    INTRODUCTION

    The First World War (1914-1918)

    India a British colony, supported the war effort in a bid to gain Dom

    Since India desired a greater responsibility and political autonomy, to share the burden of the Imperial defense.

    India contributed immensely in the war effort in both men and mat

    Indian soldiers were rewarded for their contriution.

    State forces also participated with the India Army overseas in the w

    REASONS BEHIND INDIAS PARTICIPATION

    Growing political unrest in India

    Demand for self government

    Tilak and other nationalist leaders began to support the wareffort, without realizing the actual agenda behind the war.

    Financial and military support was offered from all over thecountry even from non British India.

    PROBLEMS FACED BY THE MILITARY

    Poorly equipped Indian army was inferior to the British army, they were required only to sa

    NWFP.

    Trench warfare was something new for them.

    They were not aware of the weather and climate that would be prevalent

    Replacement of Indian troops were very difficult

    Often at the camps there was shortage of food which led to various diseasand death at times.

    No proper civic amenities and medical aid was provided for soldiers

    There was censorship in the letters they wrote home as they were doubtethe plan or revealed the location.

    Continuous warfare gave them less time to rest and hence disturbed them
