Part -1(answer any three) 12 marks

1. List the advantages and disadvantages of a micrometer and a vernier caliper.

2. Draw a neat sketch of an outside micrometer and label it.

3. Differentiate between ‘Line standards’ and ‘End standards’. Give examples of these

two types of standards.

4. Explain with the aid of diagrams, a typical application of the dial indicator for settingup purposes on the drilling machine.

5. What do you mean by interchangeable manufacture? Explain clearly.

6. Explain why a micrometer provides a more positive reading than Vernier Caliper.

Part –II (Answer any three) 12 marks

7. A crank and slotted lever mechanism used in a shaper has a centre distance of 300mm

 between the centre of oscillation of the slotted lever and the centre of rotation of thecrank. The radius of the crank is 120mm.Find the ratio of the time of cutting to the time

of return stroke.

8. Determine the angle at which the compound rest will be swivelled to turn taper on the

given work piece having the following dimensions(i) large diameter 60mm (ii)small

diameter 40mm(iii)Length of the work piece 300mm

9. With a neat sketch describe the crank and slotted lever quick return mechanism in a

shaper.

10. Calculate the change gears to cut a single stud thread of 3mm pitch on a centre lathe,

having a lead screw of 6mm pitch.

11. Draw a line diagram of an engine lathe and label it.

12. With a neat sketch describe the process of up milling and down milling.

13. What are the functions of coated electrode?

14. Sketch the three types of flames used in gas welding. Give the uses of each.

15. Differentiate between welding and brazing.

16. Define “Weldability”. What do you mean by weld zone and Heat affected zone inwelding?

17. Explain with neat sketches about the arc penetration in case of DCSP, DCRP and AC

supply.

18. Discuss the name of the materials used, of the following, with proper reasons

I) Gears of a lathe,II) Water pipe,

III) Connecting rod of an I.C engine,

IV) Packaging materials used for rose flower.

19. Discuss the various pattern allowances.

20. With a neat sketch explain the simple blanking operation. (only sketches arerequired).

21. What is the function of a riser? Write the requirements of a good riser.
