Indian Institute ofManagement Calcutta( ), abbreviated asIIMCalcuttaorIIMC, isapublicbusiness school located inKolkata (Calcutta),WestBengal,India.ItwasthefirstIndianInstituteofManagementtobeestablished.[1]ItisconsistentlyrankedasoneofthebestbusinessschoolsinIndiaandtheAsiaPacificregion.[2][3][4][5]

Established in 1961,[1] IIM Calcutta is a fully autonomous institution and offers severalpostgraduate and doctoral programmes in management, as well as a bouquet of executiveeducationprogrammes.Inadditiontoitsmainacademicprogrammes,IIMCisalsoengagedinresearch,consultancy,seminars,academicconferencesandresearchpublications.[6][7][8]

IIMCalcutta'sprogramsareaccreditedbyAACSBandAMBA:itistheonlyIndianbschoolwithboththeseglobalaccreditations.[9]ItisalsotheonlyIndianbusinessschoolthatisamemberoftheGlobalAlliance inManagementEducation (CEMS).[10] IIMC is especially renowned for itsfinancerelated courses, and iswidely considered to be one of the best business schools in theworldforfinance.[11][12][13][14]

AfterIndiabecameindependentin1947,thePlanningCommissionwasentrustedtooverseeanddirect thedevelopmentof thenation.Indiagrewrapidly inthe1950s,and inthe late1950stheCommissionstartedfacingdifficultiesinfindingsuitablemanagersforthelargenumberofpublicsectorenterprisesthatwerebeingestablishedinIndiaasapartof its industrialpolicy.Tosolvethis problem, the Planning Commission in 1959 invited Professor George Robbins of theUniversityofCalifornia tohelp insettingupanall India level instituteofmanagementstudies.Basedonhisrecommendations,theIndiangovernmentdecidedtosetuptwoelitemanagementinstitutes,namedIndianInstitutesofManagement.[15]

IndianInstituteofManagementCalcuttawas the firstof these IIMs,andwasestablishedon13November1961[1]incollaborationwiththeMITSloanSchoolofManagement,thegovernmentofWestBengal,theFordFoundationand the Indian industry. Its firstDirectorwasK.T.Chandy,the former Chairman ofHindustanUnilever Limited. During the initial years of IIM Calcutta,several renowned academics and visionaries formed part of its core team, including PaulSamuelson,JagdishSheth,JKSengupta,PeterSKing,andThomasHill.[16]

Initsinitialyears,IIMCalcuttaoperatedfromEmeraldBower,BarrackpurTrunkRoad,Kolkata.The foundationstoneof thecurrentIIMCcampus inJoka,Kolkata,was laidbyMorarjiDesai,whowasthentheDeputyPrimeMinisterofIndiaon15Dec1968.Theinstitutemovedtothenewcampusin1975.[17]

IIMCalcutta'sPostGraduateProgramme(PGP)isequivalenttotheMBA,andiscomposedoftwodistinctacademicprogrammes:thePGDMandPGDCM.[24][25]

ThePostGraduateDiploma inManagement(PGDM) is a fulltime, twoyear residentialacademic programme designed to produce general managers and highlevel businessadministratorswithabroadstrategicvision.ThisprogrammeusuallystartsinJuneandrunstillApril of the second year. PGDM at IIM Calcutta is a general, fully integrated managementprogramme, and includes courses in Accounting, Behavioural sciences, Finance, Economics,Human Resource Management, Marketing, Business operations, Public policy, Strategy andGeneralmanagement.[26]

The Post Graduate Diploma in Computer aided Management (PGDCM), started in1994, is similar to the PGDM, but with a special emphasis on Information technology and itsbusinessapplications.[16] It isaimedat creatingbusinessprofessionalswhoknowhow toapplyInformationandcommunicationtechnology(ICTs)inbusinessmanagement.

The Post Graduate Programme, including both PGDM and PGDCM, is composed of a corecurriculumcomposedofcompulsorycreditandnoncreditcourses inthefirstyear,andasetofelectivecoursesinthesecondyear,chosenaccordingtothewishesofthestudent.Thefirstyearcurriculum isdesigned tohelp students indevelopinga solidbaseofbusiness fundamentals incoursesinallareasofmanagement,whilethesecondyearisstructuredsothatstudentscanselectcoursesoftheirchoicefromacrossdiversefields.Inthesecondyear,studentscantakeuptermpapersunderfacultysupervisioninordertodelvedeeplyintospecifictopics.

Thetwoyearsof thePostGraduateProgrammearedividedbyamandatorysummerinternshipprogramme that typically lasts between eight to ten weeks in AprilMay of the year aftercommencementoftheprogramme.

CEMSMastersinInternationalManagement(CEMSMIM)[edit]

In 2012, IIM Calcutta became a member of the Global Alliance in Management Education(CEMS). As a member of CEMS, IIM Calcutta offers theCEMSMasters in InternationalManagement(CEMSMIM)degree.SelectedstudentsfromthePGPprogrammewhoalsosatisfytherequirementsforCEMSaregiventheoptionoftheMIMasanadditionaldegree.

FellowProgrammeinManagement(FPM)[edit]

TheFellowProgrammeinManagement(FPM)ofIIMCalcuttaisafulltimeDoctorallevelprogrammeinmanagement.[27]Started in1971, thisprogrammeisaimedatpreparingstudentsforcareers inteachingorresearchindifferentdisciplinesofmanagement,aswellasforcareersoutsideacademics thatdemandahighdegreeof researchandanalyticalabilities.Studentswhocomplete this programme are awarded the titleFellow of the Indian Institute ofManagementCalcutta.

TheFPMProgrammetypicallyconsistsoftwophases:courseworkwhichlastsfortwoyears(6terms) during which the FPM students take courses along with students undergoing the PostGraduate Programme (PGP), and the dissertation.[28] Students who complete the courseworkphase with the required academic records have to pass the Comprehensive QualifyingExamination (CQE)beforemovingon to thedissertationphase.TheFPMprogrammeprovidesthe opportunity to pursue academic or corporate career with a focus on research.[29] ThisprogrammeisofficiallyrecognisedasequivalenttoaPhDbytheGovernmentofIndiaandbytheAssociationofIndianUniversities.

ThePGPEXProgram isIIMCalcutta'sFullTimeMBAprogramforexecutives.[31]Introducedin December 2006, it is a fully residential, oneyear intensive program designed to developexperienced and ambitious executives for leadership positions in global organisations.[32] Theprogramemphasisespracticalproblemsolvingandthedevelopmentofcrossculturalskills,andis structured as an appropriatemix of classroom lectures, case studies, and individual & teamprojects&assignmentsaimedatimprovingcommunication,teambuildingandleadershipskills.[31][32]Participantsintheprogramarerequiredtoundertakeeitheranindustryinternshiporaninternationalprojectduringan international study tour foraperiodof around fourweeks.Theprogram is delivered by IIMC faculty as well as internationally renowned faculty from otherinstitutions.

Oneof thehighlightsof thePGPEXprogram isLattice, theannualbusiness symposiumat IIMCalcutta organized by PGPEX students. Another notable component of the PGPEX program is'Being theCEO',which is a series of lectures byCxO's addressing the programparticipants onmattersrelatedtostrategy,executionandtheirroleinalltheactions.

More than 5 years ofmanagerial/professional experience post bachelor's degree is essential toapply in PGPEX. The average experience of the class is around 9 years.[citationneeded] A validGMAT score (taken within last 36 months of Application date) is also required. It is a oneyear, rigorous programmewith a heavyfocus on the manufacturing sector, and is drawn on the lines of MIT's Leaders for GlobalOperations(LGO) (formerlycalledLeadersForManufacturing(LFM))programme, run jointlyby MIT Sloan School of Management and MIT's School of Engineering.[34] Candidates withsubstantialprofessionalexperienceareselectedforthisprogrammeeveryyear,andthesestudentsspendtheoneyearattendingcoursesinallthethreeinstitutes,andvisitindustriesandundergointernships. In2007,aMemorandumofUnderstandingwassignedbythegovernmentsofIndiaandJapan,accordingtowhichtheJapanesegovernmentwouldextenditssupporttothetransferofJapaneseexpertise and visits to manufacturing centres of excellence in Japan for the PGPEXVLMprogramme.[33]

Auditorium[edit]

TheAuditoriumatIIMCalcutta,popularlycalledtheAudi,isconsideredtobethebestamonganyacademic campus in India, and hosts most of the important functions in the campus like theconvocation,conferences,studenteventsandtalks.[41]Thefacilityseats750peopleandwasbuiltatacostofover90million(US$1.4million).[17] It is fullyairconditionedand isequippedwithultramodernequipmentincludingprofessionalaudioandvisualsystems.[41]

Library[edit]

TheIIMClibraryisnamedBidhanChandraRoyLibraryorBCRoyMemorialLibrary,afterBidhanChandraRoy, the secondChiefMinister of the state ofWestBengal and the firstChairman of the institute. The library is primarily envisioned tomeet the requirements of theIIMC's academic programmes. The largest management library in Asia, it was started with agrant from the Ford Foundation.[17] It houses over 160,000 volumes and also subscribes tohundreds of management journals and provides access to a large collection of electronicdatabases. The library processes and functions are fully computerized and in addition to printmaterial,itprovidesaccesstomorethan40,000onlinefulltextjournals.[42]

TheManagementCenterforHumanValues(MCHV)isaimedat"integratingthesoftandsubtledimensionofhumanvalueswiththemainstreamofskilldominatedmanagementeducation".[17]

Itsmissionistointegratethesoftandsubtledimensionofhumanvalueswiththemainstreamofskilldominatedmanagement education.The center is located in separatebuildings in a serenepart of the campus, surrounded by beautiful gardens. Its striking conical buildings arearchitecturally striking from theoutsideandaredesigned tobequite sanctumsof learningandcontemplationontheinside.

EstablishedinNovember2008,theFinancialResearchandTradingLabatIIMCalcuttagivesanopportunitytostudentsandfacultymemberstotestfinancialmodelswith"live"informationfromthemajormarketsoftheworldlikeIndia'sNationalStockExchange,MultiCommodityExchange,NationalCommodityandDerivativesExchange,BombayStockExchangeandBloomberg.[43]Thelab is the only one of its kind in India, and has advanced industrystandard equipment andfacilitiesincluding51tradingterminals,tradingsimulatorsandBloombergTerminals.[44]Thelabis aimed to help in academic programmes, research on financial markets, product design andtesting,executiveeducationandinorganisinginternationalandnationalconferencesonfinance.[45] The laboratory gives students a handson experience in financialmarket data analysis andmodelling,andalsohelpsinadvancedappliedresearchinfinancialmarkets.

NewCampus[edit]

TheNewCampusiscomposedoftwolarge"houses"eachaccommodating175studentsinprivateroomswithattachedbalconies.AmultilevelStudentCommonswithtwolevelsofdiningseating200 covers on each floor and a large recreation area on the top floor serves the intellectualcommunity.AnExecutiveCentrewith200suitesandrooms,havingtrainingandsyndicateroomsandwellfittedexecutivediningandrecreationareasiswellunderconstruction.

Thisnew residential campus is connected to theexisting campusviaan innovative steelbridgewhichwasawardedthemostinnovativesteelstructureinIndiain2010bytheIndianInstituteofSteelResearchandDevelopment,MinistryofIndustries,GOI.

In the main campus a new Academic wing was opened in early 2011 that accommodatesamphitheater lecturehalls, computer laboratories, incubationareas, facultyoffices, class roomsandsyndicateroomsonfivelevels.AnewAmphitheaterComplexwithfivelargeamphitheatersofwhichtwoarefor200,150and100seatsrespectivelyshallenhancetheteachingcapacityoftheInstitute. These striking structureswill enclose the AcademicQuadrangle thatwill become thecentralfocusofthenewcampus.

TheclubleveragesIIMC'sstrongalumninetworkandtraditionalrelationshipswithmanagementconsulting firms to arrange various networking events that help students interact withpractitioners in the consulting industry to gain a better understanding of the industry. TheConsultingCluborganisesvariouscompetitionsandevents,andpublishesanelectronicmagazinecalled The Joka Strategist. It also partners with peer groups in IIM Ahmedabad and IIMBangaloreforamagazinenamedAUDIRE.[50]

InternetSolutionsGroup[edit]

TheInternetSolutionsGroup(ISG)atIIMCalcuttaisastudentteamthatworkstomakelifeoncampus more convenient and efficient through the use of internet based applications andtechnology.The ISG is an entirely studentrunentrepreneurial effort that touches almost everyaspectofcampuslifeatIIMCalcutta.Composedentirelyofstudentvolunteers,theISGisahighlymotivated team that drives innovation, development, improves workflows and facilitates thedevelopmentofcuttingedgetechnologyforthecollegewebsiteandintranet.[51]

InitiativeforCommunityAction(INCA)[edit]

INCAorINitiativeforCommunityActionisaninitiativeofthestudentsoftheIndianInstituteofManagement Calcutta focused on social work and community action.[56] Modeled on theInitiativeonSocialEnterprise(ISE)atHarvardBusinessSchool,INCA'sactivitiesareprimarilyinthe form of free management consulting service to voluntary organisations, NGOs and othersdoingusefulsocialwork.[57]

OutTh!nk is a student club that focuses on puzzles and brainteasers.[58] It organises variouscompetitionsbasedonlogicalpuzzles,strategyandgametheory.TheflagshipeventofOutTh!nkisPixellatedChaos, a competition held as a part of Intaglio, thatmixes the elements of gametheory,collusionandtreasurehunt.[59]

OneoftheoldestquizzingsocietiesinIndia,ICQCofficiallyorganisesquizzeswithinthecollegeonaregularbasisandconductsquizzesonIIMCalcuttasbehalfduringoffcampuscollegefests.MembersoftheICQChavedoneexceedinglywellinquizzesalloverthecountryandhaveearnedgreatreputeandrespectinquizzingcircles.Recently,JayashreeMohanka,analumnusfromthe1983batchwascrownednationalchampionbywinning theMahaquizzer title inJune2012.Bydoingso,shebecamethefirsteverwomancontestanttowintheprestigioustitle.[60]

The SystemsConsulting Club of IIMCalcutta provides a platform for prospectivemanagers togain experiencewith reallife issues and problems in technologyrelated areas.[61] The flagshipeventoftheclubisEnigmatics,anannualtechnologyquizthatpitsthetopmanagementstudents

Intaglio is the annual international Business school summit hosted by Indian Institute ofManagement Calcutta. The flagship event of IIMC, it was started in 1992 as the NationalBusinessSchoolMeet(NBSM),[74][75]andiswidelyacknowledgedtobethebiggestBschoolmeetin India.[76] Intaglio, usually held over a 3day weekend in January, serves as a platform

facilitating the interaction of eminent personalities from the industry, academia, media andgovernment,holdingconferences,workshopsandseminarsbyexpertsindifferentfieldsonawiderange of topics.[77][78][79][80] Intaglio also includes a large number of competitive and noncompetitive events for Bschool students, which attract participation from worldrenownedinstitutions from around the world, like Asian Institute of Technology, Australian GraduateSchool of Management, CEIBS, ESCP Europe, Harvard Business School, other IIMs, LondonBusiness School, MIT Sloan, National University of Singapore, University of Toronto and theWhartonSchool.[80][81]Asamarkofitssuperiorqualityofeventsandprocesses,Intaglioin2007became the first event of its kind in India to achieve the ISO9001:2000certification from theInternational Organization for Standardization.[82][83] In 2010, Intaglio got the distinction ofbeingthefirstcarbonneutralBschooleventinIndia.[84]
