead and many critical.
The court has appointed two advocates-- Salim Kazia and Sunita Jain-- as amicus curiae (friend of the court) to assist it on the tragedy.
The division bench comprising Justice T P Sharma and Justice Inder Singh Uboweja took a serious note of the news reports on the death of 11 women after tubectomies at a government-organised sterilisation camp in Pedari village of Takhatpur block on Saturday, advocate Kazi told PTI.
Questioning the state government on why such incidents are repeatedly happening, the bench asked them to submit a detailed report on the sterilisation incident within 10 days before the court, Kazi said.
The court has also asked the government to provide best possible treatment to the affected women admitted in various hospitals and also take care of their relatives.
The court also asked the state government to apprise the amicus curiae on the day-to-day developments so that they can further brief the court, he said.
On November 8, about 83 women had undergone surgeries at a sterilisation camp held at Nemichand Jain Cancer and Research Centre at Pendari village in Takhatpur.
Later, almost all of them, aged below 32, were hospitalised after they developed post-operative complications.
While, 12 of them died in the past two days, 69 have taken ill and some are in critical condition.
A three-member committee has been constituted to investigate the incident even as four health officials including two senior doctors - Chief Medical and Health Officer of Bilaspur R K Bhange, laparoscopic surgeon Dr R K Gupta, State Programme Convener, family planning, Dr K C Urao and Block Medical Officer, Takhatpur, Dr Pramod Tiwari - were suspended in this connection.
An FIR has also been lodged against the surgeon under whose supervision the sterilisation camp was organised.
The state government has announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the kin of each of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to those undergoing treatment, the cost of which will be borne by the government.
