Insurance Moments in Indiana History The Indiana Bicentennial Celebration celebrates Indiana's 200th birthday. Insurance holds interesting moments in the history of the state. The Indiana Department of Insurance was created in 1945 and has professional and knowledgeable specialized divisions to address your concerns. The first insurance company to be chartered in Indiana was the Lawrenceburg Insurance Company of Lawrenceburg in 1852. 1852 The Aetna Insurance Company began insuring Hoosiers in 1859 and erected a four-story building on North Pennsylvania Street. It's one of only a few pre-Civil War structures remaining in downtown Indianapolis. 1859 The Indiana legislature passed an act in 1881 providing for the organization of farmers' mutual fire insurance companies. 1881 Indiana Insurance Through the Years 1899 Life insurance business in Indiana is said to date from the enactment of the Premium Assessment Law in 1897. However, it really dates back to 1899 when the law relating to stock and mutual life insurance companies was passed. 1909 1994 In 1994, Donna D. Bennett was appointed the first woman to serve as Commissioner of the Indiana Department of Insurance. A casualty law was passed in Indiana in 1903, but it didn't provide for insurance against personal accidents until amended by the Act of 1909. 2015 Governor Pence successfully negotiated the expansion of the Healthy Indiana Plan 2.0 in 2015 which expanded health insurance to over 350,000 uninsured Hoosiers. Benjamin Franklin and his fellow firefighters founded The Philadelphia Contributionship, a mutual insurance company that is still in operation today. 1752 The Franklin Health Assurance Company of Massachusetts was first firm in the United States to offer accident insurance. It offered insurance against injuries arising from railroad and steamboat accidents. 1850 Moments in U.S. History of Insurance 1912 President T. Roosevelt and the Progressive party endorsed social insurance, including health insurance. The National Convention of Insurance Commissioners (now the National Association of Insurance Commissioners) developed the first model of state law for regulating health insurance. The Indiana General Assembly adopted the state flag in 1917.There are 19 stars - the outer circle represents the 13 colonies and the semi-circle represent states admitted to the Union prior to Indiana. The star directly above the torch symbolizes Indiana, the 19th state. The cardinal was adopted as the state bird by the 1933 General Assembly. The male is bright red; the female is brown with dull red crest, wings and tail. They remain in Indiana year round. State of Indiana Did You Know? Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Monument located on the circle in downtown Indianapolis was constructed between 1887 and 1902. It is recognized as one of the world's outstanding monuments and has come to symbolize both the city of Indianapolis and the state of Indiana. Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Monument is Indiana's official memorial to the Hoosiers that served in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Mexican War, the Civil War, the Frontier Wars and the Spanish- American War. Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Monument plays host yearly to thousands of spectators as the monument is decorated as an enormous Christmas tree. The annual tradition known as the Circle of Lights® began in 1962 and is held the day after Thanksgiving. The Indiana Department of Insurance protects Indiana's insurance consumers by monitoring and regulating the financial strengths and market conduct activities of insurance companies and agents. The department monitors insurance companies and agents for compliance with state laws to protect consumers and to offer them the best array of insurance products available. The department also assists Hoosiers with insurance questions and provides guidance in understanding how insurance policies work.
