Dear Members of the IIM Kanpur Chapter and Friends,
IIM Kanpur has continued to grow in 20172018, as in previous years. The current executive
committee took over in August 2017 and organized several events in past one year. It received
huge support from all the past and present members and is immensely thankful to them.
Some of our achievements in the current year are as follows:
• Prof. N. K. Batra Metals and Materials Quiz was organized and the graduate
students also put up some materials science based demonstration for the students
(August 6, 2017).
• International Conference on Iron and Steel Making, (December 2017).
• IIM Foundation day was celebrated at IIT Kanpur (February 17, 2017).
• IIM sponsored lecture by Dr. Ankit Kumar, Arizona State University (May 23, 2018).
• Annual General Meeting (AGM) of IIMKC (May 23, 2018).
The details of the various events are enclosed in the report, herewith.
The success of the aforementioned events goes rightfully to the energetic student members
who worked very hard to make the events successful. In the end, I would like to thank all the
executive members and volunteers who have worked tirelessly throughout the year to take the
IIM Kanpur Chapter to greater heights. I am certain that everyone, including me would extend
the same support to the new executive council which will take over in August 2018.

Executive Committee (20172018)In the Annual General Body Meeting of IIM Kanpur Chapter (2017), following members were elected for the executive committee of the Kanpur Chapter for the year 2017-2018.
Executive Committee (20182019)Annual General Meeting of IIM Kanpur Chapter took place on May 23, 2018 (details about the event can be found in the later part of this document). The following office berries were chosen for the year 20182019. The new committee will take charge from Aug 2018.

Prof. N. K. Batra Metals & Materials Quiz – 2017 was held at the Lecture Hall 16, IIT
Kanpur on Aug. 06, 2017. Similar to the previous occasions, this year also the event was
jointly organized by the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Indian Institute of
Technology (IIT) Kanpur, Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) Kanpur chapter and the University
Institute of Engineering and Technology, CSJM University, Kanpur. Prof. Anish Upadhyaya,
HOD Materials Science and Engineering, IIT Kanpur and Chaiman, IIM Kanpur Chapter
inaugurated the program and welcomed the participants. He briefly mentioned the valuable
contributions of Prof. N. K. Barta in the field of materials science and engineering. He also
reminisced about previous editions of the event, which turned 18 this year. Prof. Kantesh
Balani from Department of Materials Science and Engineering, IIT Kanpur, delivered an
exciting lecture on “Biomaterials for Hip Joints”, explaining the science and engineering
involved behind fabrication and the state of the art technology developed in his research
group. Undergraduate and postgraduate students of IIT Kanpur also organized a nice
exhibition, highlighting the research work in Materials Science and Engineering department of
IIT Kanpur.
Total 24 teams, compirsing of 48 students of class XI and XII, from 12 schools of Kanpur
participated in the competition. Initially, out of the 24 teams, 16 were eliminated based on a
short written quiz and remaining 8 teams were shortlisted for the next stage. In the second
stage, each team was asked 4 questions, pertaining to materials science and top 6 teams
proceeded to the next stage. The third stage included visual round, buzzer round and and
dumb charade round and top 3 teams progressed to the final stage. The final round was
decided based on a buzzer round and a rapid fire round, in which Mr. Divyansh Sharma and
Mr. Shubham Dixit of Onkareshwar SVNIC were decleared the winners of Prof. N. K. Batra
Metals & Materials Quiz – 2017 and Ms. Nandini Jain and Mr. Saransh Srivastava of DPS
Aazad Nagar were decleared the runnersup. These two teams will now participate in the
National level Prof. Brahm Prakash Memorial Quiz competition to be held at the Indira
Gandhi Center for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam on September 09, 2017.
The quiz was organized under the guidance of Prof. Anish Upadhyaya, Chairman, Prof.
Somnath Bhowmick, Secretary and Prof. Nilesh Prakash Gurao, Student Advisor of IIM
Kanpur chapter. Prof. Sarang Ingole, Treasurer, IIM Kanpur chapter coordinated the
preparations for the quiz. The grand success of the event was ensured by unrelenting and
enthusiastic efforts of the students of IIM Kanpur chapter, led by Ms. Rani Agarwal, Mr.
Nomendra Rajput and Mr. Nikhil Bansal of IIT Kanpur.

IIM Foundation Day
Every year IIM Kanpur chapter celebrates the IIM foundation day. This year, it was celebrated
on 17th February.
Program
10:30: Welcome speech by the Chairman, IIM Kanpur Chapter.
10:35: Technical talk to be delivered by Dr. Seshadri Seetharaman , Professor Emeritus, Royal
Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden and Distinguished Visiting Professor, IITKanpur.
Title: Unconventional Solutions in Materials Processing.
11:10: Technical talk to be delivered by Dr. Alberto Conejo, Professor, Instituto Tecnológico de
Morelia (ITM) and Distinguished Visiting Professor, IITKanpur.
Title: Use of Direct Reduced Iron in the Electric Arc Furnace.
11:45: Vote of thanks by Secretary, IIM Kanpur Chapter.
11:50: High tea.
The event started at 10:30 am with the welcome address by Prof. Anish Upadhyaya
(Chairman, IIM Kanpur Chapter). He emphasized the pioneering role that Indian Institute of
Metals has played in making India a leader in production of metals and materials. He briefly
mentioned about the achievements of the IIM Kanpur Chapter in the recent past. After this, Dr.
Seshadri Seetharaman , Professor Emeritus, Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm,
Sweden and Distinguished Visiting Professor, IITKanpur delivered a lecture on
“Unconventional Solutions in Materials Processing”. Finally, Dr. Alberto Conejo, Professor,
Instituto Tecnológico de Morelia (ITM) and Distinguished Visiting Professor, IITKanpur
delivered a lecture on the “Use of Direct Reduced Iron in the Electric Arc Furnace”.
Outreach Activities
Technical talks, sponsored by IIM Kanpur Chapter, wre organized at CSJM. Lectures were
delivered by the following PG students: Mirtunjay Kumar, Rupesh Chafle, Reshma Sonkusare,
Rani Agarwal, Nisheeth Kumar and Ashish Gupta and by Prof. Nilesh Gurao.
IIM Sponsored Lecture
IIM Kanpur chapter organized a lecture on “Phasefield modeling of microstructural pattern
formation in eutectoid steels”, delivered by Dr. Ankit Kumar, Assistant Professor, Arizona
State University on May 23, 2018. This was attended by several students and faculty
members, not only from Department of Materials Science and Engineering, but also from other
departments of IIT Kanpur as well.
Annual General Meeting
Annual general meeting of IIM Kanpur Chapter took place on May 18, 2017. The new office
bearers were elected in the Annual General Meeting (the list has been given in the beginning of

during 201718 were updated by Prof. Somnath Bhowmick, Secretary, IIM Kanpur chapter.
Financial documents of the IIM Kanpur Chapter were presented by Prof. Sarang Ingole,
treasurer, IIM Kanpur chapter. This was followed by election of executive committee members
for 201819 and this event was officiated by Prof. Amarendra Singh. Finally, Prof. D. P. Mishra,
Department of Aerospace Engineering, IIT Kanpur delivered a lecture on “Saga of Steel and
Iron Technology of Ancient India”.
